Vegan Influencer Gets Caught Eating Fish, Starts Making Excuses, But Her 1.3M Followers Aren’t Buying It
A popular social media influencer has been caught lying to the world. She was caught cheating eating fish while selling her vegan diet plans and claiming they really worked. In response to the outrage, she released an apology video, but it made things even worse. After watching it, people are saying either she’s delusional, or she still thinks she can make all of this mess disappear. And they might have a point. Throughout the 33-minute video titled “This is what is happening,” Yovana Mendoza Ayres tries to explain why she was keeping all of her health issues (and eating fish and eggs) a secret. And only makes things worse as she reveals the terrible side effects her vegan lifestyle brought onto her.

Yovana adopted a raw vegan diet six years ago. A year inside her journey, she decided to do a 25-day water fasting. Yes, she only drank water for 25 days. She said in the video how amazing she felt afterward but confessed she lost her period as well. Talking to “other people in the movement” and not health professionals, she began to think it was a good thing. It was not until after two years of not having her period did Yovana start to look into the side-effect, only then she realized it wasn’t healthy.
This is the video that got Yovana in trouble

After going to the doctors to get tested, she learned that “her hormones were out of whack.” According to her, she was diagnosed as pre-menopausal. She thought it was weird because she felt good. So it took Yovana a little bit to understand the seriousness behind her condition. The Instagram influencer began to change her diet, increasing its fat levels, adding salt. On top of that, she started eating cooked food.

Within two months, Yovana got her period back, but it was very irregular. But she said she thought her body had to take time to heal, so she was patient with it. After about a year, she stopped getting her period again. This time, she hadn’t had her period for about five months before getting rechecked. By this point, it was 2017, and her hormones were still not good, and she wasn’t ovulating. “I was basically anemic,” Yovana said.

The doctors recommended taking testosterone and thyroid pills. Yovana also admitted that ever since she started seeing the doctors, they were telling her that she needed to eat eggs. But she refused. She thought she “could do it with a plant-based diet.” She said she always knew the doctors were going to recommend that every time she went to see them, but she wasn’t paying attention to it.
“So the doctors were like ‘You need to gain more weight, you need to take the testosterone, the thyroid medicine, and these supplements, and also it would really benefit you if you ate some eggs.'” Yovana’s response? “No, no, no … I’m gonna seek out some different information and talk to someone who actually understands my veganism.”

Those other people that she talked to advised her to take iron supplements and up her protein and fat intake. So she did. Things are finally looking better for Yovana, she gained 6 pounds and got her period back. “This time it came back good,” she said. It was in April 2018.
She said that around that time she was beginning to feel a little more tired. “I would film a video, and I would get exhausted after that.” Her workouts took a lot more effort, too. But Yovana didn’t pay much attention to that, thinking the fatigue was related to traveling. Fast forward to July, and she’s getting painful cuts on her vagina. The doctors diagnosed her with Candidal Vaginitis.
After dealing with it through a specific diet, Yovana started getting digestive issues. “I was getting very, very bloated from basically everything that I ate. I was feeling constipated. I was getting diarrhea. I was having a lot of gasses, a lot of burbs.” But she claims it was on a low level, much milder than what it eventually got to be.

The doctor diagnosed the influencer with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This bacterial overgrowth can happen either when bacteria from one part of the digestive tract travels to the small intestine or when naturally occurring bacteria in the small intestine multiply too much. “I paid attention to it, obviously I was treating it,” Yovana said. “But I tried not to put too much energy to it.” At this point, Yovana was doing juice and other cleanses to reset her digestive systems (which she came up with herself). After trying a lot of different things, she thought the best move was to eat a balanced diet.
To make sure of what her condition was, Yovana had to do a SIBO test. Waiting for the results, she felt desperate. At this point, she was open to the possibility of adding some animal products to her diet. The test came back positive. Yovana started to think about the future. “I thought about the fact that I was a woman and I want to bring a baby into this world … if I’m not good how can I expect to bring a child into this world? Yovana thought about her options and decided to start consuming animal products.

Now comes the most important part. She kept all of this a secret. From the whole word. While continuing to sell her diet plans. In fact, she still does. If you go to her website, you can find “challenges” and “plans” that include vegan meals for up to $99. “I wasn’t considering all of the options and for me, it was now an option, I was seeing it as an option. And that’s exactly why I haven’t shared it with you because for me it’s still an experiment, for me it’s still a process, I’m still figuring it out. I’m not gonna sit in front of the camera and tell you like, ‘Oh, I’ve been eating eggs and fish for the past two months and everything is better and everything is good, and the plant-based diet doesn’t work.’ No. I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying that I’m trying to figure it out.”
Yeah. Basically, she continues preaching that people should still follow and, most importantly, buy her lifestyle. Even after all of this, after it caused her body to fail her, Yovana is still selling it. This is some next level post-influencer era we’re living in.
And this is her apology
She aired her confession only after a video of her eating fish was leaked. “My hope is to go back and eat the way that I love to eat,” Yovana concludes. “I am grateful for this opportunity to improve my health, I’m grateful for taking the route of self-love and I feel that I’m doing this out of self-love, because I want to be better, I want to be healthy and because if I’m not healthy then I have nothing to give to this world.” So there you have it, folks. She’s eating meat products because she developed an unhealthy lifestyle which she is abandoning for self-love, but hey, you can still buy it. And this doesn’t mean that all the vegans are evil and self-harming individuals. It’s just proof that you can’t trust any “influencer” no matter how many millions are following them because you might end up developing something far worse than the flu.

