Doctors and nurses are on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus. Their lives are now more difficult than ever and some have taken to posting their experiences online. While most internet users express their support for doctors and nurses, some tell them to “stop complaining.”
After constantly hearing how they should stop complaining because this is what they signed up for, one nurse couldn’t take it anymore and posted her thoughts about fighting Covid-19.
She went into detail about how exactly the pandemic is different from the norm and how criticizing doctors and nurses for expressing how they’re overwhelmed is just plain wrong.

While some Imgurians supported the message of TurtMaGurt3’s post, others said that medical professionals did sign up for this and similar situations and compared them to “soldiers in a different war” who have to do their duty whatever comes their way.
Though the reactions to TurtMaGurt3’s post were mixed, you can’t deny that it started up a discussion online, especially with over 9k upvotes, as well as more than 184k views.
The Imgurian is far from the only medical professional (whether fresh out of medical school or a seasoned veteran) to point out just how untypical and stressful the current situation is. For instance, a New York City emergency room nurse with 12 years of experience told the BBC that there is a shortage of equipment to take care of patients.
She revealed to the BBC that doctors and nurses are being rationed personal protective equipment (or PPE for short). “We’re getting one N-95 mask and we’re having to reuse it for five shifts.”
“Before this pandemic, you were never to reuse this equipment. It was one-time use and it was thrown out. It was discarded. Now we are being told to use it for our shift, put it in a paper bag and save it for the next shift. After five shifts, we turn it in and we’ll get a new one. We’re running out of basic supplies because all of our patients are requiring so much,” she said.
Whether you believe that doctors and nurses did or didn’t sign up for this, it’s obvious that it’s difficult and dangerous for them to do their jobs while some are lacking basic equipment. So if you know any medical professionals in your life, send them your love and support. They need it right now.

People assume that nurses, doctors, and other people who interact with those who are ill are trained for this. The reality is, they aren't. This is something totally new, something that hasn't been experienced on this level since the Spanish Flu pandemic. I guess people are misunderstanding the message here. These people signed up for this..but they aren't being given the proper tools or the proper respect to fight this thing. I am a nurse. I have been a nurse for more than 20 years. I have worked in public health, hospitals and in surgery centers. No one signs up for this. That is like saying that the grocery stores signed up for this. Yes, they stock toilet paper. Can we expect them to have a plan and resources for the panic buying? Well, I *was* trained for that, but that didn't mean I could do it for a lifetime. Not after seeing kids die. I still help, but not as a medical doctor. We're down ten masks and forty nitrile gloves each, and there's not enough IPA (rubbing alcohol) to clean goggles and face shields so we can re-use them just in contact with the public/patient families (which is what I do as an advocate). We get one mask a day where I'm at, and even a surgical mask isn't mean tto last all day.... DId I sign up for this when I became a patient advocate? No. But it's what's needed, and we do the job, and we bear th enightmares, and someday maybe someone will say "thanks", but in th emeantime? The OP is correct. I am a doctor. We DID sign up for this, as we know we are taking on the most qualified jobs to take care of the sickest people in our community. It's just a really bad situation. Working in healthcare is a calling. This is so hard. But I still consider myself honored to be part of the front lines of dealing with this. My spouse volunteered to be assigned as a Corona doctor, knowing he does not have proper PPE. While somewhat hopeful, he also knows the likelihood that he probably will not get sufficient PPE for the duration. That was his choice, knowing what we know now, and having the agreement and support of his family—we have resources that many don’t. In his case, yes he did sign up for this. That said, he completely understands and respects colleagues who want, need, or choose to step away from the profession at this time. Nobody in healthcare (or most other professions) signed up for what COVID-19 is bringing. People expecting medical caregivers, without proper PPE and other personal and professional support, to just carry on should think about what it will mean when the exposed caregivers themselves catch the virus. Will critics rush go help the sick in their stead? Didn’t they sign up for that when they chose to publicly define the “right” behavior of society members during this crisis?
I am a nurse, have been for 10 years. We are not trained for every situation, we are trained to think quickly and efficiently for the betterment of our patients. We did not sign up to be martyrs because our leaders decided we could do this with blind eyes. We are people first, we have family and friends too which some people chose to forget. I applaud them but I am a bit more thankful to the people working tiresome double shifts in the factorys, providing the food for everyone, yet they are being forgotten about because they are hidden behind big metal doors while retail staff and the NHS get all the applause...

