Vegan Influencer Gets Caught Eating Fish, Starts Making Excuses, But Her 1.3M Followers Aren’t Buying It
A popular social media influencer has been caught lying to the world. She was caught cheating eating fish while selling her vegan diet plans and claiming they really worked. In response to the outrage, she released an apology video, but it made things even worse. After watching it, people are saying either she’s delusional, or she still thinks she can make all of this mess disappear. And they might have a point. Throughout the 33-minute video titled “This is what is happening,” Yovana Mendoza Ayres tries to explain why she was keeping all of her health issues (and eating fish and eggs) a secret. And only makes things worse as she reveals the terrible side effects her vegan lifestyle brought onto her.

Yovana adopted a raw vegan diet six years ago. A year inside her journey, she decided to do a 25-day water fasting. Yes, she only drank water for 25 days. She said in the video how amazing she felt afterward but confessed she lost her period as well. Talking to “other people in the movement” and not health professionals, she began to think it was a good thing. It was not until after two years of not having her period did Yovana start to look into the side-effect, only then she realized it wasn’t healthy.

After going to the doctors to get tested, she learned that “her hormones were out of whack.” According to her, she was diagnosed as pre-menopausal. She thought it was weird because she felt good. So it took Yovana a little bit to understand the seriousness behind her condition. The Instagram influencer began to change her diet, increasing its fat levels, adding salt. On top of that, she started eating cooked food.

Within two months, Yovana got her period back, but it was very irregular. But she said she thought her body had to take time to heal, so she was patient with it. After about a year, she stopped getting her period again. This time, she hadn’t had her period for about five months before getting rechecked. By this point, it was 2017, and her hormones were still not good, and she wasn’t ovulating. “I was basically anemic,” Yovana said.

The doctors recommended taking testosterone and thyroid pills. Yovana also admitted that ever since she started seeing the doctors, they were telling her that she needed to eat eggs. But she refused. She thought she “could do it with a plant-based diet.” She said she always knew the doctors were going to recommend that every time she went to see them, but she wasn’t paying attention to it.
“So the doctors were like ‘You need to gain more weight, you need to take the testosterone, the thyroid medicine, and these supplements, and also it would really benefit you if you ate some eggs.'” Yovana’s response? “No, no, no … I’m gonna seek out some different information and talk to someone who actually understands my veganism.”

Those other people that she talked to advised her to take iron supplements and up her protein and fat intake. So she did. Things are finally looking better for Yovana, she gained 6 pounds and got her period back. “This time it came back good,” she said. It was in April 2018.
She said that around that time she was beginning to feel a little more tired. “I would film a video, and I would get exhausted after that.” Her workouts took a lot more effort, too. But Yovana didn’t pay much attention to that, thinking the fatigue was related to traveling. Fast forward to July, and she’s getting painful cuts on her vagina. The doctors diagnosed her with Candidal Vaginitis.
After dealing with it through a specific diet, Yovana started getting digestive issues. “I was getting very, very bloated from basically everything that I ate. I was feeling constipated. I was getting diarrhea. I was having a lot of gasses, a lot of burbs.” But she claims it was on a low level, much milder than what it eventually got to be.

The doctor diagnosed the influencer with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This bacterial overgrowth can happen either when bacteria from one part of the digestive tract travels to the small intestine or when naturally occurring bacteria in the small intestine multiply too much. “I paid attention to it, obviously I was treating it,” Yovana said. “But I tried not to put too much energy to it.” At this point, Yovana was doing juice and other cleanses to reset her digestive systems (which she came up with herself). After trying a lot of different things, she thought the best move was to eat a balanced diet.
To make sure of what her condition was, Yovana had to do a SIBO test. Waiting for the results, she felt desperate. At this point, she was open to the possibility of adding some animal products to her diet. The test came back positive. Yovana started to think about the future. “I thought about the fact that I was a woman and I want to bring a baby into this world … if I’m not good how can I expect to bring a child into this world? Yovana thought about her options and decided to start consuming animal products.

