Doctors and nurses are on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus. Their lives are now more difficult than ever and some have taken to posting their experiences online. While most internet users express their support for doctors and nurses, some tell them to “stop complaining.”
After constantly hearing how they should stop complaining because this is what they signed up for, one nurse couldn’t take it anymore and posted her thoughts about fighting Covid-19.
She went into detail about how exactly the pandemic is different from the norm and how criticizing doctors and nurses for expressing how they’re overwhelmed is just plain wrong.
One nurse couldn’t stand people telling medical professionals to “stop complaining,” so she posted her thoughts online about how they didn’t sign up for this
While some Imgurians supported the message of TurtMaGurt3’s post, others said that medical professionals did sign up for this and similar situations and compared them to “soldiers in a different war” who have to do their duty whatever comes their way.
Though the reactions to TurtMaGurt3’s post were mixed, you can’t deny that it started up a discussion online, especially with over 9k upvotes, as well as more than 184k views.
The Imgurian is far from the only medical professional (whether fresh out of medical school or a seasoned veteran) to point out just how untypical and stressful the current situation is. For instance, a New York City emergency room nurse with 12 years of experience told the BBC that there is a shortage of equipment to take care of patients.
She revealed to the BBC that doctors and nurses are being rationed personal protective equipment (or PPE for short). “We’re getting one N-95 mask and we’re having to reuse it for five shifts.”
“Before this pandemic, you were never to reuse this equipment. It was one-time use and it was thrown out. It was discarded. Now we are being told to use it for our shift, put it in a paper bag and save it for the next shift. After five shifts, we turn it in and we’ll get a new one. We’re running out of basic supplies because all of our patients are requiring so much,” she said.
Whether you believe that doctors and nurses did or didn’t sign up for this, it’s obvious that it’s difficult and dangerous for them to do their jobs while some are lacking basic equipment. So if you know any medical professionals in your life, send them your love and support. They need it right now.
Some people completely agreed with the nurse’s message, while others had some more nuanced insights
People assume that nurses, doctors, and other people who interact with those who are ill are trained for this. The reality is, they aren't. This is something totally new, something that hasn't been experienced on this level since the Spanish Flu pandemic. The frightening reality is that they are scared because this is new, and something that training and education couldn't have prepared them for. This isn't what they signed up for. They signed up to provide care with compassion, and to be able to assist patients with their recovery that included family, and circumstances that were usually "predictable" (I.e. treatments that worked and plenty of equipment). This hopefully wont become the norm, but for now it is, and we just need to remember that nobody signed up for this, but they stay because they are dedicated to helping people. So that you to everyone who is putting their lives on the line, and we support and appreciate you!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you and thank you to everyone on the front line whether it be the medical field caring for the sick, truck drivers for getting food and supplies for everyone, retail workers for selling the supplies to us, manufacturers for making the supplies and the farmers for the ingredients etc I am sure there is more but it just goes to show that we would be pretty screwed without many people including the “little guys”. Thank you
Load More Replies...I guess people are misunderstanding the message here. These people signed up for this..but they aren't being given the proper tools or the proper respect to fight this thing. Every mask, coverall, face shield, glove, respirator, bed, and sanitizing supplies they're denied makes it impossible for them to do their jobs. Every person that ignores orders to stay home piles on the number of cases that are already overflowing the hospitals and emergency ICU shelters. If you can't contribute money or equipment to help these people, then at least stay the F*** at home and be a solution..not part of the problem. And the people that nonchalantly say "Well you signed up for it..suck it up," close your arrogant mouth, sit down and pray that you never need these doctors and nurses to help you during this pandemic.
I am a nurse. I have been a nurse for more than 20 years. I have worked in public health, hospitals and in surgery centers. No one signs up for this. That is like saying that the grocery stores signed up for this. Yes, they stock toilet paper. Can we expect them to have a plan and resources for the panic buying? No. Just like nurses and doctors did not plan for this. We had a plan and it was DISMANTLED BY OUR PRESIDENT before COVID 19 because Obama put it in place. Now we look to our healthcare workers to carry the load that could have been mitigated. Trump needed to act sooner and he dismissed the crisis many, many times before anything was done. That is tantamount to starting a war no one supports and telling the military "they signed up for it". Nope. I signed up to help people and I will continue to do so. None of us (Every U.S. citizen) signed up for this and Our leaders NEEDED TO BE PROACTIVE BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY SIGNED UP FOR. We are all paying the price for very reckless c

The internet is full of trolls. I am a doctor. We DID sign up for this, as we know we are taking on the most qualified jobs to take care of the sickest people in our community. It's just a really bad situation. Working in healthcare is a calling. This is so hard. But I still consider myself honored to be part of the front lines of dealing with this. I just hope in the future, we are more supportive of each other, and our community is more supportive of healthcare providers, ESPECIALLY ward/ICU nurses.
