Recently, Reddit user u/0_7_0 decided to find out what are the prime examples of common sense.

On July 13, they made a post on r/AskReddit, asking people "What is one 'unwritten rule' that you believe everyone should know and follow?" And it blew up.

As of this article, u/0_7_0's question has received over 3,400 comments, many of which are valuable tidbits we all should listen to. Here are some of the most upvoted ones.

I went to pick up a friend on a night out. Called him when we arrived, said he'd be down in a moment. 15 mins later still nothing. Called him again and he said he was going to come down after watching Buffy. Told him he'd have to get the train and drove off.

Except in handicapped spaces(well not in the spaces directly. You know) because I appreciate a well placed cart to grab onto while I wobble in.

In many markets or stores here in italy, to uae a cart you have to put in a 50c or 1 euro coin. I assure you, nobody ever forgets to put it back

That is why Germany introduced the "coin lock" for shopping carts ... with resounding success. Even though you can get free plastic or metal trolley chips at the checkout in almost every supermarket by now... the trolleys are brought back anyway.

But Germans love rules and follow them even if no one is around (jaywalking). It's a completely different culture/ mindset.

This is why 'deposit to use' trolleys should be mandatory at every store, u want ur money back then u have to put it back. And it would also reduce the amount of carts being dumped in rivers too.

We have a Aldi where I live. It costs $.25 to take a cart out and you get they back when you return it. Some people are still idiots and don't return it so free quarters.

Sometimes if you have children that can be really hard to do. When I moved here there was a lady that stole a baby out of the car while her mom was taking the cart to the spot directly across from her car. My kids are autistic so there were times when I was unable to take it back, but I always made sure to put it propped up so it didn't roll into anyone's car

That's so weird. We usually take our kids with us when returning the cart and then walk back to the (locked) car. I find it really interesting that this seems to be such a crazy context for other people. Unload, return cart, take kid, walk back to car. Unless someone is seriously disabled, a little walk will do anyone good.

There is a theory that you can tell the quality of life of a community by looking at the carts/trolleys in the neighborhood market. If you are looking to move into a community, check out the local mart to see if people are happy living there. More carts = more crime (littering, violent crime, and white collar crime all higher). More carts = more HOA complaints (only mow your lawn because someone makes you). More carts = more noise complaints (police have to get involved to turn down a radio). This appears to be true across demographics (religion, political party, income, etc) . My unsupported theory is that putting back carts are a sign of empathy.

I wish they would design parking lots to accommodate a cart beside each car space. I have mobility issues (as well as others I've seen post on here) and it would be SO deluxe, to not have to stumble my way to the cart corral (which may or may not be empty)..... Yes, I use a cane, so it's not *critical*.... but it would be *convenient*.

To make yourself less angry about this, imagine the person who abandoned their cart just got a phone call that a close friend or family member is in the hospital. It'll save you some brain cells. That's said. I return my cart to the door 90% of the time and 10% I'm lazy and only take it to the corral

I have a mobility impairment, so when I'm using an electric cart and I'm by myself I can't bring it back inside. I park it in an area of the handicapped that doesn't get in the way of other cars parking in the handicapped area. I also let a cart attendant know that I have done that. Nothing worse than a blistering hot or frigid cold seat.

Yes! Please! I've read many reasons why people don't put them back and the only reasons I've found that are fair (in most circumstances) is if you're disabled in some way (that makes it hard or impossible for you to take it back), pregnant or have a child/children and don't want to leave them/have to juggle everything with them.

I'm disabled and always return the trolley. Usually the disabled spaces are nearest the shop and, so far, I've found them to always be near a place to return the trolley. If I can get round the shop with the trolley I make sure I can get the trolley back. I suppose if I've exhausted myself somehow then I could ask someone to take it back for me and they can keep my £1 (which is the returnable deposit for the trolley in a lot of UK supermarkets). Though if I've got to that bad a state am I really going to be safe to drive? When you are disabled you have to think ahead about these things. You're being very considerate and I commend you for that but many people use these as excuses because it sounds reasonable. My mother managed to do it with five small children (two years between us in turn) and no parent and child parking bays.

