Turns Out Washing Machines Do Eat Socks, But There Were More Surprising Things That We Found…
My husband and I are property managers, currently we are managing a manufactured home park. Most parks, like apartment complexs have laundry rooms, ours is no different.
Today, my husband got tired of fooling with one of the washing machines that was just not working properly and decided to take it apart, starting with the bottom panel. To his shock, this is what he found…
Socks, underwear, a credit card… and that is just what was in the bottom of the machine. When he removed the water pump that removes the water from the machine, he found about $7.00 in change.
Now, for those of you that SWEAR, your machine eats your small things, and have been told by “professionals” and others that this fable just is not true… Here is the proof!
I don’t know what to say! 25 years he has been doing this job, and for 25 years he has been working on appliances, including washers and dryers. But NEVER have we seen this!
So next time you are missing socks, just remember! That washing machine might just be hungry!

Share on FacebookThis is why put put socks, undies, and bras into the bra bag. My father is an appliance service man, after seeing my sister's underwire from her bra make our dryer explode we know better. If you have any doubts about something fitting between the drum and the machine casing either stuff it in a bra bag or hand wash it. :)
Not everything can be put in a dryer - bras with an under wire should never be put in a dryer because they can get very hot.

Most people have no idea what lurks in side a washer. My Mom's washer started to stink. I mean really reek! Like a gym locker room that hasn't been cleaned in yonks. I looked up directions on the net to find out how to take the top off etc. When I got the top and front off, I swear the paint in the laundry room started to peel. I bet you could have smelled that funk 2 miles down the road. Inside were not only socks, but two jock straps, a bra (one my Mom swore someone stole off the clothes line!), assorted baby clothes, a missing lens from my Dad's glasses, my work ID badge that went walk about 8 years ago, $8.75 in quarters and some gross material that looked like it was breathing. The washer was so god awful that we decided to scrap it, and trip down to Sears and we got Mom a new washer. She spent a couple of weeks rewashing everything. After that experience I take apart my washer a couple times a year. I think manufactures should tell owners to do the same.
mine has started to smell too....hmmm....it's a top loading fairly simple one. maybe it's time to check into that more deeply.
Load More Replies...You don't need a technician for that machine, you need an exorcist!
Another case of being told what we already knew. Nevertheless DAMN! That washing machine is possessed!
So if all those cloths got down there why wasn't the washer leaking water out on the floor? If cloth can get down there so can the water and those look pretty dry.
How is this even possible? I guess I have neve seen a machine like this up close. Mine's a small one and I don't think anything as big as socks can go between the drum and seal, it's pretty tight. Confused... I do find cotton swabs and change in the drain filter from time to time, though.
My fiance swears that the washing machine eats his socks... wonder how many of them he'll find if he opens that baby up... and maybe he'll find my missing underwear too. If he does, I'll know that my washing machine has a taste for lace.
I think this might be just a King dryer, because I swear half of those socks belong to my kids but is definitely not my dryer...stargate atlaundry?
Some of those sock are great! I'd have hated to lose them. Also, I'm disappointed because I was rooting for a secret dimension with an entrance at the back of the washing machine theory (The Orange Sock, the Black with Green Stripes Sock Puppet and the Washing Machine). This took that magic away. :( .Damn.
I have been telling my wife this for years. Thanks for proving my sanity !
Is it a washer or a dryer? If the washer ate so many socks, wouldn’t water get through there either? Not to mention wet socks and such, starting to mold and cause a bad smell? (And how wouldn’t you notice that you’re missing so many socks)
This is a commercial machine. One family didn't lose all that stuff.

Load More Replies...If this was a washing machine then water would be everywhere if socks were getting through. Therefore this is a dryer - obviously very cheap with the rubber seal around the door missing.
