Owners Of This Mansion Mysteriously Fled And Left A Lot Of Expensive, Luxurious, And Rare Items Behind (34 Pics)

This mansion in Kings Langley in Hertfordshire, England, looks like it was abandoned several years ago but it remains eerily well-preserved. Recently, an urban explorer who doesn’t want to disclose their name visited the mysterious estate and came back with a series of haunting photos, documenting all the mansion’s hidden treasures.

It looks as though its former occupants left hastily, maybe even in the middle of the night. A watch stuck in time lies untouched on a bedside table while designer clothes are still stacked up on rails in a bedroom. And [they] must have had some cash as the threads are by labels including Yves St Laurent, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

There are empty fish tanks lined up in a grand hallway and a dishwasher still has plates inside washed and ready to use

A potted plant is still alive in its pot on a windowsill next to a telescope lined up ready for its owner to look at the night sky

And even more eerily, a half-finished game of chess is placed on a dining room table, a further nod to the fact that the house’s occupants may have fled hastily

The urban explorer who took these images said they had never seen such a well-preserved house

“I’ve seen a lot of these places and most are in a far worse state than this one,” the traveler told Bored Panda

“It was literally like the people who lived there got up in the middle of the night and ran without taking anything”

Forget the mail. How recent are the personal bathing products? Is the water turned on? The toilet and bath looked good, the floors in some rooms are still very clean (no heavy dust), and plants alive without *water*?! Ditto the clean-ish windows, etc. Somehow, I don't think this is as abandoned as all that. Just my opinion.

I was going to point out the same things, the plant thing is bugging me. there doesn't look like there is any mold damage around the plants or wood rot that would indicate there's a leak near enough to keep them watered.

No wonder the "traveller" wants to be anonymous. Entering someone else's house without leave is illegal... and now showing off all the items and cars to people who can identify the building and go raid it for possible valuables? The reason the people left might be tragic and/or mysterious, but someone travelling around exposing other people's homes and belongings like this, is also very unpleasant in my opinion.

Urbexers do it all of the time, and most of them are careful to consider not showing any personal effects that might lead to who the people were. All efforts are usually taken to hide family photos / mail / correspondance / etc. in the forthcoming photos or videos. A lot of urbexer's will research the location of the home, by visiting property appraiser's website before posting their photos/videos of the house. They leave everything AS THEY FOUND IT. They do not steal from the home. Now, vandals might. But urbexers are careful to NOT give away locations. Clearly, this is another house that is abandoned. I say, no harm done. I'm fascinated by their videos anyways. I love seeing stuff like this.

Often someone does know but they can't say because if you search the details you can find the names of the previous tenants and the address of the building. I watched a video about a house that was abandoned and in the comment section people had said where the house was and what had happened- the person who posted the video didn't say anything about it though. In that case the owners had been kicked out of the house and arrested for animal cruelty. They left everything in the house, and nobody had done anything with the house because it smelled and was full of so much stuff. So it just sits.

How is this house not ransacked? Live on busy street, with neighbors, go on a holiday for two weeks and your house is broken into, but an empty, secluded house with designer clothes inside is untouched? And no one minds that property taxes aren’t paid, utility bills, etc? Strange story.

Judging by the fact that those religious pictures are Christian Orthodox I would say it's probably true that they were Russian. Other countries that have a majority of Christian Orthodox populations are around the Balkan

They were Greek. The mansion was previously occupied by real estate tycoon Athanasios Tachmintzis, 70, whose wife Sharon, from North Wales, died aged 52 in May 2004. Mr Tachmintzis is said to have acquired the property in 1999 and lived there for about 18 years before he disappeared suddenly.

"Fled hastily" Really, what are the chances in that? The owner died. Either they had no heirs and now the state is sitting on the estate not knowing what to do with it, or they had heirs who are likewise rich and not interested in the estate. That happens.

You can see that someone went through the stuff, methodically. From my point of view, the stuff that is left there is more or less worthless, if you don't want to try your luck on ebay or a flea market. That speaks for an uninterested heir. He went trough the things, took what he liked, but not the heavy things and stuff that is a hassle to sell. That leaves the cars though. Why would someone leave them there?

This would be a great basis for a fictional thriller. Example: the family is in witness protection (as it's called in the US) and their cover is blown, so they have to flee for their lives, no time to pack anything.

I have my doubts about the authenticity of this. A house plant still alive after not being watered for four years? Not likely, unless it's positioned under a leak in the roof. Also, where is the dust? If I don't vacuum for one week there is a thin layer of dust on everything. I can't believe there wouldn't be a thick layer on everything in this house after four years.

There is more information on the Daily Mail. Still no update on the whereabouts of the owner though. But someone is definitely taking care of that potted plant. Also, did anyone else read Kings Landing instead of Kings Langley? That would have been something. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8339211/Creepy-abandoned-Hertfordshire-mansion-owned-mysterious-Greek-property-tycoon.html

The loan from the Russian Mafia was overdue so they repossessed the house and disappeared the former owners. Nobody touches anything out of fear of the Mafia. The Mafia leaves it as is as an example to others and because even they can't navigate the English legal system. The Baronesses secret lover sneaks in at night and waters her plants. Okay, stay at home may be getting to me just a tad.

