50 Vintage Things That Were Cool Back In The Day, But Now Look Odd
Interview With AuthorWhile it’s true that most of the things we have now are very technologically impressive, there is just something downright cool about how stuff was made in the past. All those design tendencies that never took off, wood and leather. It can be fun to appreciate the sensibilities of designers from back in the day.
The “Little Slice of Vintage Life” Facebook group is dedicated to sharing pictures of cool, old things. We also got in touch with the page's creator and admin to learn more. Spirograph Was Something I Could Play With For Hours
Yeah, you could actually produce something that looked good if you weren't talented at art. These were wonderful.
Load More Replies...They keep making knock off versions, even now, so definitely not odd!
Load More Replies...I was always when you used a hole furthest from the center
Load More Replies...Sometimes The Best Ideas Don't Need To Change
The safety pin design hasn't changed much but I can vouch for the metal got cheaper and they don't hold in place as strongly.
Buy safety pins from a quilting store. Quality is much better.
Load More Replies...The lids on bic pens now have holes in them in case someone swallows them. Circa 1991.
Yeah, and as I learned in elementary school in the early 90s, those caps with holes also make an awesome whistle if you blow in them right.
Load More Replies...If it works well and does what you need it to do, don't try to fix it or improve it.
In 1950 the cap on the Biro didn't have a hole in the top but after a few people choked on them there was a hole put in so that some air could pass until the cap was removed in hospital.
In The Products We Don't Use Much Anymore Category, Gummed Reinforcements To Fix Ripped Holes In Notebook Paper
I used these for many years working as a file clerk. They had a certain yucky taste. And there are preglued, clear reinforcement circles, they peel off of a sheet, that are tougher and hold up better
I use plastic pockets. Got sick of all the faff with putting these in place.
Yep, still sold at office supply store. We still used them in the last office I worked.
These were on the supply list for my High Schooler. We bought them and they did not get used.
Bored Panda got in touch with the creator and administrator of “A Little Slice of Vintage Life” and she was kind enough to share some more details with us. Since its creation in 2010, it’s amassed hundreds of thousands of followers, but we were curious to hear why she decided to create a group in the first place.
“I started my page over 13 years ago as a fun pastime because I loved vintage stuff. I grew up in Hollywood and my parents were make up artists but they also owned an antique store and that fostered my love for old stuff.”
The Frigidaire Flair Range By General Motors In Aqua With Matching Fridge
I had that stove growing up, at the time I didn’t realize it was kind of rare, it was cool I still miss the way the ovens opened, it was much safer when hot. The pull out burners were fine but mostly just remained out rather than pushed in. I really don’t understand why they quit making things that worked so well. That oven door design (it pushes out and up so it’s out of the way) is something I miss to this day.
I Suddenly Feel The Need To Practice My Printing
You can download "handwriting line" fonts & make your own worksheets.
I remember these, the quality of the paper was barely better than newsprint though.
This Was The Jungle Gym We Had At My Elementary School
That was the little kids' section at my elementary school. The monkey bars were taller and more challenging in the bigger kids section, and produced more palm blisters from hanging onto bare metal surfaces
Oh yeah, so many blisters from practicing hanging upside down and flipping off or seeing how many bars you can skip.
Load More Replies...Had the same one at a couple of elementary schools I attended, but they were installed on the asphalt part of the playground. Kids learned that you don't do anything too crazy on it.
Had these at my primary school in NZ - placed on the asphalt. I think there was a small version for the 5-6 yr olds and a taller one for the 7-8 yr olds. The older ids had a separate playground.
I was just going to add this was long before they'd build on wood chips or padded mats; the picture with the dirt was not in any school I attended. You take a tumble and you're down for the count.
Load More Replies...Given the size of its viewership, we wanted to know more about how she manages to select what content to post. “My main focus for the page is to not post things that can be controversial (I follow enough other pages to see what gets people into a lather) and nothing political, even though I am very passionate about my political views, I don't want it on my page.”
