Person Shares A Conversation With An Aggressive Vegan Who Accused Them Of Appropriation Just Because They Enjoy Tofu
Fear me, non-vegans, for I am the mighty tofu gatekeeper, and no meat-lovers shall feast on this delicious food! This is what one internet user nearly sounded like when they started having a cyberbullying sesh at an omnivore, who’d complimented their tofu recipe. Talk about being rude to someone acting nice.
“Tofu is strictly for vegans.” That’s what the self-proclaimed guardian of tofu declared after receiving praise from a beef-eater, who adored the tofu-lovers ‘tofurkey’ (tofu turkey) recipe. What followed was a back-and-forwards exchange that showed just how condescending and arrogant this particular veganism preacher is.
The text messages were uploaded to the ‘Gatekeeping’ subreddit, which has over 654,000 members. According to this online community, gatekeeping is “when someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity. /r/gatekeeping is a subreddit for screenshots and stories of gatekeepers in the wild.”

The vegan was angry that the meat-eater was eating all of their tofu. Good heavens, the horror

Medical News Today writes that tofu, which is made from soybean curds, is “naturally gluten-free and low in calories. It contains no cholesterol and is an excellent source of iron and calcium.” So it’s clear why vegan dieters, vegetarians, and omnivores are all angling for a bite.
What’s more, tofu is said to improve kidney function and cardiovascular health and may help fight prostate and breast cancer. This makes it a health-goldmine that ought to be shared with everyone, not jealously guarded by just a few.
I’m personally a big fan of meat — give me a steak any day of the week. But I know I should eat more veggies, greens, and other healthy foods. Whether or not you eat or avoid meat, there are numerous benefits of an all-vegan diet.
Healthline argues that vegan diets are richer in certain nutrients like fiber, antioxidants and “beneficial plant compounds”, potassium, magnesium, folate, and vitamins A, C and E. Furthermore, going vegan can help you lose weight, lower your blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. But whatever your dietary preferences, the most important thing is acting like an adult, not an angsty teenager with something to prove and a holier-than-thou attitude.
This appropriation bullshit needs to stop. I'm going to appropriate the shit out of anything I like or want. This is my life and I adopt what is best for me, whether it be from my culture or another or whatever.
Now I want to throw an Appropriation Party. Everyone dress, hair, makeup in as many cultures as possible in one outfit, not as a mockery but to look as good as possible, food, alcohol and beverages from just everywhere, music games and entertainment from the entire planet . What holiday can we appropriate for this?
If your party is about honoring other cultures and trying to look good, it's not appropriation. If it's about throwing it in people's faces that you don't care what their culture is or means, and just to prove that you can do what you please 100% of the time, it's at least insensitive. Appropriation is doing stuff like dressing in a cheongsam with chopsticks in your hair and saying you're a "geisha," which is a perpetuation of inaccurate and harmful stereotypes (cheongsams are Chinese and geisha are Japanese, and there's a lot of baggage here). Or taking a sacred or otherwise important token from one culture and misusing it. Going to Japan and dressing in a kimono for photos is not appropriation, dressing in a friend's kimono is not appropriation. Buying a "sexy Kimono/geisha costume" for Halloween is absolutely appropriation and upholds racist stereotypes. So your party, as you describe it, doesn't sound like appropriation. But it also sounds like you don't care.
Christmas! :P
The only people who think appropriating isn’t bad are people who have never had their culture appropriated. Most cultures have had to change their culture because what they do is seen as offensive or misunderstood, so there is really no choice but to appropriate in one way or another.
I've had my culture appropriated, and I don't think its bad. Culture isn't a pure thing, and it shouldn't remain 'pure' because that concept in and of itself is racist. When white people wear dreadlocks, and people call it 'appropriation' that's both untrue and harmful. Dreadlocks have been around freaking forever, and to pretend they are exclusively for someone of a certain race is racist, period. Indians probably 'invented' dreadlocks, so when Egyptians started using them-- guess what! It was appropriated. The greeks followed suit. Culture is an ever evolving and changing thing, and it is both folly and close minded to want to confine it. To make culture a thing only certain races can enjoy-- it cements the thing as an 'other' that is untouchable. This is bad. The only way to understand other cultures is to adopt them. I'm not talking about using a national dress as a costume, although when people wear lederhosen out of context, its apparently not appropriation?
Seriously! I've getting way too out of hamd and it's absolutely rediculous! People should be able to eat, wear and do whatever they want as long as they're not physically hurting anyone else.
Mr Me, buying a cheongsam and saying you're dressed as a "geisha" for Halloween is one example of appropriation. Here's how it could be harmful or at least offensive: cheongsam are Chinese, geisha are Japanese. Back before WWII, geisha were court performers and oiran were courtesans. But the two started getting conflated. People started viewing geisha as prostitutes. Then Westerners came, and started to refer to prostitutes as "geesha girls" and brought those stereotypes home with them. Now women wear Chinese clothing, saying they're prostitutes/geisha for Halloween. So now a dress from a whole different culture is getting conflated with prostitution because it's been appropriated by people who don't know the difference and don't care. Non-Chinese can wear cheongsams, non-Japanese can wear kimonos, but know the difference, and don't perpetuate racist stereotypes.
I couldn't agree more, I come from a family of Irish on one side, black on the other and I'm married to a Jew. I don't know what culture is mine exactly, or my kids for that matter. It doesn't matter. If a black woman or a white woman (or a mixed race woman like me) wears a kimono I think that means they are influenced by and are paying homage to that culture, not stealing it, or warping it, they are celebrating it. People should be able to wear what they want, it's no one else's business. And don't get me started on what they eat...

