Weddings are one thing. But the juicy wedding anecdotes that get passed around from guests in real life is another. From fussy bridezillas to nightmarish decor, hilarious invitations, accidents, "what da heck was dat" moments, and even full-blown fights… Some people live for the nuptial gossip.

And the chances are they belong to this quirky online community that deliberately targets some shame-worthy weddings. Captioned "let’s shame those weddings," the subreddit r/weddingshaming is the online home for roasting wedding themes, brides, grooms, wedding parties, in-laws, outlaws, guests, Uncle Bob, vendors, and more. “You name it, we shame it!” states the community’s description.

Created in 2018, the controversial subreddit now has 151k members who love digging through anything wedding-related. So let’s take a look at what they dug up and shamed down below.

Yes, that was inconsiderate of the guest. You really don't need to take a photo of everything to be deleted later on anyway.

This whole phone/pic thing is really starting to get on my nerves. Oh well, nothing we can do about it until it's no longer a fad. Change of Subject: And the groom in the pic? What was he doing to get his trousers in such a shape?

Had a good few of these... The funniest one was the couple asking me afterwards - we saw you after the wedding during the group shots, but nowhere before or after... were you even there?? We're not paying for this! (until I showed them the 1500 odd pictures from nearly every angle and moment throughout the wedding of them and their guests, plus a bunch of video clips of important moments - they though I was part of the catering staff, as I dressed up as them to completely blend in). They, their parents and guests had all the pics available online for browsing as they arrived on their honey moon..

I do photography on the side, and if you're a good photographer you know how to get around people with phones, or you tell the bride / groom that there are no phones allowed during the ceremony. It's not that difficult. And to be honest, my iPhone sadly takes just as good if not better pictures than my 1k camera does. lol. But in the end, people want the professional look of a bulky camera. Also if you're good at editing you can edit that person out.

This is annoying and stuff, I get it perfectly, and would have hated it if it had happened to my wedding pics. On the other hand (I'm really playing the devil's advocate here), why does everybody in the comments sorta just assumes that the smartphone pic will never be used again, and that the whole picture culture thing is bad, and so? My stepmother and my grandfather are both running a photo book. And they have to take their own pictures of important events they attend, since the official photographers never gave them their pictures, although being often told to. So I can understand what's happening here.

Sometimes people do things that are inconsiderate, but they like it.. It's strange. Also by saying they ruined things.. Probably really liked that even more. It's like they get off on it.

to be honest, she probably didn't think her actions all the way through. I've been to weddings, been to graduations, and worked events like that for a few years. People are in their little bubbles often. "Oh my kid is walking onto the stage let me get a picture". "Oh they look so cute together. Let me share a shot on facebook to those who couldn't make it". That type stuff. Just maybe not intending to be a jerk, that's all.

I doubt she even realised she was blocking a shot; after all, she was looking forward, not backwards. Maybe the photographer could have just gone 'Psst!' to alert her instead of all the later rudeness.

idk I think everyone is overreacting a bit. Most people take pictures at important events and this lady may not have realized the photographer was right behind her or whatever because she was focused on the couple. Any good wedding photographer isn't taking one single picture, they're doing several shots to be sure they got a good one. I can't tell you how many subtle variations my photographer had us go through to pick the ones we liked best. Probably the case since the photographer had two variations to post while shaming someone doing something everyone does. I'm sure this couple had plenty of other wonderful photos to remember the occasion by. Personally I have exactly two I display and an album full of photos that has been in storage for years.

If the guest took a quick shot and put it away, it wouldn't be so bad, but keeping your phone there to take a video means you're blocking the professional that the couple has PAID A LOT OF MONEY.

I actually disagree, and i used to be a wedding photographer. This is a candid moment, not a perfect one. It's not scripted or airbrushed, just a perfect representation of the moment, enjoy the fun of wedding guests who are that excited to share (even online) this moment.

I heard many photographers complain about the guests using their own cameras..especially if they had a flash go off. Personally, people should leave their camera/phone turned off and tucked away.

This happens at concerts, at everything now a says. All the person on the stage can probably see is a sea of arms holding up a phone. The audio is going to be awful and the video or picture will have have other people's phones in it so why do they do this???

For my wedding photos, I told the photographer that he MUST get my groom's first reaction at seeing me walk down the aisle. I told my Mom that she couldn't bring a camera, but she ended up standing up in front of my groom and taking a photo of me coming out and walking down the aisle *forehead slap*

If they're just taking a photo, it's hardly the end of the world. Step left or go low and recompose, or wait for them to get a shot. If they're videoing though, I think it's not unreasonable to introduce your tripod to their head.

All true. BUT - groom's suit does not fit, from the tight jacket to bulging pocket to creeping legs, wrong suit, wrong size. And - bride's gown too long.

Seriously though, this is a professional photog who can probably take 50 digital photos of that moment, and a couple of seconds with those hands in the way is no big deal.

Just Hope There Isn’t A Third...

Just Hope There Isn’t A Third...

reddit.com Report

The world of wedding shaming offers real-life drama combined with sassiness and a fair share of roasting, all in the comfort of a virtual environment. Groups like the “That’s it, I’m wedding shaming” Facebook group, which has 80.6k members, and the r/weddingshaming subreddit with 153k members have become somewhat of a phenomenon in the past 2 years. It turns out there’s something universally irresistible about ripping apart someone’s supposed best day of their lives.

Luna, the moderator from Australia at “That’s it, I’m wedding shaming,” told Wired that “There’s something about weddings, whether you’re invited or not, that just brings out the worst in people.” She suggested that this is precisely what gives the group a feel similar to reality TV shows.

This online shaming trend became a hit back in August 2018 when a post from a group shamed a bride for asking her guests to pay about $1,500 towards her wedding. The story went viral after it was shared by model and social media star Chrissy Teigen.

But many people are not so positive about this new trend, claiming that “beneath those silly nuptial stories lies an online playground of hate.”

Bored Panda reached out to Darlene Lancer, clinical psychologist and the author of “Codependency for Dummies” and “Conquering Shame and Codependency.” Darlene said that wedding haters and shamers are not members of a “hate group,” according to the FBI.

She explained: “hate groups” direct their hatred against a particular race, religion, gender, ethnic group, or people of a particular sexual orientation. The FBI investigates these hate groups to protect democracy and individual liberty.” In that sense, wedding shamers are not one of them.

"Hey! Why let a little inconvenience such as COVID spoil our big day?" was the general concensus of the wedding party. This how COVID multiplies at an exponential rate.

Darlene further explained that “Ironically, public displays of extravagant and ostentatious weddings may also be fueled by shame where the emphasis is on impressing other people of the family’s wealth and status.” Such behavior can be a compensation for not feeling adequate or sufficiently respected.

Shaming others, the clinical psychologist suggests, is a way of protesting and ridding themselves of shame people have inside, which is often hidden and unconscious.

“It may be fueled by anger and envy because of the widening discrepancy between classes of haves and have-nots. Aggression and envy are also defenses to shame,” Darlene concluded.