1975 Chrysler Imperial Front Seat. When Cars Came With A Living Room Couch
As long as you've also got In-a-Gadda-da-Vida on 8 track, you're golden
Load More Replies...I had a Buick 78 special. It had 6 ashtrays ,5 cigarette lighters and the seats were so soft and velvety my passengers would fall asleep after a few miles!
Pull Down Maps Used To Be In All The Classrooms
What's that big blue bit at the bottom? I can't quite read it...does it say "Gulf of...Mexico?"
I'm Finnish but we had maps that were made in Germany. We did NOT use the WW2 historical map because in that, Finland was colored so that it was in Germany's side...
They wouldn't e relevant today. A lot of names have been changed in the world. Oh sorry. Looking at a map of the US. I forgot that the US only knows about America.
Only knows, indeed. Since January 20/25 only cares about 100% in DJT's tiny mind.
Load More Replies...My husband & I have talked about getting a World Map for our TV room, which is basically a "Pirate's Cove" of treasures.
Schools still have pull down maps, in better districts they are up to date.
The Pokey Little Puppy Golden Book A Childhood Staple
I gave one to my niece about 15 years ago. It looks exactly the same!
Illustrated by Gustafson Tenggren who did much of the design for Disney’s Snow White
My now-13-year-old loved his copy of this. I don't know how long it's been passed down through his mom's family, but her great grandma had put her name in it in 1957,so at least 54 years by the time he was born.
We were also curious to hear her thoughts on why the page ended up gathering so many followers. “I just want people to enjoy a walk down memory lane and give them some joy in remembering fun things about the past. I also work very hard on keeping the spammers and trolls (people who want my followers to send them friend requests) off my page by blocking certain words so their comments never get seen.”
Just A Basic Tricycle, But It Brings Back Memories!
The bench on the rear wheels are for a 2nd person to ride, standing there and holding onto the shoulders of the driver. Really fun as you drifted down a hill
We went through several of these in various sizes (six children in my family).
They still make these actually. Same steel construction and everything. My kid has one
I remember riding in circles around my dad while he was grilling. We had a courtyard with what used to be a working fountain in the center but it was always empty as long as we lived there. I used to ride circles around it and my brother and I would climb in and play with our action figures. For some reason this is one of the clearest memories of childhood that I have. I also remember burying G.I. Joes and things in the back yard before we moved hoping that the next kids that lived there would find them.
I'm in the Philippines and I just bought one like this for my grandson.
We saved my daughter's trike and gave it to my granddaughter. She loves it.
These were really hard to pedal! I wasn't a big gid but get that thing moving required serious leg work.
Tupperware 2 Quart Drink Container, I Know My Grandma Always Had One In The Fridge
I have one. Did you know that the Smithsonian has some Tupperware in their collection?
Always full of something (bug juice when my brother and I were kids, sun tea later).
Teeter Totters Were Great Until Your Friend Jumped Off And You Slammed Your Rear Into The Ground
Or they would just annoy you by staying on the ground and leave you up there?
Not when you weigh what I did XD Try that and I launch you into LEO...
Load More Replies...Do they really call them 'teeter-totters'? See-saw is the name I grew up with in the UK.
We had these at playground, but there was a half of tire under seats, so you won't slam on the ground.
Or if you slid down one and got a butt full of splinters. Or was that just me?
I've seen pictures of kids in Korea playing on these, difference is they STAND on them, and jump when they go up
I have a video of my sister arguing with my family about who should go on the seesaw with her, I think because she was scared one of us would get off and drop her to the ground.
I never trusted these guys. Don't recall any trauma, but steered clear.
Chinese Checkers Were A Weekend Favorite
"Do you have Chinese Checkers?" "No, but we *do* have a few Russian Inspectors!"
We loved when teacher would allow us to play this. It wasn't often because some of the boys would pocket the marbles.
My grandad had a set he had made from wood and it used marbles for each colour (and one section had a type of seed or something). He kept it in a drawer of a coffee table he made, which had a particular smell, because of the wood and varnish he used. I inherited the table (I don't know what happened to the Chinese checkers though!) and every time I open the drawer, the smell reminds me of playing Chinese checkers with him :)
My Mum and I used to play this into my early teens. Didn't get bored in those days and really got to know our parents. I can't imagine eating my tea and then leaving the family and going to my room to interact with a machine. I feel children miss so much these days
I Had No Idea There Were So Many Different Types Of 45 Record Adapters
I've never figured out why they didn't just make the hole in the record smaller
Here's a deep dive into why they are like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbFgVjijrHI .
Load More Replies...Where I lived , back in the day it was all yellow adaptors. I did see a man with a gold one made of real gold . He was a musician. Apparently it is something the old R&R singers have made for themselves when they have the ka'ching . I have to say , it was very cool looking. Great nostalgic piece.
Let's see we had ones like the red top ty and the pink one on the left.
I've still got perhaps 100 45s in two cases in the attic. If I was more ambitious I'd go check, but I think every single adapter is yellow, like the 2nd one in on the bottom row.
We Had The Exact Ice Cube As The One On Top. You Had To Be A Body Builder To Crack It Open If It Was Really Full
I can hear the skreeeeeeek of the ice even now. And the near-frostbite you got from the handle, yikes!
These ice trays are in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. They once had an exhibit on design and function and they had 2 of top one in the display.
Those things were evil. The lever always seemed to get frozen along with the ice.
We had these when I was a kid in the 1950s. We also took out the metal dividers and used the trays to make ice cream.
Oh yeah! I can hear them now, and the resistance of lever. Love seeing 'em, don't miss 'em. Nupe.
Scholl Exercise Sandals. They Always Hurt My Feet But I Know A Lot Of Ladies Loved Them
If your foot slipped off and the arch of your foot hit the edge...OUCH!
Hate is too mild a word to say how I feel about them. I wore them while walking on a grass sidewalk to my friend living 2 doors away. Stepped into a mole hill in the dark and shattered my foot and ankle. I have enough metal keeping my foot and ankle together that I set off alarms at airports ect. Every time this happens I lift the middle finger to Dr. William Mathias Scholl
Yeah these look so hazardous, have never wanted a pair. I have narrow feet. They would not stay on.
Load More Replies...I just bought a pair because I can't find my original pair. You can order them online.
Hate these, the evil b!tch that jokingly called itself our mother used them to beat us about the head with if her hand hurt from slapping us around. Once saw her & her friend hold my eldest sibling down in a chair and rain blows down on the sibling, the sh!tty mate offered to take over if the b!tch got tired.
everybody had these when i was in high school. but if you accidentally clipped your ankle while walking, babyyyyyyyy, it made you re-examine every decision you ever made in life up to that point. whew!
Easy Bake Oven. One Of The Toys I Wanted So Badly But Never Got As A Kid
It made the best cakes….. they were never fully cooked in the middle and someone always got burned
I love how potentially dangerous our toys were. I had a wood burning kit when I was 10.
I had the original "Creepy Crawlers" set with the "Thingmaker" that was like, 400 degrees! Ahh... the smell of cooking plastic and burning the śhit out of your fingers!
Load More Replies...I didn't want to bake with this (fire hazard) oven, I wanted to eat cakes. That's it. There were never enough cakes being made.
I had the 80's version of it. It didn't come with quite so much stuff. It was awesome though!
Wait?! They actually cooked? Wouldn't that be considered dangerous for little kiddies maybe burning themselves? I've never seen one in my country and always assumed they were just play pretend.
There was a light bulb inside to "bake". It took FOREVER.
Load More Replies...The Lunch Counter At Woolworths
The Sears had one, including the circulating cold-drink dispenser as seen at the near end of the lunch counter. In Seattle, the Sears building was a huge, multi-story department store with a massive parking lot in the front and the back. Starbucks headquarters operates in that building now, instead of the big Sears logo on top it's the mermaid logo
We have a Rexall D**g Store in Vienna, VA, that still had a lunch counter into the 2010s. EDIT: The Rexall is still there (with a candy selection that fell through a time warp) but the lunch counter is gone.
Wow! I live just a few minutes' drive from there, so maybe I'll go over there and marvel at it.
Load More Replies...This historical significance of a woolworths lunch counter is a bit strong for me to want to "wax nostalgic" on this scene.
