500 years of dominating the classical charts has already established that; can't see how that's flying in the face of public opinion.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Elton John doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves as an all time great. He should be discussed as a Top 5 solo career all time with only Elvis and MJ really being clear cut above him. But no one ever even brings him up in those discussions. I've never seen anyone able to write a coherent and borderline hit level song as quickly as Elton. Give him a sheet of words, they don't even have to be lyrics, and you'll have a hit in 5 minutes. If you don't believe me search "Elton John oven manual song" on YouTube.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Mariah Carey is in fact a musical genius.

What I mean is that for a singer with that kind of voice to have written, co-arranged, and co-produced 95% of her own material is pretty incredible, especially when you take into consideration the way her vocals are layered, her knack for engineering her own vocal climaxes and the way she weaves in different flourishes in each register. Its like she’s paints a canvas with her voice. I simply don't hear as many artists fill an entire song with a range of vocalizations the way she does despite the trashy diva image which I suppose turns most people off.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones You don't need to be an amazing singer to be a worthwhile, talented artist. Taylor Swift can carry a tune but she isn't incredible, yet she really puts on a show and is a great songwriter. I don't really care if an artist autotunes or edits the sound of their voice, especially if it works with the song. Can't sing or play instruments but youve got Garageband and Autotune DOWN? Cool. You can still make good music in my eyes.

The dude who invented Autotune bloody HATES how singers misuse it. It was intended to be a tool for sound engineers to correct microtones off-pitch without having to re-record the entire vocal line.

Many punk bands couldn't really play their instruments, but learnt by doing. All they needed was having something to say and a place where they can play. Later on, as I just said, some would eventually develop some skills in the meantime, others wouldn't have such long careers. Anyway, be it music, be it painting, or something else - while having skills is important, art itself is not necessarily about technique.

It’s called marketing and many talented people are denied a shot at making it big because they don’t fit the image the industry is trying to sell conversely there are people with little talent but have a huge selling power. The entire industry is so messed up. I bet half the songs popular back in the 60’s and 70’s could get nowhere today

I don't think Taylor Swift's a great songwriter, she surely writes music that is palatable, relatable and catchy, I respect the girl's worked hard and found the formula that makes her insane money but her songwriting is very angsty teenager writing on her journal type lyrical style with gems like these: “So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and crazy. That’s fine I’ll tell mine that you’re gay” and "I learned you should never leave a fight unresolved, so you come in wearing a football helmet and said okay, let’s talk” She will not go down in history as a great lyricist, her talent is to make music for the masses and make tons of money from it... again, very impressive but that makes her a great money maker, maybe a great performer (never seen her live!) but she's NOT a great artist.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Huey Lewis and the News. Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

People Online Share Unpopular Opinions On Musicians, Genres, And The Industry, So Here’re 30 Spot-On Ones Music piracy made music better.

Money as a motivation to make music was basically removed from the equation. Nowadays, the people who make music do so mostly because they're artists. Loads of musicians these days are compelled to create to express themselves, because making music is in their soul, not to pander to an audience and make cash.

Obviously this doesn't apply to mainstream music. Luckily for all of us with Spotify, it's now super easy to ignore trashy mainstream nonsense, dig deep and find some real gems.