I fail to understand how any rational human being can be influenced by one of these "influencers"! I would have thought everyone realises by now that these people are being paid to pretend to like/use/swear by/you name it, some Company's tat. Unfortunately there must be many thousands, if not millions, of gullible, ignorant people out there, because these leeches still seem to be thriving.
I so agree with you! These "influences" are right up there with the Nigerian Prince that will promise millions if you only send ... Sad that people choose to believe in these things/people.
Please don't forget about the Nigerian astronaut stranded in space, let's try to get him home.
I would rather believe in Nigerian Prince than veganism
Sorry, my comment appeared twice. I don't know why, and I can't delete it
"Influencer"... I don't pay any attention to anything anywhere near this realm of what's going on the world. But of all the social media bullshit, this one seems to be one of the bullshittiest. I doubt there is a single honest person among them.
Change that into BILLIONS of completely ignorant, naive, gullible moronic idiots. Like Stephen Hawking (R.I.P.) already mentioned: best to aim for the stars & just leave!
I think the worrying thing is that target audiences are usually the younger, impressionable kids who have not enough life experiences to know that it is all bullshit. If they haven't learnt it, they won't know- doesn't make them gullible idiots.
@bumble, especially them..... As governments & regulations always tend to only act when the damage already has been done. All these kids (& ignorant adults) will slowly become 1 giant "instant gratification-zombie-mob" who have no critical thinking skills & actually take the BS (some or most) of these influencers as being truthful. The 1 thing which worries me the most is the tsunami of future addicts & the giant increase of people who will suffer from depression-issues (we already see this happening in some countries....). But hey enough doom&gloom, it is good weather here, enjoy your day! :-)
The influencer profits off an existing eating disorder.
these days, everyone is a follower. nobody thinks for themselves.
These "influencers" are ridiculous anyway. I wouldn't assume she WAS lying but I wouldn't be shocked to find out she was.
The key word is "rational". Most humans are not rational, because it takes an effort they are not ready to make. It's better to sit down and absorb whatever an influencer/guru/politician tells you.
Knowing it's fake, or just a carefully created phantasy, does not mean you can't still yearn for it. I have a friend who told me he gets depressed when he sees all his friends live happy lives on instagram - knows it's just a show or best-of pics but still can't shake the feeling his life sucks. And he's in his 40s :)
Agree 👍
I was going to type a comment, then saw yours and decided DITTO.
Not to worry, influencer marketing is in its death throes because of shit like this article. People are finally starting to wise up, they're realising influencers are all full of shit.
I wish it were so, but unfortunately it isn't. There is simply too much money to be made & also simply too much costs to be saved (influencer marketing is much more costs effective then the traditional way of advertising & because of current tech, it can be far more effective in ways of "direct contact" with the targeted audience thus yielding a higher stream of revenue). Also this market is still not being fully regulated in many countries & this is also the reason why it is currently interesting to use this.
The operative word in your question, I believe, is rational. I don't think many reasoning and intelligent people are "influenced" by these people. Though many may follow them to gleen tips or tricks to some goal.
Everything she says is a Lie, theres no such thing as Detoxing your body! Its called a Liver
and Kidneys!
There's also the express lane through vomiting and diarrhea. Everyone needs a hobby!
Gastroenteritis is great for dropping 4lb in 2 days. They should sell it as a weight loss aid. Downside is - you have to spend 4 hours in A&E being rehydrated, given anti-emetics, then discharged 10 miles from home at 2.30am with no phone and no money. Plus side - it was free
@diane... that sounds awful. And it sounds like you had to go through that, for which I'm sorry. I'm also pretty sure that was the strategy used by boxers to get into the desired weight class. (that or loading up on salt and hydration to go up a weight class.)
The word detox means to rid your body or drugs or alcohol during addiction, there is no other medical use for the word 'detox', i agree this is dangerous and misleading crap.
You don't think that a poor lifestyle will result in toxic overload on your kidneys and liver? Think again. Ask any alcoholic how great their health is. After all, alcohol fits the very scientific definition of a toxin. Seems to me that if the liver and kidneys could handle whatever we throw at them, we'd never get sick or diseased. So, clearly there ARE limits on what our bodies can process. De-toxing, while an obnoxious term, is about stopping the influx of harmful substances onto our bodies that overload our body's ability to process them, and replacing them with things that help our bodies eliminate--things like raw fruits and vegetables that contain fiber, vitamin and minerals that support our organs of elimination. Things like trans fats, excessive sodium, alcohol, cigarette smoke, lead paint chips--whatever--they all take a toll on our health and overload our organs of elimination. Your liver is not infallible, nor are your lungs, your colon or your kidneys.
No. Detox is a dangerous myth,
You actually can detox your body in about a month - without stupid fads. Just by cutting out alcohol, smoking, fast foods, and eat more fresh and nutritious food. I was in hospital for 5 weeks a year ago, lived on mainly, soup, toast, medical grade food supplement shakes and an occasional small meal (the food was good). I felt 500% healthier on discharge- and had lost 8lb. OK - I had Hepetitis E and my liver was compromised - was on a drip for 3 weeks.
Your body is self cleaning.
You don't need a chance. Your body is cleaning itself all the time. Otherwise you will die soon. You only suggest to not consum any adittional problems.
Alcohol is also a drug. But yeah, in english detox has also a wise meaning.
Detox is for drugs and alcohol addictions, that's it.
@Messy - Given a chance it will - you cant force it by denying your body the other nutrients you need. Drink nothing but water for a month and you will flush things out of your system - the good as much as the bad. You will dilute and flush out your stored nutrients along with toxins and many other things. A month ingesting natural foods & keeping to a balanced diet will make anyone feel better. By balanced normal foods I do not mean fish-finger sandwiches, with mushy peas, more than once a day.
Detox is also very bad. It can have serious abdominal effects as well.

