109 Times Product Packaging Was So Wrong, People Couldn’t Stay Silent Any Longer
Food packaging waste equals to about one-third of all trash, costing governments billions of dollars each year in disposal expenses. Bored Panda has collected a set of images, proving this huge plastic waste contributor to the global waste crisis could be reduced significantly.
Product packaging solutions often become the subjects of heated debates. While the eco-minded consumers want it to be as minimal as possible (meaning fully recyclable), manufacturers often fire back that they don't want their products to start decomposing in the store or become an easy target to shoplifters and put many layers of wasteful and entirely unnecessary plastic wrapping. And while some of their arguments have reasons behind them, a lot of the time the amount of plastic wrap is needlessly excessive. Do we need a pill to be wrapped in three layers of plastic? Or, better yet, casings for coke cans?
Now, we do agree that a zero waste life can be quite challenging to lead sometimes, but it is something we should all aspire to if we don't want to evacuate from our planet Earth in the near future.

whilst this certainly seems is a complete waste of packaging for most, there are a lot of peole out there with chronic arthritis and other disablilities that makes peeling fruit either incredibly difficult, extremely painful or both. Opening a small plastic tub is nothing compared to peeling an orange, so this sort of thing is a God-send for them.

So if you've not eaten an avocado before, it's like any other fruit; you want it to be soft, but firm at the same time. You cut it and remove the stone any number of ways and you eat the flesh. I'm sure there's some kind of tutorial on Youtube if you're still too stupid to do it.
I appreciate Sobeys' response, but I have been to many grocery stores that either provide a card with instructions detailing how to handle fruit like pomegranates and avocados or provide a Q-Code to a website that has videos explaining the same information. Either is preferable to adding unnecessary packaging to something like a piece of fruit.

This is just a waste, and if someone doesn't know how to cut and de-seed an avocado then it's about time they learned !!!
Lets take away the ability of peoole to learn how to do things and instead take their money for it so other people can do it for them.... how spoiled do you need to be to not be able to open and seed an avocado?? Even if you dont know, there is the internet with many people who can teach you... what a spoiled world...
So what kind of chemical did you put on it to keep it from browning. Plastic wrap has never stopped that from happening, nor have "air tight" containers.

It’s actually kind of a good idea for anyone who doesn’t want to eat an entire avocado at once. If you cut it and wrap up the other half, it gets brown. Seems like the packaging stops that. But I’d never pay that much for an avocado. The brown coloring doesn’t hurt you.

This was some jack-offs douche idea to suck a few extra dollars (or pounds; can’t quite tell) off of quite probably the elderly (this would be convenient and helpful to them), the disabled (same reason as above), or just people who are stupid in general. On one hand, it's a waste of plastic. On the other hand: if I buy an avocado, and I cut it, then it turns out that it is either still to hard, or already turning bad from the inside. So being able to look inside is actually a nice idea. Maybe they should invent an avocado with a window in it :-)

A great idea. I hate it when I buy an avocado or two and one or both have gone bad inside when they are still firm on the outside. I'd much rather buy this and be assured my money isn't going in the trash.
And if you only need 1/2 of the avocado, if the other one is individually shrink wrapped, you can access 1/2 of the other avocado well the second half will stay fresh for a few more days, which wouldn't happen if you cut it yourself
And you know what else sucks? The flavor some of This plastic absorbed in to the fruit. I hate it. Like parmigiano-Reginano(SP). You take and wrap that c**p in a nasty plastic that I am then supposed to still spill 20 bucks for. No thanks. I will take the fresh sliced plastic wrap version.
Love that the store just totally served this person, who in my opinion was not half as clever as they thought. First of all why are you complaining about someone else's experience? You don't even shop in the store? Secondly why are you complaining to the store and not the supplier? The company name is plastered on the packaging, it's not Sobeys who did this. Finally, this is actually really helpful for disabled people. My mother has limited mobility in the hands and products like these ensure she still gets to have a varied diet without relying on others. It provides a small bit of independence in a life that's often reliant on others. But I guess it's more important to b***h about packaging and congratulating yourself on being able to eat an avocado all by yourself. Pfft!