Here in Korea, we traditionally eat both tofu AND meat/seafood pieces within the same stew. ♥
sounds good
Lots of Asian dishes have both tofu and meat in the same dish. Ex. mapo tofu
That's the point. ^_- So much for "appropriation".
Can I have some
Anytime, sugar. ♥
:)
Yummy!
Sounds yummy, what is it called? Or can I get a link to the recipe?
Oh, there are many stewy and soupy recipes that include both tofu and meat (and/or seafood). Basically anything that ends with "-jjigae", really (or however it is written in roman letters). So, you can try looking for kimchi-jjigae, the best known one, it usually contains pieces of tofu and pieces of pork. Or soondubu-jjigae, that is tofu based, with addition of small seafood, like some types of small shellfish and crab (but this one uses a different kind of tofu). It should also be pretty simple to cook.
@Daria, thank you ❤️
If this lady (probably Karen) know about this, Korea will be in serious problems. Everybody please keep silent about this information.
I always been quite jealous of asian recipes. In my country, most of the recipes are not healthy.
I don't know where you're from, but don't worry - every country has their share of unhealthy recipes too.

Maybe you simply did not search hard enough. As every country also existed BEFORE junk food. Try YouTube it is literally FULL of good cooking videos.
Thanks for reminding me, now I must go hunt for some dubu jjigae.
Hot and Sour Soup contains tofu, meat and seafood.
Exactly.

I do, no issues here.
A lot of Vegans are not in it for the health benefits, just the social perks of being perceived as "better than you"
yep and this kind of behavior perpetuates that persona.
Most vegans are not in it for the health benefits - SO TRUE! Most vegans are vegan for the animals and nothing else. The positive impact on our health and on the environment is just a great side effect.
If the person in the post were in it for the animals, though, I think they'd be at least a little happy for any time a meat-eater chooses to forgo meat, because that means less meat eaten overall, an animal saved. But they act like it's a cool label. Like anyone who eats meat needs to eat it 100% of the time.
Puddin, I agree about this vegan - I don't think this person really cares about animals. I'm just pointing out that we are not all crazy and we do want people to eat vegan food.
They're also in it for the Vegan Superpowers. I saw it in "Scott Pilgrim". I think it was a documentary or something.
You can eat meat and be healthy, being vegan for most comes down to the animals.
A lot of Vegans are also interested in animal welfare too. It's a complex area, because a very large number of extra vegans have appeared who may be less interested in animal welfare and more into joining what they perceive as the trend. I do think meat eaters are the ones who think that vegans think they're better than them. Not vegans who think that. Perhaps they feel slightly guilty that they don't really need meat. They simply enjoy the taste.

Yeah... you can do something that drastically decreases the harm and suffering you cause for absolutely selfish and stupid reasons, too.
yeah… al that behavior makes me hate them more and more and more...

The thing is those "better" vegan don't go around vivifying meat-eaters and will just respect everyone's choice while maintaining theirs rather than go around waving photos of tortured animals, warp themselves in package warp, cry father cry mother like a freaking maniac. Period.

Then why don't you become a better vegan and become an example?
Some. Not most. A few.
Social perks?! Really?! Like what, being ridiculed by everyone?!
we are not everyone

Downvotes. Lol. Omnis are such wusses it’s incredible
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
No, a lot of omnivores just think that someone appealing to morality is offensive and a display of who is better. Because omnis can’t get over anyone making a moral declaration that they aren’t a part of. And FYI no vegan is in it for heath benefits. Vegan is a moral stance. Not a diet. You’re thinking of plant based diets. Stay mad.
You dont know most "omnis" to know WHAT they "cant get over". Generalizing Vegans based off the obnoxious behavior of the one in the post is just as vile as generalizing "omnis" based on the few you have experienced. Since you are being so "moral" about your eating habits, how about you also adopt the "moral stance" of not judging millions of people you don't know due to the behavior of a few??

The trend will end with the world if we continue with this broken food and healthcare system. Future is vegan or there isn't any. Read the science and not the propaganda.

That is absolutely not true.

