You see, while becoming a doctor takes enormous amounts of grueling hard work, talent, and knowledge, not everyone in the field has a sympathetic bedside manner. One Redditor who goes by the handle MCKlassik decided to find out about off-putting experiences people lived through at their most vulnerable. They reached out to members of the Ask Reddit community and raised the question: “What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you?”

Wasn’t a doctor but a nurse. While taking my history she asked if I was on any medication. I told her birth control & an anti-depressant. She looked at me and said “You’re so young, what do you have to be depressed about?” I thought about it and realized I had nothing to be depressed about and was cured! Thanks random nurse! /s

That's awful. Sounds similar to my experience when I kept being told that low back pain is normal and to stop slouching etc. After finally getting an MRI it turns out I had a disc herniation. Two actually but one was way worse.
My GP arranged straight away for me to get an MRI and i was quickly diagnosed. Not much they could do with the various issues found (painkillers, physio etc can't help much in my case) but at least we knew why i was in pain.

I had to argue with my doctor to get an MRI for my back pain and he finally agreed, you'd think I was asking him for heroin or something. Turns out I have 5 herniated discs and degenerative disc disease.
Being a woman, the next best thing is being told...you should lose weight!! But in the US getting diagnosed is a hit or miss anyway. 5K into various testing...oh, you have a cold lol

Sue the pray for medical malpractice. A little friend of mine was actually told her back pain was all in her mind. She was back and forth to the doctor for years. Not once was she sent for an X-ray or scan. It was cancer in her spine and by the time she did get checked ,,, she went private,,, the cancer was all through her.
always make the doctor write in your file that your request for further examination was denied on their behalf. If they're on the hook for it, they'll make sure there's really nothing wrong with you. (my doc told me it was just a cold and sent me home but i said i wanted to do at least the blood test, but they said that wouldn't be neccessary, it's the season y'know cold, so i told her can they then write that in the file and i didn't move from the seat until they decided they're not going to risk and they did send me to do the blood test-i had pneumonia, few days later i'd be dead without the medicine)

I have not 1 but Two prolapsed lumbar discs & an inoperable Synovial cyst on my spine. I was told among other things that it was Muscle Spasms, I was a malingerer, a drug seeker & it was all in my head. Took me 7 years & 6 different doctors before one would refer me for an MRI. it was so long before diagnosis that I’ve had spontaneous spinal fusion & it’s too late for any corrective surgery.
Not every graduate can be the top of the class...there has to be a bottom, too...this goes for every degree, doctors, nurses, therapists...
Spent my teens are early 20s being told that I was too young for back pain. I finally convinced a doctor when I was 24 to get x-rays, mild scoliosis. Not severe enough to need surgery but can be managed with exercise. 10 years of exercise, daily pain, guess what isn't mild anymore and has impacted other body parts too.
I have a back problem, but they never have time to see me when it's acting up. Did scans, etc. Said I have a minuscule amount of arthritis and shouldn't be complaining. Waited for it to get really bad again and went to ER. Got sent for PT for a pinched nerve without them running any tests. Did 5 hours cutting the property on the tractor the other week and had to be helped into the house. Back was out for almost 2 days, specialist didn't have time to see me. This isn't arthritis.
I know someone who was having eye trouble on and off. I can't remember what exactly, but they were misdiagnosed 5 times and went blind in one eye and only just managed to save the other. A further kick in the balls was they had only just qualified and landed their dream job. But it was one that needed a clean bill of health due to the nature of the job. Devastated ain't the word.
Doc I feel like I'm losing my mind, everything hurts all the time and I have this huge lump on my neck. Doc's response: the lump is prolly a bone (tho it was squishy) and your prolly lying bout symptoms. Nurse pract. Month later: we need to get your thyroid checked immediately. Guess what wasn't lying about symptoms and diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. When brought up with my doc she got Mad at me... Thank You To All Nurses❣
Ugh, so f*****g similar to the trajectory of my medical journey as well. I have spinal stenosis, pinched discs, mild scoliosis, and my one hip is literally situated 1" higher than the other. I told doctors all throughout my late teens and 20s that I was hurting, that it wasn't the same as other people my age, that I could go to make a very normal movement and something would *snap* and I'd be hunched over for the next week recovering...none of it mattered. Meanwhile at the very same time this was going on for me, doctors were handing out oxycontin to anyone with $250 and no medical history but I couldn't be treated for my issues. Went to a pain management office at 19 and had an MRI done - doctor told me he didn't see a reason & wanted me to take 9 (!) Neurontin a day for it, which did nothing. Fast forward 10 years later, same office different doctor. He looks at the very same MRI & diagnosed my stenosis, wanted a more current MRI. I cried so much that day cuz I was finally believed.
I had a doctor who misdiagnosed an enlarged spleen. I KNEW he had misdiagnosed it and went back and asked for a second opinion. He took my file from the second doctor, came in to the examining room and spent 20 minutes haranguing me on how DARE I second guess him and who the hello am I to doubt his diagnosis?! I was too poor at the time to go to a different doctor, so I sucked it up. Doctors who value their own ego over the patient are the worst. So are doctors who devalue women's symptoms because they are "hysterical".
My surgeon had the PM&R doc come ot the OR to see how bad my back was when they finally did surgery. He asked the PM&R doc how I ever walked into his office! (All in same practice!) He had to fuse 4 vertebrae together to stabilize my back, it was so bad! The PM&R doc kept telling me I was overreacting and that was 2006! I only had two years to complain about my back. It's getting better but it's no where near better.
I had a herniated disc in my neck once, probably from skating when I was younger and it was ridiculous pain and it was sorted within a couple of months, I can't imagine living with that pain for this long, I couldn't grip anything properly with my left hand either, it was terrible.
I went through years of worsening pain and finally had a triple lumbar fusion in 2019. Doctor said it was so much worse than he ever imagined.. pain doctor used to treat me like I was med seeking and the pain wasn't that bad.. they have changed their tune.
I found out quite by accident (x-ray for a completely unrelated condition) the the disc between L4 & L5 was gone. As in it ruptured & I didn't know it. My back "went out" occasionally, so I never really thought about it. I'm almost 5/8" shorter than I used to be.
When I told my doctor that I thought I might be on the Autism/Aspergers Spectrum and did she know if there was a test I could take to find out, she frowned & said, "Why would you even want to know?! There's nothing that can be done about it if you are!"
I again realize how lucky I was when my back pain started to have a doctor that listened plus insurance that covered all the tests. I mean, back pain can be notoriously hard to completely cure and surgery is always iffy but at least I have affirmation that it's real, it has a cause, and there are things I can do to alleviate it.
TMJ pain for 12 years after being hit there by a cricket ball. 15 medical professionals...dentist, Drs, Rheumatologist, Psychiatrist...who put me in group therapy because she said I was Neurotic! Plus a few more. Finally saw an oral surgeon who knew exactly what was wrong as he had been to a seminar for TMJ problems. Multiple hairline fractures and joint had tried to repair itself...the wrong way. Surgery 5 days later for a Condyle Shave. Instant relief from my jaw freezing open and excruciating pain. 12...years...of...being...shunted around!
Got much of the same. Turns out I have sever scoliosis (like they type where you see 80-year old men hunched over). Was told nothing was wrong for years and to just lose weight. I lost the weight and surprise! It didn’t help the curve AND twist in my spine.
A friend of mine ignored back pain too long and it turned out to be pancreatic cancer. My aunt did the same and it turned out she had osteocarcoma. My wife's back pain was a kidney stone. I finally went for mine and doc told me it was muscle spasms from being too stressed out and I finally got treatment for my anxiety and panic attacks. If your back hurts, see a doctor sooner rather than later.
I went to the GP with intense backpain, pain so bad it was making me feel sick. She told me to have babies to take my mind off myself. Second opinion discovered a slipped disc...
This is exactly what has happened to me now. I thought I had kidney stones so the doctor sent me for a CT scan and urine test. Results came back ok. But instead of investigating further, the doctor said go do physio 5 times, it's only back pain and probably pulled a muscle. But I never had a fall nor injured my back and have had this ongoing pain for a year.
Nope. I have had many health issues and in each case I have received excellent care. That ranges from emergency treatment after accidents through to minor but annoying health problems. I have back pain and have had MRIs And physio and referrals every time I needed it. Same for gastric problems. You can keep your assumptions. It may be bad right now due to the devastation caused by covid but I can still see my GP and get referrals, they are just taking a few weeks longer but, again, that is for minor but annoying issues. Socialised = decent and free at the point of delivery. We will get back to pre covid standards as well. People all too happily sh-it on the NHS but half the time they are sat in ER when they could see their GP. Too many people abuse the system sadly. Still preferable.

The user revealed they got the idea to post this question and start a discussion on Ask Reddit after their friends started sharing their own unfortunate experiences with medical professionals. “[I] wanted to see if other people have similar stories,” they told Bored Panda.
However, the user did not expect the thread to blow up as much as it did. As of today, the user’s post has amassed nearly 30K upvotes with more than 19K commenters opening up about the inappropriate doctors they ever had the “pleasure” to deal with.
“In terms of going viral, Ask Reddit is hit or miss because so many people post questions every day in hopes of making it to the top. I understand where they’re coming from because Ask Reddit is one of the biggest subreddits on the platform. So I was quite surprised that my post just happened to stand out enough for people to give their stories and to respond to others,” MCKlassik said.
Went in for a lung infection. Was told that my asthma was caused by my breasts being “too big” and they were crushing my lungs and that’s the cause of asthma in women.

