This Amazing Bridge Turns Into An Underwater Tunnel Connecting Denmark And Sweden
This unique roadway connects the Danish capital of Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmö. The Øresund, designed by the Danish architect George K.S. Rotne, was opened on July 1, 2000. The bridge stretches about 8km before transitioning through an artificial island into a 4km tunnel under the Flint Channel.
The site is interesting both biologically and architecturally: the Lund’s Botanical Association has identified more than 500 different species of plants on the island, which was constructed from material dredged from the seabed. Most of the concrete tunnel was cast on land and towed out to the location.

Share on FacebookUpon first glance and having been on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Tunnel (which is 37km long compared to the Øresund Bridge's 12km), it's easy to think of the Øresund Bridge as no big deal, but the bridge is a double-decker with trains running the lower level and is high enough in places for boats to pass underneath. They're both pretty impressive in their own right. Also, I'm completely uncomfortable on either one.
Yes, the bridge is impressive and it too provide a convenient time-saver way for people who work in and commute to the other country on daily basis.
I live in Sweden and have driven across the bridge a few times, have never taken the train though. It's quite astonishing!
Why the long over-water drive before going underground? Why there? Anyone explain?
The seabed is not good and it is no good place for a drilled tunnel hence the bridge. But the pillars on the bridge would disturb air...
Load More Replies...Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia, USA, has a couple of bridge-tunnels similar to this one: the Chespeake Bay (as mentioned by another commenter) and and the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. It's a great concept if you don't want the expense of a full tunnel but you need a shipping channel.
Fortunately, I'm one of those people who don't have nerves of steel ..... and not a single adventurous bone in my body ..... 😅
Wait till the Swedes get some Nazi leader to abolish immigration a build a wall right through the middle of the long span; and then try and make Denmark pay for it!
Big deal - the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel was built in the late 50's. It goes under the Hampton Roads Ship Channel between two artificial islands, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel dives under the ocean that way TWICE!
The Big Deal is the Øresund has got a clean minimalistic style of graceful curvature and interesting geometrics; whereas the Chesapeake Bay IresOre Bridge looks like an old hose dropped in the water!

Definitely is amazing; probably wasn't the political football like the new proposed bridge from Michigan to Canada, which is not as much of an engineering feat as this, but is needed. Just another political debacle in this country.
Is there a view of the ocean inside the tunnel or is it just a tunnel. I think it would be cool to see the fish and stuff, but then it might be distracting of driving.
Impressive. I too have been on the Chesapeake bay and a ship was passing over the tunnel as I was approaching it. Strange to see a large freighter in front of you.
This is an awesome engineering feat and would be fun to drive thru
Curious to know what grounds the bridge to the tunnel? Sort of mind boggling. Also, what does the 90 imply? is that the speed limit?
Where are the crazy environmentalists that are warning the sea levels are rising and the tunnel will be flooded.??? I don't know if I would use it but I did use the Euro tunnel.