Trina then why don't you become "better than you" version of yourself? Why can't you? Happy spreading the typical anti-vegan propaganda when the world needs to move to a plant based lifestyle to combat the climate crisis? No, vegans don't go vegan for health, they do it for the animals.
And here we have one hallucinating vegan proclaim to save the world by going vegan.
Appropriation? Man she need to talk us, the Chinese. Why the f**K no one check in if we wanted vegans to enjoy our culture and foods?
This ;)

Because nobody cares what you want probably.
Well, obviously tofu is for vegans only. That's why the Chinese people in the 1st century BC always put a 'Vegans only' sign on it.
Sooo if Tofu is strict only for vega/vegetarian Indonesian people won't be able to eat it then. -_- We ate tofu almost every day. Tofu is also the cheapest ingredient that you can buy on traditional market.
Just tips to have tofu as a snack : You can fried tofu that has been submerged with water+garlic+salt and then fried it. And then you can make spicy sauce as dipping sauce with this ingredients : Sweet soy sauce (the thick one)+crushed garlic+crushed chillies.. Mix it together and you can dip yout fried tofu in it. :) This is how a lot of Indonesian people eat their tofu with.. "Tahu goreng dan sambal kecap" :)
Sounds nice
That sounds fantastic. Thanks, trying it tonight!
Now my mouth is watering.
Wina Jackson, you are making me hungry for something that is very difficult to find where I live. Can tofu be made at home easily? Does anyone have any suggestion? I love tofu.
One of the "internet users" responses was spot on... the majority of vegans/vegetarians LOVE introducing their love of non-meat foods to friends and family! There's enough to go around for everyone! I don't know a single person who would say/feel something like that. People can be weird over the most stoopid things. :-/
It makes me so happy when my omni friends like my cooking!
That’s because this didn’t happen. An omnivore was mad and made this up. I would bet any human life on it
She is tripping, who said tofu is only for vegan to eat, many Asian have eating tofu all their life and they are the meat lover. Now what? Are you gonna say they are the fakers too? Truly amazing!
I'm an omnivore and my favorite food is a burger, but I absolutely love tofu
I think we are all dumber for having read this
God forbid the meat eater have any fruits or veggies, because you know, appropriations.
If we all agree that we don't want to stereotype people maybe we shouldn't be posting articles like this. Maybe not everyone, but plenty of people will read this and walk away dismissively thinking vegans must be crazy and hypocritical.
Exactly. I get the impression they're doing this on purpose. Vegans are treated almost like anti-vaxxers here.
This is so stupid. Most vegans want other people to eat vegan food, because that's one less animal that is being eaten. Any logical vegan acknowledges that the key to reducing animal suffering and lessening the environmental impact of farming meat is actually through encouraging everyone to reduce their meat intake, not by pressuring people to go vegan or vegetarian. I've never met anyone who thinks this way and I will downvote every single anti-vegan article this site posts.
...yes and yes
Tofu, stuffed with meats and/or seafood, is a common preparation throughout Asian countries - China, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese come to mind. Doesn't everyone know mapo tofu is originally made with ground pork? How's about Korean tofu hotpot commonly with meats and/or seafood? This vegan nut job needs to stop appropriating tofu from Asian culture.
This person gives vegans a bad name... :(
Every vegan I know give vegans a bad name.
You don’t know any vegans so that’s just you making up bad names in your mind.
I thought that has already been established long ago.
worth repeating
No they don’t. People hate vegans so deeply that a non vegan definitely made this. And if they didn’t make it they were excited and happy that they found a dumb vegan. Because everyone else is throughly enthralled to try and give vegans a bad name.
Literally the only time I'd ever be mad at an omnivore for eating non-meat food is if we were at a party with only 1 small plate of vegan food amidst a cast array of meaty options and they ate my only chance at salvation.
Breaking news: an Internet rando has weird opinions. I’m looking forward to more of this hard-hitting journalism. If there’s one thing we need more of, it’s lazy pointless posts that propagate neurotic ideas and spread negativity. It’s just what I look for on BP.
This is just an entitled little sh*t that happens to be vegan
So funny cause it's usually the other way around. I catch so much shit for eating a plant based diet. That vegan guy was either a troll or an idiot, maybe both, lmao.
I'm vegan and I always encourage non-vegans to eat vegan food. How can you expect people to go vegan when they don't like vegan food? Just recently my great uncle said that he likes Impossible burgers more than burgers made from animals and it makes me so happy! Unfortunately, I don't think he'll ever go vegan but he's going to eat less meat and he won't be funding the slaughter of thousands of animals as much as before, so it is a good step.
'Tofu is strictly for vegans vegetarians' is not true. Tofu is an important ingredient in lots of Chinese and Japanese foods.
This dude is an idiot, but this bullshit originally comes from meat eaters. "You vegans can't have burgers, because burgers are only for meat eaters". Yeah sure..
I had to do an elimination diet for 2 weeks and basically ate vegan and when I tried the vegan "cheese" I thought labeling it such was appropriating* real, dairy cheese. * While I say it in jest, the thought of eating that product again haunts my dreams.
I love most vegan foods, but vegan cheese is just repulsive
Agreed!!!!
Because you’re not smart enough to try more than one thing. “I didn’t like shrimp so meat tastes bad,” is how you sound
Regardless of the diet you choose, what someone else chooses to eat is none of your business. Claiming that meat-eaters who also eat tofu are "stealing" from vegetarians is the most asinine thing I've read today. They went out, they bought it, they cooked it, it's theirs to do with as they please. They didn't rip it out of the hands of a poor starving vegan. Idiots like this make everyone else assume that other vegans and vegetarians are just as bonkers.
It actually is all of our business if your food is ruining the planet or hurting others, you know.
Must be nice in lala land. Bye
Killing the planet and animals is everyone’s business
oh well i guess i have to go vegan for a few days to clean out the "vegan only" food from my fridge.
Yay, yet another fucking hit piece against vegans. Fuck off with this bullshit. Dumb fucks are dumb fucks. They don’t represent every vegan, for fuck’s sake.
"Person shares barely believable conversation with no real value"
So, if I eat an authentic German brat, have a strong German ancestery but far am enough removed that we don't speak German or share German culture anymore as a United States citizen, does that mean I've appropriated the brat? Just saying.
It almost feels like articles like this are staged. I noticed, yes as a vegan, a lot of vegan bashing on bored panda and it saddens me. I hope the author will write articles in the future that have more depth and are more positive. There is enough sadness already in this world.
It bothers me too. I stick around this site for the animals, and the funny stories, and the art but the vegan bashing seems pretty common here and I don't like it.
And I don't understand it! "Oh, rescue animals! So cute! Recovery stories! Wow! Stupid vegans!" It doesn't make sense.
I know. I haven't seen a single post on here about veganism that isn't bashing vegans. Even the one a while back about cows had so many anti-vegan comments. - fellow vegan!
Good grief! I have met half a dozen vegans and all have been courteous. They've been happy to share recipes or a taste of vegan food. I'm very happy to be related to a vegan because every Christmas I get to eat yummy vegan cake.
"That’s what the self-proclaimed guardian of tofu declared after receiving praise from a beef-eater, who adored the tofu-lovers ‘tofurkey’ (tofu turkey) recipe" Who wrote this? It is clearly the vegan praising the meat-eaters tofurky recipe, not the beef-eater giving praise.
Wow.... as a vegetarian, all I can say is WOW. This guy is insane. Like one of the comments said, as a vegan, the guy should be GLAD that this person is eating meat alternatives. I really can't comprehend the whole 'gatekeeping' mindset some people get into. Can't we happily share the things we enjoy instead of hoarding it greedily like it's somehow going to mean less for us? Also, this guy is such an idiot. Where the hell does he think tofu even came from?
In an effort to promote peace and harmony I'll give up my rights to tofu to any vegan that wants it.