I was in the ER in the last few years, and the subject of my weight came up. I've struggled with my weight my entire life.
ER doctor: "Have you tried pushaways?"
Me: "What are those?"
ER doctor: "When you push away from the table. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA."
He thought it was the most hilarious thing any person has ever said. I can assure you it was not.
A nurse, after I requested a Benadryl for intense itching after a c-section: "I can't give you anything for random itching. You are breastfeeding and it will cause drowsiness for you and baby. You'll have to suck it up." She handed me my son from his crib-thing and told me skin-on-skin was best. I was burning up and my son, while content, wasn't latching or otherwise interested in eating. She put the crib just far enough that I couldn't move over enough to put him back. Every part of my skin burned like stinging nettles.
45 minutes later I was covered in hives, crying from hormones, itching and my pain levels and thought I was having an allergic reaction to something. My son was falling asleep on me while i was itching until my arms bled. I rang my bell. A different nurse came in and says "Oh good Lord, you are having a reaction to something! Poor thing, you look uncomfortable, let's get you sorted out!"
I asked her about breastfeeding and she's like "Baby won't starve and you won't be feeling much like feeding if you're scratching your breasts off, now will ya?"
She gave me Benadryl in my IV, and a bit of extra pain medication. I guess I had some weirdo immune response, not an actual reaction to anything like medication or whatnot. She took my son and dressed him all up in a couple outfits I brought (he was born on Hallowe'en) and kept him up at the nurses station for about 90 minutes while I slept. When my husband came up later (he was taking my older son to my brother's after grabbing him from daycare) the nurses were all taking turns holding my 8 hour-old son and I slept a solid 3 hours. I felt like a million bucks.

This thread serves as proof that some doctors can seriously cross the line, whether intentionally or not, with what they tell their patients. However, it’s important to remember that many people in the medical field are amazing at their jobs and deserve countless awards for taking care of someone else’s life. It’s reassuring to know that many doctors take extra steps to make sure our physical health and our state of being would be in a good place. MCKlassik believes that when doctors are unprofessional, they don’t do it intentionally. “Sometimes the phrase or action just slips out,” they said.
“Quite frankly, I’m not surprised that doctors can be unprofessional because doctors are human, meaning they’re not perfect,” the user added. “Sometimes a doctor’s negative emotions and comments are brought into their workday due to potential personal issues and let it impact their performance.”

At my 6 week post partum check up after a 4th degree tear. And a letter from the surgeon saying “do not examine the patient”

I was convinced I felt a lump in my testicles. The doctor couldn’t feel it. Ended up taking way longer than acceptable to get an ultra sound (roughly 6 weeks).
And yes, it turned out to be cancer.

Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer for men aged 20-35. It’s also **the most treatable form of cancer** nowadays so don’t panic if you feel a lump.
The lump itself felt like a small bb inside my testicle. Hardly noticeable. The consistency was hard and it didn’t give at all when pressed. Usually there is no pain accompanied with the tumor. I could feel it when holding my ball between my thumb and forefinger.
I should also add I had to insist that I felt something when visiting the doctor and if I hadn’t I don’t think I’d have gotten an ultrasound. If you feel something isn’t normal trust yourself.

I was looking for a surgeon for my gallstone operation and he asked what meds I was on. I mentioned my antidepressants and he started saying I didn't need to take them I just needed to pray. I was pissed and replied "I guess I'll just pray my gallstones away too then". Needless to say, I went with a different surgeon.
You can’t just “pray” depression away! I mean for some people having faith in something does help them, cause that’s what they believe in and gives them comfort. But you can’t just tell a random person to stop taking medicine that’s may or may not be working for them and pray instead!
But when patients hear highly inappropriate and extremely ignorant comments from professionals who take care of one of the most important things in their life — their health — it can easily make them feel distraught. Without trust, you have nothing, as they say. So no wonder many people turn to other doctors after living through these uncomfortable experiences, hoping to get better treatment.
We want our physicians to be personal, caring, and understanding. We wish to receive sympathetic smiles and authentic human connection. But it turns out that empathy has been significantly lacking in medicine recently. Over the past few decades, many doctors have developed a reputation for being cold.
“It’s your fault, know better next time.” This was in response to learning I was raped while drunk. She said I shouldn’t drink around friends I don’t know for positive I can trust too. Also, “You should’ve protected your virginity better. I’ve only slept with one man.”
It wasn't what was said, but I did have an appointment where the doctor just never showed up. I was in the examination room for about 45 minutes when an MA walked in and asked me what I was doing there. When I said I was waiting for the doctor, "the doctor already left! We're closing". Instead of calling the doctor back they made me schedule another appointment. I found a new office instead.
Same thing happened to me. I took off half a day from teaching for a 1:00 appointment. Sat in the examination room until 3:00, then told them I had to go pick up my daughter from school. When I returned 20 minutes later, the dr. had left for the day. I refused to pay and never went back. Also told everyone I could think of.
“Your child will never learn to read”. Said by “the best developmental doctor” at a very well known hospital about my then four year old son with Down Syndrome. This was in 2001:not 1901. After a very one sided conversation on my part that channeled Cher from the movie Mask, the doctor left the room and I was then escorted out by security. Parents believe these “professionals” and don’t expect much from their kids as a result. William is 24, reading on a 5-6 th grade level (we had a goal of 4th grade as that’s what a newspaper is geared to) and lives in his own.
More and more patients are coming into contact with medical professionals who treat them more like objects rather than humans. Chris Lovejoy, a physician-in-training at St. George’s Hospital in London, told Quartz that one of the reasons behind it could be that they simply don’t have time to show empathy at work. “Quite easily in medicine, time pressure becomes just another excuse to avoid difficult conversations,” he said.
But while we can sometimes justify their impersonal treatment as an obvious symptom of receiving better expertise and correct diagnosis, compassion is essential in medicine. “Empathy is, and always has been, a core part of medical practice,” Lovejoy added. “I remember a psychiatrist at medical school who would always say ‘the first thing you prescribe to a patient is yourself.‘” We can just hope that we will see more prescriptions of good bedside manner and basic human decency to avoid breaking patients’ trust in the future.
This wasn’t a doctor, but a couple of years ago I had to get blood drawn at a lab. When they called me in, I sat down in the chair, and laid my arm out on the table so they could draw the blood.. At that point, some old self harm scars on my arm were still pretty visible (and it’s something I’m very self-conscious about). The phlebotomist gasps when she sees it, says “How ugly! What could have ever made you do that to yourself?” and stood there waiting expecting an answer. Her tone was not of genuine concern, but was sort of disgust. I told her it’s private and asked if we could just start the blood draw, and I had to repeat that multiple times before she actually started. While she was doing it, she continued on telling me that I’m “too young to be depressed” and that the scars were “such a horrible thing to do” to myself. I couldn’t get up and run out the door because there was a needle in my arm. My face was so red, tears were in my eyes, and became so embarrassed and upset that I couldn’t say anything. I just waited for it to be done, and ran out the door.
I found an online feedback form for the company and left a complaint there, and left a voicemail on their customer service phone line. I got no response, but I just hope someone spoke with that person about it. And that no one with self-harm scars is made to feel as embarrassed and ashamed as I was.
Omg, I’m so sorry that happened to you. You shouldnt be ashamed of your scars. I get they give you bad memories, but look how much you have grown past it. That doctor was a terrible person.
I had developed DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) as a result of being bad at having type 1 combined with a severe stomach bug. I hadn’t eaten in days and was having horrible diarrhea. When I was getting treated in the ICU, I had an accident and s**t the bed- I wasn’t allowed to get up on my own and no one was answering the nurse call button (I don’t blame anyone for that- people are actually dying in the ICU and I just needed frequent monitoring for an insulin drip). The CNA had a new person shadowing her and when I got up, the newbie audibly gagged and acted super grossed out, swearing under her breath while changing the sheets. I get it, poop is gross, but I was already super embarrassed and ashamed. The main CNA told her to leave and apologized to me for her reaction. I just asked that she not come back, which they respected.
i went to the doctors' to get my breasts checked (he basically just held and caressed them in a manner he wouldn't have had a chance to feel anything potentially dangerous) and due to them causing me a lot of physical pain i asked him about my options regarding breast reduction surgery. he got visibly angry and told me to never even think about it, and called them "beautiful and tender". he was well in his 50s and i was 18-19. i paid like 50 dollars for master roshi to ignore my health issues and make me find another doctor who actually wanted to help people
I was 17 and had found a lump in my breast. I was terrified.
My mother took me to her gynecologist because she didn't trust mine, who she'd never met. The doctorexamined me and told me I had something called Fibrocystic Disease. He said hormones make it worse. Since I was on oral birth control, I asked him if I should stop taking the pill.
He said I shouldn't be on the pill in the first place and walked out of the room without saying anything else. No explanation of what Firbrocystic Disease was, no further instructions for care.
I waited about 20 minutes for someone to come back and then I just got dressed, including putting on my winter coat and waited. Fifteen minutes later a nurse comes in, looks at me and says "You can get dressed now."
I said, "I AM dressed."
She looked at me again and turned around and walked out without a word.
I left and never went back. I ended up looking up Fibrocystic Disease at my college library, but really couldn't tell how bad it was or what I should do.
Ended up going to a different gynecologist. I didn't have Fibrcystic Disease, I had fibrous breast tissue. I ended up having that lump removed because it caused so much pain. Haven't had any lumps since or any pain.
That first doctor can go f**k himself.
Oh yeah, and my mother, who is the one who put me on birth control, said the doctor was right, I shouldn't be on it. Nothing like feeling cared for and supported by your parents and doctor.
I was diagnosed at 27 with a pituitary adenoma. I found a lump in my breast and was lactating 3 yrs after breastfeeding stopped. I was diagnosed 1st given pamphlets and sent home to think I had a brain tumor and was going to leave my 2 year old behind with no mom. I told my mom who was a mess and had just lost her husband. My regular gynecologist was notified of my impending mammogram and ordered blood work for me which was normal. My scans showed a mass so I had a biopsy on Christmas eve because it was the soonest appointment. No cancer 6 months I thought I was dying because nothing was explained to me, no help was given and the dr didn't know s**t. Also the surgeon who did the biopsy wouldn't remove the tumor which was not cancerous from my body when asked. Fun times that was.
When I was in junior high, I went out for the basketball team. I had to take a physical and it had to be done by the school's doctor and not my own. I went in to do the physical and had to get naked. I did so and the doctor looked me over. He saw that I have an inverted breast bone and said "Wow. That is freakish. You can't be on the team with that." I know that my breast bone makes it look like I have a whole in my chest, but I had never been self-conscious about until that moment. Because this examination was taking place in the boys' locker room in front of other kids wanting to go out for the team too, everyone started laughing at me and calling me names. I grabbed my s**t and left. My mother took me to our regular doctor who reassured me that there was nothing wrong with me and that there are plenty of people who have breast bones just like mine. It didn't help but I appreciated that she explained it to me. I stopped taking off my shirt in front of others. I was harassed and bullied by my entire classic for years to come because a doctor made an comment that he shouldn't have made.

