I don’t understand that logic, since when can you only call your friends by their first name. I understand there is an etiquette when it comes to teachers, elders and royalty etc but not every Tom, D**k or Harry.

Excuse me, um........but I, being a retired college professor, have always considered the great authors to be my very best friends.

In Israel we are super informal. we call school/university teachers, bosses, lawyers, even clients by their first name. probably the only exception where we are more formal is with doctors, where we do call them "Doctor [LastName]"
