Wedding Photographer Shares Working Horror Story When A Guest Won’t Let Her Do Her Job

Wedding Photographer Shares Working Horror Story When A Guest Won’t Let Her Do Her Job

If someone purposefully chooses a career, it must be because they like it or are good at it. And one of the most frustrating things for a professional is when someone who read an article on the internet or just started getting interested in the subject tries to explain to them how to do their job.

Apparently, wedding photographers get that a lot. They call people who aren’t hired to take photos at weddings, but still want to take every shot of the event Uncle Bobs. Uncle Bobs also like to explain what the professionals are doing wrong and often interfere with their work.

The photographer in this story had to deal with a very annoying Uncle Bob who not only explained to her how to do her job properly and was touching her equipment without her permission, but also made the bride quite unhappy.

More info: Tumblr

A wedding photographer shared a story of an Uncle Bob mansplaining to her and not letting her do her job

Image credits: Kristina Paukshtite (not the actual photo)

A wedding photographer shared an unpleasant experience she had while working and it involved the infamous Uncle Bob, a person at a wedding that is not hired to be a photographer, but takes as many pictures as the professional and can be a little or of great annoyance to them.

No sooner was this photographer able to set up her equipment and Uncle Bob showed up to take matters in his own hands.

Firstly, photographers tend to shoot the dress and the accessories while they’re not being worn. So she was arranging the things how she would like them in the photo, but in Uncle Bob’s opinion, the lighting was too dark for the shot.

This comment is not that big of a deal, because photographers think not only about the actual shot but also what they will do with the photo in a photo editor. The problem was that Uncle Bob decided that he needed the dress and took it right out from under the photographer’s nose and disappeared.

It started with a comment about lighting and soon he was taking things from the photoshoot set that the photographer arranged and even barked at her

Uncle Bob proceeded to also take the flowers and the rings, not letting do her job. On top of that, he started yelling and claiming that the photographer didn’t know what she was doing and was ruining his niece’s photos.

There definitely are photographers that are better at doing their job and there are ones that are less good. Also, people may have preferences how they would like their photos to look; however, in this case, it seems that Uncle Bob just wasn’t the nicest person as he barked at the photographer when she didn’t let him have the rings.

Apparently Uncle Bob had been shooting for two weeks and had a new camera

Turns out, Uncle Bob thought he was a photographer too and that was why he was so dissatisfied with the hired one’s job, as he had a new camera and two weeks of experience.

He was so into it that he even allowed himself to move around the expensive equipment that was set up by the real professional.

So he probably thought that he had everything he needed to allow himself to touch someone else’s gear

Uncle Bob also made the photographer miss the first kiss shot because he tripped and even blamed her because he also didn’t get the shot

Well, she just had to make the best of the situation because there was no time to set it up again as the ceremony was about to begin.

But Uncle Bob managed to cause even more trouble. He trips on a cord, missed the shot himself, made the photographer miss it, and put all the blame on her.

But there is a happy ending to this story. Despite everything being a mess thanks to Uncle Bob, the photographer’s assistant was busy and documenting Uncle Bob’s behavior.

Not only that, but the assistant got the most important shot—the first kiss. For the other photos it was possible to edit Uncle Bob out, so they didn’t turn out that bad.

However, his misbehavior didn’t go unnoticed and the photographer’s assistant got everything, including him putting the dress on grass and more importantly, the first kiss picture

At the end, the photos were saved, the most important shots taken, and the truth came out that the hired photographer was doing everything in her power to do her job and it was Uncle Bob who was messing things up.

What do you think of this story? Do you think the wedding photographer was too harsh on Uncle Bob or did he get what was coming for him? Let us know in the comments.

Honestly, the photographer let it go too far. She should have talked to the groom or the mother of the bride, telling them the situation, and saying she wasn't able to do her job properly under these circumstances, and would miss many important shots if it kept up. The bride didn't have to get upset, but it would have been DEALT with. Letting this goon just run roughshod over the whole show was unprofessional on her part.

I'm an architectural photographer, for about 15 years, primarily Baroque cathedrals. Pretty niche. Took me years to get good. There is NO WAY I'd interfere with a wedding photographer - way too weird and intimidating for me. Lol. I'd just have to punch Uncle Bob in the kisser and beat him over the head with my Leica. You have the patience of a Saint.