I had taken my 92 year old mother to a recheck appointment to her PCP.
An apparently new medical assistant was dutifully getting her history by reading off a checklist. When she asked when Mom's last period was, I looked at Mom a little nervously: she was VERY old school, very dignified and would typically never acknowledge to her sons that she had female parts.
I saw a rare twinkle in Mom's eyes as she calmly replied, "well, I can't give you an exact number of months, but I'm pretty sure it was sometime in the late 1960s."
The assistant had the good grace to laugh with us, apologize, then read the next question.
"do you think you might be pregnant?"

When I was 21 I dislocated my shoulder and it continued to hurt for weeks. Went to a specialist, he suggested the pain was all in my head! After an MRI he realized I had a SLAP tear in my shoulder, so I said, looks like it's not all in my head, and he looked at me with such contempt, I never went back to that a*****e.
Pain is always in your head. Did having a child tear a woman from her V to her A. They blame post partem(not the fact it tore her urethra and now intercourse was painful). Oh the reason why your depressed is because you have bad coping mechanisms not because your in chronic pain from a car wreck and had to relearn how to walk again. Don't get me started of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue diagnosis not being looked into.
I had a 20+ day period two months after a miscarriage. It wasn’t slowing down. I went to a dr at 9 days. He told me I wasn’t having a miscarriage. He was also standing in the hallway next to the waiting room and yelled it it it the room I was in before walking away.
I went to another dr on day 18. He told me to calm down and it will stop. I was calm.
Went to another dr on day 20. He gave me medication to clot my blood. It stopped on day 22.
A month later I had excruciating pain in my left ovary. So much pain I’d puke and pain killers didn’t touch it. I went to the hospital 12 hours after the pain started. The dr there didn’t run any tests or even touch me or ask me any questions. Then he went on a rant about how women are hysterical and run to the emergency room for anything. Like soaking a pad in an hour or passing huge blood clots. Which are things we are told to do by drs.
Horrifying and disgusting! Doctors are SUPPOSED to help! If you don’t like to help people than quit!

A doctor put a fetal heart Doppler on my pregnant belly, moves it around a bit and says…”it’s dead.” When I said through tears, what?!! He just casually replied, the Doppler wasn’t working.
Pediatrician looked at our toddler, standing with a swayback (lordosis) posture, then without considering anything else turned to my wife and said, "she stands like that because you baby her too much."
That was only our first clue that the doctor was a f*****g moron.
My mum had some symptoms that resulted in a scan of her brain. It sort of looked like she might have a tumor or water on the brain or something.
When giving her the results the doctor said, "Maybe this is God's way of saying it's time."
My Mum, who was in her 50s at the time, went absolutely off on them - God has nothing to do with this etc.
Turns out she was fine. Symptoms were related to something else, and the ambiguous scan results could have been machine or human error.
I had been starving myself for years, had no period, and a BMI of 16.46.
I finally broke down, swallowed my pride, and saw a doctor. She told me I looked fine.
What the actual f**k. After all those years of disorders and unhealthy lifestyle, to be brushed off like that when seeking help, that’s why I have no faith in humanity
I’d been having acute elbow pain for a while. The doc walks in and just goes “you should cut out all dairy”, without any sort of diagnosis. Then says to cut out all dairy products and lists milk, cheese and eggs. I told him eggs were not dairy. He insisted that they were.
Not to me, but about me. I went to see the family doctor over a minor thing. I was an adult at the time, and didn't tell my parents because they freak out about anything medical-related. My mother went to see him a few weeks later and he told her I'd been to see him. I was so f*****g angry.
I messed up my hip a few years ago. Went to urgent care and they told me it was a strained lap band. I told this to my sister-an athletic trainer- and she told me to lie on my side with a pillow between my legs and that would help with the pain. It did not. In fact, it hurt so badly that every muscle I had locked up. My husband has to push me onto my back.
Made an appointment Monday morning. When I came in I told the doctor the above, and she rolled her eyes. “It’s a strained lap band,” she told me. “You’re overthinking this. It will be fine if you rest.”
I repeated the bit about what my sister told me, and she basically implied my sister was out of her league in dealing with injury and that she’s just making me paranoid.
I fought her on it a bit and finally she agreed to examine me. And let me tell you, I have no idea what she did, but whatever it was it was not gentle and it hurt so bad I actually yelled and started crying. Then she had the nerve to look at me and say “Oh. That’s not your lap band.” No f’in s**t, lady. And then she wanted to immediately get back into examining me. I was so pissed I actually put in a complaint.
Turns out I’d torn several connective tissues and chipped off a few pieces of the bone. I ended up on medical leave for almost four months. (Worked retail) But I was being a hypochondriac, y’all.

My Grandfather in Law has severe Dementia. He lived alone but my MiL and me visited him 3 times a day to make sure he eats and takes his meds and keep him company.
A few weeks ago, he couldn't get up in the morning, said his hip hurt. So, my MiL drives him to the Hospital, but because of Covid she isn't allowed in the ER. So this demented old man sits in the ER for 4 Hours and guess what he told the doctor when he asked him what was wrong? "I don't know"
Of course he doesn't. He sat down, right now his hip doesn't hurt so much, he has _no Idea why he is there_ .
So, the Doctor calls my MiL and tells her he's fine and can go home. My MiL was sceptical so she asked _point blank_ "Can he move? Can he go to the toilet alone?"
And what did the Doctor tell her all _three times _ She asked to make sure? "Yeah, he's fine."
He then proceeds to load my GiL up with to Guys to _carry him into the house in a special chair because he cannot manage to walk even that little piece alone_
All of this transpired on a Friday, and we proceeded to spent the Weekand at his place to look after him and help him to the toilet, for instance. On Monday we brought him back in the ER and guess What?
No really guess what was wrong with him.
_He had broken his Hip_ . This man walked around _3 Days_ with a Handcart with a _broken Hip_
But, sure. He's fine.
I went in to the doctors with a very painful UTI. Doctor said if I wear a skirt as short as I did in these temperatures theres no wonder my “lady area is suffering from a cold”. I needed to go home, change and wrap a blanket around myself to warm it up. She reluctantly agreed to do a urine sample; which showed up blood and a lot of protein. Gave me some antibiotics after much debate and gave me the skankiest look as I walked out.
I swear I’m not making it up.
A doctor once examined me for a genital area irritation. He sent away samples for tests. While waiting a few days for the results to come back, he told me I had Herpes. I had been with my wife 10 years at that point. Imagine the next few days where we go off on each other for giving the other one Herpes. Imagine the strain that puts on a marriage with all the implications/accusations of being unfaithful, deceitful, etc... the anger, the hurt, the emotional damage, the betrayal.
I had a bladder infection.
If OP had researched herpes infection, they would know it can be dormant for a decade. Would have avoided some drama.
I was weirdly sick for days, so went to a walk in clinic. After a couple tests the doctor walks in and says: who manages your diabetes? I reply: Wait, I have diabetes?
She rolls her eyes at me and says: well, you're in your thirties, this is what happens when you get old. Don't worry, the diabetes will take about 30 years to kill you. That's not bad for a man.
So everyone in their thirties and above will just magically get diabetes because they're old? Tell that to my 87 year old grandmother who's never had a blood sugar problem.
My 6 month old son had an appt. with a developmental ped. I was clueless but they kept doing all these physical tests, can he put a raisin in a jar, etc. I asked multiple times, what are you looking for with these tests?? She said, oh we're just seeing where he's at so we can track his growth.
I went home and googled it - cerebral palsy. He has cerebral palsy and I had to find out on Google b/c the a*****e doctor would not tell to my face.
He's 12 now and I'm still fuming at the doctor.

In the end, at least on paper my unconscious a*s, with multiple chest drain plugs and on oxygen had to be wheeled out onto the curb, then wheeled into ER and readmitted on account of being in critical condition after heart surgery.
Blue Cross really upped the ante on bullying me into dying instead of going though the bother of trying to live without bankrupting myself.
After an appendectomy I had a follow up. Instead of inspecting the incisions on the table like normal, he grabbed my hips and looked down my pants. He said "everything looks really good.... especially that bottom one" then winked at me. The bottom one is just above my genitals. Turns out the top two were infected.

Had a bad head injury when I was a kid (12 or 13) and saw a bunch doctors trying to figure out what was wrong. Got a little snippy with one of them over something I don’t even remember. Pulled up the medical record years later and she referred to me as a “child of the devil” in her report. Had to make some phone calls to get that “diagnosis” removed from my record.

My meniscus completely tore off + few ligaments in knee and I couldn't straighten my leg.

I was denied MRI because of it.

After 3 days of sitting in a hospital the head orthopedic surgeon said I will get the arthroscopy.
They found pieces of meniscus that broke off and torn ligaments.

Years later on almost daily basis I have fear from that moment.
I feel the pain and any and every slight pain in knee brings back the memories and terror I felt.
Went to a university gynecologist when I was 19 because I was experiencing persistent/every day breakthrough bleeding for weeks. I took my mom to see a neurologist as her PCP suspected she had Parkinson’s. After waiting almost an hour, the neuro came into the room, took a look, told us she had Parkinson’s, then told us to watch some YouTube videos describing what Parkinson’s was, then left the room. Went to my new doctor ( we've moved to a new area) to get a letter excusing me from duty. I had already talked with her about my mental health issues but she proceeded to go off about people whole fail to do their duty. I'm sitting there struggling to breathe and shaking with anxiety! Now seeing a different doctor.

Went to the gynecologist for my two week checkup after having a baby. She said, "Oh my God. I'm calling the emergency department to let them know you're coming. You have a thombrosed hemorrhoid." So I traipsed my bloody a*s downstairs and waited. Doctor comes in and asks how long I've been having pain. I told him two weeks. He was like, "That's not possible." My dude, I have a blood clot in my a**s because my attempt to push a child out of my body also pushed out some of my guts. It's not only possible, it's actually happening. It turns out that it's a pretty easy surgery, and I could finally sit down!

