We all have our little quirks... some are more astounding than others. While most humans tend to have commonly shared features like 12 pairs of ribs, or eyes that are typically brown, green, or blue, sometimes features diverge a bit more uniquely. Much like all species on this planet, it is not impossible to encounter variations that simply blow our minds.
In a recent Reddit post that discussed weird body features, Redditors shared some of their most striking peculiarities. As each commenter shared their individual—oftentimes confounding—anomalies, a shared community began to build and others helped to offer a bit of insight on the possible 'why' and 'how' their quirks may exist. Some (possible) explanations were given, while some still remained a mystery.

Insane hearing. I can tell when a car starts a block down the road. When the army base is doing artillary drills 30 miles away. When there's a mouse running through the kitchen. When a squirrel is running through the driveway and crunching leaves.
It makes sleeping a bit difficult. But going to a casino is like a freaking acid trip.
Because of a blood disorder I have extremely acidic tears.
My face swells, burns, and I get hives or an allergic reaction.
A couple tears is annoying. Serious crying will eat away at my contacts, I’ll have to use cold compresses, and take antihistamines

I have Arnold's cough reflex. Anytime I stick a q tip in my left ear it triggers my gag reflex. Supposedly it only affects 2% of people
Edit: maybe I shouldn't have used the term gag reflex as I've never thrown up from it. Rather a very aggressive cough like I'm trying to hack something up uncontrollably. Sorry for any confusion. My fiance always thinks it sounds like I'm throwing up that's why I went straight to gag reflex.

Yea, when I get Q-tipped I always cough aggressively but I thought it was normal.

Same, but only in one ear. It's really strange when I need to clean that ear, lol. I can also "rumble" my inner ears (both of them), too, fwiw. The only way I can clean that ear is if I press "up" or "down" kind of hard because pressing too softly results in triggering the coughing fit.
Didn't know this was a thing, just thought my body was wired weirdly lol Makes my throat tickle and I start couching. Also, really hot drink/food makes my back hurt.
Sunlight makes me sneeze, plucking my eyebrows makes me sneeze, cleaning my ears makes me cough! I always knew my brain had many cross-wires 🤣😂🤣😂✌🏻

I have something where certain coughs lead to vomiting. Depends on what I'm coughing up - usually nothing - equals sudden nausea. But if it's something - from a cold, for instance - not a problem.

My eyes are symmetrical to the thousandth of an inch. My optometrist said it was rare. Everyone varies a little bit.

Apparently it's has an actual medical term (Pectus Excavatum) which is most definitely not a spell out of Harry Potter and way more common than I realized. It even has it's own subreddit (r/pectusexcavatum)
There's an opposite condition where the chest convexes outwards (Pectus Carinatum). If the 2 hug, they fuse into one superbeing.
There are surgeries to repair them but hurt like hell and have a long recovery time. Only recommended if it is a problem in your daily life.
Common uses include cereal bowl (not that I have done it), cell phone holder, candy dish, cuddle spot.

My knees makes a lot of noises when I'm crouching down.

Me too. I thought everyone could do it? It feels like a muscle right inside of my ear, but not part of the ear maybe? I can only hold it for like 3 or 4 seconds at a time and still hear the noise. For people this doesn't happen too, the noise is just like being on a plane that just landed and is slowing down, but a bit quieter.
My fingers can bend backwards & i have a weak muscle in my eye which is when I create suction in my mouth my eyelid goes up fsr

Really, really high bone density. X-ray images look like cartoon skeletons. No one can tell me exact what’s going on.
I have grey eyes. No color. Like a black and white eye.
I also have, if I understood the cardiologist correctly, 20 pacemaker nodes? Which … could be good? Or bad? The doctor didn’t offer an opinion one way or the other.

