Guy Asks If It’s Wrong Of Him To Demand His Bald Sister Wears A Wig To His Engagement Party
Celebrations can be anxiety-inducing to both hosts and guests, especially if they require special preparation. In the case of Reddit user Jaded_Flying992, it was over his suggested dress etiquette.
The guy asked a forum called Am I the A-hole to help him understand if he was in the wrong to invite his sister to his engagement party under certain unconventional conditions. The requirements are to wear a wig and make-up. For context, she has alopecia and Jaded_Flying992 wants his sister to hide it so she visually blends in with the guests more and the future bride gets the most attention.

Alopecia is a condition that makes the body lose hair either in patches or altogether, it is associated with other symptoms as well. The U.K. national health provider NHS says: “Losing hair can be upsetting. For many people, their hair is an important part of who they are. If your hair loss is causing you distress, your GP may be able to help you get some counseling.” Apart from the ability to get into counseling and support groups patients can buy wigs from NHS or even get them compensated. Share on FacebookI thought this was bad enough until I got to the end where it said her parents agree with him.. This poor woman needs to cut out her family stat and possibly get a good therapist if she hasn’t already. It sounds like she has been subjected to abuse by her entire family her whole life.
I don't think she needs the therapist. She seems to have managed to survive her asshole family with a healthy self image - not hiding her condition - and formed a healthy relationship (from the little we know) with someone who accepts her and stands up for her. She clearly also has a successful career. I don't know how the hell she managed it since her family seem to be entirely made up of assholes, but if she figures that out she needs to write a book and sell the secret to the rest of us.
Load More Replies...Sister already feels sh!t because of the alopecia. As a woman she had many hurdles and after school she was done with the wig and makeup. Now she has to deal with a brother who has seen her suffer and doesn't care. She was a child when she got this - let's not forget - imagine puberty and how cruel kids can be. And her mum OMG. Of course she didn't answer his email. What a crappy family. Jees.
Why would she feel "like s**t"? She's had this condition for her entire life, and I would say that refusing to spend hours every day to try and look "normal" (which is a stupid word, because there is no such thing) tells me that she has self confidence to spare.
Load More Replies...WOW - this guy basically says his sister isn't worthy of being part of their family occasions unless she adopts a false image of herself and then he asks if he's an arsehole! He's cutting someone out because of hair, just hair!
How is this guy equating hygiene and "natural" with wearing a wig? I always try to play a little devil's advocate and try to see it from their perspective, but he's just a shallow shitty human.
I would bet all my money in that at the same time he believes that female body hair is unhygenic.
Load More Replies...He wants her to look more 'natural' by wearing fake hair and make-up rather than being her actual natural self. What a d**k.
I think so, too. There might be shallow people like this, no doubt, but then they probably would have clashed way sooner.
Load More Replies...Ugh, I saw the original post a few days ago on Reddit. It made me happy that the comments were filled with YTA's. I feel really bad for the sister, she really has a shitty family.
My dad has alopecia as well, he was excused from military duty as they (in the 70's) deemed it a "embarrassing" condition. Your sister is very brave to have embraced her condition! My dad has worn wigs for years when we were still in primary school as he feared we were going to be bullied for having a bald dad. He's always hated the wigs. They're itchy, never felt good and when you're doing certain physical activities of go into amusement park rides there's always the chance it will fly off... He was very happy to leave them behind when we were all older!
My sister has alopecia, and when I got married she was trying to wind me up saying she'll come in these bright coloured wigs (pink mainly). I told her I don't care what wig (or not) she has on, as long as she's there. (She opted for a natural brown wig for those wondering) OP is such a superficial, selfish AH! Good on her for embracing it, many people struggle with that.