We went to these in Maryland when I was a child. Not often, but for a rare treat.
https://www.hungrybrowser.com/phaedrus/mpwoolworth.htm has LOTS of recipes from the Woolworth Lunch Counter! Their mac & cheese, chicken croquettes, lunch counter cheesecake...
I had my first reuben sandwich at a similar counter (it was a Kresge's store) and it was delicious! Kresge's later became Kmart.
Frosted Bar Glasses With Gold Accents
I had a set of those in the holder with a matching pitcher. Sold it at our yard sale several years ago for probably no more than $10
My Grandmother had a set. They were called "highball" glasses.
Wait are these special? I have 2 identical ones lmao, I’m looking at one right now
Back When Fast Food Places Had Ashtrays
I’ve got a small collection. I like the ones from old motels. Find a lot of those at yard sales.
1930sapartment Size Jadeite Enamel Kitchen Electric Stove And Oven
That color almost belongs on a Bridgeport.
Load More Replies...Until I Found This Picture, I Didn't Realize Other People Had The Same Measuring Spoon Set That I Grew Up With
I have two of these in my kitchen drawer rt now...
So do I! One for wet ingredients and one incase I then need a dry set.
Load More Replies...I grew up with these. They were made of aluminum, and super flimsy.
Yep! I got mine from my Grandmother and still use them regularly.
We have the full set in our miscellaneous utensil drawer although they have escaped their retainer ring.
Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo. This Was Some Of The Best Smelling Stuff!
LOVED this stuff. Got more compliments about nice-smelling hair when I used it, too. The new version just isn't the same.
Wish they still made it. For A while they had a body wash and perfume, too.
My Dad used this until he couldn't get it anymore, at least until the early 90s
The best shampoo I have ever used. They say it's being made again but it's not the same; it has too many new formulas but not the original.
This, Body On Tap and Agree were all great smelling shampoos... Oh and "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific!"
Yup! In the days before conditioner existed. I was really sad when they stopped selling this stuff and replaced it with all the honey-and-oat and whatever “modern” stuff.
These Made Eating Corn On The Cob Even More Fun
It's summer, so it's corn season. Go drive to the farm stand where you can get 10 ears of sweet corn for one dollar
I still have a set (over 50 years old) and use them when eating corn on the cob at home
I still have some of those from the 1950s. The plastic is, unfortunately, too brittle now to actually use them.
If You Had A Crock Pot Back In The 70s, It Was Very Likely This Rival In Avocado Green
Before Instapot, before Air Fryers, this was the convenient kitchen appliance.
It still is! I use mine (which is about 25 years old) to make chili, beef stew, spaghetti sauce, pulled pork, etc.
Load More Replies...Anyone have the electric frying pan? Made the best fried chicken ever.
I still have this. I took it from my parents's closet when I got my first apartment. I put it in storage when I moved out of the country, when I moved back it went into the new house. IT still works perfectly
Wow. Is it inconvenient to clean? My mother's was. Mine has a removable pot.
Load More Replies...I still have one but it's in "Harvest Gold!" Has the removable crock.Thing is like 50 years old and it still works!
I don't remember what color my first one was, but I've had 4 (well-used) over the last 45 yrs--only went with a multi-use generic instapot within the last 5 yrs
We Had A Dustpan Like This. It Fit On The End Of The Broom
These are much more efficient for sweeping than the plastic versions sold today. You can find them in thrift stores and vintage stores
The plastic ones leave the never ending line of dirt that makes you say "Fk-it" and you go get the vaccum.
Load More Replies...What? Why put it on the end of a broom? The handle's angle is all wrong. The hole is to there so you can hang it up on a nail.
My grandma had one of these for years and years. It finally broke just before she died.
Diving Lady Neon Sign For The Starlite Motel Mesa Az. I Imagine This Must Have Looked Cool Lit Up At Night
The divers would light up in sequence. It made it look like she was moving. Before the light rail destroyed Main Street.
In Melbourne we had a Skipping Girl Vinegar sign as part of the skyline for decades.