This is the same reason that I was angry at a friends wedding because one of the guests let her kids run wild. After her son puts his fingers in the frosting of the wedding cake before the cake cutting ceremony, she wrangles the photographer and says "let's get some shots of the kids out in the garden." I said "Are you paying him?" She said "No." "Do you have permission from the Bride or Groom?" "No." "Then stop acting like this is your wedding and go sit down. If you weren't going to make the effort to keep your kids entertained, then you shouldn't have brought them." "I have the right to enjoy the wedding too!" "So do we, without being expected to be free babysitters and entertainment for YOUR kids. You brought them, you keep track of them. It's the least you can do for everyone else..including the Bride and Groom." She shut up and, shortly there-after, left.

Take the gender issue out of this! This is not "mansplaining", no need to call it that to dramatise. This is a story about a selfish, respectless, maybe even abusive person creating hell for professionals who take their job seriously. And it is worthy being told, it is worthy to warn anyone from being the "Uncle Bob" who ruins the day, and it is not worthy of distracting from this by calling it a fight of men against women.

Might be true but can you imagine a scenario where Uncle Bob does this to a male photographer or an auntie May doing this to a female or male photographer? It's very experiential but women do get questioned about their specialization in the field. Hell, I've done it to other women and I AM a woman. I definitely came here to make your exact comment because 'mansplaining' is too often used the wrong way, very often used to put down men who have legitimate criticisms or tips or ideas but this was not the case here. Cheers

This made my blood boil. I worked as a biomedical photographer for 36 years, and have run into this behavior so many times, I can't understand how people can be professional wedding photographers without wanting to kill somebody. When my niece got married last month, her husband, a photographer, had a friend make an announcement right before the marriage that there were professionals photographing and videotaping the wedding, and that guests were to refrain from taking photos during and immediately after the ceremony. My heart sang upon hearing that. I've actually seen people lining up behind the hired photographer to get their own photos of the arrangements.

Even if you are a FANTASTIC wedding photographer, if you weren't selected for this shoot... get out of the way! I admire the patience and discipline this Photographer exhibited! I do think it would be best for Photographers to ensure that there are clauses within the Photography Agreements to protect their reputation and them financially if "Uncle Bob" interferes in the shoot and their Assistant is not fortunate enough to save the day! ~As the cliché goes, an ounce of precaution is worth a pound of cure! ~

We had someone like this at my best friend's wedding too. She was the location manager. The entire bridal party and the wedding officiant had to step in and physically block this woman from interacting with the photographer and family while they were getting their shoots done. It was ridiculous. Ofc she was pissed and booted us off the property 2 hrs earlier then planned too. Luckily since it was a small wedding with elderly guests (only the couple and the bridal party were young (30s)) so we were like fine, we would gladly leave you horrid witch!

I shot weddings for a couple of years before I moved on in my photography. As a man some of what I was taught during my second shooting is a little easier than for many women, but when it comes to interrupters into your job you have to tell them NO in a manner that allows no more interference. You must keep in mind who you work for and what you are hired to do. If a family member asks for something special it may be something worthwhile but always get the contracted items done first. I would often politely ignore mothers-in-law or family-member-who-owns-a-camera after listening to their suggestions. At the end of the day, the event is all that matters, and in that pursuit you must get the shot.

To be honest, I would have just spoken to one of the parents of the bride (brother/sister of the dodgy uncle). I bet they would have sorted him out.

Worked as a concert photographer for a number of years(I'm with the band, man). Wouldn't do weddings just for this reason

Better not let uncle Bob know when you go to the hospital to have your first baby!

Yeah, husband has the uncanny ability to move into my carefully set up shots EVERY SINGLE TIME. I'm at the point of "eff it" and shoot with his fat head in the shot.

Uncle Bob would have been Uncle kicked in the nut sack if I was the niece.

He had probably taken a photography class and received some positive feedback from the instructor. Man, I don’t want anything to do with weddings. Too much pressure.

This reminds me that everyone that has learned something, believes they can be an accomplished teacher.

I love bored panda, but I'm sick to death of you using three different front sizes for articles like this. It's not good design, nor clever, nor useful.