As a nurse of 35 years we do a lot of things that we didn't sign up for we have fought Administration many times for equipment for Staffing we fight at doctors to get the right medicine for a patient we fight loss of battles we do it proudly and we stand up straight and we do it with pride it's a disgrace sometimes these new nurses who think they got into the field to earn a lot of money without actually doing any of the hard stuff guess what you get the pay now you get to do the job it's okay to express how you feel outside of the work because I know in nursing we don't cry but I also expect you to represent all of us as your sisters when you're doing your job
If I was a nurse and didn't get proper PPE equipment, I would resign. This situation was not caused by aa random catastrophe. There were months to plan for this. It was caused by governments and healthcare industries wanting to save money. There are emergencies law in almost every country that would allow governments to just seize stuff or force companies to produce it. As long as these governments refuse to do that because they fear unpopularity, I see no reason why someone should risk their health and their lives doing their job.
My spouse volunteered to be assigned as a Corona doctor, knowing he does not have proper PPE. While somewhat hopeful, he also knows the likelihood that he probably will not get sufficient PPE for the duration. That was his choice, knowing what we know now, and having the agreement and support of his family—we have resources that many don’t. In his case, yes he did sign up for this. That said, he completely understands and respects colleagues who want, need, or choose to step away from the profession at this time. Nobody in healthcare (or most other professions) signed up for what COVID-19 is bringing. People expecting medical caregivers, without proper PPE and other personal and professional support, to just carry on should think about what it will mean when the exposed caregivers themselves catch the virus. Will critics rush go help the sick in their stead? Didn’t they sign up for that when they chose to publicly define the “right” behavior of society members during this crisis?
I am a nurse, have been for 10 years. We are not trained for every situation, we are trained to think quickly and efficiently for the betterment of our patients. We did not sign up to be martyrs because our leaders decided we could do this with blind eyes. We are people first, we have family and friends too which some people chose to forget. We do not have proper equipment or protection to do our jobs, it's that simple. You would not ask a soldier or a fire fighter to put their lives on the line without proper equipment so why are we so different? This is why there is a shortage in our field because our leaders do nor understand our fight everyday. I am a human being, so are other doctors and nurses and our fears are real. How dare anyone who says this is what we sign up for, simply not true.
That's right. We are trained to be critical thinkers, to prioritize and rise above in these situations.

Sorry you're salary worker and you are putting in 60 or 70 hours a week or more and wont get paid. You called off feeling ill. You cant come back for min of 7 days
My sister works in the ER. The hospital just told the staff that if they are exposed to Corona virus, they are to continue working, and cannot leave until they start showing symptoms. This plus no PPE ( Personal Protection Equipment ) is technically Human Endangerment. She could get fired for speaking publicly. Guys, if you or someone you know is having to work in these conditions, go to the news and let them know, but anonymous. This is perhaps the best way to get a company under fire.
I'm old, and I'm gonna say what I want to say to the low life who say these idiotic things to medical professionals. Listen up you malicious ***holes. F**k you, you f**king f**ks. The fact that medical professionals don't have the PPE they need, and that patients don't have enough ventilators is criminal, literally. If there is any justice in this world Trump will be criminally charged when he leaves office. I don't try to educate stupid people anymore. I'm done with evil trolls, and morons. They aren't worth my, or your time and energy. They can't be helped. It's the right thing to stand up against them, and I'm glad this good woman did so. I hope she can ignore them now, and continue to do the good she is doing for humanity. I hope she knows that decent people admire her, and are grateful to her for what she is doing. God bless her, and God help us
There are always people who turn tail and run. This is 99% of us. It's not the job for them. That's ok. Jobs like this are scary, and aren't meant for everyone.
Load More Replies...You didn't sign up for this, and you want out? Then QUIT. STOP COMPLAINING and just leave. There are teenagers at grocery stores who also didn't sign up for this, getting paid A LOT LESS, and they are operating with more uncertainty and less PPE than you. No one is forcing you to work this job. So quit. Obviously the money is keeping you there, so you do you, but there are others who get paid a lot less than you and are put in the same level of danger. Honestly, how much do you get paid? $50-100k? Grocery store workers are getting $15-20k with no health care in the US.
We are all in this situation TOGETHER. Don't lose your grip on life and the reality it has brought us. Those care to Please PRAY not only for your selves but for those who are trying to help the sick and dying. I know how it feels not to be able to visit a loved one. If you can call or email some and let them know you are doing ok. We need to help each other in any way we possible can. Stay strong we can beat this virus.
Beautiful inspirational words Virginia, people need to hear these kinds of messages. Much needed.