That's just lazy. If 3 minutes to return a cart might spoil it, then your 30 minutes? Car ride most definately will. Our ice is much softer then yours (you do not have to let it sit on the counter for x mins so you can use a spoon on it) and it does not spoil! That's no excuse!

I dunno… I feel like the cart thing is a bit like the self-checkouts. It's work that someone could be doing. Instead, we're doing the work ourselves, for free, and the beneficiary is the grocery store company. I'd rather the company paid people to take care of the parking lot area.

I put them in car corrals when they are closely situated. I do not drag them all the way back into a store. They have employees for that. If no corrals are convenient, I park the cart between my space and the one directly in front of me, never on the side. Cart corrals should be smaller and more numerous. Parking lots ought to marked to take them into account, rather than stores using a parking space (two in most instances). Grocery stores already have people brainwashed to ring up and bag their groceries... without even any discount for the labor savings they get. What's next? Getting customers to stock the shelves for them?

Well, not since the pandemic. Some stores want the dirty shopping carts in the dirty shopping cart spot, so they can be sprayed down or wiped down before the next person uses it.

Well, I must admit to being a little conflicted on this. For the people who round up stray trollies/carts, at least it's a job. Shitty pay, I'm sure, but a job. Am I right or wrong?

It's true that, in a sense, leaving trollies astray has created jobs. But, if that's the case, you could say that criminals have created jobs for the police.

If you're sharing the bill and you clearly spent more than everyone else.. . Make sure you insist on paying the difference.

People Are Sharing "Unwritten Rules" Of Life That Everyone Should Be Aware Of (40 Answers) When you are shopping/looking for clothes and suddenly decide you don't want it anymore, put it back where you found it. Don't just dump it somewhere — it makes life hard for both workers who are cleaning up and the customers looking for something to buy.

Actually not, in a lot of stores you have a designated area near the cabins where you should leave them. Especially during the pandeminc it is not so smart to put your clothes back with the others after you have tried them on, they could carry nasty things.

If you make an appointment and can’t keep it, cancel or let someone know. I manage sales for a car dealership and we thrive on appointments. We understand things come up, just let us know. That simple gesture goes a long way.

Car salesmen can be very pushy though! My mum ended up making an appointment because the person talking to her wouldn't take no for an answer but she had no intention of buying the car and didn't attend. I understand what you're saying but she didn't want to have to ring and engage with him again, having been intimidated into making the initial appointment.

I believe it's called a conversation. People have been having them for a very VERY long time. People need to stop making everything about them.

People Are Sharing "Unwritten Rules" Of Life That Everyone Should Be Aware Of (40 Answers) If you are going to talk with someone about your problems/issues, do a quick check-in first. Like, 'Are you in a good space for me to talk this out with you?' I’ve used it a few times, and I think just the basic courtesy of asking is such a relief to people!

I don't know about other cultures but in the UK this is pointless advice. There is NO Way anyone would respond to this by saying "actually no I'm in a s**t mood" we'd just grin and bear it either way.

The last of any food/drink is reserved for whoever bought said food/drink

Always leave stuff cleaner than it was when you got to it (campsites, AirBnBs, anything shared with people really)

With the ridiculous cleaning fees that Airbnb's often charge, I'm not certain why I should be doing the cleaning for them.

If someone can't fix an aspect of their appearance in five minutes or less, don't mention it.

If you’re about to turn the light on in a dark room and someone is there, you have to announce what you’re about to do so the person doesn’t get a surprise. I feel like it’s really disrespectful to turn the light on without announcing it

Don't bombard people with a ton of taking when they obviously feel tired and overwhelmed, they are having enough trouble with their own stuff, to deal with all of your stuff.

You need to speak up if you’re tired. Not put it on others, you may think it’s obvious to other people and they may not be seeing what you think they’re seeing

Someone on a budget wrote this. If you're offered the last beer, you get the last beer.