Grey to Grey-green to blue. To me, in the mirror in my bathroom, they just look grey. But that could be just the way I see them. AFAIK I’m not colorblind. (I pass the tests).
Swimming: I can swim. I cannot float - not even when I hold my breath.
I don’t have any x-ray pics - and hopefully I won’t have the occasion to get any anytime soon. But in the off chance that I do, I’ll post it.
The Game is going to flag me for talking about my bones - and I’m going to break everything, all at once.
Update 2: a few of y’all have mentioned Wolff-Parkinson-White and after reading up on it a little, given that I had some premature ventricular contractions in my late teens, (much older now) and my heart rate has always been a little higher than average, regardless of how fit I was - it never seemed to go up or down much - I’m going to go get checked out. Better safe than sorry.
Wow! The no floating part must be really hard! But since you have high bone density does that mean they don’t break as easily?
I developed arthritis at 16 years old, also I have a massive a*s for a dude. Double cheeked up.
My ears are asymmetrical, and I didn’t realize it until my late teens, after which it caused me great angst.
I have ultra low heart rate. It was in the 50s anyway, but with some endurance training its in the 30s now.
Ive been multiple tested by cardios, 24h holter, all good no pauses or irregularities im good to go. When im in good shape im at 35-36bpm while awake, and down to 30 during sleep.
Maybe if i get in a good shape again, i ll ask for a new holter to see if i break 30bpm during sleep and touch 29 or so.

I don't take any meds that affect my HR. I have a very mild Hypertension that is controlled with (ARBs). Not beta blockers. This is the only med i'm taking. This hasn't affected my HR in any way. My HR was already ultra low before starting the meds.
In fact now in the summer, I'm completely stopped the meds because BP drops naturally.
I don't have any other health condition (appart from orthopedic injuries). I'm 41m and as far as i can remember my HR is as described.
I am mainly a runner but i also swim as secondary or recovery. I do some strength training now and then. I'm not super good runner, just a 40:00 at 10k, but with very little training and i'm always battling with orthopedic injuries.
My max HR is around 175, i always use a HR strap when running (it measures electric signals), i dont trust the wrist optical HR monitors, they are not very accurate.
Needless to say i have never ever taken any other substance-drugs-steroids-hormones etc.
All my hair on my body is brown except in my armpits, it's blonde.
My father had dark blonde hair but when he grew a beard it came in red. My aunt said we have some redheaded ancestors.
I’m basically allergic to heat (urticaria)
I can kind of „dislocate“ my thumbs without touching them.

I have pretty small hands compared to my body
A friend of mine too. It looks like a child’s hand. First time I noticed was when she put one of her hands close to her face. It seemed someone else’s. It was a bit creepy.
I have an asymmetrical ribcage
Mentioned in earlier post but my rib cage is uneven. Left side grew normal but right side did not. It's so hard to explain. Hate it

I have a rare intersex condition known as ambiguous genitalia: I was born with a penis, ovotestes (look like testicles but function as both testicles and ovaries), a vagina, and a uterus. The two systems can operate separately with conscious effort, though by default they work in tandem. Unlike most born with this condition, I was not forcibly reassigned female surgically at birth; they just grafted skin from my thigh over the vulva and left the systems otherwise untouched.

My daughter has zero hearing apparatus - her ears are completely hollow. It took forever for her to learn how to walk, but her visual skills are such that she's a good dancer. She also saves me a fortune when I buy her a ride pass at the fair, because she has no organs of balance to get nauseous or vertigo, she can ride the most nightmarish rides all day over and over and she never ever throws up.
I have hazel eyes that can turn to blue-green. They can be grey, blue, or teal. Match what I am wearing. I have never heard of anyone else having that color of eyes. People think I'm wearing colored contacts and want to know where I got them. The blue can be regular blue or a brilliant light blue if I get angry.
My Dad has eyes like this, they turn bright green when he cries, which thank God i've only ever seen him do once. Do you have any Celtic blood in your ancestry, we are Welsh? :)

Wisdom teeth or just extra teeth in general? (I had 7 wisdom teeth myself and my dental surgeon said "jokingly" that I'd have died by age 25 if I'd lived before modern dentistry. Thanks, doc!)