Mine! :)
There are people who are allergic/sensitive to soybeans. Don't worry about me eating your precious curds, it makes me itch. In fact, let me request you get your soy everything out of MY foods AND ink. Don't fake my hamburgers with your plants, it will make me ill.
Sometimes I eat vegetarian options at restaurants purely because its tasty :) I couldn't give up meat but incorporating a few vegetarian meals into my life couldn't do harm either
My household is a lot like that. We eat lots of veggies, pasta, beans, eggs, and cheese; fish when it's on sale, a rotisserie chicken once in a while, and other meat like pork chops or ground beef pretty rarely because we're poor. There are so many amazing veggie burgers out there now, they've become a major staple in our freezer!
This is fake, anyone that thinks this is real is a fool!!! Most vegans love it when meat eaters get into tofu. If it is real, it is a one in a million IDIOT, and I don't know why Bored Panda loves making vegans look bad so much. (I'm not vegan myself, but it is a very healthy and admirable lifestyle) I can't imagine any vegan EVER saying that tofu belongs to vegans alone, it is totally obsurd!!!!!!!!
Literally everyone here is dumb as shit for falling for this. Not once but twice on BP. This is the second time it’s been on the front page.
Yes the amount of comments and furore here is hilarious really, even we have been sucked in as well!!!
If someone use the "apropriation" argument, there's 100% chance that the perosn is being a jackass and is out of line.
"how condescending and arrogant this "PARTICULAR" vegan is" 😂
I don't know about you guys but do you ever just think that some of these comments are just too hilarious. These people need their own sitcom. I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It's usually the best part of a post.
oh we oh, killer tofu!!!
"No vegan diet, no vegan powers!"
Vegan: "The thought of eating animal flesh or products makes me sick to my stomach! Now pass me one of those tofu burgers with vegan cheese, please."
Yeah, you're actually saying the same stuff like this guy did, only in reverse. Well done! Maybe there will be a Bored Panda post about you next time.
It’s almost as if people aren’t against flavors, but immorality. What a trashy thing for you to think.

