One of the biggest problems with being vegan or vegetarian seems to be that a lot of people don’t even understand what you do want to eat. This Twitter user named Yazmin recently went to a restaurant for her 18th birthday and was given a single banana slice with a candle on it – a video taken at the table shows her and her family giggling and looking awkwardly at the unusual plate as it’s presented to her.
In response to her thread, vegans shared the most disappointing things they’ve had restaurants try to pass off to them as dessert. Most of them involve fruit and not much else. I mean, fruit is great, but it’s not what we have in mind when we think of an indulgent birthday treat.

so a lot of people don’t believe that the banana thing actually happened so here’s a video from my mom :) pic.twitter.com/M0yYFrFK6a

But her adventures in navigating popular restaurants as a vegan were only beginning

In response to her viral tweet, the restaurant chain where she had received the now-infamous banana slice sent her some vegan cupcakes and promised to follow up with vegan cheese and chocolate. Sweet gesture, but it kind of makes you wonder why the location where she went for her birthday didn’t do that in the first place!
Here’s the birthday box she received from the restaurant

Honestly, vegan options should be the lowest bar for having an interesting and varied menu, not a novelty or something you have to go somewhere special to get. People choose not to eat animal products for all sorts of reasons, and most people have somebody in their group of friends who’s vegan or vegetarian even if they’re not themselves. At this point, appealing to people who want vegan products isn’t just polite, it’s common sense for business.
What do vegans actually want for dessert? One commenter responded to the thread with a picture of some vegan cupcakes with enviable glaze and toppings from a local deli, proving that vegan baked goods are becoming more mainstream and leaving out the dairy products doesn’t mean leaving out the fun.
While there was a time when vegan “ice cream” just meant slushy sorbets, the non-dairy ice cream market has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. The most popular plant base for ice cream is coconut milk, due to its sweet flavor and creamy texture, but the options just keep expanding, and popular brands like Ben and Jerry’s keep coming out with extravagant flavors to catch up to their range of dairy ice cream. Also good news if you’re lactose intolerant!
Other vegans responded to the thread with the saddest desserts they’ve encountered

'Has very particular dietary wishes'. 'Doesn't check menu before going'. 'Is surprised restaurants can't accommodate'. Also, saying most people have someone in their group of friends who's vegan or vegetarian is untrue. In the US 2% are vegetarian and 0,5% are vegan. Seeing as this is strictly about vegans (plenty of options in restaurants for vegetarians), that means most people have friend groups of 200 people? Nah. But a tip for next time; check the menu before going! Or let them know you're coming and ask if they can make you something specific.
First of all, check the menu first. Second of all, call in advance and ask if they can get you something off the menu. Third, as I understand all the above vegans expected to get FREE vegan pudding "because it's my birthday"... Well, if you're asking for something special, don't expect that the chef will happily drop everything to make you a vegan cupcake... And if he does, have a decency to pay for it (or your friends should pay, it's your bday after all). And yes, sometimes even fruit salad might be a problem if it isn't on the menu - you just don't have fruits in stock.
Load More Replies...So, why do these people not check the menu before celebrating their birthdays at a specific location and then complain about said location to not meet their needs? It's not the restaurants' fault that they were uninformed. If I'm having, say, celiac disease, I'd choose the restaurant by their gluten-free menu, maybe even call them and ask about possibilities for my needs. Why can't vegans do that, too? I'm calling either attention wh*ring or them being too entitled to think their stuff through here.
I am vegetarian who eats vegan whenever possible and as someone who eats out more than I should I have never had a problem finding amazing vegan desserts. In many cases restaurants will offer to adapt whatever dessert is on their menu. This whole post seems pretty unbelievable.
While I am pleased to see more restaurants and bakeries catering to a wide range of dietary restrictions and allergies, I still cannot stress enough how important it is to call a restaurant in advance or review their menu if you have any specific dietary needs. You cannot expect for every restaurant to cater to your needs or magically whip up a vegan dessert or meal out of thin air. It puts a lot of pressure on the wait staff and the chef. If you call in advance, many restaurants are happy to discuss dietary needs and restrictions and will let you know whether they can accommodate you.
It is also important to emphasise that restaurants are not obliged to cater for any "special needs", be it gluten-free food, vegan, etc. Every restaurant prepares the food they want. Why don't people check beforehand?