I have an incredible extensive case of fibromyalgia, diagnosed at a young age. Due to the degree of pain I normally experience most pain signals don't register. I'm not allowed to fry things (don't notice spitting oil burns) and I have to check my extremities for injuries daily.
I also have swamp feet/hands, which isn't fun honestly. I'd be less annoyed if it came with bonus gills. Pain-62f34...984168.jpg

I can flare my nostrils which isn't to rare I don't think but most of my friends can't. And I might have heterochromia because the outer ring of my eye is green and the inner ring is a golden brown colour. They look more goldy brown than green in some lights and more spotted green in others. Also I can make a rumbling noise happen in my ears by focusing on it but it makes me yawn, I used to do it when I was a kid when I didn't want to listen to someone

I have heterochromia. My left eye is dark, kind of muddy green, and my right eye is hazel/green. It stands out more in sunlight but my right eye usually appears to be much darker.
I yawn constantly when I'm nervous. It's uncontrollable. At some points I'm not even breathing in or out it's just the yawning motion with my jaw.
Me too. And I have a kiddo who yawns when they sing, and I always yawn when reciting the pledge of allegiance (not on purpose I should add; it’s a reflex).

The relaxed position of my eyelids is in the open position meaning I sleep with my eyes open. Also, I use to sit up in bed while sleeping, with my eyes open, and look around the room. A grew out of it in college from sleeping on the bottom bunk. Many nights I woke up from smacking my head on the top bunk.

It's very common to not have identical length of your two legs. If it's not affecting your gait and life? Relax. And don't let anyone tell you it's misalignment unless they can prove it!

I don't know if it's normal, but I too can "feel" when someone gets close to touching my face - forehead or really anywhere on my face - I can absolutely "feel" it, almost like sensing some kind of "energy" coming off the person's hand/fingers XD

I can “swallow my tongue”. I’ve freaked out a few dentists :) FWIW, I don’t actually “swallow” it - I don’t have much of a frenum, so my tongue is extremely mobile, and I can insert it into the nasal cavity above the soft palate. It’s not at all painful (but it looks gnarly). This isn’t exactly ‘scientific’, but since I learned how to do this (back in high school), I’ve had a LOT fewer colds and respiratory infections, I think because I’ve developed the habit of keeping my nasal cavity free of mucus. I know this is gross, sorry.
I can wiggle/vibrate my eyes in their sockets without moving my head/anything else. Never met anyone else who can do the same. Absolutely loved freaking out my sister/friends/relatives/everyone with it when I was a kid XD

I had to have all of my bicuspids removed at a young age because my adult teeth were way too big for my mouth size, and then as soon as my wisdom teeth started to appear they needed to be removed because they were freakishly big.

I have a "Darwin's point" on one of my ears, my friend called it my elf ear ☺️
I have dense bones. Now I'm talking foot get run over by car and be unaffected type dense. Don't ask how I know, I don't want to talk about it. I can dislocate my thumb, back (again, don't ask), hips (it's considered cheating at limbo) and just about everything in my body, it's called being hypermobile and double jointed. I have a low core temperature as well as I naturally high heart rate and blood pressure. Healing? My body fixed a dislocated knee in 2 days, like my friend saw it happen, there is a photo. Mum took me to the ER because she said my knee looked wrong, doctor took an x-ray, was shocked because of my bone density and because it was healed. Two days, it took two days to heal. My friends are jealous. I would also like to add I have an extremely high pain tolerance and can't feel temperature and never developed canine teeth. I have at least 4 people call me an alien. I call myself ultra unique. This may all sound fake but it's all real.
You sound exactly like my son: dense bones, hypermobile, no canines, weird thumbs, low normal temperature, etc. Only difference is the high BP and heart rate. I have never encountered this collection of oddities in anyone else, although my other son's father came from a village in Switzerland where the no canines gene is common (no genetic connection to the son without canine teeth).

I can bend my knees backwards. I thought this was a neat trick till an xray or whatever it's called revealed I'm actually missing a couple tendons. Age is going to be fun. I also used to be able to bend my spine completely backwards. Don't show this off in your younger years or the older ones will be full of suffering. And my favourite thing? My eyes change colours. Various shades of brown, greens and blues have been seen. Apparently brown means I'm in a bad mood.
I can identify with the poster that can't feel temperature anymore. I had chemo ten years ago (still clean today), but it altered my temperature sensitivities. I'm always cold now, and I can't really feel heat through my hands. Can't tell you how many times I've burned myself over the years.
I have dimples on the back of my shoulders. A lot of personal think they're weird. I thought everyone had them.

My organs were formed in different places compared to everyone else. I found this out when my appendix burst and the doctor was convinced it was a urine infection for two weeks. I eventually went for a second opinion and was sent straight to the hospital and rushed into surgery.