Yes, I personally choose not to eat animal products since I think the animals are being treated poorly. That part is true, but since when is molding food inte patties or slices only allowed for meat? You know patties don't look like raw meat, and slices don't look like milk? So the only point actually proven is that both vegans and meat eaters like to eat their food shaped as patties and slices. Congrats.
I know several vegans. Two of them are friends of mine. The others? They can fuck off. For the most part, the vegans I have encountered in my life have been zealots for their lifestyle/diet and some have been downright militant. Fuck you, anemia boy. I don't need to hear you're a fucking vegan. Every. Goddamn. Time. We. Eat. A. Fucking. Meal. If you want to be vegan, great! I'm not and have no desire to be so take your self-righteous ass off to any place other than in my face.
... made up for anti-vegan-propaganda. Seriously, anyone believing this is a real vegan?
Time to piss of some vegans: I LOVE TOFU! I love to cut it into thin strips and fry it in bacon grease! It's sooo good! It tastes like bacon, but without the chewy fat!
vegan is special breed.
Kids my chubby ass you meatless freaks! There now I feel better😊
Join FB groups "Lietuvos Ne Veganai" and "No Vegan Latvija" ;)
MOTHERFUCKER DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT EAST ASIA?
Bloody ridiculous! Has this person never heard of Meat Free Monday? Launched by Sir Paul McCartney "The campaign encourages people to help slow climate change, conserve precious natural resources and improve their health by having at least one plant-based day each week." I've followed vegetarian diets before, but for me, my preferred mix is the best of both. Some days I don't eat any meat, some I'll have meat at one meal. Some people just genuinely enjoy vegetarian meals, even if they still eat meat at other times. I could never be vegan, I love cheese far too much. As stated above, if everyone had just one meat free day a week it could make a huge difference to our planet. Bad vegan! They're the militant types that give other vegans a bad name.
Last I checked tofu wasn't invented for vegans....
Has to be a troll. Fucking has to be. ...right? Guys?
Tofu is strictly for vegan? (Laughing in Chinese)
If they had ever heard of Minimalist Baker, who only shares vegan recipes, which many many vegans refer to, they aren’t vegan or even vegetarian. But what are you going to do, refuse to use their delicious recipes?
This comment has been deleted.
And Vegans wonder why most can't stand them
No we know why you hate vegans and it doesn’t have anything to do with this.
It's mostly due to people like you.
Next thing will be: You're not allowed to eat fruits and vegetables when you're not vegan because it's "appropriation"... :|
I should have counted all those times someone told vegans, that they can't have burgers or anything sausage shaped because they are vegan and those shapes and general recipes are only for meat eaters. So yeah.
Uhm, ok... I had to look up the word 'appropriation', but isn't that litterally what she's doing by saying tofu is only for vegans and vegetarians???
I don't like most meats too, I only like the taste of chicken so I eat it occasionally. I mostly eat meat free meals but it doesn't mean I'm "partly vegetarian" lol. This person is pretty freaky
Do you hear how stupid that argument sounds? It sounds just as stupid for every other instance of claimed "cultural appropriation". This is why we make of you.
And tofu from Asian countries.... where vegan always have a hard time, because in each dish will be at least fish sauce :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I'm calling bullshit on this. Never has a single vegan ever given a carnist shit for not eating an animal. The meat and dairy industries are getting desperate.
So true, it's a fucking non-story that goes nowhere and plays on the stereotype that Vegans spend all their time telling people what to eat, which I can assure you is the rverse of what happens
You've met every Vegan?
you are getting desperate
Than all of japan is appropriating their food cause they eat tofu.
I'm a vegetarian and I despise tofu. I give you permission to eat all of mine!
Do you know how to tell when somebody is vegan? They'll tell you.
You’re not even doing it right.
Is no one going to point out that Tofu isnt "only" for vegans and vegetarians? Tofu's been around since ancient China and there ain't no Vegans or Vegetarians back then. Tofu isn't owned by anyone - everyone can eat it just coz they like it.
Tofu is only for vegans? That's like the equivalent of someone walking up to me while I'm eating carrot sticks and saying, you can't eat that! Carrots are only for rabbits!
Oh gawd. Was the vegan's name Allyson?
I am a huge meat eater and I also LOVE tofu and make meals with it on a weekly basis.
With that kind of militant attitude and intolerance, you can be sure this vegan is a proud member of PETA. Way to encourage meat eaters to try a meatless diet; tell them they're not allowed to eat meat alternatives and then report them. What a douchebag.
This comment has been deleted.
Tofa has been in many Asian cuisines for centuries, over 2000 years in China according to Wikipedia. I've never heard any of my Chinese friends cry 'culture appropriation' when it comes to tofu being widely enjoyed outside of Asia... Perhaps I should ask? Lol
I could crack a joke about how the lack of meat caused his brain to shrink but I'm better than that. Yeah.
Not eating animals doesn't cause your brain to shrink...
You’d have to be dumb as fuck to think that’s even sort of clever. That shit is lame.
That escalated quickly
"Appropriation." On the other side of things, that last comment had me chuckling XD, good response
The last two years I'm vegeterian for my own reasons. No one in my family We eat all together.. I don't understand the vegans. In human nature is to eat everything. The point is to not overeat meat or waste it to the garbage. One animal sacrificed for us, to feed us or our pets. It deserve our respect. And for me this is the point. Eat less meat, from little farms, that respect the animals. No overconsume. The happiness is not in our food.
To help you understand vegans, I can explain our reasoning. It is human nature to be omnivores, but we don't have to eat animal products to be healthy (as has been proven by thousands of people). The animals are not sacrificed, they are slaughtered needlessly because their flesh tasts good. They don't care if you respect them or say a prayer for them at the dinner table, they don't want to be slaughtered and eaten, they want to live. You're already vegetarian and it is an easy step to veganism! The dairy and egg industries are just as bad as the meat industry.
Many people do have to eat animal proteins, though. I'd never be able to cut all animal products out of my diet, personally. I already have low energy, and I get longer-lasting energy from cheese and eggs than I do from, say, a bowl of whole grain oatmeal with fruit. The diet isn't the problem; the sources of the food, capitalism, and factory farming are. It's absolutely possible to raise animals humanely for food and care about them.
From my point of view, I can understand what you say. But I'm sceptic Is in the human nature to be vegan?. Because as I know the vegans must take suplemantaries, vitamins etc. All from humans made in laboratory..If veganism it was in human nature why is around the world people who die from hunger? For me it is sacrifice. In nature an animal eat another to survive. Unfair? For me yes, but still this is in our nature. To eat everyday meat is not in our nature. To wast the food is unrespect. The eggs and milk are bad, from big companies. In normal conditions, if you don't take the egg a chicken can eat it or break it. In normal conditions sometimes the milk can't be eated all by the baby animals.
Yes! I like what you said! Eat the meat from the farms that respect their animals. I agree, I don't have to be a vegetarian or vegan to be horrified by how the big companies inhumanly treat their animals and deliberately inflict physical pain upon them for their own selfish monetary gain. It's despicable. So yes, if you can afford it, please support your local, humane farms. Sometimes they are cheaper than the grocery store too! (Sometimes lol)
I'm gonna buy a block of tofu cheese the size of a turkey and eat it with a medium rare steak right now! F..k the system!
How is this any different than any of the other "appropriation" claims people make?
Tofu is not my favorite food but I do enjoy eating it occasionally. Sometimes I use it in curry instead of meat.
yeah! we need to eat tofu, so vegan would starve and die! Fucking appropriation shit. i wanna have a time machine to not have to take this crap anymore. I love meat but i appreciate tofu, bean and any substitute.
Tofu is rare you absolute tool, you know how much it costs to make that? No, you don't, because you people just consume and eat everything you want, letting the rest of us suffer. People die in the process of making Tofu, the method is secretly kept between generations and it is dangerous to gather the materials, but nooooo, you couldn't give a shit could you? You don't care that the people making your food could die. No you don't, now stop being such a cunt.
Ask this born again vegan is he/she wears leather shoes or has the latest designer leather purse to carry her living accessory, dressed so ridiculously the entire animal kingdom can't stop laughing.
Something is only "important" if we make it so. Being "vegan" is just as important as being a "trash collector" or a being a "good father". What's important to you is not important to others. Not everyone shares your world views, religion, politics, or feelings. And demanding respect is a sure fire way to not get it.
Earth and animals are important to you and everyone whether you accept it or not.
So sue Asian ancestors, they created tofu and tempe, ate them, waaaay before this vegan thingy exist
Tofu should be culturally appropriated to the trash can
TOFU is Not going to help you agiasnt Cancer.
I eat meat and I drink water. How dare those vegetarians and vegans drink water. That's an appropriation based purely on what is stylish.
Nah, water is vegan. You can't have it.
Maybe millitant vegans need to realize that Asian cultures have been eating tofu for centuries. There for it is the vegans that are "Appropriating" in the first place.
What does this have to do with militant vegans? Explain.
WTF... keep eating tofu & perhaps put out a recipe for kale, wind her up more. Diet is a choice & nobody should dictate what you can or cannot eat..
No one thinks vegans or vegatarians are cool. This isn't fricking trend, it's a way of life, no matter againts the human nature or not. It's a personal decision. Sincirely a meat lover.
This is so stupid! Tofu is eaten all over the world and in most (if not all) Asian countires Tofu is eaten along side meat! Tofu also has a lot of health benefits because it's made out of soy beans. Also, please let's stop with this appropriation BS.
My problem with these aggressive vegans is that not only is plant protein not as useful to some people (or outright damaging), but in many locations globally it's just not sustainable to expect everyone to be vegan.
@lapetos You're welcome to read about lectins and sensistivity to them, as well as Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, which may or may not be related, since it's most often triggered by soy or dairy (which of course comes from animals that eat plants). There are also several (admittedly very rare) conditions, primarily found in second- or third-world countries and indigenous populations, that come from severe deficiency of complete proteins. The main problem with a plant-based diet is that plants don't have complete proteins, and therefore the sources of plant protein have to be rotated frequently so nutritional deficits don't occur. I mostly have the point of view that I do from seeing multiple people with rare medical conditions that make it so that veganism does them more harm than good, but I don't recall what any of them were; they may have been the things I've already mentioned, I don't remember.
Plant protein isn't the problem, the problem is poorly planned diets. Most meat substitutes only contain about half the protein in meat, so you have to eat double the amount. If you go into being vegan and don't look up what you have to change to maintain a healthy well balanced diet then I'm sorry but that's your own fault, so please don't go around bashing veganism. And what you say about not everyone being able to go vegan - of course not everybody has the means to go vegan, and no vegan in their right mind would actually try to force veganism on someone. That said, if you can please consider eating less meat, eggs and dairy, or try to support your local farms instead.
Practically every vegan of any note that I've seen, whether they're an influencer or run a website or just hang out in forums, has been incredibly aggressive about trying to push veganism on people. The stereotype exists because a LOT of vegans/vegetarians are like this, in my experience. You don't get people to change their diets and ways of thinking by telling them that they're horrible people who support the wholesale murder of animals, is all I'm saying. The factory farm industry is rife with problems, it's true, but it's possible to raise animals for food while also caring about them and treating them humanely throughout their lives. I don't eat a huge amount of meat, maybe once every couple of weeks, but I eat a lot of eggs, and some dairy, and ultimately it comes down to veggies just not filling me up and keeping me from being hungry the way animal proteins do. I'd support my local farms more if I had the money.