Trouble I Can Still Feel What It Was Like Pushing Down The Dice Dome
We still have it and I think it's on about the 4th or 5th generation frustrated souls now.
Load More Replies...So could my mom. She would take it away after a while 🥺
Load More Replies...We have this game still. It is the Star Wars version with the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.
We know this game as Kimble. If we ever go to a bar or pub we choose one that has board games and this is one of our favorites. We have a Zombie version at home that has glow-in-the-dark parts.
In Argentina it was called Ludo Matic, and you can still buy it at toy shops...
Mousetrap! I Loved Playing This!
It was more fun to put the trap together and roll the ball bearing down into the cup than it was to actually play the game.
That's because the trap never worked correctly lol! At least on my game!
Load More Replies...You build the trap, you run the marble through it and the whole thing collapses!
Load More Replies...I desperately wanted one of these until a friend of mine put me straight...it took ages (like Monopoly ages!) to play until the mousetrap was fully assembled and 99 times out of 100 it never worked properly.
Play Wigs. I Always Wondered What They Looked Like On, And Then I Found These Little Girls Wearing Them
I had one and wore it with my plastic high heeled sandals! I guess I wanted to grow up to be a floozy.
I actually had these exact wigs in the early 60's. The blonde was my favourite.
Me, too! With our candy cigarettes we were 7 year old vamps.
Load More Replies...They look like rigid plastic. I think Devo still wears them, but in a men's style.
On the cover of the New Traditionalists album, and at appropriate times during shows.
Load More Replies..."GUESS WHO I SAW at the "Piggly Wiggly" with your ex." (An old grocery store chain, very few left in 2025.)
The Barbie Camper That Used To Take Road Trips In The Backyard
Wow! Clearly patterned after the GM Motor Home, which was actually a pretty advanced design for the times!
Did Anyone Ever Live A House With These Antique Light Switches?
Apparently they were first introduced before 1900 but some stayed in use until the 40s. I seem to remember having a set in some house but can't remember where
Oh, heck, YES! We had a couple of those in the 'new' section of our farmhouse (added in the 1930s, about 100 years after the main section of the house was built)!
Yes! And the little telephone nook with a seat. Fond memories for sure.
They still make replacements for these... https://www.houseofantiquehardware.com/shop-by-type/vintage-lighting-electrical/antique-light-switches-outlets/push-button-switch?GCID=S14464x015&KEYWORD=old%20fashion%20light%20switch&partner=gpc&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19891509834&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1JjDBhDjARIsABlM2StAQheOuJgk9L8tDJQp6zakmROEWYaQr05s-E_BhXhEYx4IOyqDg6AaAhVAEALw_wcB
I've lived in several apartments that had this kind of light switch. They were invariably painted over with several thick coats.1970s and 80s; Massachusetts and upstate New York.
Mastermind
Yes! I had that exact version! (I wish I knew what had happened to it...)
Load More Replies...I defeated the long time neighborhood MasterMind champion because I could see her pieces in her glasses. I told her later. She's probably still mad.
My mum's favourite game! It took me a while to get the hang of it but my brother picked it up easily.
Wow man, loved that game. The couple in the photo are actually married to each other
Late 1970s Grocery Store Checkout With The "Scan Master". Nothing But Brown Paper Bags
Back in the day, needed those brown paper bags to cover your school books, a ritual at the begining of the school year.
For reals, we recycled back then without realizing it
Load More Replies...Yep. Plastic bags were going to save the planet. No more trees being cut down to make throw-away bags.
Load More Replies...They brought in plastic bags to save trees from becoming bags. Talk about things coming around again and again.
i still miss having my groceries in paper bags; and they were multi-use!
And the cashier is still standing. Why does sitting equal being lazy?
I used to do that, I think about £5 for a fortnight's groceries for two.
Load More Replies...Now, in nearby Maryland, they have banned plastic ... and charge 10 cents per paper bag.
Green Stamps And The Machine That Spit Them Out
Everyone remembers S&H Green Stamps, but *very* few people remember "Plaid Stamps". We collected them both.
"Hey Rosita, come quick, down at the cantina they`re giving green stamps with tequila. La la la la la la la la ....." - Pat Boone, Speedy Gonzales.
