‘Peloton’ Stationary Bicycles Get Flooded With Memes After Their ‘Luxurious’ Ad Faces Backlash
262Kviews
There are a few things in this world that just don't make any sense. Amongst those are funny commercials of people eating salad and having a good time as well as photos of people working out while having the time of their life (also looking better and sexier than ever). Now, more than ever, people are getting tired of being forced fed fake imagery by the luxury brands of a life that is impossible to achieve. So, it's only fair that they are fighting against these lies with the one thing they know best - funny memes.
Recently, Twitter user mocked a company that is advertising stationary bicycles
It seems that what people hated the most was the unattainable image of a fancy lifestyle the Peloton stationary bike company was advertising, and how somehow you could easily be a part of this world just by purchasing this gym machine. Scroll down to see all the jokes yourself, and don't forget to tell us what you think in the comments!

Apparently, 16 (as of the time I posted my comment) do not understand the fine art of sarcasm...Tomas Holicka was being facetious...he even used the symbols (a slash with an “s” for sarcasm), that many people use to indicate use of sarcasm, at the end of his comment. And his comment is actually really funny...
Well yeah, aside from the fireplace peacock, it’s the best work of art in the nation!
And I gather up my thousands of friends and do a Yogaton (yes, I know, yogathon, but, come on...)
Sometimes I also listen to forest sounds on my $2.99 zen app on my iPhone X to help me feel like I'm biking outside.
Those people down there are looking right up your nose, keep it clean please.
When I travel by air, I always book three adjacent seats for my emotional support companion, my peloton bike. It has such a calming effect on me, it induces this sense of everything being as it should, all is well and good. Traveling without it would seem pointless, and soo stressful.
And I also keep 7 pairs of Peloton leggings in my wardrobe so that I always have a clean pair
Is it just me or does the settee have a relaxed/not bothered about peloton expression?
That way all can see how rich and fit you are. What a gift for the needy homeless people.
For $2245 that thing better exercise me even while I'm asleep.
for that price it better get my but of Alp d'Huez.
You can buy something for that for 20$.
If I buy a Peloton, I won't have money for food. Weight-loss win-win!!!
why is this such a big deal?
Thank god, I'm not the only one that was thinking that.
Because people who don't want to improve their own lives like to get angry at anybody who has "too much". Too much is code for "more than I have". If this company makes someone even remotely irritated, that person needs to do some serious soul searching.
It's also funny because people who can afford the houses pictured don't want to ruin the interior design by putting their expensive bike in a random place in the house.
Because those of us who aren't smug, rich, pretentious dicks don't like to see such grandiose attitudes when so much is wrong in this world.
Considering the bike cost upwards of 2-3k I'd say they are targeting the the right audience.
Aimed at those who would spend £5000 on a real bike - but too lazy to use it.
Using a real bike is not possible sometimes, for many reasons. 1. Can't actually ride a bike 2. It's snowing outside/pouring/blowing a gale 3. You can't leave the kid's unattended to go do it. 4. It's dark outside and you don't feel safe . It looks like a great product to me, for those that can afford it.
So a company makes a product with a certain clientele in mind, markets to said clientele, and bitter people who'd rather cut others down instead of building themselves up bitch and moan? Yup, sounds like the internet to me.
diane a, do they not advertise expensive cars on TV where you come from? What's the difference?
Exactly, this is how marketing works people >.<
But - why are they advertising it on national TV - to many, many millions of non-customers. only 5% of viewers would realistically be able to afford that for an excercise bike. Costs as much as a small used car.
Those grapes are sour. I'd seriously consider getting one - but only after comparing it to a bunch of others. The price might be high for YOU, but YOU are not everyone.
Who said anything sour? I'm saying that they are targeting a very specific audience of which the people who are criticizing the high-end vibe of the commercials probably do not belong. For your average person spending 2-3k on exercise equipment is a huge, luxury expense, good for you if its not. It sounds like you have a serious inferiority complex.
Considering how expensive they are, you would have to be rich enough to live in these spaces to afford one in the first place. So really, he is pissed they are being honest...
If it was £200 I would be seriously tempted
It amazes me how many people are misunderstanding. Before I saw the jokes I thought the same (that the bike is expensive so of course the homes are expensive) but what people are making fun of is the placement - if you had such a beautiful living room you wouldn't put your exercise bike in the middle of it. I don't know why you would ever put it in your kitchen lol
I personally don't see what's wrong with the ad. While watching it I had no thoughts of the surroundings. It looked like everyday homes they were in and nothing extremely fancy. I'm a working middle class citizen also. Seems people are blowing everything out of proportion now days. I'm not easily offended though also. I'm not going to give anyone that much control over me or how I feel. I choose how I feel!
You know they're joking right?
They dont tell you the price on the ads though - makes you want it THEN you find out the cost.
I totally agree. Those houses are all nice and some of those condos look really expensive but most of the shots just look like regular houses that were recently designed. I think people just want to see this thing shoved in a corner with baby crap and papers surrounding it. As if any company would advertise that way.
With hangers and clothes draped on it, you know, how it will actually end up 75% of the time
Can you actually watch TV on that screen? Would hate to miss Keeping Up With The Kardashians. - sure they must all have several each. Lol
Diana, I don’t have one and I really don’t know if you can watch regular TV on it. Maybe through an app!