I can give myself goosebumbs and butterflies. Goosebumps I make happen with an eye movement. Butterflies, all I have to do is picture blood rushing to my belly.
Most of the stuff on the right side of my body is abnormal. Bad ear, weepy eye, bad pancreas, bad back, bad kidney, leg is shorter than on left, foot and Achilles are bad. It's like my right side didn't quite develop enough.
oh my gosh. my teeth. so many things. 1. my teeth are freaking small. not like width but height. like imagine a 7 year olds teeth but wider. that’s my teeth. it was super hard for them to put braces on me. 2. i’m missing an adult tooth. i had the baby tooth but not the adult one. because of this the orthodontist asked if i wanted braces to move my teeth over to fill the space or invisalign and a fake tooth. i said invisalign. they gave me braces. then invisalign. then both. 3. ok there is this thing called like weak or soft enamel or something like that. i have that, so does my brother. but we have it really really bad. basically, no matter how good we take care of our teeth we will get cavities. on our charts at the dentists that show our teeth, showing fillings in pink and teeth in white, there is more pink than white. also i can’t breath through my nose
I had an optic nerve pit on my retina, which was leaking brain fluid into my eye. I was the first child to ever have laser eye surgery, because they needed to seal it. Unfortunately because I was the first they didn't know how strong to set the laser and I had to go back in for a second surgery because it wasn't strong enough.
I can hear those things people have to get cats off their lawn. It's like one of those flashbang grenades from Call of Duty but really quiet. I thought it was tinnitus.

I have a low core temperature as well as I naturally high heart rate and blood pressure. Healing? My body fixed a dislocated knee in 2 days, like my friend saw it happen, there is a photo. Mum took me to the ER because she said my knee looked wrong, doctor took an x-ray, was shocked because of my bone density and because it was healed. Two days, it took two days to heal. My friends are jealous. I would also like to add I have an extremely high pain tolerance and can't feel temperature and never developed canine teeth. I have at least 4 people call me an alien. I call myself ultra unique. This may all sound fake but it's all real.
You sound exactly like my son: dense bones, hypermobile, no canines, weird thumbs, low normal temperature, etc. Only difference is the high BP and heart rate. I have never encountered this collection of oddities in anyone else, although my other son's father came from a village in Switzerland where the no canines gene is common (no genetic connection to the son without canine teeth).
Load More Replies... I can bend my knees backwards. I thought this was a neat trick till an xray or whatever it's called revealed I'm actually missing a couple tendons. Age is going to be fun. I also used to be able to bend my spine completely backwards. Don't show this off in your younger years or the older ones will be full of suffering. And my favourite thing? My eyes change colours. Various shades of brown, greens and blues have been seen. Apparently brown means I'm in a bad mood.
I can identify with the poster that can't feel temperature anymore. I had chemo ten years ago (still clean today), but it altered my temperature sensitivities. I'm always cold now, and I can't really feel heat through my hands. Can't tell you how many times I've burned myself over the years.
I have dimples on the back of my shoulders. A lot of personal think they're weird. I thought everyone had them.

Most of the stuff on the right side of my body is abnormal. Bad ear, weepy eye, bad pancreas, bad back, bad kidney, leg is shorter than on left, foot and Achilles are bad. It's like my right side didn't quite develop enough.
oh my gosh. my teeth. so many things. 1. my teeth are freaking small. not like width but height. like imagine a 7 year olds teeth but wider. that’s my teeth. it was super hard for them to put braces on me. 2. i’m missing an adult tooth. i had the baby tooth but not the adult one. because of this the orthodontist asked if i wanted braces to move my teeth over to fill the space or invisalign and a fake tooth. i said invisalign. they gave me braces. then invisalign. then both. 3. ok there is this thing called like weak or soft enamel or something like that. i have that, so does my brother. but we have it really really bad. basically, no matter how good we take care of our teeth we will get cavities. on our charts at the dentists that show our teeth, showing fillings in pink and teeth in white, there is more pink than white. also i can’t breath through my nose
I had an optic nerve pit on my retina, which was leaking brain fluid into my eye. I was the first child to ever have laser eye surgery, because they needed to seal it. Unfortunately because I was the first they didn't know how strong to set the laser and I had to go back in for a second surgery because it wasn't strong enough.
