What Veterans Look Like After A Decade Of War In The Middle East In 22 Shocking Pics By David Jay & James Nachtwey
Wars never really end, because even though they may finish on the battlefield, many veterans bring the war back home and are forced to live with them for the rest of their lives.
This sad and sobering truth is highlighted by Photographers like David Jay and James Nachtwey, who have been documenting young and badly wounded American soldiers following their return home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated,” writes Nachtwey, while Jay’s project, compiled into a series called Unknown Soldier, was a finalist in the Portrait category for the Magnum Photography Awards 2016.
Talking about his pictures, Jay wrote that they present “an opportunity to open a dialogue about issues we are not necessarily comfortable with…and also issues that we are responsible for. The images can be uncomfortable for the viewer. It forces us to confront our fears and inhibitions about life, death, sexuality, sickness, relationships, etc. Reality is not always pretty. This is reality. Let’s address it.”

Ya'll are true heroes & I pray your health continues to be positive. we are extremely grateful for your courage & indebted to you forever for all your sacrifices! 😍
What the point of this war? Nobody will win... Except people who sell and produce the war things...
The American economy runs on war and fear, because as you say money is to be made from the sale and manufacturing of wartime items. As for fear, what is more terrifying than the thought that if you stop fighting then "your enemies" will overrun your home and slaughter that which you love? War and Fear is what the American government does best. I'm sure this will get downvoted into oblivion and that's fine. I know the truth is uncomfortable for those who refuse to accept it.
Load More Replies...Bravery doesn't end just because they've left the battlefield. It takes amazing courage to keep going and become more than your injury. Can't imagine the psychological injuries also.
there's no bravery on the battlefield. only corpses. war is the end of man.
Load More Replies...I wonder sometimes why many Americans are so avid about the soldiers and "support our troops" mentality (though not usually voting in favour of help for veterans, but that's another matter) and I think that it might have something to do with the fear of hearing that so many died for what was, essentially, nothing. (I know it's not quite "nothing", but it sure wasn't the justice that the common people wanted.)
Master Markus, why do you feel compelled to negativity when it comes to the American people and their patriotism? I only ask out of curiosity.
Load More Replies...This whole post makes me want to cry. These pictures are great, and they're great to show everyone what war does to humans. Not only does it kill (innocent) people, it also severely injures them. And for what?!
Well, ISIS is a very evil organization that should be stopped, though I will say that they might have happened because of certain US actions
Load More Replies...Good post idea! I know my M East & S Asian colleagues like to discuss their countries before & after internal turmoil, int'l involvement.
Load More Replies...I`d like to see Donald Trump in a battlefield. Maybe he becomes more human.
And Crooked Hillary and Hussein Obama what would they become?
Load More Replies...Injured/destroyed lives. On both sides. Destroyed places. In war zones. For what? For saying "I'm proud we won over them"??? War never brings anything good.
What the hell is wrong with humanity!? There are no winners in war. Why won't we learn!
Ahh let me guess! Most people are dumb and still believe in god why would war be any different!
Load More Replies...This is sad to see, no, just because their wounds, but because no even after all the years of suffering from victimes like these could stop the human hearts from continue in war and unfortunately it will continue taking more lives, destroying families and smiles.
On war there is no music and nice black&white photos of veterans. Don't believe the great image of war. USA has got the best marketing strategy for selling us the idea of war - nice pin-up girls, movies with stupid american pathos that makes their movies almost the same and The uncle ben who needs you. I wonder why sons of american politicians don't go on wars.
The USA hasn't won a war in almost 75 years. A lot of blood and treasure lost. If you have an interest in politics, it would be wise to remember that the first rule in politics is "Never start a war in Afghanistan"
Well said...have you read Robert Fisk's " The Great War For Civilisation ' ??
Load More Replies...And not a single one of the great politicians suffers any of this. They sign a paper to but new weapons and send you to fight. F**k the pride, f**k the flags, f**k the "great again". Wake up, people. You are not an heroe if you lose your limbs for the country: you are an idiot because you were not smart enough to understand their game. Vietnam taught you nothing. You are not fighting for democracy and freedom, but for oil and stock options. F**k the war and stop volunteering to fight.
Absolutely True!...........Arundatti Roy, the wonderful Indian writer said about patriotism and flags..... " Flags are bits of coloured cloth that are first used to shrink wrap your brain and then to drape over the box they send your body home in." Americans are so ignorant about their history of international murder and mayhem through endless wars, that it makes you want to weep.
Load More Replies...Thank you to the artists and the subjects for sharing this important project. In the modern world, we pride ourselves on knowledge share and the availability of information. Yet, we remain gloriously undisturbed and personally un-impacted by modern warfare, unlike times past. Projects like this force us to confront the effects of war to which we would not otherwise be exposed.
7th grade history teacher: there are no winners in war, just the side with lower body counts.
You've gotta be an idiot to go to a war, especially when the entire world was pointing out that the war was for oil and geopolitical advantage. Millions of innocent civilians (women, children, elderly) died because of the war in which these soldiers took part in. Being a patriot is the sheepest idea of all. A lot of people are patriots of their countries. Just think of it, if you were born in a totally different country you would be a patriot of that country. It's like all these stupid football, basketball fans. Recently, Warriors won the basketball finals and all Californians were happy and patriotic of their team. But if they were born or living in Cleveland they would be cheering for that team.
All the traitors and muslims are in this comment page. You should all be executed.
Stick your head back up your bum-hole where it belongs.

