While the United States has largely considered itself as the greatest country in the world for the last few decades, the statistics tell us that there are areas where things can definitely be improved.

In military might and defence spending the U.S. is undisputedly number one. But in other areas, more important aspects of human wellbeing such as education, life expectancy, happiness, gender and income equality and healthcare, there are more mixed results.

The U.S. healthcare system in particular is a continuing source of bafflement for many, who are accustomed to a degree of protection against the double disaster of poor health followed by financial ruin.

While American hospitals and medical facilities are world class, they are also incredibly expensive and available only to those able to afford them. We at Bored Panda have compiled a list of examples that highlight the inadequacies of the current healthcare system, while polarised politicians continue to argue about their vision for its future. Scroll down to check them out below, and stay healthy over there in America, y’all.

I took off to Europe way back in 1971, at the tender young age of 19. When I landed, I felt as though I had come home! Like many Americans, my grandparents were 1st generation immagrents, and like many Scandinavians, they settled in Minnesota, where my Dad was born in 1919.

That is the cost if you go private. In Spain we have free universal health care so you don’t have to pay anything for a hip replacement or anything else.

Why Should I Tell You My Name
Community Member

Ok I literally calculated this stuff and if you add up the costs of the things specified in this list, you get around $30,000 cost using the cheapest options.

Tiffany Sparks
Community Member

I had a PAO at Duke and it cost 50,000... I paid $4000. That being said, my first hip surgeon doesn't do invasive hip surgeries, just soft tissue reconstruction, my second one does nothing but hip replacements and PAOs. I left the hospital 2 days early, 3 days after surgery, i was about a week ahead, and at 6 months i was back to normal(running, jumping, squats with weight, jumping squats with weight...), which usually takes 12 months. I was also referred up to Duke because I have EDS and was likely to fail, not be normal, or be damaged by the average hip surgeon. It also should have taken a lot longer to heal due to EDS as well. If i went to spain, it's possible I would still be on crutches and spent an additional 3000 plus plane tickets.

Krum Sotirov

I offered to many Americans with serious conditions medical tourism that is offered by many countries: Bulgaria, Mexico, Philippines. High quality medical care for the fraction of the cost. No one I spoke to even consider it. You should at least research it before you dismiss that option. Especially when it is a matter of life or death. Americans deserve the American health care system price tag if they are so sure it is so great.

Thore Rehbach

I have an artificial disc replacement which did cost me nothing. installed by one of the best surgeons in Europe and even got paid 3/4 of my normal income for staying at home for 9 month to recover...

All this talk about "free " healthcare is complete BS! In Denmark, people pay for it via taxes... and that's 1000000 times better than the US system ! (American here , nearly 45 years in Scandinavia).

Here in Finland every citizen have health insurace because it is paid from the taxes. And because of that insurance also the poor people can afford healthcare. It is funny to see when some Finnish people complain that a prescription drug is 'too expensive' if it costs over 30 euros per month when in USA the exactly same drug is usually 3 to 10 times more expensive.