I have a rare mast cell disease that randomly causes me to go into anaphylaxis. At first I was going into anaphylactic shock every week to 10 days, and it took about three years to get a good diagnosis and treatment. During that time I had an allergist that had started out promising that he could manage my symptoms, that he'd seen this "dozens of times". He became less and less accessible & started suggesting that I avoid the ER even if I've used an Epi Pen, which is dangerous. My husband had questions about that and the Dr. literally refused to answer him as he "wasn't patient". I had to repeat the questions before he'd answer. It was truly bizarre. Then one day he just walked out on me during an appointment. I found another allergist after that who got me into a study at NIH, which led to diagnosis and better management. But I was just so hopeless and angry when that allergist was a jerk!

Not a doctor but a psychotherapist I was visiting because of my CPTSD after being physically, mentally and sexually abused for many years in my childhood: "So you've been beaten up regulary by your parents? Well, that happend to me, too. Not my parents, but the guys at school harrassing me. Made me gain confidence a lot. Mental abuse is b******t. If your mom said mean things or or was manipulating you, it's been her way to get you ready for life. And stop talking about sexual abuse. If there is no proof of any actual penetration it never happened." I have been 2 or 3 years old when it started. My brain luckily wiped out most of my childhood, but still I suffer from flahbacks, got a social phobia, strong depression and many more mental health issues from all that abuse.
Please tell me you were able to change therapists! What a horrible way to treat someone. I hope you were able to find the right person to talk to. I'm nearly 60 and still haven't dealt with my childhood and young adulthood abuse. At least you're doing what you need to do for yourself {hugs}

I had severe digital ulcers (fingers) due to my autoimmune disorder and Raynauds. Hand specialist admitted me for 4 days of treatment to stop gangrene from progressing. The problem: I was between jobs and had no insurance and she treated me like I was beneath her contempt. After I was discharged, still in excruciating pain, I said I was worried about going back to work because I rely on my hands (as most people do). Her response was "Oh don't worry, you can always be a greeter at Walmart." I'm still angry.

Not a doctor but a nurse. I’d just had a full laparotomy and reacted quite badly to the anaesthetic. I was just being constantly sick even though there was nothing to bring up. It was agony because my stomach was basically held together with staples. She just said “what do you expect me to do about it”. and left me. Thankfully it was just shift change and the next nurse immediately called the anaesthetist to come and take a look.
Orthodontist told my 15 year old daughter that if she didn't get her teeth straightened she would never get a good job or a boyfriend. My daughters problem? One lower tooth was sitting sideways. Same orthodontist ground my son's teeth down so far that he exposed the nerve!
About 12 hours after giving birth, struggling with a newborn to latch. The midwife "trying to help" said: your nipples are too small, you will never feed the baby. I was shattered. Hey, you mean btch, I was breastfeeding for 2,5 years! SUCK on that!
A friend had stomach problems for years. Don't know what the doctors kept telling him, but he finally found out he had (now) late stage stomach cancer.
Oh, goodie, I get to share my medical tale again, yeah! ;-) Neighbour found 15-year-old me by the side of the road, not a scratch on me or my bike. Called for an ambulance just to be sure. Mum shows up, I start complaining as I hate the attention, she convinces me to go along seeing as they were called. I'm on the exam table at the hospital and suddenly grab my head screaming. X-rays ensue and show a slight shadow. Every single doc in the room said it's nothing to worry about except one. Luckily, he was in charge! A two-hour surgery took almost five and the doc came out of the room with a trace of a smile on his lips. "So glad we did that," he said as he explained they'd removed a blood clot the size of a fried egg near the base of my brain. Mere hours away from reaching my brain. That was more than 40 years ago. If that doc hadn't been there (and it was a coincidence that he was, he was just visiting his nurse girlfriend and worked a few shifts as a favour), I'd be a dead woman.
Story 2: I was blessed to have non-painful periods until my 40’s. At first, I thought the excruciating pain was just a symptom of getting older but it kept getting worse. My GP was on vacation when I caved and went to my clinic. The alt GP (female) had zero sympathy. “Periods hurt”. I told her “no matter how many years you took to get your degree and the experience you’ve had since, I have lived in my body for coming up five decades. This isn’t right.” Insisted on referral to a gynaecologist. I had a huge ovarian cyst caused by endometriosis. Had to have the ovary removed and endo scars burned off by my gyno. You know you better than any doctor can, they don’t live in your body.
Two stories: In my mid-20s, my left nostril started to drip. Not mucus, really thin liquid like happens when you’re out in extreme cold, but it was constant regardless of the ambient temperature - I found it very embarrassing at the time. I was fortunate to have private healthcare, so had it checked out and was told I had a deviated septum from my nose having been broken. This was news to me but I have CPTSD from childhood abuse so not a huge surprise. I filled out multiple forms and was asked many times “do you have any allergies?” Every time I answered “Yes. I’m sensitive to detergent. Please don’t wash the sheets on my bed with detergent that has enzymes. I get hives.” Went thru corrective surgery and woke up the following morning to find I’d scratched myself bloody. I begged the nurses for an antihistamine but was told they couldn’t give me any medication until the surgeon signed off on it. It was his day off and he was out playing golf.
So just the one surgeon in a hospital? No other doctors? Do they know every doctor can prescribe medication?

When I was in university I booked a Pap test with my Dr. When I told him what I was there for her told me to book with another Dr. as I lived next door to him and he said it would be too awkward for him. FOR HIM. When so started experiencing insomnia he told me I was actually sleeping I was just dreaming I was awake. My new Dr. actually listened to me and referred me to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with major depressive disorder and started me on antidepressants. Found out almost twenty years later I have bipolar disorder type two and the antidepressants were triggering manic episodes.
In the gym after a set, sometimes my heart would suddenly jump to like 220 bpm, then suddenly drop back to normal. Sometimes I'd almost pass out during these episodes. Primary doc sent me to a cardiologist who said, "Well, your heart rate will increase when you exercise." No s**t! I've been working out for 30+ years and I never knew that! But he did set me up with a Holter monitor. Turned out I was having SVT episodes caused by an extra electrical circuit in my heart. Got it fixed and no more episodes.
I had gall stones that were supposedly small and wouldn't be a problem. A year and a half later gall bladder is removed and I am now in a wheelchair. Due to the long wait for surgery I ended up with a vitamin b1 deficiency that caused wernickes encephalopathy. It caused my body to shut down and it was because I couldn't eat without gall stone attacks

When I was younger my pills (for epilepsy) were causing me to lose weight and I looked sickly. The doctor said it was my parents fault and the pills were fine. I had a seizure not long after, got off that pill and got a new doctor.

When I was about 10 I got a really bad fever- sweating, fever dreams, the lot. My mum took me to the doctor who asked me to take off my shirt for a reason I can’t remember. Now, I was a bit of a late bloomer so I didn’t have any breasts and was also quite skinny for my age. After describing all my symptoms to her, she kept on asking if I felt self conscious about my breasts and me not going through puberty yet, despite that having NOTHING to do with why we went there. She was about 50-60 and not my normal GP ( who I liked) so I got uncomfortable. When we finally left my mum talked about how weird it was and had nothing to do with my fever, which passed about 2 days later
These experiences are a major reason why so many turn to alternative medicine. At least the housewife selling Doterra (essential oils) acts like she cares. I have issues I need to see an actual Dr about, but I'm putting it off. I'm just so battle weary

My SIL. Was diagnosed with pancreatitis. For 18months she was told this. She was a large lady.. 30stone.. she lost 18stone in 6months. Was told she had an eating disorder and its in her head. Turns out.. she had cancer in her pancreas, stomach, liver and kidneys. She died on Christmas day last year having had a stroke and weighing only 6stone
It was awful and she was under the "pancreatic specialist"!!? In a private hospital. But because she had this "diagnosis" (wrong damn diagnosis) she was told (and her husband heard this) that it "wasn't worth the time or money to have another CT scan" as she had already had one at the start.

At the age of twenty nine, my dear wife forced me to go to the ER due to severe chest pains. Doc comes in looks at my chart (no tests done) and said it must be gastritis because I'm too young to have a heart attack. One week later I come in via ambulance presenting all symptoms of a cardiac arrest. Same doc, without waiting for the EEG or the blood test, starts the discharge paperwork because, again, I'm too young. If the head of cardiology, who was cutting through the ER on his way to his car, overhearing this. They would never have found that my LAD aorta was blocked. Pretty sure I wouldn't have survived the drive home.
I have never understood that "You are too young" bit. That is so unscientific. What is scientific is to say that something is statistically unlikely. But there are always going to be people who don't fit the pattern and a good doctor would keep that in mind. I am glad that you got the right treatment, eventually, but that was close.

It's a shame, a horrible shame that all this is true, especially for females.
Had to go and see a doctor after husband and I crashed with a moose. I got the entire moose on me-through the window. A week or so after I started to feel very paranoid along with other symptoms; was very depressed and worried. The first thing he says when he sees me is “ew, you have nail polish! Why do women have to have nail polish??” He’s fired now I heard.

I finally went to get some counselling for depression/PTSD 8 or so years after my fist suicide attempt, only to be told that I have cyclic depression and I should basically expect to feel like this for the rest of my life. Not a great outlook when you finally gain the courage to seek help. I had only taken so long to seek help in the first place because people I knew who had been to counsellors/psychologists had all said they were s**t and it wouldn't help me anyway. Fast forward another 8 or so years and I finally found a good one who helped me to make some progress only to lose funding for my sessions because "the depression was not caused by the rape, since the suicide attempt happened before that." No s**t... it was caused by sexual abuse as a child and exacerbated by being raped at 14.
When I was in middle school, we had an absolutely horrible family doctor. Horrible. I think he messed up everyone in our family. I kept going back, consistently complaining of bad pain in my lower legs. First he said I was just trying to get out of gym. I told him that I liked gym class, but this pain was making it hard to enjoy. Then he switched his 'diagnosis' to "growing pains". Twit. Eventually, my mother got frustrated enough that she asked me out of the room and gave him hell for this BS. FINALLY, he agreed to send me to a podiatrist who told me I had a bad case of fallen arches, and that, since it had taken me so long to get a diagnosis, it would take a lot longer for me to correct it, if ever. The family doctor also told my mother, who said she was concerned about having heart attacks, that "women don't get heart attacks". My maternal grandmother died of a heart attack. After that, we demanded that the clinic give us another doctor.
At one point, I had to go and see him for something since none of the other doctors were available for several days (shocker). At that point, I'd been diagnosed with depression, and he was trying to trick me into saying something that would have vindicated him on his opinion that I didn't actually have depression. I, a teenager at that point, outwitted him, and I'll never forget the look on his face. Like, he was so annoyed that he couldn't trick me into proving his petty opinion. I was diagnosed by a psychologist. Eventually, he got drummed out of the clinic, because NOBODY wanted him. I guess they'd gotten enough complaints that they didn't want their clinic's name associated with sub-par medical care, or potentially be sued because of him.