Back when churches weren't the only place people sought redemption.
In the UK we had green shield stamps - 5 books to get a posh ashtray....
There's a little tickle in the back of my brain that there used to be "White Stamps". Am I having a delusion?
I remember licking the stamps and putting them in the book. The first 50 or so were great, after that yuck, glue mouth.
I still have the party size coffee urn my mother got with these. Yes, it works.
An Amc Gremlin Was A Prize On The Price Is Right In 1974
Neat! I always loved the Gremlin. A lot of fun, if you chose the options carefully. But the picture is the '73. for 1974, the stripes were changed to the 'hockey stick' design. (This cheesed me off when I got my '74. I preferred the '73 stripes.) Gremlin-X-...e48b94.jpg
I think I like the straight better than the hockey stick. The 2 Gremlins we had had the hockey stock stripe.
Load More Replies...Ever so slightly off topic, but I saw a Jensen Interceptor in the wild yesterday! I nearly froze to death standing next to it from the sheer coolth of it...
I loved my Gremlin. Glowed bright purple under the lights at the gas station.
LOL They added non stock chrome mags and it's STILL ugly as heck. Though perhaps not as ugly as the AMC Pacer. And typing this made me think of the AMC Gremlin. It's like they had a goal to create ugly vehicles.
Look at a Cybertruck and tell me again that the Gremlin is ugly. (And those aren't 'chrome mags'. They're standard steel rims with bright trim rings and center inserts over the hubs. And those.wheels are most definitely factory stock. I had exactly the same ones on mine.)

1976 Saturday Morning TV Guide
I know, right? 🙄 BP's AI censor-bot needs to learn context!
Load More Replies...The numbers indicate on which tv channels the program would be shown. And it's listing is for that area's market: I remember the first vacation we took to California, I got disoriented by the TV channel numbers, they felt wrong
Right? I've lived where I live for decades now, and I still haven't gotten used to CBS being on channel 9. CBS is supposed to be channel 2!
Load More Replies...OK, I now wish I had caught the 11:30 a.m. episode of Westwind in which "An old man begs Tom and Robin to help him make a dive into a lagoon that harbors a shark thought to be a god."
That's a western Massachusetts TV Guide. I recognize all the channel numbers. Also, 8:30 was a bîtch, as my brother and I wanted to watch all three cartoons. We'd switch back and forth during the commercials.
Ghost Busters was a kid show. Different than the later Ghostbusters.
Load More Replies...Land of the Lost was a fun one for sure. I got to meet Wesley "Will Marshall" Eure at a convention once; incredibly nice guy.
Load More Replies...When the new fall issue came in the mail, I had to do all my TV planning. No recording or streaming!
Tupperware Mix-N-Stor
Not that helpful for measuring water, but a wonder when mixing up a family's amount of pancake batter
Exactly what mom used hers for - pancake batter.
Load More Replies...I see it too, Mr. Swallow. The kind of thing you'd find if you lifted #42.
Load More Replies...I hope every other lady still has hers and uses it too
Load More Replies...still have this - pretty beat up and more yellow than white but still great for pancake batter!
I still hat1 that I got at a yard sale in 81 or 82 along with a bunch of other Tupperware. The lady had been a Tupperware dealer and was moving and getting rid of multiples.
I have 2 in my kitchen right now. Not as shiny bright white, but I use them for cakes, cookies and as Sally said, Pancake batter.

I Still Have A Box Of My Childhood Marbles (I Haven't Lost All Of Them Yet)
We used to have a lunch box-sized box of marbles up in our attic. To keep me from getting into them when I was way too young, my parents told me that the box had dynamite in it. Looking back on it, it seems remarkable that they had that much faith in my common sense and ability to be well-behaved.
It would have had the opposite effect on my brother, I guarantee.
Load More Replies...Still have mine in a drawstring bank deposit bag from the 50s.
Like most of my collectables, I think I gave my marbles to my sister when I moved out, which I now regret :)
Mister Merry's Play Lighter. Perfect Of Baby's First Cigarette!
