Depending on your point of view, the United States and the United Kingdom can be seen as great bastions of liberal democracy, progress, and freedom; or imperial powers struggling to hold on to the power and wealth accumulated largely through colonialism and war.

Either way, the rest of the world looks on in curiosity as the governments of these once great nations decide to disengage from hard-won international treaties and agreements, put their fingers in their ears to economic realities and begin to build walls around themselves, now that they aren't allowed to just take from everyone else anymore.

But while Donald Trump stokes nonsensical fear of terrorist hordes, flooding over the border to justify his precious wall for 'national security,' people are finding themselves in real and present danger due to the government shutdown he has called to get his way. Hundreds of thousands of government workers are being stood down or are working without pay, including those critical to the safety of air passengers, such as airport security workers and air traffic controllers.

The irony of it all would be hilarious if it weren't so serious. Scroll down below to see the actual, tangible ways that the shutdown is affecting the safety of Americans and let us know what you think in the comments. (Facebook cover image: iStock / MediaProduction)

Trump is so contradictory, he says he wants to keep terrorism out of the US by building a wall yet he throws a tantrum and shuts down the government which means TSA workers could easily let a terrorist slip by because they can't monitor everyone when they're not getting paid

This should be illegal, no government should be allowed to hold its citizens hostage like this. Especially in jobserved which are a matter of national security.

Their collegues call in sick so that they can do other jobs to earn the money they need to pay their bills. But the Tangerine Turd doesn't care. Liked a spoiled little bratt he's clinging on to his idea of having a useless wall.

Maybe this should be the time to question all the security theather at airports. Most of the things currently being done harass innocent people while adding zero to actually stopping bad guys who know what they are doing.

That's kind of stupid because how do you really know who is innocent by just looking at them?

Well, at least she showed up. And for what it's worth, scanning a laptop by itself probably doesn't add any real value anyway.

You would be surprised the damage a explosive the size of a laptop would yield. More than enough to take a pressurized tube in the sky down.

She needs to be fired. I am also working and not getting paid. But I have a responsibility to continue to do my job for public safety. We all know this is a possibility when we apply for government work. Just like failing to get a COLA raise this year. We WILL get paid though. This weekend is the first missed paycheck. We are always at the mercy of the Congress and President. If we don't like it, we can join the private sector --signed 37 year public servant.

Thank you for your sacrifice. We all think that a govt job will be a cushy one with fantastic bennies, not so. I do not believe that that TSA actually used those words. I was let go from a job after 9 years of loyal service and was telling my tale of woe to a friend and the man next to her interjected that he was laid off by PanAm after over 26 years and their pension fund was taken over by the courts and more inside info, it put perspective on my problems. My personal opinion on the shut down is due to the Dems overwhelming hatred of Trump and that they don't care about the citizens of this country. They seem to care more about their agenda, sanctuary cities, and non-citizens. Your last two sentences were spot on. Best of luck in the coming weeks.

Osama would be sitting up in his saline grave (if actually been dumped lifeless!) and cocking his hand! .

Sadly, this would be the perfect time for criminals and/or terrorists to smuggle things through security

I know they’re no getting paid but even if I was in that persons situation I’d care about national security. Maybe these TSA security guard needs to get a different job.

Sorry but I still would do my job when lives are at stake. Imagine if you ended up bringing a bomb on board and killed 300 people, how would she feel then?Call in sick is better than not doing the job.

@Meowton Mewsk they allegedly have the role to protect anyone that can be reached via the sky, or have you already forgotten 9/11? if they are good at it or not is a different story. This person clearly is not! I like how people down voted my previous comment. I hold because I hold this person that has been charged with federal security role to a high standard. Says a lot about the character of the down voter.

If you were made to work for free, would you really put in the effort you normally do? I sure as hell wouldn't. You get what you pay for.

If your sense of responsibility for public security of the lives you have been charged of protecting falter because you are not getting paid, then your a garbage person and should be invited to work elsewhere. I am personally glad you in particular are not getting paid. POS!

People need money to survive. There's nothing wrong with doing the job just for the money. This worker should not have been put in a position where they have to work without getting paid in the first place and it's an incredibly heavy load of expectations for us to expect them to do their best without getting anything in return. The man responsible for this (the walking orange) should care about and arrange the public security. He has the power to do that, he decided he doesn't care. He is the problem. Not the poor tired and soon to be hungry workers.

This is so disgusting and embarrassing. I cant wait until our countrymen can have some dignity again in the world....everyone either hates us now, pities us, or is laughing at us. I feel so "Great" right now :-/ 2020!!!!!! It can not come fast enough, I have talked to so many people that hardly ever vote, but they said they will certainly be in line at the polls in '20 to get this incompetent embarrassment OUT OF HERE...

It's not, but people can't afford to even get to their place of work. Your president should not be allowed to hold his citizens hostage.

Guys, Oliver Queen has got you! On a more serious note, though, it's great of him to understand the problems TSA workers are having right now instead of getting mad about the wait like mos people would.

I wouldn't put any effort either if I wasn't getting paid. You get what you pay for, though in this case you get what you didn't pay for when these people even showed up to work in the first place