Now comes the most important part. She kept all of this a secret. From the whole word. While continuing to sell her diet plans. In fact, she still does. If you go to her website, you can find “challenges” and “plans” that include vegan meals for up to $99. “I wasn’t considering all of the options and for me, it was now an option, I was seeing it as an option. And that’s exactly why I haven’t shared it with you because for me it’s still an experiment, for me it’s still a process, I’m still figuring it out. I’m not gonna sit in front of the camera and tell you like, ‘Oh, I’ve been eating eggs and fish for the past two months and everything is better and everything is good, and the plant-based diet doesn’t work.’ No. I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying that I’m trying to figure it out.”
Yeah. Basically, she continues preaching that people should still follow and, most importantly, buy her lifestyle. Even after all of this, after it caused her body to fail her, Yovana is still selling it. This is some next level post-influencer era we’re living in.

She aired her confession only after a video of her eating fish was leaked. “My hope is to go back and eat the way that I love to eat,” Yovana concludes. “I am grateful for this opportunity to improve my health, I’m grateful for taking the route of self-love and I feel that I’m doing this out of self-love, because I want to be better, I want to be healthy and because if I’m not healthy then I have nothing to give to this world.” So there you have it, folks. She’s eating meat products because she developed an unhealthy lifestyle which she is abandoning for self-love, but hey, you can still buy it. And this doesn’t mean that all the vegans are evil and self-harming individuals. It’s just proof that you can’t trust any “influencer” no matter how many millions are following them because you might end up developing something far worse than the flu.

I fail to understand how any rational human being can be influenced by one of these "influencers"! I would have thought everyone realises by now that these people are being paid to pretend to like/use/swear by/you name it, some Company's tat. Unfortunately there must be many thousands, if not millions, of gullible, ignorant people out there, because these leeches still seem to be thriving.

There is no way a 1200 calorie RAW vegan diet can sustain good health in the long term. I'm not a vegan but know a fair bit about nutrition from a previous job. It is excluding so many healthy vegan foods which require cooking to be digestible. Cereals, whole grains pulses some vegetables, to name but a few. Even many vegetables which CAN be eaten raw, provide more of their nutrients and beneficial properties when cooked. She is basically suffering similar symptoms of malnutrition as experienced by Anorexics but without dropping such extreme amounts of weight. 1200 calories a day needs to be highly nutritious if adopted for extended periods/years, even though the body will adapt by slowing down it's metabolism and prevent further weight loss. The excuse that "before fire our ancestors didn't cook" is no argument at all - they ate raw meat and fish and didn't lead particularly long lives.
"Raw" diets are unnatural Humans actually evolved BECAUSE they had fire and cooked food, and thus could eat dead meat and save it for later. Early humanoid species used fire. Humans didn't "discover" it.

You can manage with quorn and other protein substitutes. Otherwise there is very little that meets protein requirements and even quorn is heat-treated during manufacture therefore technically "cooked". Humans don't have the same number of stomachs as ruminants, or the digestive systems of rabbits to exist on vegetation alone.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Ally Sheedy (actress) was a vegan before it was all the rage. She was adamant about sticking to it..until she developed an issue similar to this girl. Her doctors told her she had to eat fish at least once a week to fix her medical issues. She said she bawled the whole time she choked down the fish. Sometimes your heart goes one way, but your body doesn't cooperate. That being said..Ally never lied about her medical issue..and she certainly didn't try to hide it to continue selling a program that is obviously dangerous. You can be vegan and be healthy..as long as you don't go off the deep end.

The only healthy part of this woman's diet is fruit and the digestible vegetables and some nuts. She is skipping everything else the body requires to function. Humans are omnivores, we require this type of diet to nourish our bodies. If you become vegan for whatever reason, make sure you are giving your body the fats/proteins/minerals it needs that you are not getting from animal based products.
And do not claim ludicruous health effects on the diet. No diet of whatever form will have these. (To be fair, there are also people who claim that with a diet of meats and nuts you will reach an age of at least 120...oh well.)

Anyway, you can (as an adult) live healthy on a vegan diet (if you supplement vitamine B12), but it takes a lot of knowledge on physiology and nutrition to do this. If you find this combination of veganism, yoga, detox, ayurveda etc. you know this is a "lifestyle" choice, typically manifested by a lack of the required knowledge.
Vegan yes - but not raw vegan. It excludes all the vegan items that require cooking to actually be digestible. You can't just eat a handful of dry brown rice or quinoa - even wholemeal bread is cooked. Some uncooked vegetables will cause intestinal problems and pass through the system without releasing most of their nutrients. A body can handle a long term, vegan, restriced calorie diet if nutritionally concentrated, but not a RAW one, which excludes far too much of what it needs to be healthy.