Stunning photo session. Huge respect for all the War Veterans out there - thank you for serving. You should never be forgotten or unappreciated.
their appearance just depicted the status of their heart and morals
These photos sadden me - these men and women, not to mention the people in places of war suffer so much. In the end i don't think these conflicts do much good, but the suffering keeps going on. We hear stories all the time in Canada about how veterans are left to fend for themselves with PTSD after coming back from...politicians can give them medals, money and whatever but what they lost can never be bought back.
Nachtwey states that these events must not be repeated. And how the hell does he expect that to happen? Human beings are geared to rip, main, and destroy. The holocausts of the American Civil War and the two world wars with all the carnage and inhumane acts of escalating violence did nothing to stop the continuing violence and carnage we see every day. As a 20-year veteran myself, I salute these men and women who gave up their lives, their bodies, their futures to preserve the United States and its dreams, which are being torn asunder by so-called progressives that are trying to lead our nation into anarchy and tyranny.
If you need to talk, call Vet Crisis 1-800-273-8255 or text #838255 or www.VeteransCrisisLine.net.
The courage and unfathomable ability to survive and even flourish is miraculous. But I continue to ask why people continue to serve in unnecessary wars... I am not 100% pacifist, but I think that each war needs to be judged on its own merits - not what politicians tell us. This requires knowing about the specifics of the situation and thinking for oneself. As an Army veteran I am grateful for the health care I receive from the VA. There, I often engage with other vets about our service and most question the "rightness" of their service in wars like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. That said, my heart - and mind - are touched by the people in these photos - and the many others we don't see.
This is just the physical appearances of some of our men and women the rest are worse inside God bless all of them
These war heroes were prepared for victory. The damage that they sustained took them a while to accept, get used to and put behind them so they could move on. The public will need time as well. We don't anticipate such damage and the first response is to recoil. Then we feel the guilt of turning from another human being. It is sad but true that after the horrible pain of finally accepting their ravaged bodies these heroes now have to be patient with the rest of us. Let's let compassion speed our way to acceptance so they can move on with our support, they did it all for us after all.
Seeing the current state of your US veterans widened my horizon with regard to the true & real sacrifices these war vets had underwent in the name of PEACE & CONCERN OF HUMANITY.. I, for one, Salute them ALL..!🇺🇸
Granted they knew what could happen and their scars are lifelong. An equal huzzah needs to go out to those trauma and healthcare individuals that allowed them to continue to live.
So, this is what happens. The midde-east had been there, and because of religious reasons, the west attacked. This war is endless. There may be an end, but some people wont give up.
I am saddened by these images. I think it is good of BoredPanda to feature these men and women so society can learn that warriors are dying and suffering for the greater good of mankind, or is it for the greater good of major corporations who profit from wars. Now, can you also feature 20 of the soldiers from the other side? They must also be in bad shape. BoredPanda wouldn't be bias would it to only feature one side of the wars.
The poor souls, I ache for them. But what was the point? Those damn wars did nothing. "Not worth it" as a WWI soldier once said.
Looking at these scars and injuries, all I can say it's that this is absolutely nothing compare to the real scars they are caring . . . trauma. War . . . I'll never understand it . . . never or anything that has to do with killing
this should have happened to Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld et al. I wish I could have the superpower to take these horrible things away from these soldiers and whip them on those lying a******s who sent them there, and then on ISIS and all their ilk, including Saudi Arabian men!
True Heros. May we never forget them, forsake them, and be able to forgive those whose actions turn humanity into victims of greed and hate.
I think we owe these men and women so much. If you stop to think they were in excellent physical condition to get into the service and their injuries are life changing. We owe them every convenience they need.
And here I was complaining about traffic. This is the ultimate sacrifice. True heroes
May God provide these heroes with everything they need. This war has taken too much. 💔 Thank you all in service for my freedom.
OMGosh this series is at best heart breaking. War is HELL. We can never thank these men enough for what they sacrificed for America.. God bless them!
MY HEART GOES OUT TO THESE WOMEN AND MEN FOR SURE. BUT GOING TO WAR IS GOING TO CAUSE THESE KINDS OF INJURIES. I think our young people think they are Capt America and nothing is going to hurt them, THEY ARE WRONG. I want all our people to be sent home to USA, this is not our war, now our problem. Being there is not stopping terrorists at all, it is one big waste of flesh and life!!! FOR WHAT???? NOTHING that matters here really.
Nothing any of us can say will be enough. Old men start wars, young men (and women) pay the price. I hate the results, but I deeply respect those who put their lives on the line. Our military members, past, present and future deserve our eternal thanks and gratitude. I'm not sure I would have the courage to just keep living after such devastating injuries. I guess that when you don't have a choice, you have to make the best of it. Best of luck and many blessings on those who have given so much.
At least some of them are lucky to be still alive to tell those tales to their children. Imagine the number of lives lost during the war in middle east. Most of them were Children, women and other civilians. And the fact is most of them were Muslims whom you Americans call terrorists. Unfortunately if you guys are to comment on a picture of anyone from them, you'd all say they deserve it..
It's true that this war is highly questionable, but that has nothing to do with the courage and selflessness of these men and women. You could live a lifetime and not find more honorable Americans. The real outrage is the lack of support and care these soldiers have experienced. Debate the war on another page; leave this one as a testament to their heroism and our respect.
It's very unfortunate and I feel for these heros thanks for your sacrifice friends ! I believe everyone deserves a fair go!