I sadly have little to no use or sympathy for vegans or vegetarians; - and even less for those that do harm their pets by trying to get them on the same diets, just so wrong - - it's a fad, and not one that is 'picking up momentum' as so many love to claim - they deserve the 'hell' they have created for themselves - they are usually the stick-up-the-a*s customers that specifically go to a great restaurant that CLEARLY state 'NO Substitutes' at the door, on the menu and are also told by their servers, but yet decide not to heed those words when ordering - cause calamity in every kitchen, slowing everyone elses's order - wonder why the chefs never come to their tables - and generally make everyone feel awkward ... or worse, wish they just hadn't gone out in the first place - and most are real sh*tty tippers to add isult to injury ... and no I have no vegan friends nor friends with vegan freinds - TFG *rant over, whew*
You know, I wish they would all just tell us they are VEGAN! from the get go, so we can plan ahead and cook extra green beans! Wear a Tshirt, or something. I mean, how are we supposed to know they're VEGAN! when they insist on hiding it? They should just say, "Hi, my name is Rainbow Unicorn Woke-Person, and I'm a VEGAN!" But, sadly, that never happens. (This is sarcasm, by the way.)
Family holiday dinner. Surprised two attendees are now vegan. Several vegetarians. Vegans only ate the loaf they brought and sweet potato dish. Slim pickings.
As a vegan, I wouldn't go to a non-specialist restaurant and expect them to have food to accommodate my specific dietary requirements. The fact that such restaurants are willing to do anything at all is nice (although a whole banana would have been nicer!). I never had a problem as a vegan, because I researched what worked for me when I went out, and didn't embarrass or shame restaurant staff by requiring things they couldn't possibly provide.
So easy to make a vegan cake. Just add a can of canned “pumpkin” purée, to a cake mix, and leave out the eggs and oil. Tried it with a chocolate cake mix and couldn't tell there was pumpkin in it at all. Plus, the cake will now have fiber, too!
I don't get it. You look at the menu and order something. If you ordered a single slice of banana, that's what you're going to get. If you didn't order it, then I doubt they gave it to you. It's not as if you walk in and say, "It's my birthday, please bring me a surprise dessert, but keep in mind that I'm vegan." You CHOOSE what they bring you. I think these people ASKED for this, and then posted it to get likes. Holy cow. What is this thread?! It makes no sense.
It's pretty obvious. Either a fake post or faked by vegans to get attention.
Load More Replies...If you choose to limit your dietary choices in this way, great. Knock yourself out. The rest of the world doesn't do that...and is under NO obligation to cater just to you. (the reply for Maria.. and now also for Kjorn continues) .....Animal milk protein, called "casein" is very dissimilar from human protein and causes (together with animal protein in meat and eggs) heart diseases, diabetes, various cancers - especially breast cancer, allergic/inflammatory reactions such as chronic runny nose, recurrent ear and bronchial infections, asthmatic bronchitis, and other chronic, painful inflammations such as arthritis (inflammation of joints, rheumatism (inflammation of muscles), eczema (inflammation of skin), colitis (inflammation of bowels) etc. So, I'm sure that Kjorn, or any other "village wiseman", like Martin Donovan) won't be glad and will not enjoy their old age. VVegans/vegetarians are in for a hard time if they think a plant based diet is “ethical”. It has been shown that plants have an instant chemical reaction when cut or chewed – that green smell after mowing the lawn is their version of a scream. It has been shown that plants recognize and take care of their own offspring and cousins. It has been shown that when attacked, plants fight back. I’m not making this up. Plants Can Hear Themselves Being Eaten, And They Don't Like It https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a11550/plants-can-hear-themselves-being-eaten-and-they-dont-like-it-17337795/ Plants Recognize Rivals and Fight, Play Nice with Siblings https://www.livescience.com/5793-plants-recognize-rivals-fight-play-nice-siblings.html Plants can actually take care of their offspring – here’s how https://theconversation.com/plants-can-actually-take-care-of-their-offspring-heres-how-33048
I'm not sure why you're being downvoted when you are absolutely correct. Plants communicate with chemicals, not sound, and are very aware when they're being eaten.

If you want a cake to be served on your birthday at a restaurant....BRING YOUR OWN. Most restaurants will, for a fee, cut and serve a cake that you've brought in before your reservation.
Load More Replies...Ha. Stop being a vegan then. Or eat a place that's for vegans. I'm sure they could make you a nice slice of carrot or something.
.....now, that's insensitive to say the least; not helping our endangered planet, not helping suffering animals, not helping to human health, AndersM.

That just means it's certified Kosher under the Orthodox Union Dairy requirements; not that it contains dairy; I know as I have worked at a Kosher food processing plant.
