How Much Water Do You Eat?

As the record-setting California drought continues, everyone is encouraged to reduce the water footprint. Numerous experts tell us to think twice before taking a hot relaxing bath, to install low-flow shower heads, to purchase water-efficient toilets, and so on. It’s all very nice but hardly anyone knows that “the food we eat makes up more than 2/3 of our total water footprint”, as the GRACE Communications Foundation has reported. So, if we really want to make the change, we have to change our eating habits. You may ask how to do that and the answer is more than simple – eat more plant-based food.

The Guardian says that “meat production requires much higher amount of water than vegetables. IME state that to produce 1kg of meat requires between 5,000 and 20,000 liters of water whereas to produce 1kg of wheat requires between 500 and 4,000 liters of water.” Ecology explains that the difference is so radical because “you have to account for the water the animals drink and also the water that goes into growing their feed.” Even California’s Governor Jerry Brown claimed that “we should be eating veggie burger” in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday night.

As Ecology says, “you might be thinking, but the beef at the supermarket have already been grown. That water is already used, so we might as well eat it. However, if we buy and eat water intensive foods now, the food industry will continue to grow or even increase growing them in the future.” That’s why the best time to change our eating habits is today.

If you are still not sure whether it’s worth it to cook beans instead of beef tonight, scroll down and check out some statistics.

Im a farmer of waterfowl and poultry. And I eat less meat because I see, first hand, how much goes in to a livestock animal. Everything from massive amounts of water, to massive amounts of grains to supporting low wage slaughterhouse employees and the shipping costs and packaging cists and transportation costs all along the way...... ugh. Its awful. And yes, Nestle and other major corporate monsters ARE hugely important to stop. But agriculture is no longer truly sustainable anymore. And no- we cant become vegetarians and solve the problem. Im not sure there is a solution anymore.

Why do you think we cannot solve the problem by becoming vegetarians? It would immediately put a drastic halt to much of the water consumption. The United Nations believes that veganism can save the world from many of the problems we face and is going on a huge campaign to promote the lifestyle. http://www.unep.org/resourcepanel/Portals/24102/PDFs/PriorityProductsAndMaterials_Report.pdf

Animal agriculture creates soil, water and air pollution.. It's takes a lot of land and water.. All the food which is used to feed animals for meat, so people can eat meat, could feed about 4 x More People if eaten directly by people..

So instead of telling Nestle to stop robbing people with their bottled water, they'll just tell us not to eat. F**k you. I'll eat whatever I want, because a piece of chocolate certainly isn't the issue here. Way to try and distract everyone, so companies like Nestle can keep f*****g everyone over.

I guess it depends on what the chicken eats, but yeah, 196 l of water sounds more like what a chicken would need its entire life. We had a few chickens, they barely drank anything and only ate.. Well, whatever they could find in our garden, really. Grass, herbs and seeds that would have grown there anyway (we didn't have to water it or anything, rain water was more than enough), insects passing through, our leftovers that would just have been thrown away if it wasn't for the chickens.. And so on. Perhaps that much water is needed in industrial farming, but if everyone had a few chickens and kept them the way we did, eggs and chicken would be no problem at all.

If ungreatful people just stop eating and breathing all together. :D who the hell are you to turn down a meal while there are people starving in the world and would give just about anything to work and have a meal everyday. I live in Fresno, California and the drought hit us HARD. We can only water our backyards/front yards twice a week, but only on specific days. If we don't follow these rules we get fined. Not only that, summer in Fresno is hell. It gets up to 110 degrees and theres no water...great.

I might be missing something here but you still need protein if you don't eat meat? And nuts are one of the substitutes. But a couple of months ago Californians were complaining about the amount of water they use growing almonds. On the figures I found a 1kg of almonds takes 16000L so is worse than beef/pork etc

As a hog farmer who keeps close track of the water he uses, this blog post is bunk to the point of being ridiculous. We also grow our own garden and keep track of the water we use there. If our tomatoes took 214 litres to grow one kg of tomatoes, our well would run dry and not be able to keep up. This is not the case so I call bunk on this bit of writing and graphics.

After more than 1 month I still have red lines there. What I want to say is that the power of water is endless!!! And also that, you know, also animals have to go to the piggy room. So they return the water into the cycle.

There are no excuses to eat anything that comes from an animal. Animal agriculture is destroying our planet and all life on it, and 60 BILLION animals every year have to suffer and die for it, for NOTHING. Eating animals does serious damage to your health as well, since humans are not meat-eaters/omnivores, but naturally 100% herbivores (or frugivores to be exact). Our natural diet consists of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. That's all! GO VEGAN, it's the best choice you'll ever make in your life! <3
