Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

  • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
  • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
  • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
  • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
  • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
  • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
  • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

Solutions might include:

  • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
  • Involve local community in local government;
  • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
  • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
  • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

Ultimately, cities can bring us obstacles and opportunities as well as freedom and captivity, and it's up to us to get the most out of them.

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not... But I would love my own cubicle! Pre-pandemic I worked in an open plan office. Foot traffic behind me, half the floor could see my screen, no wall for personal effects.. cubicles were dystopian in the 90s.. in 2020s their something to be desired!

I'd take these cubes over the new 'more efficient at fostering teamwork' open plan cubes or tables. A buddy who's a senior financial analyst with an office at our old job literally sits at what look like a conference table with 5-7 other people at his new one. If you're not sure what they looks like, search images for 'buzzfeed office'.

That's more room than the Wets Fakego place I worked. Shallow "cubes" so close you ran your chair against the guy behind you when you got up. Some "cubes" had 2 people at a table. Nowhere to hang a coat in the upper Midwest. Mostly temps.

To be fair, they at least are allowed some decorations. I once worked in a place where EVERYTHING was according to company's "vision". No posters or personal artifacts were allowed. Some people were forced to remove their own plants and they (plants, not people) were replaced with uniform plants in uniform pots.

Meh. That's any call center or large company's workspace...so what? There is absolutely nothing "unbelievable" or "nightmarish" about this. Its a workspace with cubicles. What, you'd rather it was all private offices? Makes no sense for what these people do. In fact these people don't even need to be in a commercial office building at all - so an actual office would be REALLY wasteful. These jobs can all be performed remotely. And in the future, you'll see fewer "cube farms" like this just because the workers will be at home, in their bath robe, doing exactly the same job, but much happier, because they didn't have to drive an hour in soul-crushing traffic or ride some disgustingly filthy public transit to get to the office.

I used to work for a call center and being able to decorate was such a small thing but it helped moral a lot. The company got bought out and the new owners changed the rules and removed the decorations and enforced a new rigid dress code that was seriously uncomfortable. I'd prefer this 100%.

He and two other instructors were given "offices" in a tiny room that had been a six person call center, with "desks" three feet wide that were really like pathetic study carrels. I spent 50 years in this kind of environment. It's not all bad. You have privacy, your own stuff, and the cool part is you get a new neighbor every six months.

Yes. Unfortunately that looks exactly like where l used to work! I hated every second of it and I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there. I didn’t last long once at one my wings for an airline, I was out of there like a lightning bolt. It’s a horrible thing to do to human beings. But we have to make a living. Some people get married had kids and got stuck there. Thank God I didn’t. You could also play “where’s Waldo?”

Not to mention other companies where the staff were once in small town offices.

I worked in a call center that did overdue bill reminders and the occasional bill payment, and it looked much the same.

Add some pretty decor so you don’t realize that your life is slowly ebbing away while you are dealing with pissed off people who paid insurance companies for nothing

I never understood why office decor should always be gray. Wall, tables, ceiling. And a touch of black with chairs and computers. Is it supposed to help employees concentrate? Does it ever work for someone?

As someone who has both worked in one of these set ups and an open floor plan, I would take this set up any day. Open floor plans are barely a step above sweatshop style seating. Here, at least they have walls between people where you don't have to stare at your neighbor 3 feet away in front, to your right, your left and directly behind you. It looks like they have at least 2 panels worth of space. The desks are separate per person.THERE ARE WALLS. Sure this might look ugly and depressing compared to how "chic" open floor plans look in photographs, but this is better then what most people have to deal with now. Oh, and did I mention, AT LEAST THEY HAVE WALLS?!?!?

We used to have cubicles and I miss it because it was your cubicle, you can decorate it anyway you wish. I had a snack bar, neon lights, and a digital clock. It was cozy and I miss it. We work from home now, which is great, but I miss my co-workers.

You know, these people might have decorated their own cubicles. If I had to work in an office again, I would prefer a cubicle to those places with long tables where you have people sitting right up next to you.

The decor is very kindergarten. I wonder if the cubicles themselves are more personable, with at least pictures and chachkis special to the employee?

I'd be afraid the roof would collapse on me (or whatever is up above, probably a bunch more stories of buildings.) Rather be in a cave, it's safer.

So either a cubical that comes with privacy, or rows of desks with none where everyone keeps an eye on you

In my country the biggest highway is 3 lanes. No city has more than 3 lanes. And we consider it an achievement. I am amazed at this picture honestly!

I will never understand the lure of Dubai, it's a giant soulless shopping mall for rich people. They can have it, it's tacky and ugly.

Again context is great. This was done to facilitate troop movements quickly in and out of the capital which proved vital in WWII as the soldiers from Siberia crossed Red Square in the May Day parades and went straight to the front lines to repel the Nazis. The French similarly built huge boulevards in Paris to facilitate troop movements and to keep people from being able to build barricades, which is a French national tradition.
