While the United States has largely considered itself as the greatest country in the world for the last few decades, the statistics tell us that there are areas where things can definitely be improved.

In military might and defence spending the U.S. is undisputedly number one. But in other areas, more important aspects of human wellbeing such as education, life expectancy, happiness, gender and income equality and healthcare, there are more mixed results.

The U.S. healthcare system in particular is a continuing source of bafflement for many, who are accustomed to a degree of protection against the double disaster of poor health followed by financial ruin.

While American hospitals and medical facilities are world class, they are also incredibly expensive and available only to those able to afford them. We at Bored Panda have compiled a list of examples that highlight the inadequacies of the current healthcare system, while polarised politicians continue to argue about their vision for its future. Scroll down to check them out below, and stay healthy over there in America, y’all.

Because their constitution is outdated. The second amendment made sense when America didn't had an army to defend their country against foreign aggressors, in this case, the British. In some states it was mandatory to have gun, because there was no army...now it's a nonsense, in my opinion.

Here in Finland every citizen have health insurace because it is paid from the taxes. And because of that insurance also the poor people can afford healthcare. It is funny to see when some Finnish people complain that a prescription drug is 'too expensive' if it costs over 30 euros per month when in USA the exactly same drug is usually 3 to 10 times more expensive.

At first I would like to know the whole story about the bill. No normal birth and even 48h in hospital would cost that much. More important there is special things like cardiology and radiology what where they for? But then still. My sister in law stayed in hospital for one month before birth and the baby one month after birth. The Bill was around 50k € and healthcare will pay for it. This is a dramatic difference

There had to have been some complications with this birth. There's no way this is a standard childbirth medical bill even in the US. Room and Care has to be an extended stay at the ICU for mother and or baby. Also, I don't see any Maternity Ward charges. Is it normally included in Room and Care?

As my partner has pointed out, we never get a bill in the UK, so we don't actually know how much our hospital stays cost. The services we get do cost something, but we think they are free. But at least if you're jobless or homeless, you can still be seen and treated by the NHS and not booted out to die.

My cousin gave birth to twins and it was an emergency delivery pretty much before she arrived at the hospital. Just the medical bill for the birth of the twins was over a million dollars which all was covered by the US government or truthfully the taxpayers as the children were 50% Native-American but she was liable for her own medical care which luckily she had good insurance.

I was hit by a car, taken to ER, spent 3 weeks in ICU. Kaiser wrestled me away from UCLA who saved my life, and took me off all the drugs. I went into a series of violent seizures and would have let me die had my sister, the local prosecutor, not intervened. My best guess? I was never again going to pay the monthly "insurance" bill and they were right. God bless Medicare....

The only reason that our society exists today is because in times of need we helped each other cause we are human. say this baby was due to rape or something else horrible do u still believe society should just let this spoor mother pay for her own baby. what lengths does a situation have to go to for people to finally take responsibility. say if u were shot on the street randomly would u expect the society to pay for you? after all its according to american standards ur responsibility

Room and Care 428k$, is it possible?

Ruth Rich
Community Member

Yep. I had a c-section and a baby in the NICU (intensive care for babies). He was there for 10 days. Everything that happened there was about 250,000K. And there was another bill for 35,000 for the room for me (I was there 4 days) and 85,000 for the bed for my son in the NICU for 10 days. Just a side note one gauze pad was $12 dollars. And I needed Tums and got them through the pharmacy at the hospital rather than do the illegal thing and have my huz buy me some. $100 for 2 tums. This is truth. Bills are this high and crazy. And as a Chronic patient I have to police every bill because they will tap on anything. I had an ER visit where they gave me a blood gas test which I didn't need but a young intern wanted practice. He couldn't get my artery & gave up. ER still charged me almost 1000K for that test.