Honestly, in my opinion, The fact you even had to ask whether or not you are the a**hole in this situation in the first place says alot about you. To me, It shows someone with extremely shitty personality, who puts more value on what other people may think over any kind of love and even loyalty to your own sister. ( Whether or not you really get along is irrelevant. ) Ever heard of something called Empathy? I guess I'm Gonna go ahead and assume you haven't. I wonder if it's ever even crossed your mind to think of how you would feel , if it had been you that had alopecia instead of your sister and the same was said to you? But I'm gonna go out on a limb and again assume that you haven't . That's too much depth for people so shallow to ever reach. (That also goes for your fiancé and some of your family as well) I would imagine that it would be pretty damn devastatingly hard enough alone, just having to go through puberty looking differently than everyone else. I could imagine that I would probably be feeling somewhat inadequate or less pretty as other girls . Especially as a teenage female in such a superficial world . Let me just add that I really wish I could have a chance to meet your sister. Hell, just from what you are saying about her, she is brave, respected, and is self confident enough to not give a s**t about what the hell other people MIGHT think of her. And On top of everything, she somehow gained the courage and strength to turn out as fabulous as she has DESPITE the lack of support and unfortunate family she was born into. She absolutely KNOWS her worth and beauty, inside and out, and definitely does not need to rely on the opinion of shitty people . (That Includes yourself and fiance ) . She may have been the one who was born with the condition that causes lack of hair , But , at least she wasn't born with a lack of spine and decency. So, instead of worrying about what people may be thinking about her , you and your fiance may want to consider worrying a little more about what people are thinking about you guy's. Because from what I'm seeing, it's a pretty pathetic view.
I want to shave my head and stand outside his party with st least 50 other bald women
The Reddit game can be strong. I hope this can be realized! Having had a best friend who got bald (though to leukemia and passed away when we were 13 unfortunately) and a friend who has alopecia as well, I am completely behind this idea!

"She has to look more natural to join family events" - what the f**k is wrong with that dude, the family and even the brothers fiance? Where is the Girls Support Girls Vibe? I get why the sister went to the army - I would want to leave this toxic ass family as soon as possible as well
The fiancee is a stupid bitch, and so is the brother. They deserve each other. If I were the sister, I would solve their "problem" by never speaking to either again. They've proven that all they will ever do is abuse her.
He is most definitely the asshole and so is his fiancé, and the whole damn family. Let this woman be who she is already.
I just hope the sister nopes herself from the wedding. Screw them arseholes! Especially family members that feel the same way he and his fiancé do.
Can you imagine if she lost a limb in Afghanistan? Hope this lovely lady finds a better family. I'll happily invite her to our family events for acceptance.
You are alll trash humans for trying to make her do something she does not want to do.. she likes herself without the wigs and makeup, so STFU and stop being a POS.
You are definitely the A hole with a capital A. The fact that you even have to ask proves that you are an even bigger A hole than anyone thought
This marriage will last less than 3 years. The fact that he even has to ask a question like this is proof 1) he's a dumb a, 2) his fiancee is Psycho, 3) Anyone who lowers themselves to appease the will of others, always loose in the end. 4) if they do pull off getting married and manage to spawn offspring. This kid-s are gonna go through hell dealing with this divorced metal health duo. The only winner here is his sister! She's still herself!
I also have alopecia. I don't wear a wig either. Took me a while to overcome my anxiety due to a bald head, but now I have, I'm loud n proud! The op is definitely the a hole. I would seriously consider cancelling the engagement clearly their partner is more concerned about superficial thing. Not a keeper imo.
The OP and his bridezilla of a fiancee are both the AH. The fiancee more so. If I were the OP I'd think long and hard before marrying such a self centered and cruel person. His sister has come to terms with her alopecia it isn't a trick she does to upstage others. Still his bride to be has set what appear to be ultimatums for her future SIL for upcoming family events in addition to her wedding FOR THE FAMILY INTO WHICH SHE'S MARRYING. I pity any child they may have who is less than perfect. I hope he thought long and hard and walked away from the original AH.
The brother should be ashamed of himself and I wouldn't go at all. That guy and his fiance deserve each other and later in life, they will be f****n miserable! It's girl, they will get what is coming sometime in their life for treating you like this. You don't need them and the negativity they bring. I hope your parents will do something about this ( hopefully she has good and loving parents). I can't believe this crap! They are monsters for doing this...that condition that his sister has....yeah its hereditary and they better pray that God doesn't bestow that on their kids if God blesses them with them.