I remember we had chocolate cigarettes (and I was never sure if the paper stuff was supposed to be eaten or not), but this is....horrible. 🥺
We have candy cigarettes, liquorice pipes and toys like these........never smoked, never wanted to.
Back when every home had cigarettes on the coffee table and ashtrays all over.
My Mom Was Not A Fan Of Me Stomping Around The House On These
Stomping around the house? No. I had a great proficiency walking around on stilts. Came in handy years later in hiking in the mountains, rapelling etc
Looks like you got a lot to say sally ! Its nice to see we are relieving our old memories , nice work BP and keep expressing yourself sally !!!
Load More Replies...We never had these but I remember seeing ads for them on TV all the time.
I Had A Little Metal Cash Register Just Like This
There Was A Park That My Dad Used To Take Me To That Had This Slide
We went to play at a park with similar slide, and the park was given a name to reflect its space theme: Astro Park. Big name for a rocket ship slide and some swings, nothing else
Our local park has the modern version. There are two slides, a lower one and a higher twisty one. But they have to plastic slides, so kids miss out on the searing heat
There were some in various McDonalds around Melbourne. A farm my family used to go to on holiday was donated one for their playground in the early 2000s
Balboa Park in San Diego had a fun playground that included this slide when I was a kid in the 70’s
Memorial Park in Santa Monica, CA in the 70's had one...actually a fair amount taller that this one, but yeah...same death trap slide that would scald you on a summer day!

I remember when my TV weighed 200 pounds and the cat slept on it and my wife weighed 100. Now my TV weighs 100 pounds and the cat sleeps on my wife.
Looks like a rear projection TV. They didn't make CRTs that big.
I Had The Can Of Tinkertoys On The Left
Ours was the can on the right. Amazing that they were able to make a lid that screwed on to threads pressed into cardboard work as well as it did.
They were made out of wood, too. I imagine today's version is all plastic pieces.
They are, tried to buy some for my grandkids, very disappointed.
Load More Replies...My husband (67) is basically just a 12 year old at heart (which is why I love him so much). I tried so hard to find actual wooden Tinker Toys for Christmas one year, but alas. 3 years ago, my Stepmother found some and sent them to him. OMG - we play for hours at a time (I'm 62).
Everything Back In The 80s Needed A Ruffle Even A Denim Skirt
I loved them. Didn't get one though, because my mother said they were a waste of fabric and would make me look fat. She was probably right

I Remember Having A Pair Of These And Not Liking How Many Buttons I Had To Fool With Every Time I Used The Bathroom
Lol, imagine trying to get intimate with someone wearing these? Halfway through the buttons, "Jeez, it's like trying to f**k Napoleon up in here!"
My tum's too big these days - it'd split open.... :-(
Load More Replies...I had exactly one pair like this...but they had zippers instead of buttons. It was NOT an improvement, as there was no backing fabric behind the zipper. It pinch you to zip or unzip, and just wearing them caused uncomfortable zipper friction.
I Didn't Realize Twiggy Had So Many Different Products
Something to add onto the list of things children do not play with anymore, but were popular with children then, is Paper Dolls. First you have a cut-out picture (the doll) of a model, or a baby, or a girl, and her clothing is plain, or she's just wearing undergarments. The kit would include precut clothes to hang onto the doll's shoulders with paper flaps that folded over. Some kits you could draw or paint clothes for the doll. Later there was a computer game, same idea. Remember in the movie Clueless, when Cher is deciding what clothes to wear? The concept origins was in these paper dolls.
Thank you, Sally Moen, for that memory. I loved playing with paper dolls. They weren’t expensive so we had multiple sets. What about the dolls similar to paper dolls but were made of flat plastic and their clothes used static cling to stick to them.? Edit - later on in this post it showcases Colorforms! That’s what I was referring to.

The Sno Cone Machine We All Wanted
These looked like more fun than they were. You had to put your own ice cubes in the top and manually turn the handle to shave the ice. It was too much work for too little ice & the circular grater kept getting caught on the square ice cube edges. Then the syrup ran out and there weren't any replacements. Planned obsolescence.