If you watch animals in the wild, you'll see that they have a raw diet. And after they've eaten, they have to sleep for long periods of time in order for the food to digest. We don't do that any more. So to expect a modern lifestyle to adapt to a completely raw diet is foolish.
That is carnivores who have eaten several days worth of animal protein in one sitting. Protein requires alot of energy to digest. Whether raw meat or cooked meat, the effect is similar. If a human ate 2lb of steak they would begin to feel drowsy in a couple of hours. they would not following 2lb of fruit/vegetable origin - but they would have a dodgy stomach for sure.

Reading this after reading the article on The Onion, I hoped this was also an article from The Onion. Why are people so dumb? If you want to improve your health and improve your diet, talk with someone trained in that area...you know, a doctor, nutritionist, etc. Stop looking for solutions online through dubious websites. "Influencers" are just people who have developed good scamming skills. What qualifications does this woman have to recommend diets to anyone? We'd need more land for farming which would destroy forests and land that was used as ecosystems for animals. They would be forced to move throwing off their ecosystem and eventually starving them. Too much of that is unhealthy I'm not saying go eat a steak. But fish eggs brown rice vegetables you can get your same desired outcome without putting yourself at risk. Nothing against vegans. More power to you.
I also feel obviously (like I m definitely biased but trying to give facts here) that a non-vegan diet has more cons (because for totally evolutionary reasons like, nature didn't design / evolve cow milk for humans but baby cows, humans can't eat raw meat without falling sick, etc., And our closest genetic siblings are chimps who are vegan 97% of the times with 3% of their diet comprising of insects - but no meat) Dairy also has too many hormones and it exacerbates breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and even respiratory diseases (in the last 4 months of turning vegan, I have recovered from sinus headaches, perpetual cold, severe episodes of acute bronchitis, so this I can 100% guarantee). Like dairy is just horrible in every form. Like for us humans. I know someone who reversed vitiligo after turning vegan 5 years back. (Like after giving up dairy) But a well balanced diet (any diet) can be healthy. In this case she just seemed to be doing random experiments.

With a vegan diet, you have to take more care of iodine deficiency than anything else whereas on a non vegan one, the saturated fat and bad cholesterol and chances of blocked arteries is too high.
Every nutrient that you can get from animals including eggs / fish can be had from plants including omega-3 fatty acids (chia seeds, flax seeds, beans, algae supplement, seaweed). Because the animals themselves are getting these nutrients from plants. Then what she did wrong: Ok so first it seems like she had very erratic diet patters (intense 20+ day water fasts, switching between raw diets and cooked food) Also, in the article, she has mentioned multiple times, that she didn't speak to health professionals for the water diet, came up with juice diets herself) So even when you switch from a nonvegetarian / vegetarian diet for about 20 days you will be more gassy / bloated because your body is switching from a diet high in saturated fats to a diet high in fibre.

1) I posted a comment earlier about this topic and I'd like to clear up a few things to the people that say I have no idea what I'm talking about. First, I have a Bachelors of Science in Anthropology. One of my research papers had to do with the reproductive cycles of women in Hunting-Gathering societies compared to Western diets. Regularly monthly ovulations are not normal. Most hunting-gathering women don't even start puberty until they reach around 16 years of age compared to 9-11 years old in Western society and they usually only ovulate once or twice a year. The reason..Western women's diets are heavy in protein. Chimpanzees have similar biology in that the females do not ovulate when they eat a low protein diet or when they are nursing. But males will kill small animals and feed the meat to the females to put them in estrous so they will be ready to mate. Modern Hunter Gatherers had the same results.
2) The women in Hunting Gathering groups rarely ate meat because it took so much time and energy to track and kill animals. Not much payoff of calories when other sources were available. Hunting was usually undertaken for the simple reason of supplementing a food shortage. But when the men successfully brought back meat, everyone ate it. Researchers found that shortly after eating meat, the women would ovulate and have a better chance of getting pregnant. So it's not assumption...it's fact.