Damaging? That's too grotesque for not being elaborated :)
Why is this even posted? The alleged vegan is mentally ill.
These self proclaimed VEGANS are the most ignorant people ever!
Aggressive Vegan 😜
Actually, vegans need to stop appropriating Japanese culture by eating so much tofu. As a half Japanese person myself, I am deeply offended. While we're at it, they should stop appropriating rabbit culture as well. Root vegetables are not for you! As a human-rabbit hybrid, I am deeply offended. Finally, they need to stay out of swimming pools and the ocean. As a Japanese, human rabbit hybrid that is also part dolphin, I am deeply offended. Swimming is our thing. It is not for you!
Soo... are non-East-Asian Vegans appropriating East-Asian culture by eating Tofu? OMG - how DARE they??? **slams desk in absolute mock outrage**
Tofu was invented waay before vegans so you can go right ahead and screw off
Vegans were invented? That explains a lot :)
oh no i hope vegans don't keep the fruits and vegetables to themselves as well D:
Stealing their food!? Wtf! She is freaking a bitch and a ignorant moron! Smh, what a crackhead!
It’s OK to be vegan. But don’t tell others what to eat and not eat - and don’t claim vegan is natural for humans. No people has been vegan, but some has been almost 100% on an animal diet (inuits for example).
Don’t tell other people what to say. If someone sees you doing something wrong they have every right to speak up. That’s what a society is.
What you see as wrong others do not. If you don’t want to eat meat, then don’t but no matter what you do or say will not stop me from eating meat. Telling someone what to do (that isn’t illegal or against rules) is a dick move and gives most vegans a bad name and are a commonly a hated group of people in society. (As you can see from many comments). My brother is the best vegan I know, he does not push his personal choice and agenda on others, he understands that everyone is different and makes different choices. People have eaten meat since the beginning and they will continue until the end so you need to learn to deal with it. It’s here to stay whether you like it or not. Also here’s a fact, not everyone can live on a vegan diet anyway.

