Weddings are one thing. But the juicy wedding anecdotes that get passed around from guests in real life is another. From fussy bridezillas to nightmarish decor, hilarious invitations, accidents, "what da heck was dat" moments, and even full-blown fights… Some people live for the nuptial gossip.

And the chances are they belong to this quirky online community that deliberately targets some shame-worthy weddings. Captioned "let’s shame those weddings," the subreddit r/weddingshaming is the online home for roasting wedding themes, brides, grooms, wedding parties, in-laws, outlaws, guests, Uncle Bob, vendors, and more. “You name it, we shame it!” states the community’s description.

Created in 2018, the controversial subreddit now has 151k members who love digging through anything wedding-related. So let’s take a look at what they dug up and shamed down below.

Just Hope There Isn’t A Third...

reddit.com Report

The world of wedding shaming offers real-life drama combined with sassiness and a fair share of roasting, all in the comfort of a virtual environment. Groups like the “That’s it, I’m wedding shaming” Facebook group, which has 80.6k members, and the r/weddingshaming subreddit with 153k members have become somewhat of a phenomenon in the past 2 years. It turns out there’s something universally irresistible about ripping apart someone’s supposed best day of their lives.

Luna, the moderator from Australia at “That’s it, I’m wedding shaming,” told Wired that “There’s something about weddings, whether you’re invited or not, that just brings out the worst in people.” She suggested that this is precisely what gives the group a feel similar to reality TV shows.

This online shaming trend became a hit back in August 2018 when a post from a group shamed a bride for asking her guests to pay about $1,500 towards her wedding. The story went viral after it was shared by model and social media star Chrissy Teigen.

But many people are not so positive about this new trend, claiming that “beneath those silly nuptial stories lies an online playground of hate.”

Bored Panda reached out to Darlene Lancer, clinical psychologist and the author of “Codependency for Dummies” and “Conquering Shame and Codependency.” Darlene said that wedding haters and shamers are not members of a “hate group,” according to the FBI.

She explained: “hate groups” direct their hatred against a particular race, religion, gender, ethnic group, or people of a particular sexual orientation. The FBI investigates these hate groups to protect democracy and individual liberty.” In that sense, wedding shamers are not one of them.

"Hey! Why let a little inconvenience such as COVID spoil our big day?" was the general concensus of the wedding party. This how COVID multiplies at an exponential rate.

Darlene further explained that “Ironically, public displays of extravagant and ostentatious weddings may also be fueled by shame where the emphasis is on impressing other people of the family’s wealth and status.” Such behavior can be a compensation for not feeling adequate or sufficiently respected.

Shaming others, the clinical psychologist suggests, is a way of protesting and ridding themselves of shame people have inside, which is often hidden and unconscious.

“It may be fueled by anger and envy because of the widening discrepancy between classes of haves and have-nots. Aggression and envy are also defenses to shame,” Darlene concluded.

I attended the wedding of a friend in my early 20s. First wedding since I was a kid. I was quite poor, and my Mom loaned me money for a new outfit. I chose an all-white cotton shirt and pant set, with little enbroidered flowers. I have no idea why - but it was something I could wear elsewhere and I guess I thought it looked a little fancy. I had no idea you weren't supposed to wear white to a wedding. I'm ashamed and embarassed to this day. It was NOT a dress, though, and certainly not one that looked like a WEDDING dress. Even my young autistic self probably would have recognized that as a bad idea.

I would pay all the guests to go up to her every five minutes and exclaim, "Oh my goodness. It's your wedding day TOO? Congratulations. Where's the groom?" I figure after an hour of that, she would leave.

When my cousin got married, her mother-in-law did this. The MIL went out and bought a wedding gown and wore it to the wedding and insisted on having photos taken without the bride.

What kind of attention whore does that? A friends stepmother (attn whore) did that at her sisters wedding. Luckily, she was spotted getting out of the limo she had rented and stopped at the door. She was informed that if she wanted to attend the wedding she would have to go home and change into something more appropriate (45 minutes away) and NO, they would not postpone the wedding for her. The kicker? Her Dad was giving her away and was in the limo with this nutcase. He was heard saying, "I told you that was disrespectful. I guess I'll see you at the reception". She started throwing a fit & the Dad literally shoved her back into the car and told the driver "GO". She never did make it back for the reception, which I'm told was absolutely gorgeous. The bride didn't know anything about it until AFTER they got back from the honeymoon. THOSE are the friends you want at your wedding.

Let me guess: she's either Mother of the Groom and she's the only one who will ever really be able to take care of her son or she harbors a secret love of the bride or groom

Never wear white (or off white) to a wedding. Don't get near this. Never wear the style of dress with lace that might be used as a bridal gown. This is way over the line. The bride must always shine at her wedding. It is her day. It is absolutely a very long tradition that should be observed on such an important day for the bride. Somehow this person didn't know this. Or maybe they thought it wasn't important. They still made an awful faux pas.

I still don't feel it was shame worthy. That dress doesn't immediately strike me as bridal attire. It's something someone would wear to a wedding because they think it's pretty and festive.

Awful. No one should make the bride/groom feel awful on THEIR WEDDING DAY. If she wants to wear that then, WEAR IT ON YOUR OWN TIME/Wedding day. If she tries to come in, with that on, I say shut the door with a slam.

IMHO it's a ball gown, Oscar ceremony formal dress, not a wedding dress. But not appropriate for a wedding unless ball gowns were specified.

It's a fancy golden dress. It's clearly not a wedding dress; it's a culturally-appropriate dress. No-one makes a big deal about blokes who aren't part of the bridal party wearing fancy suits to weddings, let her wear a gold dress without passing judgement.

It's hard to tell the colour - lighting and camera can affect how colour is recorded.   While there's no law against non-brides wearing a white wedding gown to a wedding, it is considered rude. I realize it doesn't sound logical to tell men to dress like the groom, but insist that women not dress like the bride. There's a history of women wearing virginal white at weddings. I overthink these things too - I wore a green ballgown to my wedding because "White is for virgins. I've been living with the guy for ten year, who am I fooling?" Oh, and I look better in green. :)

I would guess the bride at this wedding cared. It is simple etiquette to not wear anything that remotely looks like a wedding dress unless you are the bride.

What´s the problem? The dress is not white wedding dress, it´s a champagne shade ball dress. Also, how do they know that the bride didn´t talk to this person (maybe it´s her mother? Aunt? Good friend?) and they both agreed upon this dress.