All PET drinks come in packages like this. They are used for storage and carrying around to shops. In my country, they are on ALL PETs in the stores (in case you wish to buy bulk, instead of just one - also for easy carrying). That plastic allows for stacking. You can grab it and carry the whole thing (Trust me, it's tough plastic). And 100% recyclable.

Plastic often contains BPS and to make sure a banana or acocado doesnt brown, it'll be treated with something. So eat something that is even more laden with chemicals than 'just' the usual pesticides.
Before anyone starts railing against waste, please remember that things like pre-peeled fruit are really useful for disabled people.

I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.
You are right in many ways. I used to work produce at a store and we used to "process" the not so good looking fruit into these convenience packaging so we could sell the fruit that was bruised and wouldn't sell whole. TBH the store made more money that way.

Here in the UK we get fined if we don't recycle the right thing in the right bin. I would like to see company's that over package with plastic to be fined and not the end user who has to do actual work and then gets the blame if it isn't right. On the other hand I haven't seen such crazy packaging here either, I think people would go apeshit and the 'newspapers' would have a field day. Also you can unwrap stuff like that at the till and leave it in the shop. However, it's disgusting.

This thread actually made me so sad and angry that I couldn't even finish reading it. It's high time that any company that produces or sells such ridiculously wastefully packaged products starts getting heavily fined. It gets frustrating that the blame is constantly put onto the consumer to be more responsible for their carbon footprint - the recycle! recycle! recycle! warnings. Yes - the consumer can take some responsibility for what they buy - but this kind of wasteful packaging s**t should simply not be allowed, by law. The little bit of domestic recycling we do as individuals is one small step forwards against 100 massive steps back when you see that this kind of insanity still goes on now. Global warming? Pah! We'll worry about that another time. Don't forget to bubblewrap each individual grape on that bunch !
Well many of those packs are anti-theft packs like the USB or SD card ones. And also, we have cucumbers wrapped in plastic in Germany, there are those people thats squish at least a dozen fruit or veggies before they finally choose one. Thats is all consumer related. As someone who used to work the produce in a grocery store I can kind of understand some of that. 1) individually wrapping the produce while wasteful in one way prevents those crazy customers from peeling open a fruit to see how good it is and putting it back in the pile to now rot while they pick some of the un opened fruit 2) what most stores don't tell you is that fresh cut up fruit is not really all that fresh, most times stores will take the whole fruit say watermelon, Cantaloupe, even apples and grapes among others cut them up removing the bad parts and then slicing up the parts that are still good and selling them as convenience (or in some cases fresh fruit salad!) 3) the individual bananas again this is because some customers do not know how to pull apart bananas without pulling the peel from other bananas thus ruining the fruit they don't want... which is probably why you have the packaged unpeeled bananas. Now the individual potatoes I have no idea why!

All of these packages more work, more material, and more time. All of which cost companies money. I'd be curious to see the rational behind these decisions. I suspect some, such as amazon's big box for little things, are to simply save time. I wouldn't be surprised if some was also over-regulation.

At Costco for the electronics and tickets etc. they have these A4 sized cardboard pieces that you take to the counter.

Oh god, I want to weep. I worried the UK needed improvement, but Christ almighty! And the ludicrous thing is, this prep and packaging will hike the price up, yet people are still willing to pay more, as well as trash the planet. For something that won't stay fresh once opened. But I once met a guy from California who was really surprised we don't wrap all our restaurant cutlery in packaging to demonstrate it's clean. Have to admit, didn't encounter than when in California myself, but it does make you wonder. We cannot sanitise the world!!

Load More Replies... I wonder if a lot of the peeled and packaged fruits are to prevent food waste. A lot of how people buy food is based on how it looks. Maybe the companies are taking the fruits that don't look so good and processing them in the hopes people will purchase them instead of letting them go to waste because they have a blemish or a bruise.
You are right in many ways. I used to work produce at a store and we used to "process" the not so good looking fruit into these convenience packaging so we could sell the fruit that was bruised and wouldn't sell whole. TBH the store made more money that way.
Load More Replies... Here in the UK we get fined if we don't recycle the right thing in the right bin. I would like to see company's that over package with plastic to be fined and not the end user who has to do actual work and then gets the blame if it isn't right. On the other hand I haven't seen such crazy packaging here either, I think people would go apeshit and the 'newspapers' would have a field day. Also you can unwrap stuff like that at the till and leave it in the shop. However, it's disgusting.
I feel like any 'fresh fruits/veggies' are not fresh if they've been packaged.