He IS TA: The sister has come to accept herself. Period. I can not imagine growing up having to hide what you can't help. But it seems to me from reading that her family had come to accept her the way she is. Which is what is expected. Period. The problem is the brother not having the balls to tell his fiancé to accept her as she is and instead bends in her direction like silly putty. Not only that, but now he is passing along manipulations to make the sister feel SHE is the one who will be missing out for having alopecia. When is he going to wake up? Truly disgusting. Just embarrassing.
The poster is 100% the asshole. Normally I judge 95% b ut this one is 100% the ass hole.
Honestly i wouldn’t even bother going if I were her. He clearly doesn’t accept her as she is and I don’t blame her for not responding
OMG! I dont even know where to start ! This brother and family doesn't deserve the air they breathe. Would you ask someone with a disability to look normal? Or someone who is mentally challenged or ill to act normal? We are all unique in our own way. Why cant people just be themselves? Who has the God given right to tell anyone how to look? Are you gonna omit people because they are ugly? Teeth aren't perfect? Too tan? Hairstyle is out of date? And so on.... Come on and get over yourself! You are a sh***y brother, mother, family and she deserves so much more.
Mate am I spelling C**t properly, I'm asking you because you and your intended are certified champions at it
Not only are they the AH, they're just a sad pathetic douchebag of a human being.
Poor sister, what an awful family! People with a visual difference don't owe anyone anything. We (I include myself in this) do not have to explain our differences to strangers and we don't have to cover ourselves up for shitty relatives. Wtaf. Hope the sister can find solace away from those awful people. Society is the issue, not her
Sister hasn't replied? 🤔 I guess her answer is no, and go eff yourselves. If the parents expect that standard too, then she will probably be far away. Good for her.
He never wanted her at the parties and has manipulated the situation so he looks good and she looks bad in the eyes of the parents because she won't attend. He is the upmost of AH.
The first comment from Dragoncelica was sufficient, to the point and a perfect summary of the situation. All the rest is superfluous.

Wow. No doubt about it……YOU ARE THE AS*HOLE!!! I don’t know if I believe everything you’re saying. Sounds to much like you’re trying to make yourself sound reasonable. And if it’s true you’re fiancé feels that way……… I was going to say dump her now….. but it sounds like you were made for each other. I feel bad for your sister in that she has a superficial family. But it sounds like she’s doing ok. So kudos for her. I admire her in so many ways. You? Not so much.
"She's going to miss out on these events if she doesn't try to make herself look more natural." Natural, as without makeup and wigs? And this guy and his family agrees? What a bunch of a-aholes.
The guy may think he was extending an olive branch, but it was really a red flag. Congrats to the sister for recognising that his attitude (and the rest of the family!) is toxic and misogynistic, and not getting sucked back in to that emotionally and mentally abusive family.
And yes, it is misogyny - demanding that she weara wig and make up, to be pretty, to look 'normal'. Would he demand that a male family member who was bald or had a shaved head wear a wig? Nope. There is this implicit assumption that women have an obligation to make themselves physically attractive, even at the expense of their physical comfort, and mental health.

This is honestly creepy. I would never be that concerned or obsessed with my siblings looks, I would just want them to be there. Sure it would be great if they dressed for the occasion, if they didn't I'd laugh it off or something. But the PHYSICAL APPEARANCE of their body? That's so weird.
Not only is he TA, so his is Fiance, Mother, Siblings, Father, Cousins and anyone else that shares his ideas. What in the actual.... this makes me so mad.
I think that, basically, everybody asking these AITA questions in public is TA. Because we never get to know the situation in any broader scope, but just one moment, one incident, often people there have said something they just hadn't thought through yet and stuff. I'd invite my sister even if she looked like a pet that the Addams Family would reject ... invite her, leave her hair situation up to her, or don't invite her. She'll be able to handle this. In case it embarrasses you - reevaluate your values. But, damned, leave it to her, if everything relevant is in this tiny bit, and know for yourself if you're TA or not. We cannot really, we can just give a glimpse of an answer, just as we only get to know a glimpse of the situation.