This IS what we signed up for, she just did 't know it. As Nurse, when it is your true calling to heal the the physical and the human spirit, it is your calling and it is embedded in the theories of Nursing from the start. It all comes with the territory, family or no family to go home to, it is a reality. In America, we have the luxury of full wear every day, in third world countries, this is Nursing everyday. The worst of this situation is that some people are not recognizing the necessity of in place shelter, and with this comes frustration because healthcare workers are at full capacity because of this negligence. So, please, stay home, stay home not locked up but stay home knowing that you are safe, safer, and creating less work and problems for everyone else. IT IS the hour of need, we HAVE to be in the front lines, this is what we do. This IS what we signed up for!
I thank God everyday for the medical professionals who treat the coronavirus inflicted, whilst trying to prevent further outbreak. I also appreciate all those who provide essential services, such as hospital staff, police, postal workers, pharmacists, etc. Please be well.
People assume that anything you choose, you accept ALL the responsibilities of it. But there is a huge difference between understanding the risks and taking it on. Do military members understand that they may go to war, may die, may have to kill someone? Yes! But does that mean they are gonna just waltz into WWIII like a deranged death wish Rambo? No! I don't understand why others can't apply empathy towards others, in general. I mean are mothers not allowed to complain if their child covers their rug with poop from their own diaper? Is the lawyer not allowed to complain about a crappy criminal justice system? It just doesn't make sense to not allow people to be upset.
I have one question: Who the hell is telling medical professionals to stop complaining? Seriously? There are people out there who take a moment to write on FB or some other social media platform that medical professionals must stop complaining? That's nuts. Thank you all health workers! Go ahead and complain, too, if it helps relieve some stress.
I would just like to Thank the Doctors, Nurses, Techs, and anyone else that is currently on the "Front Line" of this fight that absolutely no one predicted. If everyone does what we're being told to do, stop spreading this Virus, we can start to be on the winning side of this fight. It's time to stop the whining, blaming and finger pointing (don't be a Trump)!!
I would request that doctors and nurses were made to read the stories of scientist like Madame Curie and her husband Pierre Curie, the story of Pasteur, doctors who dealt with leprosy, etc. Those are examples I look up to up. The whining, over-paid, "never know what's wrong with you" of today I loathe.
No one signed up for this and I am tired to death of the fault finding and finger pointing. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who works so hard to help make it better. Everyone else needs to shut up.
To some "people' you NEVER can explain anything!! These are selfish, arrogant heartless individuals who never done anything for others. They are the biggest whiners themselves. Their huge ego numbed their brains, otherwise they would be terrified by their own ignominy.
Saying that doctors and nurses signed up for this is like saying that my father, who used to work for the highway department, signed up to be possibly run over by a speeding motorist. Doctors and nurses get the training to handle situations and handle them efficiently, but still even in situations like this it is hard on them and they have every right to complain.
I've heard that medical staff here in the UK are being threatened with the sack if they whistle blow on not having enough PPE. WTF is wrong with people?
Who is accusing medical professionals of being complainers...except maybe our Complainer in Chief? Trump signed up to be President and has shown no sign that he's willing to do that job or accept the responsibility that comes with it. You medical people are absolute rock stars.
Note that our country has sent soldiers to war without the necessary equipment to protect them as much as possible. Now the government is doing it to health care providers. It is ironic that the current administration and Senate call themselves "conservatives." There is nothing conservative about not being prepared for crises. I am socially very liberal. Technically I am fiscally conservative, but I can't call myself that because the word has been corrupted. I save. I avoid debt. I set aside resources for the future. I understand that the well-being of my community is directly related to my well-being. I wish the "conservatives" running our country did. And I wish they were interested in the welfare of citizens more than they are in the welfare of the poor, sick money in the stock market and its loved ones.
ive read about all the donations people make for fighting corona.. why not instead buy the PPE, better invest to build a PPE factory?
My heart breaks. Such an impossible situation, yet they still plug on, doing their utmost to serve. More thanks than we could ever give!
The hard part is the families of the dying can't even say goodbye. Doctors, Nurses, RT are getting sick and some died because there's shortage of PPE. And the thought of having to decide instantly which life to save first. They didn't signed up for it.
I wish I could explain it... Not sure I will ever get used to this 'New Normal'...😷
Florence Nightingale quotes: "I attribute my success to this - I never gave or took any excuse." "How very little can be done under the spirit of fear."
Thank you to ALL doctors and nurses and every other medical care worker right down to the janitors at the hospital. However, yes this is literally exactly what you signed up for. Terrible as it is, this is your job. Im sure it feels good to vent, but if this isn’t what you signed up for what were you expecting? Medicine isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

Yes,we are out of ppe's and our president promised to send what we have to the UK. Sorry no hazard pay.
