Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

  • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
  • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
  • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
  • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
  • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
  • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
  • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

At least in SimCity the building type would vary a little bit (unless we're talking the original SimCity, where each building with the same property value has the same icon, but that could never happen in such a big zone).

It's developments like these that would really benefit from Urban Planners to create nice neighbourhoods that work with their surroundings, rather than these that are just racked and stacked to cram as many in and to hell with how it feels to actually live there

I don’t know where this is, but the name sounds like it may be in a desert, so trees are NOT a “given” for every neighborhood.

Real problem is stupidity of 'planning dept.' If you replace every fourth row with one containing appropriate family friendly stuff (grocery story, cheap restaurant, park/bicycle path, bowling alley, pool, drug store), you turn a automobile focused hell hole into a neighborhood.

I see much sadness in the group over this. I don’t see that....yes, it’s ugly to look at from the air, but residents don’t see this. Besides, if you were to just stack these houses up, you would have an apartment building that might have a few architectural distinctions at ground level, but the rest of it would be duplex apartments, except WITHOUT THE GARAGES! Yes, folks, they would have to park their cars in a big pit in the ground...much less pleasant than having your own garage!

The uniformity of the buildings is probably better for the environment, though, compared to a menagerie of unique homes. The cookie-cutter construction is likely more efficient, and the grid layout probably makes water/energy/waste pipelines more efficient as well. And if any repairs are needed, it would be cheaper and easier to produce new parts, because everything is the same.

How many people walk into the wrong houses thinking it is theirs! Lol We done a few of these type of developments years ago, we have better planning rules now, but do cringe when I drive round the old ones and get lost due to no distinguishing characteristics.

Not all of Dubi is pretty/up scale/wealthy. As a matter of fact, there is much more of this than the other.

This reminds me of a scene in the book "Wrinkle of Time" when they land on Camazotz.

Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes all the same, There's a red one and a red one, and a red one and a red one. All made out of ticky-tacky and they all look just the same

I could see how easily it would be to go to the wrong home. At the entrance you'd have to have a very specific symbol

Solutions might include:

  • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
  • Involve local community in local government;
  • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
  • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
  • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

Ultimately, cities can bring us obstacles and opportunities as well as freedom and captivity, and it's up to us to get the most out of them.

And none of these fools has the sense to even consider that bathing in industrial waste speeds up your reincarnation process.