It took me years to be diagnosed. I went to so many doctors who told me I had depression and that was why I was sleeping so much. Years later, I was actually diagnosed with narcolepsy. No wonder I was sleeping a lot.

Oooo boy do I have stories! The worst one though is when my nasal septum collapsed and my doctor tried to blame it on allergies! Told me to take a Zyrtec. I ended up getting it fixes and the surgeon said it was the worst septum collapse he's ever seen so there's that.
"What do you know about beta lactam antibiotics?" when I told him I couldn't have any antibiotics with that classification and then, after apparently finding my answer unsatisfactory, telling me they weren't beta lactam and prescribing them to me anyway. Luckily the pharmacist didn't cover for him when I asked them to double-check and they made him give me another prescription. I *should* have said "only that my GP, allergist, and nephrologist all told me they could kill me".
Ok, here's my story. I will try to condense it as much as possible. Basics, I was 37(F) at the time, husband died unexpectedly the year before, had a four year old daughter, and, I was uninsured. We were basically homeless at that point (another story), and were temporarily staying with my brother. I slept on a really thick foam type cot on the floor. I woke up one morning to back pain and assumed I had just slept "wrong". Within an hour the pain became increasingly worse. Tried Tylenol, Motrin, Alene, etc. throughout the day, NOTHING even Belgian to touch the pain! Within a few days the pain was EXCRUCIATING!! I could barely walk, sit, lay down, or do anything! I could barely care for my four year old. It's important to note at this time that our local clinic wouldn't see you if you couldn't pay, up front, if you were uninsured. Depending on why you were there, that would include, for me, the doctors fee for office call and an X-ray. I had NO income at the time........
Part 2: The clinic told me to go to the ER because they "couldn't" refuse me. I went to the ER. They ask me how I injured my back. I told them, no injury, woke up in pain. They took an X-ray, told me nothing showed up in it, gave me four pain pills and told me to follow up with my family dr AT THE CLINIC! I kept telling them something was wrong and the clinic wouldn't see me unless I could pay up front and I was destitute. Fast forward, the pain was unrelenting and, again, BEYOND EXCRUCIATING!! There were days when I had to crawl to the bathroom because I couldn't walk. I cried in pain EVERY day! To bear down to try and have a BM would cause so much pain that I would sweat profusely and almost pass out. My life was a nightmare!! I went to the ER several times and cried and BEGGED them to please help me! That I couldn't live like this! Again, four pain pills and sent home.....cont.....

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went to see my GP about a strange lump under my left breast. He dismissed me, called me a "hysterical pregnant woman". I should have smacked him, after all, I'm just a hysterical pregnant woman. Turned out I had a third nipple and pregnancy hormones had caused the small bit of breast tissue to swell. I never knew it was a third nipple, it looked like a skin tag. I even started lactating a little from it while breastfeeding! On a more serious note, it took me ages and loads of stress to finally get a diagnosis for my Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME. Also, getting a diagnosis for my Asperger's took years.

I genuinely seems some of these “doctors” may be fake. How on earth can they be properly trained and say such stupid or horribly insensitive things. It’s a very scary though. I hope everyone on this list got proper medical care eventually and from someone with empathy and kindness too.
Mine isn't nearly as bad but still made me angry. I had to have a cystoscopy because of microhematuria. A cystoscopy may not be very painful but it's extremely uncomfortable since they fill up your bladder to the brim and it feels as if it's bursting. So while I lay there, vagina in his face with a endoscope up my ureter and my (male) urologist has the nerve to tell me I should be glad I'm not a guy because it's much worse for then
This just happened to me, and I don't know what to do at this point because the treatment is working, but the MD is abrasive and aggressive. I'm being treated by a wound care doctor for leg ulcers. This required debriding (painful scraping) at the first visit and difficult and time consuming dressing changes performed by me. At the second visit, I questioned whether further debridement was necessary. MD told me I could refuse, but then instead of treating me, she would refer me to "palliative" care and my legs would fall off. Seriously? Let her do it, but looking for a different MD>

I cannot complain about the majority of my personal interactions with medical staff, I've had the occasional small issue but my wife had a horrific and potentially fatal experience when giving birth to our first child in the maternity hospital. The two midwives in attendance initially didn't believe she was in labour, then when they realised she was actually having contractions she was rushed into the delivery suite where they repeatedly admonished her for not pushing, she had been, but baby's shoulder was stuck so no amount of pushing would have been enough. When the baby's heart rate started climbing rapidly the obstetrician was called , she took one look at the situation, shot the midwives a furious look then immediately carried out an episiotomy, my son was delivered distressed but otherwise healthy. I was given the baby to hold in another room while my wife got stitched up, the midwives then sent her into the shower ALONE, she nearly passed out in there.
Went in to have a surgery and they asked me to sign the paper that says they need to do everything in their power to save me if something goes wrong. I said "no, I am DNR, if I die on that table harvest my organs so others can live." The nurse went out and got the surgeon who told me "I feel like at your age you are too young to make that decision and I will not allow you to die. You are not a DNR because you are just too young."...... Yeah a 30 year old doesn't have the right to be a DNR in Marietta Ohio.
Just think how much worse this will be when women and gay people lose their rights. We lose our right to privacy w it. Doctors can flat out refuse to see you. They will report you to the police and they won't get in any trouble if they hurt or mangle you. Some already have god complexes homophobic and extremely misogynistic they will do anything for revenge if they want. So many people are going to die.
Doctors are f*cking useless. My primary care physician's only role seems to be to sit across the room from me staring at his laptop while he tells me what specialist I need to see. I've been with the guy nearly four years and I don't think he's ever examined me.

Recently found out that He committed su*cide by slitting his throat in front of his family when he found out his wife had been cheating and wanted to take him money... yeah.....
I had been having some chest pains, so my regular doc referred me to a cardiologist. My blood pressure was SLIGHTLY higher than normal. I have never had high blood pressure in my life, but he insisted that I needed to be on medication - even after I mentioned pounding a Diet Coke on the drive over and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Fast forward a few weeks and I'm at the chiropractor's office for a pinched nerve in my neck. They take your BP as a matter of course and guess what? Mine was 80 over 35 & they called an ambulance immediately. I was told in the ER that another couple of hours and I might have died - because some asshat with a degree insisted on putting me on medication I didn't need. You can bet I raised holy hell. I don't know what the actual outcome was, but I do know he no longer works at that clinic.
Too many for myself to write down but the one that upsets me the most is one that happened to my dad. I was just a baby at the time but I've heard the story many times. My dad was having a severe asthma attack, a difficult time breathing, the doctor in the emergency room didn't believe him, assumed he was faking it. What kind of drugs or treatment do you get that you'd fake an asthma attack for?! My mom took him to the clinic, he didn't even make it into the door before he turned blue and passed out. I can only imagine the thoughts going through the doctors head when the man he refused to treat showed up, 10 minutes after leaving, in the ambulance on a stretcher.
My dad is gratefully still alive but despite how many moments I've had with doctors, this one just angers me. My dad could have died that night because a doctor didn't believe that a man couldn't breathe.

My parents would ask him questions about medications, and he wasn't too prideful to look up the information in the PDR if he didn't know the answer. This was before there were any reference books available to the public and before pharmacies gave out printed information so this was very helpful, especially since all of us had had issues with serious side effects with medications. My parents must have been really lucky to find him.

I hate going for a pap smear. I know it's important, but I was always embarrassed. So, I'm getting it done, docs down there checking when the door opens. In comes some little boy, maybe four? A nurse grabbed him away quickly, but instead of apologizing, the doc says," He wants to learn early"I was pissed and found a new doc.

