Dad Builds A Heated Cat House With Night Vision Camera To Make Sure The Stray Cats Make It Home Safely
A few years back, Maria Cassano spotted a stray cat clutching a kitten trying to make it through her father’s backyard. She immediately got worried whether the mother would have enough nutritious food to produce milk for her newborn kitten. Maria’s dad was quite skeptical about feeding the neighborhood’s homeless cats, but she managed to convince him to make an exception and took good care of their so-named Mama the cat. The baby kitten was soon adopted by their neighbor and the Cassano family carried on feeding the stray felines of the area.
As winter was coming to Long Island, they started fearing the harsh weather conditions for the cats and this is where Maria’s dad truly comes into the story to save the day: he came up with an idea to build a cat house. Not the biggest fan of pets in the house, her dad Steve still wanted to help out less fortunate cats.
This is Mama, a cat that was looking for a shelter for her newborn kitten and ended up living in the cat house

The crafty dad ordered all necessary waterproof materials for a heated cat house to build on a base in their backyard. Mama the cat had a second kitten and Maria’s dad took it even further by installing a camera in the cat house so that he could keep an eye on whether they made it there safely every night. The Cassano family didn’t expect to end up snapping a bunch of cute photos of the fluffy stray cats gratefully sleeping away in their shelter.

Maria managed to bring Mama the cat and her kitten to a local vet in order to get them checked out and vaccinated. She was assured that Mama was well enough to survive winter, but her kitten was too young to brave the winter. She ended up taking care of the kitten, later finding him a loving home for adoption.
The quite comfortable cat house started being frequented by new feral cats and now Mama gets to hang out with Inky and Finky. Turned out that the strays are very independent and don’t come inside the house or let the Cassanos touch them. But the family is more than happy to provide the cats with a cosy place to live and share their backyard.

Since the first cat house, they now have a “cat igloo” and a few extra houses so that all their purring residents can stay warm and healthy. The Cassanos now jokingly refer to all of the cat houses as “Steve’s condos”—named after the dad.

Another good thing to do for community cats is trap them and have them fixed.
I think some of the cats in post already have been, they have clipped ears :)

ellisrayner what the heck do you mean by your comment? How many cats do you take care of? The most we can do to stop stray animals' suffering is make sure they don't have so many offspring.
Load More Replies... I once visited Volgograd and there were lots of stray dogs around with lots of puppies. It was October and already becoming quite cold. I asked a local man I had befriended if there was some kind of organisation that would round them up or help control the population. He laughed and said "Yes, we call it winter". A very pragmatic people the Russians.
When the Olympics were in Russia, they just went around and shot all the stray animals to get "rid of " the problem. Sad. I guess bullets, clubs and poison was cheaper then love and wisdom. Cavemen!😾🤦♀️

My neighbors are horrible. We had a stray family that lived in our neighborhood. They didn't bother anyone. They mostly just slept under people's bushes. One of them called animal control to come and round them all up. The people were going at this old lady because she was feeding them. I don't get it. People are just a mess sometimes
Unfortunately, not everyone is a cat lover or animal lover of any sort. Two years ago, I purchased a padded pet house for the neighbourhood stray cats, and put out food and water everyday. I live in Canada, so the water part is tricky in winter as it freezes quite rapidly. I salute the Cassano family for being kind to the strays in their area.

It breaks my heart these kids have no inside forever homes. I'm grateful that we still have some good humans that exist. Thank you for caring for those in need.
About two years ago at my old house a few months before we moved we found a stray cat that just kept coming back to our house. We would feed her and kept calling her kitty because she looked young, my parents were trying to decide if we should keep her. When my grandma was in town she looked at the cat and said, "She looks a little fat, maybe she's pregnant." My parents said that if she was we couldn't keep her. My dad took her to the vet and they said she was about 3-4 years old and that she was pregnant and that it wasn't her first time. So my parents said that we couldn't keep her. Then a few weeks later my mom found someone who was willing to take the kittens after they were born, and that's what she did so then my parents filled out adoption papers and she is now our cat. Her name is still kitty because she only responds to that now, she lives outside because our inside cat doesn't like her and she has lived outside her whole life, sometimes she catches little animals.
Like squirrels and birds and one time she even left a owl on the back porch. But I love her so much and I'm very happy we got to keep her.