I had a hand-me-down white hatchback 210 in the 90's. That was a tough little car.
This photo is brilliant too. The use of colour, shadow and light makes it almost look cel-shaded.
Every other person of driving age at my high school in the early 1980s had one of the hatchbacks. They were everywhere!
Back in the day I knew a few people that had them. Our first new car was a 1980 510 hatchback. 36 mpg, but went like a bat out of hell up to 6000rpm in 1st gear.
I had a tan 81 hatchback as my first . Had rust hole behind the front wheel you could put your fist through can't complain my aunt gave it to me.
"Dats a Datsun" was the phrase used in my neighborhood. I actually prefer the name Datsun over Nissan.
My first car was a used VW fastback, but the Datsun B-210 was my first new car. I saved up for several years and my father helped with the rest. I LOVED that car and had it well into the 80s.
I had a 2 door with trunk, in mid 90's. She was fast.

I Have Questions
This was a dealership in Fort Worth, Texas. The McDavid family had Pontiac dealerships in the DFW area. They ran local TV ads that featured their great dane named "Widetrack".
Bill McDavid's dealership was in downtown Ft Worth, Texas. Pontiac had a feature called the "Wide-Track Wheelbase." His dogs (all Great Danes) were all named "Widetrack." He had commercials that ran in the DFW Metroplex. He'd say something gimmicky like "we've got the biggest selection in Texas. Right, Widetrack?" and Widetrack would bark. At Christmas, his ads featured the jingle-bell song of barking dogs, with video synced to look as if Widetrack was barking the song. These ran for many years. I always thought it was the same dog. I didn't realize until I was an adult that he was naming a series of several dogs "Widetrack." Not only that, I thought Widetrack originally recorded that song. And then I begin to travel the country/world and I heard that song elsewhere. And I thought "...wow Widetrack is famous." I was so naïve.
I see on the window a picture of Little Lulu. Used to be a cute comic strip.

The Days Of Pink Rotary Dial Phones Are Sadly Gone
They were easy to hold between your head and shoulder, had heft to them and you got satisfaction from slamming them down when angry.
We had Bell Telephone come out to our school to teach us Telephone Etiquette. How to dial a number (it's not a push button), how many rings must you wait before giving up when you call someone, how to answer a call, how to hang up a call (NEVER slam the receiver down! Remember, you don't OWN the phone, you rent it from Bell). My neighbor had a cool feature: they had a plug-in phone, so you could move the phone around the house to plug into another outlet. All other phones were hard-wired into a wall outlet, so you had to stay near there to talk on the phone.
There is a Landline pod movement among families who want to delay giving kids smartphones. The kids can talk to their friends on the landline so vintage phones are getting snatched up.
Houses And Apartments Used To Have Built In Telephone Shelves With Shelf For A Phone Book Underneath
Our house was built in '53, and it has one of these shelves in the hallway!
Before 1980, nobody could own their phone: they just leased it from AT&T. “You will own nothing and be happy” isn’t a new idea
In my town, alot of homes were built from kits purchased from Montgomery Ward or Sears, then assembled on a lot. The interiors were standard, they all had phone kiosks. Unless house flippers gutted those homes' interiors, they all still have this

Using small chunks of dampened sponges, every window and mirror in the house had snowmen, snowflakes, Christmas trees, Santa's sleighs, nativity scenes, you name it, daubed onto them in pastel-colored Glass Wax. Very American. Other side of the ocean we had different things. My neighbour was very proud of her Sindy (Cindy?) doll, which was for a while more popular than Barbie because it was aimed to look more like a real girl rather than the...uh... idealised anatomy of a Barbie. Oh, and for a time in the mid 80s pixie boots were *everywhere*. No idea why. And let's not forget the delights of Hornby. Out of the price range my parents would be happy with, but a different neighbour (a retired gent) lived alone so he converted his dining room into this epic landscape. And being Brits, ZX Spectrum vs BBC Micro. I was firmly on the side of the tree nut - procedural BASIC *and* built-in assembler? 🥰

With all the 'stuff' that's available nowadays, I can't imagine my kids going through a nostalgia list like this in 30 years.
