Parenthood is very rewarding and quite adventurous. Your life gets turned upside down, and you're doing things you never thought you would: early mornings, late nights, constant stress and pressure, yet a tiny smile from your little human is quick to fix any of your worries.

You spend a few exciting months preparing for your baby's arrival, figuring out all the whys and hows. Probably constantly thinking about how you could make your child's life extra special and satisfying. One of the scariest and most vital decisions for new parents or parents-to-be is choosing your offspring's name. Some folks stick to fairly common ones – others take this assignment far too seriously.

"Poke fun at awful names and naming culture. No name is safe" – an online community with over 41K members that dedicates itself to "unique" names continues to entertain its members with odd examples, and BP collected a few of the best ones.

Sharing a sense of humour is a great thing, even if the one you're sharing it with is yourself

Everyone has names, all 7.9 billion of us – and they all mean different things to people, even if it's something common. It's exciting to think that, at one point, our folks decided to sit together and go through all the possible options that they found appealing, before settling on the one that they thought would fit our story.

it's understandable that each parent wants the absolute best for their child. You want them to have a fulfilling life, filled with amazing memories and great success. Incidentally, some might think that the name will mysteriously affect their offspring's future, so they make it their top priority to come up with something meaningful and maybe even unusual.

Every generation had a certain set of names that was quite popular and up until a decade ago, it wasn't uncommon to encounter a few peers with the same one as yours. Whether it was a playground, a school or your workplace – there were always a few Davids and Sarahs around.

Who knows, maybe back then folks weren't bothered by the popularity of their baby's name and the only thing that mattered to them was that it wouldn't get their offspring in trouble with their mates. Mockery and bullying could seriously mess with a young person's mind, and who wants their child to go through all this trouble?

Sadly, kids don't have any filter. Little ones will say everything that comes to their minds and they won't think twice about it. This type of behavior could be blamed on multiple things: a lack of discipline, a simple thought outburst that often happens at their age – whatever it might be, chances are your child will still get bullied. As we all know, looks play a crucial role when it comes to bullying since commenting on someone's appearance is considered to be a norm even when you hit 40, but having a wacky name also messes with the way your peers perceive you.

Having an odd name could lead to some unpleasant issues, for instance, offensive nicknames. And when a problem of a similar character occurs, it's extremely hard to get folks to view you as you, and not as the nickname you've been given. When you're young, you don't have the time to think about how uniqueness will conquer the world someday, all you care about is fitting in, and preferably with the popular folks.

Hey, the pets aren't going to get picked on in school and they'll never have to spend the first six years of their lives learning to spell their names and the rest of their lives telling people "Yes, that's really my name. It's really spelled like that." So for your fur/fish/farm etc babies, go wild. Get it all out before you gotta name a human

We have cats called "the black one" and "the other one". They are both black. We thought that it would be funny to call one cat "the black one" and then we thought about name for the other one. And TheBlackOne was always everywhere, so we quite often said "and where is the other one?" until it became her name.

That happens to us. We come up with some cute official name that the vet's office keeps using, for each new cat, but we end up calling them some descriptive, generic name, sometimes for a couple decades. We have had Little Kitty, Girl Kitty, Boy Kitty, Orange Kitty, Blackie, Fatty and Grey Monster among others. For some reason, Fred was still called Fred, for all of his 21 years.

My dude is Finn. Kind of a long story. We named him Finn after we found him on the street, thinking he was a boy. Then, we were told he was a female. So we named her Lucy. Then the vet reminded that and said he was a fixed male, so we named him Finnegan. Like, Finn again. His full name is technically Finn Lucy Finnegan. But Finn suits him fine

My family cats name is Jonny, short for Jonny cat, The cat in black. (he's a tuxedo cat) the name is a reference to Jonny Cash and his song, the Man in black. To be clear, none of my family likes country music with the exception of Jonny Cash. His music is just very special and sentimental to all of us. My brother and I have done that a lot, like giving fancy names to our cats and other pets, and our mom always ended up ruining the fun by calling the animals very basic, double syllable names so that "they have it easier hearing and learning it". Latest example of this is a ram we fostered (long story short, some neighbour had bought him with the prospect of killing and eating him, but he escaped from there and took shelter in our horses' park, so we compensated the neighbour and the ram could stay with us). My brother wanted to name him "Justin". Our mother decided to call him "Bibi".