I often ask myself why I never met a vegan eating anything vegan having any problems because of that - and then I sometimes come across entitled brats, doing a number of bullshittery-diet-restrictions, put vegan on top of it and a bunch of equally dumb meat-apologists jump by and teach the world about how deadly a vegan diet is. Which it isn't. She started the vegan thing, and eventually her overall diet started back negative health impacts. Then she started investigating why, and ways to fix it. At first she didn’t know what was causing it, and it seems she was and still is trying to figure it out. All the while, her livelihood & income is based on this lifestyle. Honestly, I can see and understand how this played out. Put yourself in her shoes, when do you share the truth? Do u share it before you know for sure, knowing it’d affect your income? Yes, it's awful that some extremist vegans try to force a vegan diet on their pets that strictly need meat to survive, but as you said humans are omnivores, we can survive on meat or on a plant based diet. As long as you are aware of how much and what you have to eat you can very well stay healthy on a vegan diet. This is what happened here, she tried to eat raw vegan food, and only 1200 calories a day, and if you eat vegan food you need to set more protein rich food than you would if you ate meat because there is not an as high concentration of protein. It's a shame stories as this one makes it look like a plant based diet is the problem.

It is NOT a natural diet for a human being. Did you know most vegans lose their B12 within a few years, we can store it in our bodies but once depleted it makes us tired and ill. I personally happen to know plenty of long time vegans with normal health (not trying to discredit your experience at all, just saying I have a different experience). I also know vegans that quit because of health issues, when I ask them about their diet it usually turns out they did not follow vegan food recommendations at all and had a very poorly designed diet. Vegan diets can be healthy and safe, but you definitely need to follow recommendations. I agree with you, vegans will eventually run out of B12 if they don't supplement it, either through supplements or fortified food (food to which it has been added, like certain vegan burgers/sausages, soy milk etc.) Any vegan that says they don't need B12 is an absolute idiot who's eventually gonna screw up their health. Getting enough selenium as a vegan is not actually that hard.

There is no way a 1200 calorie RAW vegan diet can sustain good health in the long term. I'm not a vegan but know a fair bit about nutrition from a previous job. It is excluding so many healthy vegan foods which require cooking to be digestible. Cereals, whole grains pulses some vegetables, to name but a few. Even many vegetables which CAN be eaten raw, provide more of their nutrients and beneficial properties when cooked. She is basically suffering similar symptoms of malnutrition as experienced by Anorexics but without dropping such extreme amounts of weight. 1200 calories a day needs to be highly nutritious if adopted for extended periods/years, even though the body will adapt by slowing down it's metabolism and prevent further weight loss. The excuse that "before fire our ancestors didn't cook" is no argument at all - they ate raw meat and fish and didn't lead particularly long lives.

You can manage with quorn and other protein substitutes. Otherwise there is very little that meets protein requirements and even quorn is heat-treated during manufacture therefore technically "cooked". Humans don't have the same number of stomachs as ruminants, or the digestive systems of rabbits to exist on vegetation alone.

Her doctors told her she had to eat fish at least once a week to fix her medical issues. She said she bawled the whole time she choked down the fish. Sometimes your heart goes one way, but your body doesn't cooperate. That being said..Ally never lied about her medical issue..and she certainly didn't try to hide it to continue selling a program that is obviously dangerous. Humans are omnivores, we require this type of diet to nourish our bodies. If you become vegan for whatever reason, make sure you are giving your body the fats/proteins/minerals it needs that you are not getting from animal based products.

Anyway, you can (as an adult) live healthy on a vegan diet (if you supplement vitamine B12), but it takes a lot of knowledge on physiology and nutrition to do this. If you find this combination of veganism, yoga, detox, ayurveda etc. you know this is a "lifestyle" choice, typically manifested by a lack of the required knowledge.
Vegan yes - but not raw vegan. It excludes all the vegan items that require cooking to actually be digestible. You can't just eat a handful of dry brown rice or quinoa - even wholemeal bread is cooked. Some uncooked vegetables will cause intestinal problems and pass through the system without releasing most of their nutrients. A body can handle a long term, vegan, restriced calorie diet if nutritionally concentrated, but not a RAW one, which excludes far too much of what it needs to be healthy.

