Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

  • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
  • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
  • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
  • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
  • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
  • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
  • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

It's Baffling How Fast It Changes

It's Baffling How Fast It Changes

Solutions might include:

  • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
  • Involve local community in local government;
  • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
  • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
  • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

Ultimately, cities can bring us obstacles and opportunities as well as freedom and captivity, and it's up to us to get the most out of them.

Its not a nuclear cooling tower. It is for a heating, electric and hotwater generating plant ( TETS in Russian) most are coal or gas powered and that is for releasing steam.

Reminds me of Haiti a bit. Cinder block structures (most without electric and running water) are built on top of each other a bit haphazardly. If you are fortunate enough (wealthy), your place is at the top of the heap. The poorer people live at the bottom and when the intense tropical rains hit, all the trash and whatnot run to the bottom. That trip made me truly grateful for what I have.

Yeah, next time you have a beef with your local development authority over their rules & regs - remember this, and be thankful they knocked you back because you wanted to put up a garage 11 inches inside the minimum distance from your neighbour’s house. This is what happens with no city planning department (or, with one too poor/ineffective/corrupt to enforce the regulations they might have.)

Yeah !! But for how long ? What is in stored for the future generations to come ? Because each year the population is more larger than the last from people migrating from other countries trying to escape from counties such as these to live the American dream and people keep having large families like 5 to 10 kids before long America is going to be like those places their trying to escape from.

Stairs, it is a true labyrinth and each staircase or corridor has its own gang of thugs who ask for tolls, the police have never entered and will never enter, the few businesses that are there charge stratospheric prices because everything has to be climbed on foot and because the thugs do not let anyone loaded with merchandise pass without charging them.

Petare is to be considered a city within the suburbs of Caracas, Venezuela, as it is divided into 100’s of neighborhoods. The narrow, nameless streets leave no room for visitors, making it an impregnable stronghold. Since cities altitude of 1000 meters, one of the few ways to access it is by Metrocable: a cable car that departs from the center of Caracas, and takes pedestrians to the highest points of the mountain. This type of transportation very common in the large mountain metropolises of Latin America. Petare is the “home” of organized criminal gangs and constantly fighting each other, it is where the reign of crime is accentuated without restraint Survival is the daily challenge of the slum inhabitants: they live in extreme poverty in a country that can no longer provide a reliable source of water or electricity. Some sectors of the Petare slum remain without water for periods of days on end, and blackouts rage nationwide, leaving Venezuela without electricity. .

itz a slum in Venezuela so its hardly going to be anything other than an eyesore is it. And yes,despite having many amenitie, it is a slum run by criminal gangs because the Venezuan government are essentially useless and corrupt. This isnt a dystopian vision: this is lack of government, regulations and oversight . . . . . yeah, okay: its dystopian but UNREGULATED dystopianism.

I know Mississippi is at the top of every “BAD” list the States has - to the rest of the world, we are all fat, get pregnant by our first cousins by the age of 14, and can’t spell “I,” - but looking at most of these photos makes me happy, happy, happy, to be in Mississippi! And humble, too. I have always told my children that very few people in the US (ages 60 and below) know what true poverty is, maybe I don’t either. Is living like this a result of poverty? Is this supposed to be preferable to living in a rural area? Is it a result of overcrowding due to rapid growth?

Both parties' politicians care about themselves, their money and their power. They are all happy to let 'the people' argue amongst ourselves about trivial matters while the politicians of both parties collect $$. Do you really think there is an American politician that really cares how poor people in Venezuela are living?

Blame your government’s. This is their fault . They buy rubbish from countries and do not dispose of it correctly.

There was a whole BP post about this. A rail company owns most of the land so no-one can do anything.

In my country the biggest highway is 3 lanes. No city has more than 3 lanes. And we consider it an achievement. I am amazed at this picture honestly!

I will never understand the lure of Dubai, it's a giant soulless shopping mall for rich people. They can have it, it's tacky and ugly.

Again context is great. This was done to facilitate troop movements quickly in and out of the capital which proved vital in WWII as the soldiers from Siberia crossed Red Square in the May Day parades and went straight to the front lines to repel the Nazis. The French similarly built huge boulevards in Paris to facilitate troop movements and to keep people from being able to build barricades, which is a French national tradition.
