Japan Railways Build Turtle Tunnels

Japanese railroad companies recently installed a wonderful way to keep turtles safe when they try to cross their train tracks – a turtle tunnel that passes under the tracks.

When crossing tracks, turtles can get crushed by trains or get stuck in track switches, causing delays. These tunnels solve problems for humans and turtles alike! They were developed in a partnership between Suma Aqualife Park in Kobe and the West Japan Railway Company.

In the Czech Republic we have something similar for frogs. It is in Brno under the road in Žebětín village.

Cool. Turtles can crawl out of a tunnel like that no problem. Though the one on its back should have been turned over right away because that's how they can die from collapsing their lungs

There is a person standing right there (you can see his boot). If the turtle behind the capsized one doesn't flip his friend, I'm sure the guy will. And yes, these were more than likely built for water drainage, but turtles are clever creatures, and likely started using them on their own. Now the engineers are modifying the design to accommodate the turtles.

Japanophiles tend to CREATE stories. That is not the way it was explained on NHK. In past two years there have been 13 cases where turtles go on tracks whereby sensors malfunctioned leading to train delays. They have made these routes where the turtles will fall in and the sensors will go uninterrupted. The announcer asked how to guarantee that the turtles fall correctly and not upside down to which the JR person did not have a very straight answer. The blog is unnecessarily eulogizing something beyond the intention, in my personal interpretation.

The second picture isn't a tunnel, it's a railroad switch point, if a train pass by and needs to change it's way, the rail would move of position, in that case, the turtle ends crushed >_< gulp! :'(

I'm a bit confused on how the turtles will know to go exactly into those narrow tunnels... Do people have to nudge them in or something?

You don't actually believe any of this do you? They would care about turtles, all while slaughtering whales by the thousands?

most people love their dogs/cats but dont bother to slaughter and torture cows, pigs and chickens just for the sake of eating some meat we are used to.