Actually you can use NAC and Milk Thistle to detoxify
You don't need to detoxify, you have a liver and kidneys for that! Of course, if you want to help them, stop smoking, drinking (alcohol) and eating fast food/processed food.
There is no way a 1200 calorie RAW vegan diet can sustain good health in the long term. I'm not a vegan but know a fair bit about nutrition from a previous job. It is excluding so many healthy vegan foods which require cooking to be digestible. Cereals, whole grains pulses some vegetables, to name but a few. Even many vegetables which CAN be eaten raw, provide more of their nutrients and beneficial properties when cooked. She is basically suffering similar symptoms of malnutrition as experienced by Anorexics but without dropping such extreme amounts of weight. 1200 calories a day needs to be highly nutritious if adopted for extended periods/years, even though the body will adapt by slowing down it's metabolism and prevent further weight loss. The excuse that "before fire our ancestors didn't cook" is no argument at all - they ate raw meat and fish and didn't lead particularly long lives.
"Raw" diets are unnatural Humans actually evolved BECAUSE they had fire and cooked food, and thus could eat dead meat and save it for later. Early humanoid species used fire. Humans didn't "discover" it.
Isnt all meat dead?
Agreed. Tbh, I honestly wouldn't mind people were minimising the amount of raw food or meat they were eating, but they need to consider that they do need protein and stuff, and eat accordingly, cuz if they don't get enough, they will get health problems. No one can completely confirm that being a vegan will lead to inevitable death, but most people probably wouldn't be able to deal with it for a long period of time, and they do need balance in their meals.
Death is inevitable. Sooner or later. Whether you are a vegan or not.

That is untrue. Veganism is a healthy lifestyle for those who do it properly. There are more sources for protein than dead animal flesh, and vegans eat those. Pulses, legumes, nuts, and seeds are filled with protein. We also don't need as much protein as we think we do. Stop spreading misinformation. Do your research.
@ Hayley - pre-fire they just killed what they could - flint spears etc. And fished what they could catch - and obviously ate both raw. The best and fittest survived. They they didn't know that hot burned meat was better better than raw or that you could make inedible grains edible until they invented fire. Our cavemen ancestors did not cook food until they got the hang of fire.
They didn't invent fire. They discovered how to create, feed and use it.
Hayley - sorry - need to ask - how do you envision the cavemen cooking before they invented fire?

Although I agree with you about the nutritional density of food in a 1200 calorie diet, I have to explain that not only did our ancestors not cook, they ate very little meat. And what they did eat of meat was usually scavenged off other predator kills..like lions and hyenas. It was not logical for early primates to organize hunts when other foods were readily available like nuts, fruits and leafy greens. Early primates also got a steady flow of protein from bugs like termites and ants. When people spout that they want to eat meat centric dishes because that's how caveman ate a long time ago..I start laughing.
You actually don’t know that for a fact. NO ONE does. Given that every single prehistoric site ever has clear signs of fire and everything we know about their daily lives comes from going through their garbage piles that are full of bones, I can say that you’re talking through your hat.
Uhhh our ancestors probably DID cook. That's how our brain were able to develop further than our other primate cousins. Cooking food is basically like a pre-digestion, it saves energy on digesting food which means those resources can be spent elsewhere, i.e the brain. Also remember we can only get effective quantities of B12 from animal products. So that means our ancestors did eat meat, although you did mention that.
@Carol: There is no such thing as cavemen. Hunter-gatherers are our "ancestors" and they all definitely ate meat to the best of our knowledge, and this isn't just pure guesswork. The fact that we need meat to be healthy (barring special diets only wealth and/or our current society allows for), just proves they ate meat. The exact proportion that each society ate varies. Usually it was the women and children who fished.
True - they would eat anything and everything they could find or catch for protein. Even chimps eat meat when they can catch it - but gorillas are mainly herbivores - eating up to 40lb of vegetation per day.