I tend to laugh or make fun of traumatic experiences I have, I work in the medical field, about 18 years ago I was on the birth control shot depo provera, I was on it for 2 years when I missed a dose, although I was in my mid 20's I had the worst menstrual period with debilitating cramps I've ever experienced. I worked in a diagnostic imaging clinic attached to an urgent care. I went to urgent care, I knew all the physicians there but I was in so much pain I was in an examination room kneeling on the floor with my head on a chair, my back against the door, a doctor whom I knew very well walked in and said, " Well, to be honest, this is the position I have always imagined you to be in". 20 years later and I still feel dirty about that
I couldn't get past post #3...I'm delirious on the fact these are actual personal experiences! My entire career has been working for medical specialists and even though a few were what I would describe as eccentric, none would have behaved so unethical, unprofessional and uncaring as these so called "professionals" that are being called out. I feel sick for everyone who had to endure this abuse, I hope complaints were maid to the body of ethics these people are subjected to and there was an inquiry. No one should have trauma forced on them!! Ever!!
Went to see a doctor at 23 for intense abdominal pain. Yes, I had done my own research, but with a family history of gall stones, a birth control pill that was known for giving people gall stones, and fairly extreme weight loss (30 lbs in 5 months) all signs pointed to gall stones. Doctor flat out told me it couldn't be gall stones. Two months later they had to remove my gall bladder, which had over 200 gall stones in it.
Child psychologist I saw at age 12 whilst on sleeping tablets and antidepressants due to extreme lack of sleep because of nightmares of sexual abuse from age 7. At 7, parents yelled at me for lying when I tried to tell. Told psychologist about neighbour abusing me and her response?..."it's quite common for girls that age to have a crush on an older man". Never told anyone else and spiralled into drugs and more abuse for DECADES after that. Now hitting 50 and finally talking to a decent dr who is helping me get my head together. So angry with that woman though. She did as much damage in her own way as the neighbour did.
I was brought to the ER for psychiatric reasons, and the nurse that was watching me get changed said "why are kids these days so depressed, just enjoy being a kid". Needless to say, I changed faster than I ever have in my life.
You don't have to be a professional athlete to have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Suffered for 15 years with increasingly terrible pain from neck to fingertips, regularly thought I was having a heart attack. A neck specialist told me there was nothing wrong that he could see on my MRI and referred me to a pain management clinic. I was "not a professional athlete and way too young" and clearly didn't "understand the benefits of pain medications". Hi, I am a former addict! Got a referral from my old pal shoulder specialist to a thoracic surgeon. Turns out my nerve and a small vein were split and growing AROUND my rib. Iwas born that way and would have eventually lost my fingers to gangrene. GANGRENE. I am 3 months post op and just celebrated sleeping on my left side for the first time in 20 years. Trust your body and remember "nerves hold grudges" .. once it's damaged the first time, it will need love and support forever.
I suffered hyperemesis gravidarum during my pregnancy. I was really sick. Throwing up all day (20times a day), not able to drink anything. When something wet touched my lips I vomited. After I started vomiting blood and feeling absolutely dreadful I went to the hospitaI, had to stay in the hospital for 5 days, I was dehydrated and received infusions. They released me, saying I need everyday an infusion otherwise I have to stay in the hospital till I stop vomiting and able to drink something (which ended at 30 weeks into my pregnancy). So I went to my gynecologist to talk further steps, first the nurse jells at me: you need to drink, it's important for you and the baby. Like I was on purpose not drinking. Than I show my Ob Gyn the letter of the hospital - she did not believe I was feeling so sick and needed infusions. So I left - without any recommendation/ address to go to get the help I needed and being ridiculed. I changed my Ob Gyn and luckily my GP tooked care of me really well.
My mom was experiencing a lot of pain, and hypersensitivity. Even soft clothes felt like they were full of needles. Her doctor tried several things, then told her it was all in her head. My mom insisted that it was not. Her doctor reluctantly referred her to a neurologist. Neurologist looks her over and goes "Let me see if I can guess everything you're feeling." He then lists every single type of pain that my mom has been experiencing. At my mom's confirmation, he tells her, "You have fibromyalgia." He explains what it is and starts her on medication, with the stipulation that it may take a few more visits and discussions to find the correct strength of medication to get her pain under control. My mom has another appointment with her regular doctor. After hearing her diagnosis, the man scoffs loudly and says "I don't believe in fibromyalgia." My mom basically said "This isn't the effing Easter Bunny, you jerk," and found a new doctor to be the patient of.
Yes, medical team can be opinionated too.. Take 2nd opinion if you feel not treated correctly
I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 8 years old. When I was 33, I had a surgery to try and find where the epilepsy (focal point) started from in my brain. The report from the surgery was sent to my general doctor who then told me I didn't have epilepsy and all of my "so called seizures" were "ticks." I never went back to that doctor. The surgery failed, but there were video recordings, witnesses, and EEG recordings of seizures I had during the surgery/ study (surgical EEG). Such a stupid doctor.
My story isn't that bad compared to others but once I was the last patient of the day in my psychiatrist's waiting room. He literally just walked through the waiting room, handed me my script, and walked out the door without a word to me. It was a good thing I was doing okay at that point, but what if I had been in crisis? I would have probably gotten hysterical at that point. I had another psychiatrist argue with me about my symptoms, claiming they weren't in the textbook. I couldn't possibly be feeling what I said I was feeling, i had to be feeling something else. I only saw him once. When I told another psychiatrist about that he just laughed and said, "How old is he?"
I was in the ER after a motorcycle accident; I had a broken wrist and toe but got off easy overall. At one point, a doctor just grabs and squeezes my broken toe. I scream, and he smiles. He later insists that my broken toe needs to be adjusted - by yanking on it. I was woozy from the medications and was not able to remember his name to report him after, which he was probably counting on.
In my family we faint at medical/squeamish things. When we faint, it's like being sucked into a black hole, having an amazing dream, and then being dragged back to real life in a matter of seconds and it's leaves us feeling horrendous. Because of this, we like to plan for things we know could make us pass out. I went to the local nurse to talk about something (can't remember what but no big deal). She told me that my dad had tricked me and that I was really there for a blood test/injection. She made out like he'd planned it. I got super upset and ran home to have a go at my dad. It turned out it was nothing to do with him but I could never forgive her for making me feel betrayed by my dad
Went to an endocrinologist to deal with my diabetes. He prescribed a med and told me that it "might upset my tummy." My tummy? Don't speak to me as if I'm a child. I'm a grown a*s man. Never went back. Found another doc who treats patients with respect.
2/2. I was furious at their incompetence and wanted to make an official complaint but my wife just wanted to forget about her traumatic experience so we didn't complain, how I wish we had. The thing is, my wife was a midwife herself and had trained with one of the stupid bitches in attendance, she didn't like her before and certainly not afterwards. My son has grown up healthy but was a very needy baby which I believe was due in part to the stress he suffered at birth. My heart still aches at the thought of the unnecessary suffering my wife and son endured in the "care" of those two ¢unts. I have a lot of respect for the NHS, they saved my life and the lives of my wife and son in separate incidents, but I hope those two rot in hell.
Went to the gynecologist for my two week checkup after having a baby. She said, "Oh my God. I'm calling the emergency department to let them know you're coming. You have a thombrosed hemorrhoid." So I traipsed my bloody a*s downstairs and waited. Doctor comes in and asks how long I've been having pain. I told him two weeks. He was like, "That's not possible." My dude, I have a blood clot in my a**s because my attempt to push a child out of my body also pushed out some of my guts. It's not only possible, it's actually happening. It turns out that it's a pretty easy surgery, and I could finally sit down!

At first I was going into anaphylactic shock every week to 10 days, and it took about three years to get a good diagnosis and treatment. During that time I had an allergist that had started out promising that he could manage my symptoms, that he'd seen this "dozens of times". He became less and less accessible & started suggesting that I avoid the ER even if I've used an Epi Pen, which is dangerous. My husband had questions about that and the Dr. literally refused to answer him as he "wasn't patient". I had to repeat the questions before he'd answer. It was truly bizarre. Then one day he just walked out on me during an appointment. I found another allergist after that who got me into a study at NIH, which led to diagnosis and better management. But I was just so hopeless and angry when that allergist was a jerk!

My brain luckily wiped out most of my childhood, but still I suffer from flahbacks, got a social phobia, strong depression and many more mental health issues from all that abuse.
Please tell me you were able to change therapists! What a horrible way to treat someone. I hope you were able to find the right person to talk to. I'm nearly 60 and still haven't dealt with my childhood and young adulthood abuse. At least you're doing what you need to do for yourself {hugs}

I had severe digital ulcers (fingers) due to my autoimmune disorder and Raynauds. Hand specialist admitted me for 4 days of treatment to stop gangrene from progressing. The problem: I was between jobs and had no insurance and she treated me like I was beneath her contempt. After I was discharged, still in excruciating pain, I said I was worried about going back to work because I rely on my hands (as most people do). Her response was "Oh don't worry, you can always be a greeter at Walmart." I'm still angry.

Not a doctor but a nurse. I’d just had a full laparotomy and reacted quite badly to the anaesthetic. I was just being constantly sick even though there was nothing to bring up. It was agony because my stomach was basically held together with staples. She just said “what do you expect me to do about it”. and left me. Thankfully it was just shift change and the next nurse immediately called the anaesthetist to come and take a look.
Orthodontist told my 15 year old daughter that if she didn't get her teeth straightened she would never get a good job or a boyfriend. My daughters problem? One lower tooth was sitting sideways. Same orthodontist ground my son's teeth down so far that he exposed the nerve!
About 12 hours after giving birth, struggling with a newborn to latch. The midwife "trying to help" said: your nipples are too small, you will never feed the baby. I was shattered. Hey, you mean btch, I was breastfeeding for 2,5 years! SUCK on that!
A friend had stomach problems for years. Don't know what the doctors kept telling him, but he finally found out he had (now) late stage stomach cancer.
Oh, goodie, I get to share my medical tale again, yeah! ;-) Neighbour found 15-year-old me by the side of the road, not a scratch on me or my bike. Called for an ambulance just to be sure. Mum shows up, I start complaining as I hate the attention, she convinces me to go along seeing as they were called. I'm on the exam table at the hospital and suddenly grab my head screaming. X-rays ensue and show a slight shadow. Every single doc in the room said it's nothing to worry about except one. Luckily, he was in charge! A two-hour surgery took almost five and the doc came out of the room with a trace of a smile on his lips. "So glad we did that," he said as he explained they'd removed a blood clot the size of a fried egg near the base of my brain. Mere hours away from reaching my brain. That was more than 40 years ago. If that doc hadn't been there (and it was a coincidence that he was, he was just visiting his nurse girlfriend and worked a few shifts as a favour), I'd be a dead woman.
Story 2: I was blessed to have non-painful periods until my 40’s. At first, I thought the excruciating pain was just a symptom of getting older but it kept getting worse. My GP was on vacation when I caved and went to my clinic. The alt GP (female) had zero sympathy. “Periods hurt”. I told her “no matter how many years you took to get your degree and the experience you’ve had since, I have lived in my body for coming up five decades. This isn’t right.” Insisted on referral to a gynaecologist. I had a huge ovarian cyst caused by endometriosis. Had to have the ovary removed and endo scars burned off by my gyno. You know you better than any doctor can, they don’t live in your body.
Two stories: In my mid-20s, my left nostril started to drip. Not mucus, really thin liquid like happens when you’re out in extreme cold, but it was constant regardless of the ambient temperature - I found it very embarrassing at the time. I was fortunate to have private healthcare, so had it checked out and was told I had a deviated septum from my nose having been broken. This was news to me but I have CPTSD from childhood abuse so not a huge surprise. I filled out multiple forms and was asked many times “do you have any allergies?” Every time I answered “Yes. I’m sensitive to detergent. Please don’t wash the sheets on my bed with detergent that has enzymes. I get hives.” Went thru corrective surgery and woke up the following morning to find I’d scratched myself bloody. I begged the nurses for an antihistamine but was told they couldn’t give me any medication until the surgeon signed off on it. It was his day off and he was out playing golf.
So just the one surgeon in a hospital? No other doctors? Do they know every doctor can prescribe medication?