(Struggling with heart disease.) It's not only OK to be vegan, it is necessary if we want to rid the world of starvation and save it from further unnecessary destruction.
People are stupid that's all, worse if they want to be "special" and "better"

You wouldn't think that someone who only eats plants would be able to be so aggressive. Not enough protein in his/her diet so can't process his thoughts logically! Too funny! Think I'm going to go out and buy me some tofu right damn now!
I like tofu with pork! Their this dish century's before vegans community

"You absolute f@%$" Perfect response .
Angry vegan... is there any other kind - they forgot condescending. It's usually angry condescending vegan ;)have a burger and STFU you twats cuz I'll never "appropriate" your bullshit, lol!
Wow you sound angry. And I must say that isn't this comment a bit condescending of you?
Calm down, psycho.
I wonder if those same vegans ever asked Chinese how they feel about tofu being appropriated for their self-important vegan lifestyle.
Eww.
This asswipe should be locked up in a slaughterhouse till he(/she?) admits tofu/soy is for everyone. Does he/she even KNOW that soy is used as cattle feed? For 1lb of beef it takes 70lbs of soybeans as feed. 1(imperial) pound of tofu is made from 1kg of soybeans. And what's left of the soy can still be used for other purposes. Also it takes a 100 times more water to produce 1lb of meat than to grow 1lb of soybeans. And greenhouse gases? 134lbs of CO2 vs 23lbs for beef vs tofu/lb.