Imagine teachers faced with school shootings not once, but daily / hourly.Would we eventually expect them to step up and deal with it? My sister works in the ER. The hospital just told the staff that if they are exposed to Corona virus, they are to continue working, and cannot leave until they start showing symptoms. This plus no PPE ( Personal Protection Equipment ) is technically Human Endangerment. She could get fired for speaking publicly. Guys, if you or someone you know is having to work in these conditions, go to the news and let them know, but anonymous. This is perhaps the best way to get a company under fire.

This IS what we signed up for, she just did 't know it. As Nurse, when it is your true calling to heal the the physical and the human spirit, it is your calling and it is embedded in the theories of Nursing from the start. It all comes with the territory, family or no family to go home to, it is a reality. In America, we have the luxury of full wear every day, in third world countries, this is Nursing everyday. I would request that doctors and nurses were made to read the stories of scientist like Madame Curie and her husband Pierre Curie, the story of Pasteur, doctors who dealt with leprosy, etc. Those are examples I look up to up. The hard part is the families of the dying can't even say goodbye. Doctors, Nurses, RT are getting sick and some died because there's shortage of PPE. And the thought of having to decide instantly which life to save first. They didn't signed up for it.

What's heart breaking? Telling families they cant visit. No you cant send in meals. You family member has a medical appointment but we cant send them . No the pharmacy does not have your meds. Why do I have a mask and cant give your family member one? Yes you can see your family member ,but only if their dying. No your doctor is not coming to see you or allowed in the building Yes we have to let positive tested people in the building but your not allowed to leave Yes I worn my safety equipment into multiple sick peoples rooms and now I'm here to examine you. Tell fellow workers yes this disease can kill you, now go take care of your patients and reuse your disposable paper personnel protection items again. My sister works in the ER. The hospital just told the staff that if they are exposed to Corona virus, they are to continue working, and cannot leave until they start showing symptoms. This plus no PPE ( Personal Protection Equipment ) is technically Human Endangerment. She could get fired for speaking publicly. Guys, if you or someone you know is having to work in these conditions, go to the news and let them know, but anonymous. This is perhaps the best way to get a company under fire.

There are teenagers at grocery stores who also didn't sign up for this, getting paid A LOT LESS, and they are operating with more uncertainty and less PPE than you. No one is forcing you to work this job. So quit. Grocery store workers are getting $15-20k with no health care in the US.

This IS what we signed up for, she just did 't know it. As Nurse, when it is your true calling to heal the the physical and the human spirit, it is your calling and it is embedded in the theories of Nursing from the start. It all comes with the territory, family or no family to go home to, it is a reality. In America, we have the luxury of full wear every day, in third world countries, this is Nursing everyday. The worst of this situation is that some people are not recognizing the necessity of in place shelter, and with this comes frustration because healthcare workers are at full capacity because of this negligence. So, please, stay home, stay home not locked up but stay home knowing that you are safe, safer, and creating less work and problems for everyone else. IT IS the hour of need, we HAVE to be in the front lines, this is what we do. This IS what we signed up for!
I thank God everyday for the medical professionals who treat the coronavirus inflicted, whilst trying to prevent further outbreak. I also appreciate all those who provide essential services, such as hospital staff, police, postal workers, pharmacists, etc. Please be well.
People assume that anything you choose, you accept ALL the responsibilities of it. But there is a huge difference between understanding the risks and taking it on. Do military members understand that they may go to war, may die, may have to kill someone? Yes! But does that mean they are gonna just waltz into WWIII like a deranged death wish Rambo? No! I don't understand why others can't apply empathy towards others, in general. I mean are mothers not allowed to complain if their child covers their rug with poop from their own diaper? I would request that doctors and nurses were made to read the stories of scientist like Madame Curie and her husband Pierre Curie, the story of Pasteur, doctors who dealt with leprosy, etc. Those are examples I look up to up. The whining, over-paid, "never know what's wrong with you" of today I loathe.

It is ironic that the current administration and Senate call themselves "conservatives." There is nothing conservative about not being prepared for crises. I am socially very liberal. Technically I am fiscally conservative, but I can't call myself that because the word has been corrupted. I save. I avoid debt. I set aside resources for the future. I understand that the well-being of my community is directly related to my well-being. I wish the "conservatives" running our country did. The hard part is the families of the dying can't even say goodbye. Doctors, Nurses, RT are getting sick and some died because there's shortage of PPE. And the thought of having to decide instantly which life to save first. They didn't signed up for it.