*takes back your ticket because you missed the boat*
funny. Don't think they could sold those bikes if they put in in a crackhouse. not the same effect :-)
What about a basement rec room or spare bedroom, or any of the normal places people tend to set up exercise equipment?
Someone was so annoyed by the commercial they decided to spend 18 twitter posts on this one bike. Yikes. Of course you can spend your time however you like but maybe you could use some 'Hakuna matata'. =)
This Clue Heywood person did the first one, the rest were 18 separate responses by different people.
Hakuna Matata! Now that songs stuck in my head thanks lol.
Well, you are discounting the possibility that those twitter posts are a part of the campaign.
Yes, I think exactly the same.
Exactly my thoughts. Why be bitter about all the small details in the world. It's just an ad =)
none of these are even a bit funny.
Company selling that bike could also pay for such marketing, since negative marketing brings sometimes more attention. It got to Boredpanda after all :)
So they should advertise in a tiny corner of a cluttered room? I don’t get it. This bike costs the same all the others.
What? No, no it does not "cost the same as all the others". You can get a decent stationary bike for $400-$700. The Pelatons START at $1900.00. I am not sure where you live, but here in the States, that brand is FAR and above the prices for others....Nordic Track is comparable, but most others are much, much cheaper.
You can get a low level bike from Walmart for like $300 but that’s not the point. Every single bike in that category is at least $1800. You forgot to consider the quality of that bike and all of the tech features it has. Were you trying to compare a bike that doesn’t even go online to this thing? I live in the capital of the USA, and here pretty much every bike that compares to Pelaton is like $2k, like the Nordic Track you mentioned.
On a tropical small island having Peloton at home is a must. Cause anywhere you go on your bicycle you are not exhausted enough for the distances are too short. So when I arrive back home I drop my Trek Madone and jump on the Peloton to recoup the mileage
Meh. I've seen worse ads. I don't get what's so funny. Of course they will shoot the ad in a nice, clean house with lots of light and not in some basement with water dripping from the walls and chains hanging from the ceiling.
Interesting basement....? Need the bike to keep the submissives in shape?
I have a 30 year old road bike set up on a 17 year old turbo trainer in the spare bedroom. I am doomed to be lower class forever.
As long as Peloton can hold my coat and the shirt I took off last night, it's ok with me.
Well they got all the exposure they need.
Hm... I didn't notice that these were all done by the same account, so yeah, I agree with the "sour grapes" sentiment. However, I also agree with the underlying thought that the ads are bit pretentious, but personal context might be important here; every time I see these ads, it's always on the cheap, ad supported version of Hulu. I'm assuming that whoever can afford a house like this, plus the Peloton machine and it's workout subscription, isn't desperately trying to save $4 a month on their Hulu subscription. So, maybe it more of an ad placement/targeting failure for me, cause I sure as hell can't afford any of that.
I always see it on CNBC, which is like a business focused channel, supposedly. I always felt they were aiming for a higher end clientele based on that. Doesn’t Hulu tailor ads to the subscriber? Maybe you’ve shopped for exercise equipment online?
HELP - Does the Pelaton stationary bike (starting price $1900.00) have any advantages over the Nordic Trac (starting price around $700.00) - From the commercial it seems to be WiFi accessible but are there any others? PLEASE HELP ANSWER.
Nordic Trac starts at $700 but the version of Nordic that’s comparable bike to Peloton starts at $1800. I think Peloton also comes with those trainer sessions you see on the commercials.
The Pelaton stationary bike comes with their patented Clue Heywood "you earn more money then me" abuse system as standard, you can get the cheaper Nordic Trac, but really why would you?
I love how they keep the expensive coat rack in a readily accessible location. I keep my Peliton in the laundry room to hold a stack of linens on th seat and hangers on the handlebars
"Now, more than ever, people are getting tired of being forced fed fake imagery of a life that is impossible to achieve". Oh noez! I'm, being FORCED! The horror, the horror. (BTW, how is a sub $3000 bike in a nice apartment "impossible"? Go to school, get a high paying job like surgeon or finance and buy said things. Please explain how it's impossible).
Don't you know you're suppose to hate anyone who is making more money than you and assume they did so oppressing poor people? Hellooooooo this is the new perpetual victimhood social mentality :p
I don’t agree with you about the victimhood mentality but I think it’s insane to assume that only billionaires are buying this product. It’s two grand. The whole rich setting never even bothered me. It's just the fact you got people willing to spend money just to use a bike in their own home with someone who isnt there.
this thing turns polyamory and time honored pursuit to exhaustion available without trying to explain it to your spouse. I'm not motivated to literally cycle, but my mind (what remains) wanders...
I've always thought that this is one invention that humans don't need. Buy yourself a bike for 250$ and go ride it outside... You will do more workout than this thing, you'll see the sunlight, you may meet new people or even find love.. sheesh......
Did anyone notice the theme throughout all the photos? Everyone was very well off and could afford to put the bike any place they wanted

I used to sell exercise equipment and bikes years ago. The biggest problem with bicycle exercisers is that it's boring. We used to encourage people to put the bike in front of the TV, a window with a view of the street, or somewhere that isn't isolated. Otherwise, it becomes a clothes rack. When you think about it from this standpoint, many of the pictures above make good sense.
O beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meet it feeds on
Got to love modern adverts. Great replacement for 'glamour modelling'....
