While it’s true that most of the things we have now are very technologically impressive, there is just something downright cool about how stuff was made in the past. All those design tendencies that never took off, wood and leather. It can be fun to appreciate the sensibilities of designers from back in the day.

The “Little Slice of Vintage Life” Facebook group is dedicated to sharing pictures of cool, old things. We also got in touch with the page's creator and admin to learn more. Yeah, you could actually produce something that looked good if you weren't talented at art. These were wonderful.

The BIC pen actually did change. Back in 1950 and certainly through to the 1980s that I remember, the cap did not have a hole in the top. Wiki tells me that was added in 1991. (to reduce the risk of suffocation if it were swallowed).

In 1950 the cap on the Biro didn't have a hole in the top but after a few people choked on them there was a hole put in so that some air could pass until the cap was removed in hospital.

I had that stove growing up, at the time I didn’t realize it was kind of rare, it was cool I still miss the way the ovens opened, it was much safer when hot. The pull out burners were fine but mostly just remained out rather than pushed in. I really don’t understand why they quit making things that worked so well. That oven door design (it pushes out and up so it’s out of the way) is something I miss to this day.

I remember riding in circles around my dad while he was grilling. We had a courtyard with what used to be a working fountain in the center but it was always empty as long as we lived there. I used to ride circles around it and my brother and I would climb in and play with our action figures. For some reason this is one of the clearest memories of childhood that I have. I also remember burying G.I. Joes and things in the back yard before we moved hoping that the next kids that lived there would find them.

My grandad had a set he had made from wood and it used marbles for each colour (and one section had a type of seed or something). He kept it in a drawer of a coffee table he made, which had a particular smell, because of the wood and varnish he used. I inherited the table (I don't know what happened to the Chinese checkers though!) and every time I open the drawer, the smell reminds me of playing Chinese checkers with him :)

Apparently it is something the old R&R singers have made for themselves when they have the ka'ching . I have to say , it was very cool looking. Great nostalgic piece.

I've still got perhaps 100 45s in two cases in the attic. If I was more ambitious I'd go check, but I think every single adapter is yellow, like the 2nd one in on the bottom row.

The Sears had one, including the circulating cold-drink dispenser as seen at the near end of the lunch counter. In Seattle, the Sears building was a huge, multi-story department store with a massive parking lot in the front and the back. Starbucks headquarters operates in that building now, instead of the big Sears logo on top it's the mermaid logo

Neat! I always loved the Gremlin. A lot of fun, if you chose the options carefully. But the picture is the '73. for 1974, the stripes were changed to the 'hockey stick' design. LOL They added non stock chrome mags and it's STILL ugly as heck. Though perhaps not as ugly as the AMC Pacer. And typing this made me think of the AMC Gremlin. It's like they had a goal to create ugly vehicles.

Look at a Cybertruck and tell me again that the Gremlin is ugly. (And those aren't 'chrome mags'. They're standard steel rims with bright trim rings and center inserts over the hubs. And those.wheels are most definitely factory stock. I had exactly the same ones on mine.)

Something to add onto the list of things children do not play with anymore, but were popular with children then, is Paper Dolls. First you have a cut-out picture (the doll) of a model, or a baby, or a girl, and her clothing is plain, or she's just wearing undergarments. The kit would include precut clothes to hang onto the doll's shoulders with paper flaps that folded over. Some kits you could draw or paint clothes for the doll. Later there was a computer game, same idea. Remember in the movie Clueless, when Cher is deciding what clothes to wear? The concept origins was in these paper dolls.

Thank you, Sally Moen, for that memory. I loved playing with paper dolls. They weren’t expensive so we had multiple sets. What about the dolls similar to paper dolls but were made of flat plastic and their clothes used static cling to stick to them.? Edit - later on in this post it showcases Colorforms! That’s what I was referring to.