When called out one cat Kleo but her actually name Was KleoKatra Tasselhoff Purr-foot the kitten of doom. We also had a massive and fully orange tabby long hair but we call FF, it stood for Fat F***ER. He was born in the first place I lived when I moved out of my parents. The cat had 4 kittens 2 boys and 2 girls. FF was twice the size of the other kittens and would drink all the milk out of a nipple then go try to push one of his siblings of the nipple the were on even when there were other free nipples. So we ended up saying he Fat F***er let the others get some food .

my dog, flip, short for fliperama (arcade in portuguese), because he jumps a lor, also my grandma's dog is name leide, lady written by a brazilian, her cat is named bartolomeu, her parrot is dimi (jimmy with a brazilian twist), brazilians have the best/worst names, I met a girl named laide dhi (what happens when a brazilian tried to name her children over lady diana), some dhiennifers and a guy named babbington (and it gets worse, he was BABBINGTON THE SECOND and was of japanese ancestry), also its funny because here regular names that americans use for people (john, george, jimmy, pete, bob, etc) are used more often for animals than for people

We had a cat named C.A.T. We called her the C-A-T around the dogs when we first found her as a stray and weren't sure we were gonna keep her (or try to rehome her) because they'd go bonkers when they heard the word cat. I suggested that be her actual name and it stuck. That was on her vet paperwork at long as she lived. We'd generally call her "mama cat" though, because who calls their pets by their actual name? 😂

We had a cat named by my husband's much younger sister when she was a kid. She first decided he was named Midnight but then told us that his full name was Midnight Banana. Our current cats that my husband and I named are Glyph short for Petroglyph because he is a red classic tabby. He also sometimes gets called Glyphord the small red cat. Then there is Chaplin our tuxedo boy because he has a Charlie Chaplin mustache, he is Glyph's accidental nephew and Chaplin also has an aunt named Charlie who is my in-laws cat. Chaplin's mother is named Lucy Fur named by my SIL this time when she was a teenager instead of a kid. Lastly there is Inkwell because he is an all black cat with a plume like tail and it is a play off Maxwell.

Kacchan would name his cat that. "This is Missy. Short for Missle Launcher." Said with a perfectly straight face.

ha ha my cat is named C4... not because of his explosive temper or what we found in the litter box, but because we were looking to adopt and they hadn't name the kittens yet and he was in container C4.

I had a cat called Jones ('cos he looked like the cat in Alien) but it was also short for Mr. Derek Jones

Lots of my many cats have names like that... Leo Butterball and his sister Chickpea, Medicine Hat Clyde, Michael Little Crow...there's a reason behind all of them. We mostly just used their 'government names' at the vet.

My cat is Lucy. It’s short for Lucifer, the almighty bringer of mischief, mayhem, and toe beans. Her brother is Linus.

Though, this decade is all about celebrating the individuality of each person, and maybe this is exactly the reason why we've been stumbling upon so many over-complicated names. People are eager to be unique and special, they want to differ from others and to be their own special person. Back in the days, it was rewarding to name your child after a grandparent or a significant person in your life, but nowadays it's all about individual identity. Fitting in is not "cool" anymore, which is amazing and very freeing – however, some people take this celebration of individuality the wrong way.

Prince John : Such an unusual name, "Latrine." How did your family come by it? Latrine : We changed it in the 9th century. Prince John : You mean you changed it TO "Latrine"? Latrine : Yeah. Used to be "Sh*thouse." Prince John : It's a good change. That's a good change!

By all means, naming your child something different is wonderful and empowering, but why would somebody want to call their baby that will eventually become a 50-year-old office worker Midnight or Calliope? It seems that in today's world, a name is more than what your friends or your teachers call you – it's an aesthetic that your parents made up in their minds, a social media handle, if you will.

Nominative determinism (just to expand on this a little for those who don't already know) is where Flora Baker gets a job making cakes or goes into botany (kinda a twofer), Milly Owche becomes a dentist, or DJ Turner has a career in music, etc.

How to create a baby name. Take a normal name. Force 5 vowels into it. And a Y. Bonus points if you can jam an X in there.

Guess what her nickname would be. Namers should always think about nicknames and what the initials spell. I went out with a guy whose initials were F. U. K. A woman in my office was named Ana Lyses. Worse, some applications used our first name and last initial, so she'd appear on the form as A**L.

Really? All these examples of ostensibly loving parents giving kids names that guarantee they will be picked on in school and he's whining about "Chad"?

As a Millennial, I would rather shoot myself in the head than name a child anything like that. Gender neutral, maybe, but "Oaklyn" and"Paisleigh" make me want to bash my head against a sharp object. Came across some kids named Lance, and Cypress the other day... I wanted to either laugh, or weep uncontrollably because of the names those poor children were stuck with.