Maybe it's a vacant house that was rented by a film production company and all that stuff was moved in recently. That could explain the cleanliness. Either they'd have had it cleaned before installing the props or the property owners would have it cleaned regularly in hopes of being able to rent it out or sell it.

These aren't genuine golliwog dolls. If you read this description - "Golliwogs are black-skinned dolls with exaggerated lips and frizzy hair and are based on a character created by kids’ author Florence Kate Upton in the 19th century. The dolls were created during a racist era and are based on minstrels – the demeaning ridiculing of black people by whites in black make up". Not sure if that makes them better though... I don't know why people think they are creepy or at least not any more creepy than any old doll.

Pictures were taken from hooks and china was moved out of a cabinet so that the fugitives could grab what was hidden behind. They didn't expect to leave as precipitously as they did but this place was never HOME to them.

The house and everything it contains looks cool, I think I can safely speculate what the reason behind the urgency of leaving was about, based on the missing photos of the past owners... run from the cartels, would be a safe bet, because alien abductions and haunted houses usually leave photos behind...

This is called breaking and entering, and is a crime. Just stay out of people's homes. Someone still owns this home, so stay off of property that isn't yours. It isn't your business why they let it fall into disrepair--lots of lovely old piles face this fate, because upkeep is horrendously expensive. But this is private property and the home belongs to someone. Stop breaking and entering!

I worked for a moving company when I was in college and we packed up several homes like this, where someone died and the estate went into probate, or one sad home where the family had been killed in an auto accident, the wife's sister retrieved a few items, and there were no other family members to deal with the remaining items.

Fled back to Russia?? Nonsense! Rather maybe one of ex-KGB agents or oligarch's confidants felling AWAY from Putin and his cronies. Or the Secret Service whisking them away in a witness protection attempt. (Remember Scribal poisoning case?) Another scenario - one family member murdered everyone else and fled. Look for bodies!

To me there's little mystery. There are people so wealthy they can and do just grab their passports and wallets/purses and go. They could be anywhere in the world, including Great Britain. There are likely caretakers of a sort or squatters. The photographer is totally discredited because they also staged photos. Yes, the two Golliwogs were moved. I wonder if the brought in the amaryllis, since the rest of the plants are vines that have worked their way inside.

I call BS on this. Abandoned four years ago? With the bathroom sink looking as though more years have past and at the same time the white sofas are in pristine condition and there is a live houseplant! No way. It may be the water leak that led to the ceiling caving in plus stopping all further payments to the previous owner or something like that.

So many clues. Why is there a pack of rolling papers on the table in the last photo? Who uses those for "real" cigarettes these days? Hardly anybody. And clues: The household cleaners and toothpaste box and bottles of shampoos don't seem like they are from America. The license tag on the front of that one care was definitely NOT American. There is a black leather biker's jacket left behind--covered in mold, indicating high humidity and a lack of controlled A/C in the house. Why so many black dolls? Who has those anymore? And why so much gilt-edge china stacked up on the coffee tables? That is definitely not an American custom-- more like European. They loved backgammon. That is generally not thought of as an American game, but a European one too. Perhaps they were Russian, Mongolian, Asian? You never know why this happens. They could have all been killed in a car crash.... all family is overseas. It would explain why everything was left. And a leaky roof=damages.

A lot of the furniture looks *very* cheap, even with the nice piano (because pianos are a hassle to move, I reckon a previous owner left it there when they sold the place). And I get the feeling the people who lived there were kind of a mess, anyway, even if the house had been ransacked. I hope they weren't killed!

So basically it looks like the photo snapper was breaking and entering into a house where someone else still owns it, and (from all appearances) may be either living there, or regularly making visits. It is one thing to go into a place that is clear;y empty, unoccupied, and in ruins. But this does not appear to be the case here. I think this is highly illegal, and Bored Panda should not be promoting this.

Well there's a longstanding tradition of opulent English country manors being abandoned and left to become rotting and fusty. We all know what the solution is: a brash, self-made American business executive will buy the place, fix it up, but also add some element of commercialization to it like making it a bed and breakfast. That'll violate some longstanding notions of the traditions of the place, causing the neighboring, elderly English nobles to have their monocles drop into their Earl Grey Tea when their jaw drops once they hear of these new plans!

To my opinion Russian kids would not play with colored dolls, or at least it's super rare. Maybe they were important people that had to be escorted fast. Maybe mafia got rid of them. Or maybe the family just died in car crash (hope not!). Anyway, not nice getting into someone else's property.

I think the dolls are cute and I hope they were much loved by their small owner. It does feel very racist that your only problem with them appears to be because they are black. Seriously, get a grip.