When I was in university I booked a Pap test with my Dr. When I told him what I was there for her told me to book with another Dr. as I lived next door to him and he said it would be too awkward for him. FOR HIM. When so started experiencing insomnia he told me I was actually sleeping I was just dreaming I was awake. My new Dr. actually listened to me and referred me to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with major depressive disorder and started me on antidepressants. Found out almost twenty years later I have bipolar disorder type two and the antidepressants were triggering manic episodes.
In the gym after a set, sometimes my heart would suddenly jump to like 220 bpm, then suddenly drop back to normal. Sometimes I'd almost pass out during these episodes. Primary doc sent me to a cardiologist who said, "Well, your heart rate will increase when you exercise." No s**t! I've been working out for 30+ years and I never knew that! But he did set me up with a Holter monitor. Turned out I was having SVT episodes caused by an extra electrical circuit in my heart. Got it fixed and no more episodes.
I had gall stones that were supposedly small and wouldn't be a problem. A year and a half later gall bladder is removed and I am now in a wheelchair. Due to the long wait for surgery I ended up with a vitamin b1 deficiency that caused wernickes encephalopathy. It caused my body to shut down and it was because I couldn't eat without gall stone attacks

Load More Replies... When I was younger my pills (for epilepsy) were causing me to lose weight and I looked sickly. The doctor said it was my parents fault and the pills were fine. I had a seizure not long after, got off that pill and got a new doctor.

When I was about 10 I got a really bad fever- sweating, fever dreams, the lot. My mum took me to the doctor who asked me to take off my shirt for a reason I can’t remember. Now, I was a bit of a late bloomer so I didn’t have any breasts and was also quite skinny for my age. After describing all my symptoms to her, she kept on asking if I felt self conscious about my breasts and me not going through puberty yet, despite that having NOTHING to do with why we went there. She was about 50-60 and not my normal GP ( who I liked) so I got uncomfortable. When we finally left my mum talked about how weird it was and had nothing to do with my fever, which passed about 2 days later
These experiences are a major reason why so many turn to alternative medicine. At least the housewife selling Doterra (essential oils) acts like she cares. I have issues I need to see an actual Dr about, but I'm putting it off. I'm just so battle weary

My SIL. Was diagnosed with pancreatitis. For 18months she was told this. She was a large lady.. 30stone.. she lost 18stone in 6months. Was told she had an eating disorder and its in her head. Turns out.. she had cancer in her pancreas, stomach, liver and kidneys. She died on Christmas day last year having had a stroke and weighing only 6stone
It was awful and she was under the "pancreatic specialist"!!? In a private hospital. But because she had this "diagnosis" (wrong damn diagnosis) she was told (and her husband heard this) that it "wasn't worth the time or money to have another CT scan" as she had already had one at the start.

Doc comes in looks at my chart (no tests done) and said it must be gastritis because I'm too young to have a heart attack. One week later I come in via ambulance presenting all symptoms of a cardiac arrest. Same doc, without waiting for the EEG or the blood test, starts the discharge paperwork because, again, I'm too young. If the head of cardiology, who was cutting through the ER on his way to his car, overhearing this. They would never have found that my LAD aorta was blocked. Pretty sure I wouldn't have survived the drive home.
I have never understood that "You are too young" bit. That is so unscientific. What is scientific is to say that something is statistically unlikely. But there are always going to be people who don't fit the pattern and a good doctor would keep that in mind. I am glad that you got the right treatment, eventually, but that was close.

Had to go and see a doctor after husband and I crashed with a moose. I got the entire moose on me-through the window. A week or so after I started to feel very paranoid along with other symptoms; was very depressed and worried. The first thing he says when he sees me is “ew, you have nail polish! Why do women have to have nail polish??” He’s fired now I heard.

I finally went to get some counselling for depression/PTSD 8 or so years after my fist suicide attempt, only to be told that I have cyclic depression and I should basically expect to feel like this for the rest of my life. Not a great outlook when you finally gain the courage to seek help. I had only taken so long to seek help in the first place because people I knew who had been to counsellors/psychologists had all said they were s**t and it wouldn't help me anyway. Fast forward another 8 or so years and I finally found a good one who helped me to make some progress only to lose funding for my sessions because "the depression was not caused by the rape, since the suicide attempt happened before that." No s**t... it was caused by sexual abuse as a child and exacerbated by being raped at 14.
When I was in middle school, we had an absolutely horrible family doctor. Horrible. I think he messed up everyone in our family. I kept going back, consistently complaining of bad pain in my lower legs. First he said I was just trying to get out of gym. I told him that I liked gym class, but this pain was making it hard to enjoy. Then he switched his 'diagnosis' to "growing pains". Twit. Eventually, my mother got frustrated enough that she asked me out of the room and gave him hell for this BS. FINALLY, he agreed to send me to a podiatrist who told me I had a bad case of fallen arches, and that, since it had taken me so long to get a diagnosis, it would take a lot longer for me to correct it, if ever. The family doctor also told my mother, who said she was concerned about having heart attacks, that "women don't get heart attacks". My maternal grandmother died of a heart attack. After that, we demanded that the clinic give us another doctor.
At one point, I had to go and see him for something since none of the other doctors were available for several days (shocker). At that point, I'd been diagnosed with depression, and he was trying to trick me into saying something that would have vindicated him on his opinion that I didn't actually have depression. I, a teenager at that point, outwitted him, and I'll never forget the look on his face. Like, he was so annoyed that he couldn't trick me into proving his petty opinion. I was diagnosed by a psychologist. Eventually, he got drummed out of the clinic, because NOBODY wanted him. I guess they'd gotten enough complaints that they didn't want their clinic's name associated with sub-par medical care, or potentially be sued because of him.
Load More Replies... It took me years to be diagnosed. I went to so many doctors who told me I had depression and that was why I was sleeping so much. Years later, I was actually diagnosed with narcolepsy. No wonder I was sleeping a lot.

Oooo boy do I have stories! The worst one though is when my nasal septum collapsed and my doctor tried to blame it on allergies! Told me to take a Zyrtec. I ended up getting it fixes and the surgeon said it was the worst septum collapse he's ever seen so there's that.
"What do you know about beta lactam antibiotics?" when I told him I couldn't have any antibiotics with that classification and then, after apparently finding my answer unsatisfactory, telling me they weren't beta lactam and prescribing them to me anyway. Luckily the pharmacist didn't cover for him when I asked them to double-check and they made him give me another prescription. I *should* have said "only that my GP, allergist, and nephrologist all told me they could kill me".
Ok, here's my story. I will try to condense it as much as possible. Basics, I was 37(F) at the time, husband died unexpectedly the year before, had a four year old daughter, and, I was uninsured. We were basically homeless at that point (another story), and were temporarily staying with my brother. I slept on a really thick foam type cot on the floor. I woke up one morning to back pain and assumed I had just slept "wrong". Within an hour the pain became increasingly worse. Tried Tylenol, Motrin, Alene, etc. throughout the day, NOTHING even Belgian to touch the pain! Within a few days the pain was EXCRUCIATING!! I could barely walk, sit, lay down, or do anything! I could barely care for my four year old. It's important to note at this time that our local clinic wouldn't see you if you couldn't pay, up front, if you were uninsured. Depending on why you were there, that would include, for me, the doctors fee for office call and an X-ray. I had NO income at the time........
Part 2: The clinic told me to go to the ER because they "couldn't" refuse me. I went to the ER. They ask me how I injured my back. I told them, no injury, woke up in pain. They took an X-ray, told me nothing showed up in it, gave me four pain pills and told me to follow up with my family dr AT THE CLINIC! I kept telling them something was wrong and the clinic wouldn't see me unless I could pay up front and I was destitute. Fast forward, the pain was unrelenting and, again, BEYOND EXCRUCIATING!! There were days when I had to crawl to the bathroom because I couldn't walk. I cried in pain EVERY day! To bear down to try and have a BM would cause so much pain that I would sweat profusely and almost pass out. My life was a nightmare!! I went to the ER several times and cried and BEGGED them to please help me! That I couldn't live like this! Again, four pain pills and sent home.....cont.....
Load More Replies... When I was pregnant with my daughter, I went to see my GP about a strange lump under my left breast. He dismissed me, called me a "hysterical pregnant woman". I should have smacked him, after all, I'm just a hysterical pregnant woman. Turned out I had a third nipple and pregnancy hormones had caused the small bit of breast tissue to swell. I never knew it was a third nipple, it looked like a skin tag. I even started lactating a little from it while breastfeeding! On a more serious note, it took me ages and loads of stress to finally get a diagnosis for my Fibromyalgia and CFS/ME. Also, getting a diagnosis for my Asperger's took years.

I genuinely seems some of these “doctors” may be fake. How on earth can they be properly trained and say such stupid or horribly insensitive things. It’s a very scary though. I hope everyone on this list got proper medical care eventually and from someone with empathy and kindness too.
Mine isn't nearly as bad but still made me angry. I had to have a cystoscopy because of microhematuria. A cystoscopy may not be very painful but it's extremely uncomfortable since they fill up your bladder to the brim and it feels as if it's bursting. So while I lay there, vagina in his face with a endoscope up my ureter and my (male) urologist has the nerve to tell me I should be glad I'm not a guy because it's much worse for then
This just happened to me, and I don't know what to do at this point because the treatment is working, but the MD is abrasive and aggressive. I'm being treated by a wound care doctor for leg ulcers. This required debriding (painful scraping) at the first visit and difficult and time consuming dressing changes performed by me. At the second visit, I questioned whether further debridement was necessary. MD told me I could refuse, but then instead of treating me, she would refer me to "palliative" care and my legs would fall off. Seriously? Let her do it, but looking for a different MD>