Yeah, and it has largely the same nutrients as well. (Tofu also has carbohydrates and fibre, but the minerals (iron, zinc) are pretty much the same.)
Where do you think that comes from? 😜
I can't have tofu, it makes me sick to my stomach. My husband loves it, though, and he'll often cook it for himself - which is just fine, because he likes cooking anyway. He's no vegan, though. As he said last weekend, "I am not going to pass on perfectly braised short ribs just because I'm mostly a vegetarian...that would be crazy."
Ha! I struck gold! https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Tofu/

And this (I am getting increasingly hungry) : https://www.seriouseats.com/2014/06/shopping-cooking-guide-different-tofu-types.html
I would imagine the majority of psycho, violent , antifa terrorists are vegan
You must be a conservative.
What a dumbf**ck! What the hell is wrong with people?! No one's trying to take tofu from you!
Every vegan I know has leather shoes, purse, or car upholstery. So much for caring about animals.
Every omnivore has those too, dumbass. That isn’t what being vegan even means. It’s about doing what is reasonable to prevent animal harm. Like something any idiot can do like just don’t eat meat. Most people weren’t born vegan and still have old shit. Fucking duh. Look it up instead of embarrassing yourself.

Then they're actually not vegans since veganism means your whole lifestyle should be free from animal products. They're probably vegetarians (not lacto -ovo) who incorrectly call themselves vegan.
My brother is a vegan but has a leather jacket. He had the jacket before he became vegan and he said if he throws away the jacket because he is vegan then the animal has gone to waste. He won’t buy anything made from leather or animal products now though.

Awesome Bored Panda spreading the anti-vegan bias and stereotypes. Unsurprisingly the anti-vegans are enjoying it. Oh yes, vegans become vegans to be better than you, is it? Is that your best? Why don't you become one then? You won't and you know why. You talk about vegans being angry like it's a trait only with vegans? Well, read all the comments which are filled with anger and hatred. This is typical of western people who don't know the entire world speak crap. So this one vegan is wrong but don't you go generalize it calling all vegans bla bla bla to spread your personal hatred for vegans. He's clearly naive and ignorant that soy based foods are abundant in other cultures for centuries. Perhaps, about time non-vegans see through the lies spread by dairy and meat industry about soy consumption when there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating soy in any form it's being for a very very long time across cultures and across centuries.

And THIS is exactly why many in the world HATE and MOCK vegans and vegetarians. Because of the attitude of superiority and nastiness. Wow. Geez, then next thing you know, diabetics are going to start having all non-diabetics arrested for eating sweet potatoes. (though I'm not sure why the nutritionists push them so hard, they have more carbs and calories than regular potatoes, and a whole different set of nutrients.) And Lord have mercy... what if you are NOT on a diet or needing to be gluten free, and you love to eat CAULIFLOWER?? Ehhh… get over yourselves. Its FOOD. Be grateful that there's enough to eat! All too many people end up going hungry.\
Nah. You were hating before you read some fake bullshit that suited your confirmation bias. Hater.

It's obvious the vegan was making a cultural appropriation joke, and the meat eater hasn't heard of irony.

Regarding the second last reply, who would ever mix up ketchup with tomato sauce? Why is that a distinction that needs to be clarified???
Definition: Ketchup, also known as catsup, ketsup, red sauce, and tomato sauce, is a sauce used as a condiment.
Cause some countries call ketchup and tomato sauce the opposite of what we call them here in th USA (assuming that's where you're from). In some countries, ketchup is what we call tomato sauce and tomato sauce is what we call ketchup.
It's a good thickener and it adds smoothness to any tomato sauce. It also has sugar in it, so many people use it if they've overdone the peppers in their sauce to counteract the heat a little bit.

Instead of spreading awareness on climate crisis, reading the facts from scientists that shows how imperative it is for us all to switch to a plant based diet to not make the end of the world, we are making mockery because we don't care about the planet beyond ourselves. No vegans aren't superior beings, they're regular humans who eat, wear, buy things comparing the suffering footprint which also leds to reducing your carbon, water and waste footprint. There's enough science available but we choose to wilfully ignore and read the bias.
Was it really necessary to post that three times?

We Asians think what Caucasians do to tofu is an abomination. Don't 'dress' it up. Don't try to make it something it's not. Just eat it for what it is. Then have a steak.
Wow. Thanks. Now you just made us Asians look bad.
Don't look now, but they think we're shitty drivers, too. (The truth is most of us are!)
And here we go on caucasians being the only people who "use cultural appropriation" once again.
Plenty of Asians are Caucasian. Caucasian doesn’t mean Anglo Saxon or white.

I think the vegan has consumed too much soy and is suffering estrogen hormonal imbalances leading to rage issues.
What holiday can we appropriate for
