If you’ve been with Bored Panda long enough, you might be able to recall quite a few of our articles featuring strange apartments all over the world. For instance, a few months ago, we wrote an article about this bizarre $1.5 million apartment in London that has a pool sitting in the middle of it. We’ve also discussed this odd loft apartment located in New York that has a shower installed in the kitchen. Today, it’s finally time to add another weird apartment to our unofficial strange apartment list.

Jamie Wilkes was in the midst of an apartment viewing when he accidentally discovered that the property he was inspecting had a truly peculiar exit to the back garden. The man came across a bizarre set of stairs behind a cabinet door in a kitchen that otherwise looked completely normal. “Viewed a flat today and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop thinking about the back door,” Jamie wrote in the tweet featuring the video.

Basically instead of leaving it open they just slapped a countertop on top of it to have more prep space. It feels more like a tiny kitchen solution than a secret entryway thing.
only thing i would add would be a slide lock for the one person who would come up the stairs while prepping food. other than that, i think it's genius.
My guess: how to prevent children go douwn the stairs and maybe get injured, and at the same time save space. Also a great escape exit when the zombies come.
Servant staircase. I love it. Could be turned in to a tiny little cubby. I just wouldn't tell anyone about it.
I think it's a great solution to otherwise having wasted space over the staircase or not using the stairs. Best of both worlds and doubles the kitchen counter space - no mean feat in London. I agree with Patti who commented about having a latch or lock to avoid nasty accidents.
There's nothing creepy about this. It looks to be a kitchen entry for servants/delivery people, so they don't have to drag deliveries/shopping through the front of the house. Also useful for taking the dog out to the garden to pee, leaving wet shoes & boots, etc. If I had this I'd open it up for the light and use it every single day. Not creepy; enviable!
I really wish that there was some provenance on this. Curious exactly why it would exist. Guesses and speculation are cool but really, was it bootlegging, an entrance to torment other residents with "ghosts", etc. Does it lock appropriately? Same key as front door? Imagine living there without being aware that someone has access to your home without your knowledge. Creepy to say the least.
That looks like something off of Law and Order. Like the guy gets away and they don't know how until they search the house and find the secret passage.
My grandparents in rural Denmark had a cupboard in the kitchen with stairs leading down into a cellar for food storage. If I remember correctly the house was built in 1935 and sold in the early nineties without having been altered. I would love to own that house today. :-)
While you all are worried about the stairs, I'm worried about the fact that both ends of the kitchen appear to be dead ends and that stairwell seems to be the only way in or out.
I'm betting it's an old servants' entrance that was blocked over, forgotten, and these aren't that uncommon in older areas. Use a measuring tape. If outside and inside don't match? You *may* have a wee bit of a surprise....
