Baby Weasel Takes A Magical Ride On Woodpecker’s Back
Though this looks like it could be a fantastic animal rendition of Jasmine’s magic carpet ride from Disney’s classic Aladdin, the photo is real and the truth behind it is somewhat more sinister. Martin Le-May, a hobby photographer in East London, took these photos of a woodpecker and a baby weasel fighting for their lives over Hornchurch Country Park.
According to Le-May, he was walking in the park with his wife when they heard, and then saw, the fight unfold. When the bird flew right across them, they could see it had a small mammal on its back – and that’s when he snapped these pictures.
Weasels love to rob nests, but this one was probably after the woodpecker itself. In any case, he seems to have been foiled for now. As Le-May wrote, “The woodpecker left with its life. The weasel just disappeared into the long grass, hungry.“

What at first might seem like a magical woodpecker ride…
…was actually a dirty and terrifying battle for survival!
After the woodpecker landed, they fought and then the weasel fled

Share on FacebookWell, If the bird was properly dressed this wouldn't have happened. That weasel just couldn't resist those 'tailfeathers'.
Hahaha!! Yup, brought it on himself, flashing around like that.
Load More Replies...For a brief moment I thought the woodpecker had offered a lift to the baby weasel out of love....a bit disappointed :-\
There's nothing sinister about the circle of life. It's nuts to project human morality on other animals living as nature intended.
I don't know what the big deal is.. I once watched a movie in which two mice rode an albatross for a lot longer.. The movie was called "the avengers" (on second thought it might have been a cartoon)
Load More Replies...Poor weasel!... but it's a captured moment!... well done mr. Martin
This is a teenaged weasel and just before it happened he told his weasel friends. “Hey watch this”. 😜. True story.
"I can show you the world, shinning, shimmering, splendid, tell me princess now when did you last let your heart decide"
This probably wasn't a baby weasel. It was probably a least weasel (Mustela nivalis) full grown. They don't get real big and love eggs... but aren't above attempting bigger prey such as the wood p****r. The little guy was probably taken by surprise when his meal took flight.
Animals are innately in tune with nature...unfortunately...most humans are not! Love these incredible photo's.
Weasels are vicious vampires and that woodpecker is probably dead now. This is not cute in any way
That's not a baby weasel. It's an adult Least Weasel--about half the dimensions of the common weasel (also known as a "stoat" or an "ermine") and a quarter the weight.
It’s not a baby weasel, it’s an adult Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis) and it is trying to kill and eat the woodpecker.

Thank you Martin for being there to capture the moment. Thanks for sharing. Amazing story and photos.
There is just too much violence in the world today. Why can't we all just get along?