This thread actually made me so sad and angry that I couldn't even finish reading it. It's high time that any company that produces or sells such ridiculously wastefully packaged products starts getting heavily fined. It gets frustrating that the blame is constantly put onto the consumer to be more responsible for their carbon footprint - the recycle! recycle! recycle! warnings. Yes - the consumer can take some responsibility for what they buy - but this kind of wasteful packaging s**t should simply not be allowed, by law. The little bit of domestic recycling we do as individuals is one small step forwards against 100 massive steps back when you see that this kind of insanity still goes on now. Global warming? Pah! We'll worry about that another time. Don't forget to bubblewrap each individual grape on that bunch !
Well many of those packs are anti-theft packs like the USB or SD card ones. And also, we have cucumbers wrapped in plastic in Germany, there are those people thats squish at least a dozen fruit or veggies before they finally choose one. Thats is all consumer related. Also, Amazon, are you serious? Self made problems, buy local.

As someone who used to work the produce in a grocery store I can kind of understand some of that. 1) individually wrapping the produce while wasteful in one way prevents those crazy customers from peeling open a fruit to see how good it is and putting it back in the pile to now rot while they pick some of the un opened fruit 2) what most stores don't tell you is that fresh cut up fruit is not really all that fresh, most times stores will take the whole fruit say watermelon, Cantaloupe, even apples and grapes among others cut them up removing the bad parts and then slicing up the parts that are still good and selling them as convenience (or in some cases fresh fruit salad!) 3) the individual bananas again this is because some customers do not know how to pull apart bananas without pulling the peel from other bananas thus ruining the fruit they don't want... which is probably why you have the packaged unpeeled bananas. Now the individual potatoes I have no idea why!
Why do people package fruits, and veggies, when they are already packaged naturally! Such silliness!
Why on earth do people buy stuff online when they can buy the same tiny little thing in a shop around their corner... and then they hate the waste?? ridiculous people.
Some of the Amazon post are wasteful, yes, but people complain about things being broken during shipping. They're just covering their asses.
See this everyday...We recycle, some don't, but either way, some common sense would be a better track!
Besides the waste there's the pain in the a*s factor. I've bought stuff embossed in bulletproof plastic that damn near needed a chainsaw to open.
All of these packages more work, more material, and more time. All of which cost companies money. I'd be curious to see the rational behind these decisions. I suspect some, such as amazon's big box for little things, are to simply save time. I wouldn't be surprised if some was also over-regulation.
Well honey sometimes people can't peel an orange because of arthritis or chemo. Been there done that and during my chemo there's no way I could have filled an orange so this would have been quite handy for me especially since I lived alone and went through the entire process alone. This entire post is people complaining about something they don't understand. Just because you don't know what something is for doesn't mean it is useless. Some of these packages address legitimate problems.
A lot of these seem to be Amazon sucking at packaging. Maybe if Amazon paid their employees better they would care to pay attention to how they package socks, but then Jeff Bezos might have SLIGHTLY less money.
They think that because they are such a big company, they can do what they want without consequences. Typical of arrogant fat cats.

Oh god, I want to weep. I worried the UK needed improvement, but Christ almighty! And the ludicrous thing is, this prep and packaging will hike the price up, yet people are still willing to pay more, as well as trash the planet. For something that won't stay fresh once opened. But I once met a guy from California who was really surprised we don't wrap all our restaurant cutlery in packaging to demonstrate it's clean. Have to admit, didn't encounter than when in California myself, but it does make you wonder. We cannot sanitise the world!!
How do you know people can easily get off their butt and go shopping. Maybe some people can't. Did you ever think of that?
