Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 44, was seen by many as a comedian and sitcom actor who stumbled into the presidency. But when Russia’s troops invaded Ukraine’s capital Kyiv on the 24th of February and attacked the country’s cities, Zelenskyy appealed to all citizens, and the world, to defend Ukraine in an unprovoked war that shocked the entire world.
“Russia treacherously attacked our state this morning, as Nazi Germany did during World War Two,” Zelenskyy addressed on Thursday. “Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and won’t give up its freedom, no matter what Moscow thinks.” Today, against all Kremlin’s odds, Zelenskyy is standing alone with Ukrainians against Putin.
“‘Captain Ukraine,’ the first ‘true’ president of Ukraine, a hero, a leader. I would have never thought I would see people use these terms to refer to Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” wrote Anna Myroniuk, a journalist at the Kyiv Independent, who said she, like many others, didn’t believe, and in fact, didn’t vote for Zelenskyy. As the world is watching the 5th day of Ukraine fighting Russia’s invasion with bated breath, you wonder who this unlikely hero is.

Two years ago, during the commemoration in Israel of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in January, Zelenskyy told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu two stories of Ukraine’s heroes: a Crimean Muslim woman and a Catholic priest who each saved scores of Jewish children.
Then, he added one more story “about a family of four brothers.” Zelenskyy said: “Three of them, their parents and their families became victims of the Holocaust. All of them were shot by German occupiers who invaded Ukraine. The fourth brother survived… Two years after the war, he had a son, and in 31 years, he had a grandson. In 40 more years, that grandson became president, and he is standing before you today, Mr. Prime Minister.”

While Putin was accusing Ukraine of “genocide” and talking of the need to “de-Nazify” the country, Zelenskyy remained dignified and articulate. He delivered multiple inspirational speeches that touched Ukrainians battling for their country in an unprecedented war created by Putin, and brought them hope.

Zelenskyy is married and has two children. He graduated from the Kyiv National Economic University in 2000 with a law degree, but chose a different career path. He formed the comedy troupe Kvartal 95 with other actors in 1997 and in 2003, the group began producing television programs, ABC News reported.
During his inaugural address in 2019, Zelenskyy told lawmakers: “I do not want my picture in your offices: the President is not an icon, an idol or a portrait. Hang your kids’ photos instead, and look at them each time you are making a decision.”

According to DW, just a few years ago, Zelenskyy was an actor and entertainer who satirized corruption and mismanagement in Ukraine by playing the Ukrainian president in the popular television series “Servant of the People.”
If we look back at when the idea of becoming the head of state wasn’t even on Zelenskyy’s mind, back in 2006, he made headlines for winning Ukraine’s Dancing with the Stars. The footage was recently shared by Kat Abu, a Twitter user who uploaded a video of the dance contest in its Ukrainian version from 16 years ago. It has gone viral since, showing a much different, relaxed version of today’s leader.

This man is FINALLY getting the recognition he deserves. While his creative products (Servant of the People being one) are terrific, Zelenskyy has exhibited more TRUE leadership in the last five or so days than those of the "leader" nations have in their entire time in office. Zelenskyy shows a real love for country and his people. As a Ukrainian-American, I would love to meet him someday and shake his hand, to tell him how he is a true example of bravery, passion, and vigilance.

As a Ukrainian-American who not only enjoyed Zelenskyy's creative enterprises (Servant of the People), but also his passion for his nation, I am happy this man is FINALLY getting the recognition he deserves. Zelenskyy has, in the past 5+ days, shown greater love of his people, true bravery, and a desire to fight for what's right, than any of the "leading" nations put together. This is an example of a true leader. It is my dream to one day shake his hand and thank him for what he's done. :)

Well, you're correct that it's not a popular POV unless you are far to the political right. To be fair, Près Zelenskyy and his govt are partially responsible because they refused to roll over and do what Putin wanted. So, a country can't just send in their application to NATO and immediately get their membership sticker and secret decoder ring. It's a process, I'm sure you already know. Their application began in 2008, was shelved in 2010 and restarted in 2014. Ukraine began trying in earnest in 2019. So, Zelenskyy has only been in office for 5ish yrs. In a way, this all feels like a giant chess game, if you think about it. Russia is playing chess. They've manipulated, coerced, faked-out, hedged their bets, watched... now that all of the players are on the board, the game starts. Not only have his creative endeavors been enjoyable and meaningful, but his passion and dedication to his people is a role model for leaders everywhere. He showed the world these past 5+ days what it means to be a self-giving, self-sacrificial, and emboldened leader. THAT'S what we need to see in leaders today.

Even most of the "bad guys" in cyberhack groups are telling Putin "bítch you're on your own", and the only one supporting him (Conti) got internals exposed including links to the Kremlin, while Anonymous reportedly has declared outright cyber war against Russia. They say war is made by men of old using men of youth. Zelensky is 44, and isn't sitting in a Kastle watching and communicating orders from a distance.
Sorry. Ready for the downvotes but here is an unpopular POV. Zelensky is at least as responsible for this war as Putin. Under his government the Ukraine repeatedly sought NATO membership despite 100 % knowledge that this would force Russia to take action against them. It was stupidity on both sides that led to this point and now the civilian populations are paying for it
Well, you're correct that it's not a popular POV unless you are far to the political right. To be fair, Près Zelenskyy and his govt are partially responsible because they refused to roll over and do what Putin wanted. Damn them for wanting to keep their country free from a dictatorial madman. So, a country can't just send in their application to NATO and immediately get their membership sticker and secret decoder ring. It's a process, I'm sure you already know. Their application began in 2008, was shelved in 2010 and restarted in 2014. Ukraine began trying in earnest in 2019. So, Zelenskyy has only been in office for 5ish yrs. I just can't agree or find fact to accept your theory of Ukraine's fault. It is evil, a horror, at the very least stupidity and sadly, unbearably the people will pay the ultimate price.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a modern Maccabee. Jews everywhere are proud have him as a member of our tribe. He is incredible. I am glad that I share DNA with him. Not much DNA, mind you, but as we are both Ukrainian Ashkenazi Jews, we are possibly 5th or 6th cousins or something. Stand with Ukraine!
In a way, this all feels like a giant chess game, if you think about it. Russia is playing chess. They've manipulated, coerced, faked-out, hedged their bets, watched... now that all of the players are on the board, the game starts. Putin's major error is thinking he sees 3 moves ahead without ACTUALLY knowing his opponent(s). He's learning now, and I hope his King is checked, and he lays it down. #IStandForUkraine!
As a Ukrainian American, I have been so proud to watch Zelenskyy's work these past few years. Not only have his creative endeavors been enjoyable and meaningful, but his passion and dedication to his people is a role model for leaders everywhere. He showed the world these past 5+ days what it means to be a self-giving, self-sacrificial, and emboldened leader. THAT'S what we need to see in leaders today.
This is what real leadership, real courage and real patriotism look like. I'm in the USA, and I wish there was more we were doing or more that we as individuals could do for Ukraine, but it looks like Ukraine is in in very capable hands