If you watch animals in the wild, you'll see that they have a raw diet. And after they've eaten, they have to sleep for long periods of time in order for the food to digest. We don't do that any more. So to expect a modern lifestyle to adapt to a completely raw diet is foolish.
That is carnivores who have eaten several days worth of animal protein in one sitting. Protein requires alot of energy to digest. Whether raw meat or cooked meat, the effect is similar. If a human ate 2lb of steak they would begin to feel drowsy in a couple of hours. they would not following 2lb of fruit/vegetable origin - but they would have a dodgy stomach for sure.

I also feel obviously (like I m definitely biased but trying to give facts here) that a non-vegan diet has more cons (because for totally evolutionary reasons like, nature didn't design / evolve cow milk for humans but baby cows, humans can't eat raw meat without falling sick, etc., And our closest genetic siblings are chimps who are vegan 97% of the times with 3% of their diet comprising of insects - but no meat) Dairy also has too many hormones and it exacerbates breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and even respiratory diseases (in the last 4 months of turning vegan, I have recovered from sinus headaches, perpetual cold, severe episodes of acute bronchitis, so this I can 100% guarantee). 1) I posted a comment earlier about this topic and I'd like to clear up a few things to the people that say I have no idea what I'm talking about. First, I have a Bachelors of Science in Anthropology. One of my research papers had to do with the reproductive cycles of women in Hunting-Gathering societies compared to Western diets. Regularly monthly ovulations are not normal. Most hunting-gathering women don't even start puberty until they reach around 16 years of age compared to 9-11 years old in Western society and they usually only ovulate once or twice a year. The reason..Western women's diets are heavy in protein. Chimpanzees have similar biology in that the females do not ovulate when they eat a low protein diet or when they are nursing. But males will kill small animals and feed the meat to the females to put them in estrous so they will be ready to mate. Modern Hunter Gatherers had the same results.
2) The women in Hunting Gathering groups rarely ate meat because it took so much time and energy to track and kill animals. Not much payoff of calories when other sources were available. Hunting was usually undertaken for the simple reason of supplementing a food shortage. But when the men successfully brought back meat, everyone ate it. Researchers found that shortly after eating meat, the women would ovulate and have a better chance of getting pregnant. So it's not assumption...it's fact.

She started the vegan thing, and eventually her overall diet started back negative health impacts. Then she started investigating why, and ways to fix it. This is what happened here, she tried to eat raw vegan food, and only 1200 calories a day, and if you eat vegan food you need to set more protein rich food than you would if you ate meat because there is not an as high concentration of protein. It's a shame stories as this one makes it look like a plant based diet is the problem.

I feel sorry for her for trying so hard to look great and thinking she could have so many followers. Delusional? Perhaps. ALL the vegans I know have become ill. It is NOT a natural diet for a human being. Not that all of us need to eat red meat, (personally I can not, I have not the enzyme to digest it) but eating a balanced diet, learning how specific vitamins and minerals are required for us to live is a better way to survive. Did you know most vegans lose their B12 within a few years, we can store it in our bodies but once depleted it makes us tired and ill. Calcium will reduce very fast, within 6 months, some other vitamins only days. So most Vegans feel GREAT for a few years then whammo! B12 depletion, lack of selenium, iodine rah rah rah, and they get ill. This girl was trying to keep up with societies image of 'perfection' and even deluded herself till it came time for her to 'wake up' I wish her well. She may have done permanent damage to her body. Instagram is an addiction.
I personally happen to know plenty of long time vegans with normal health (not trying to discredit your experience at all, just saying I have a different experience). I also know vegans that quit because of health issues, when I ask them about their diet it usually turns out they did not follow vegan food recommendations at all and had a very poorly designed diet. Vegan diets can be healthy and safe, but you definitely need to follow recommendations. I agree with you, vegans will eventually run out of B12 if they don't supplement it, either through supplements or fortified food (food to which it has been added, like certain vegan burgers/sausages, soy milk etc.) Any vegan that says they don't need B12 is an absolute idiot who's eventually gonna screw up their health. Getting enough selenium as a vegan is not actually that hard.