These looked like more fun than they were. You had to put your own ice cubes in the top and manually turn the handle to shave the ice. It was too much work for too little ice & the circular grater kept getting caught on the square ice cube edges. Then the syrup ran out and there weren't any replacements. Planned obsolescence.

Pretty accurate. Didn't own but have used my friends. And my memory of cranking it is probably because friend had us take turns due to the work of cranking it.

We made these clicks clacks out of straws. Then you got a clothesline pin and a playing card, attached then to the fender's edge so that the card slapped against the bike's spokes. It made a pleasant motor noise. You can achieve similar sound by smooshing a plastic drink bottle into the area between the back wheel and the frame. It rubs against the tire, making a motor noise. To make noise was the idea

I remember these or something very similar. They slid on the spokes so if you were going slow they would fall back and forth as the wheel turned and make a sort of tinkly sound. We were poor so I never had. We did the standard old playing card and clothes pin.

This must be one of the "fancy" models. I have used lots of radios like this but they were all AM only. FM radio in cars existed at least as far back as the 50s but I only know that from the internet because everything I saw in the 60s and even a lot of the 70s was all AM.

This was a dealership in Fort Worth, Texas. The McDavid family had Pontiac dealerships in the DFW area. They ran local TV ads that featured their great dane named "Widetrack".

Bill McDavid's dealership was in downtown Ft Worth, Texas. Pontiac had a feature called the "Wide-Track Wheelbase." His dogs (all Great Danes) were all named "Widetrack." He had commercials that ran in the DFW Metroplex. He'd say something gimmicky like "we've got the biggest selection in Texas. Right, Widetrack?" and Widetrack would bark. At Christmas, his ads featured the jingle-bell song of barking dogs, with video synced to look as if Widetrack was barking the song. These ran for many years. I always thought it was the same dog. I didn't realize until I was an adult that he was naming a series of several dogs "Widetrack." Not only that, I thought Widetrack originally recorded that song. And then I begin to travel the country/world and I heard that song elsewhere. And I thought "...wow Widetrack is famous." I was so naïve.

We had Bell Telephone come out to our school to teach us Telephone Etiquette. How to dial a number (it's not a push button), how many rings must you wait before giving up when you call someone, how to answer a call, how to hang up a call (NEVER slam the receiver down! Remember, you don't OWN the phone, you rent it from Bell). My neighbor had a cool feature: they had a plug-in phone, so you could move the phone around the house to plug into another outlet. All other phones were hard-wired into a wall outlet, so you had to stay near there to talk on the phone.

I was trying to find the washing machines, then I saw these were the agitators, with the ringer at the top. The tubs would be for rinsing clothes in clear water after washing, as those agitators only did one thing. And they didn't spin excess water out of clothes. I don't see dryers in this photo, I'm guessing they didn't have them

Oh Dear LORD - GLASS WAX! We had several sets of stencils cut into very heavy waxed paper, showing Christmas scenes and decorations. Every Christmas, we'd set up a series of small glass dessert bowls, each with a small amount of Glass Wax, with a different color of food coloring mixed in, and we'd all get to work. Using small chunks of dampened sponges, every window and mirror in the house had snowmen, snowflakes, Christmas trees, Santa's sleighs, nativity scenes, you name it, daubed onto them in pastel-colored Glass Wax. And after the holidays, cleanup was just a damp rag or paper towel. A memory of fun and wonder from my childhood, now so long ago that looking back is almost painful.

Yes, at least in the USA it is almost always frozen. But YMMV. In the navy in the 80s it was a novel thing for me to see boxed milk in some of the countries I visited. Now you can get boxed milk in the US as well but at the time I'd only ever seen fresh or powdered except for the canned evaporated/condensed milk usually used for baking.

Yes; the juice company would sterilize the bottles and re-use them. Many companies would refund a few cents (US ¢) to the customer upon return. Kids would roam the neighborhood to find cans/bottles to return and get a little bit of spending money.