I cannot complain about the majority of my personal interactions with medical staff, I've had the occasional small issue but my wife had a horrific and potentially fatal experience when giving birth to our first child in the maternity hospital. The two midwives in attendance initially didn't believe she was in labour, then when they realised she was actually having contractions she was rushed into the delivery suite where they repeatedly admonished her for not pushing, she had been, but baby's shoulder was stuck so no amount of pushing would have been enough. When the baby's heart rate started climbing rapidly the obstetrician was called , she took one look at the situation, shot the midwives a furious look then immediately carried out an episiotomy, my son was delivered distressed but otherwise healthy. I was given the baby to hold in another room while my wife got stitched up, the midwives then sent her into the shower ALONE, she nearly passed out in there.
Went in to have a surgery and they asked me to sign the paper that says they need to do everything in their power to save me if something goes wrong. I said "no, I am DNR, if I die on that table harvest my organs so others can live." The nurse went out and got the surgeon who told me "I feel like at your age you are too young to make that decision and I will not allow you to die. You are not a DNR because you are just too young."...... Yeah a 30 year old doesn't have the right to be a DNR in Marietta Ohio.
Just think how much worse this will be when women and gay people lose their rights. We lose our right to privacy w it. Doctors can flat out refuse to see you. They will report you to the police and they won't get in any trouble if they hurt or mangle you. Some already have god complexes homophobic and extremely misogynistic they will do anything for revenge if they want. So many people are going to die.
Doctors are f*cking useless. My primary care physician's only role seems to be to sit across the room from me staring at his laptop while he tells me what specialist I need to see. I've been with the guy nearly four years and I don't think he's ever examined me.
Hey all I had a therapist that I had seen for about 7 years, who gave me sound advice when I was struggling or so I thought. Recently found out that He committed su*cide by slitting his throat in front of his family when he found out his wife had been cheating and wanted to take him money... yeah.....
I had been having some chest pains, so my regular doc referred me to a cardiologist. My blood pressure was SLIGHTLY higher than normal. I have never had high blood pressure in my life, but he insisted that I needed to be on medication - even after I mentioned pounding a Diet Coke on the drive over and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Fast forward a few weeks and I'm at the chiropractor's office for a pinched nerve in my neck. They take your BP as a matter of course and guess what? Mine was 80 over 35 & they called an ambulance immediately. I was told in the ER that another couple of hours and I might have died - because some asshat with a degree insisted on putting me on medication I didn't need. You can bet I raised holy hell. I don't know what the actual outcome was, but I do know he no longer works at that clinic.
Too many for myself to write down but the one that upsets me the most is one that happened to my dad. I was just a baby at the time but I've heard the story many times. My dad was having a severe asthma attack, a difficult time breathing, the doctor in the emergency room didn't believe him, assumed he was faking it. What kind of drugs or treatment do you get that you'd fake an asthma attack for?! My mom took him to the clinic, he didn't even make it into the door before he turned blue and passed out. I can only imagine the thoughts going through the doctors head when the man he refused to treat showed up, 10 minutes after leaving, in the ambulance on a stretcher.
My dad is gratefully still alive but despite how many moments I've had with doctors, this one just angers me. My dad could have died that night because a doctor didn't believe that a man couldn't breathe.

My parents would ask him questions about medications, and he wasn't too prideful to look up the information in the PDR if he didn't know the answer. This was before there were any reference books available to the public and before pharmacies gave out printed information so this was very helpful, especially since all of us had had issues with serious side effects with medications. My parents must have been really lucky to find him.

I hate going for a pap smear. I know it's important, but I was always embarrassed. So, I'm getting it done, docs down there checking when the door opens. In comes some little boy, maybe four? A nurse grabbed him away quickly, but instead of apologizing, the doc says," He wants to learn early"I was pissed and found a new doc.
Some of these are just the doctor making a mistake, they are just humans afterall.
I tend to laugh or make fun of traumatic experiences I have, I work in the medical field, about 18 years ago I was on the birth control shot depo provera, I was on it for 2 years when I missed a dose, although I was in my mid 20's I had the worst menstrual period with debilitating cramps I've ever experienced. I worked in a diagnostic imaging clinic attached to an urgent care. I went to urgent care, I knew all the physicians there but I was in so much pain I was in an examination room kneeling on the floor with my head on a chair, my back against the door, a doctor whom I knew very well walked in and said, " Well, to be honest, this is the position I have always imagined you to be in". 20 years later and I still feel dirty about that
I couldn't get past post #3...I'm delirious on the fact these are actual personal experiences! My entire career has been working for medical specialists and even though a few were what I would describe as eccentric, none would have behaved so unethical, unprofessional and uncaring as these so called "professionals" that are being called out. I feel sick for everyone who had to endure this abuse, I hope complaints were maid to the body of ethics these people are subjected to and there was an inquiry. No one should have trauma forced on them!! Ever!!
Went to see a doctor at 23 for intense abdominal pain. Yes, I had done my own research, but with a family history of gall stones, a birth control pill that was known for giving people gall stones, and fairly extreme weight loss (30 lbs in 5 months) all signs pointed to gall stones. Doctor flat out told me it couldn't be gall stones. Two months later they had to remove my gall bladder, which had over 200 gall stones in it.
Child psychologist I saw at age 12 whilst on sleeping tablets and antidepressants due to extreme lack of sleep because of nightmares of sexual abuse from age 7. At 7, parents yelled at me for lying when I tried to tell. Told psychologist about neighbour abusing me and her response?..."it's quite common for girls that age to have a crush on an older man". Never told anyone else and spiralled into drugs and more abuse for DECADES after that. Now hitting 50 and finally talking to a decent dr who is helping me get my head together. So angry with that woman though. She did as much damage in her own way as the neighbour did.
I was brought to the ER for psychiatric reasons, and the nurse that was watching me get changed said "why are kids these days so depressed, just enjoy being a kid". Needless to say, I changed faster than I ever have in my life.
You don't have to be a professional athlete to have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Suffered for 15 years with increasingly terrible pain from neck to fingertips, regularly thought I was having a heart attack. A neck specialist told me there was nothing wrong that he could see on my MRI and referred me to a pain management clinic. I was "not a professional athlete and way too young" and clearly didn't "understand the benefits of pain medications". Hi, I am a former addict! Got a referral from my old pal shoulder specialist to a thoracic surgeon. Turns out my nerve and a small vein were split and growing AROUND my rib. Iwas born that way and would have eventually lost my fingers to gangrene. GANGRENE. I am 3 months post op and just celebrated sleeping on my left side for the first time in 20 years. Trust your body and remember "nerves hold grudges" .. once it's damaged the first time, it will need love and support forever.
I suffered hyperemesis gravidarum during my pregnancy. I was really sick. Throwing up all day (20times a day), not able to drink anything. When something wet touched my lips I vomited. After I started vomiting blood and feeling absolutely dreadful I went to the hospitaI, had to stay in the hospital for 5 days, I was dehydrated and received infusions. They released me, saying I need everyday an infusion otherwise I have to stay in the hospital till I stop vomiting and able to drink something (which ended at 30 weeks into my pregnancy). So I went to my gynecologist to talk further steps, first the nurse jells at me: you need to drink, it's important for you and the baby. Like I was on purpose not drinking. Than I show my Ob Gyn the letter of the hospital - she did not believe I was feeling so sick and needed infusions. So I left - without any recommendation/ address to go to get the help I needed and being ridiculed. I changed my Ob Gyn and luckily my GP tooked care of me really well.
My mom was experiencing a lot of pain, and hypersensitivity. Even soft clothes felt like they were full of needles. Her doctor tried several things, then told her it was all in her head. My mom insisted that it was not. Her doctor reluctantly referred her to a neurologist. Neurologist looks her over and goes "Let me see if I can guess everything you're feeling." He then lists every single type of pain that my mom has been experiencing. At my mom's confirmation, he tells her, "You have fibromyalgia." He explains what it is and starts her on medication, with the stipulation that it may take a few more visits and discussions to find the correct strength of medication to get her pain under control. My mom has another appointment with her regular doctor. After hearing her diagnosis, the man scoffs loudly and says "I don't believe in fibromyalgia." My mom basically said "This isn't the effing Easter Bunny, you jerk," and found a new doctor to be the patient of.
Yes, medical team can be opinionated too.. Take 2nd opinion if you feel not treated correctly
I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 8 years old. When I was 33, I had a surgery to try and find where the epilepsy (focal point) started from in my brain. The report from the surgery was sent to my general doctor who then told me I didn't have epilepsy and all of my "so called seizures" were "ticks." I never went back to that doctor. The surgery failed, but there were video recordings, witnesses, and EEG recordings of seizures I had during the surgery/ study (surgical EEG). Such a stupid doctor.
My story isn't that bad compared to others but once I was the last patient of the day in my psychiatrist's waiting room. He literally just walked through the waiting room, handed me my script, and walked out the door without a word to me. It was a good thing I was doing okay at that point, but what if I had been in crisis? I would have probably gotten hysterical at that point. I had another psychiatrist argue with me about my symptoms, claiming they weren't in the textbook. I couldn't possibly be feeling what I said I was feeling, i had to be feeling something else. I only saw him once. When I told another psychiatrist about that he just laughed and said, "How old is he?"
I was in the ER after a motorcycle accident; I had a broken wrist and toe but got off easy overall. At one point, a doctor just grabs and squeezes my broken toe. I scream, and he smiles. He later insists that my broken toe needs to be adjusted - by yanking on it. I was woozy from the medications and was not able to remember his name to report him after, which he was probably counting on.
In my family we faint at medical/squeamish things. When we faint, it's like being sucked into a black hole, having an amazing dream, and then being dragged back to real life in a matter of seconds and it's leaves us feeling horrendous. Because of this, we like to plan for things we know could make us pass out. I went to the local nurse to talk about something (can't remember what but no big deal). She told me that my dad had tricked me and that I was really there for a blood test/injection. She made out like he'd planned it. I got super upset and ran home to have a go at my dad. It turned out it was nothing to do with him but I could never forgive her for making me feel betrayed by my dad
Went to an endocrinologist to deal with my diabetes. He prescribed a med and told me that it "might upset my tummy." My tummy? Don't speak to me as if I'm a child. I'm a grown a*s man. Never went back. Found another doc who treats patients with respect.
2/2. I was furious at their incompetence and wanted to make an official complaint but my wife just wanted to forget about her traumatic experience so we didn't complain, how I wish we had. The thing is, my wife was a midwife herself and had trained with one of the stupid bitches in attendance, she didn't like her before and certainly not afterwards. My son has grown up healthy but was a very needy baby which I believe was due in part to the stress he suffered at birth. My heart still aches at the thought of the unnecessary suffering my wife and son endured in the "care" of those two ¢unts. I have a lot of respect for the NHS, they saved my life and the lives of my wife and son in separate incidents, but I hope those two rot in hell.
