And still, even the great skeptic, denying the possibility of any knowledge, in the end, as we remember, took poison, defending his own convictions. Of course, one should not be so radical, but still, each of us has our own truths.
And so, a few days ago, a thread appeared in the AskReddit community, the author of which asked a question about just this: "What do you swear on your life to be 100% true?" Today, the thread has over 42.6K upvotes and almost 28.5K different comments, and what is an indisputable truth for some may well be perceived by others as a very controversial issue. In the end, so many people - so many opinions.

Humans are capable of lying, twisting facts to show themselves, places and people they like in a good light. Modern world has PR agencies for rich and connected.
Combine the two and history as we know it is a twisted version of what really happened.
"History is written by the victors" is an extremely true statement. There are aspects of our past that have been completely and totally stamped out, twisted, and altered. Especially if that civilization didn't survive, didn't have a writing system, their writing system isn't understood or none of it remains. Think about all the groups the Ancient Romans wiped out, for instance. All we know about many of them is what's been written about them by the Romans... who would outright lie to paint themselves in the best possible light to look just. Everyone else were just "barbarians", after all. Even in more recent times before the internet (and indispensable resources like the WayBackMachine), it was pretty easy to change history. Burn/ban the books/photographs/scrolls/etc, kill those who know the truth, and obliterate any physical evidence. Done.

People don't *genuinely* care about deaths of strangers they don't personally know or haven't met. If people had the option to choose to sacrifice 10 lives of people they have never met to save 1 they love, they would do it without hesitation - they probably wouldn't admit it out loud, but they *would* agree to it.
Heck, most people would sacrifice 10 people they don't know just to get a better price on a mobile phone.
Really? Being willing to sacrifice other people for someone you know doesn't mean you don't care. I care,but not as much as I'd care about someone I know. Probably. Depends who it is.
Is this like the theory there's no such thing as altruism because the psychologist who came up with the theory was not capable himself? There's no way I would randomly agree without hesitation to harm coming to strangers. My morals don't disappear just because nobody is looking.
You misunderstood the OP, it's not about randomly agreeing to harm strangers, it's about choosing your loved ones over a stranger: "choose to sacrifice 10 lives of people they have never met to save 1 they love"

With the recent death of the queen I 100% agree with this - I feel sympathy for anyone who's lost a loved on, but to claim to have grief for someone that you've never met is bizarre to me. Bottom line is you don't know that person, they didn't impact your daily life in any way and the, being gone won't either.
First line is too broad. Quite a lot of people cared about HM the Queen.
Heck I would not hesitate to "...sacrifice 10 lives of people [I] have never met to save" the live of either of my cats.
I would sacrifice 90% of the world’s population over my own or people I loves lives. There are to many people on this planet any way.
Not sure about that. If my loved one was very old I certainly wouldn't sacrifice even one stranger to save them. Also pretty much everyone I love would not expect me to do this. If they did I wouldn't love them. And I wouldn't expect anyone to do it for me.
And the reason people can't say this out loud? "What, only ten people? is that all I am worth to you, just ten people! I would except you to sacrifice at least a hundred people AND their pets if you really cared anything for me..." There, I bet we all know someone who would say this.
A generalization. There are exceptions (though I agree that I think it's generally true).

Of course they don't. What no one wants to admit, is that everything that nearly everyone does is selfish. They pretend to care about the deaths of strangers because it makes them look like "good" people, they support things that actively hurt others on the assumption that it MIGHT benefit them in the future, but it's alright because everyone wearing the same hat is doing the same thing. They listen to others so they can talk, they help you move so you'll owe them a favor, they give to charity so they can brag about it and/or because it's their ticket into the made up, they ignore others faults and failure for fear of having their own called out. Every time you do something "good" or "generous" it has some benefit to you, even if it's only a fleeting feeling. For you to be truly selfless, you need to do something "good" for someone you actively hate, that also hates you in a manner that measurably negatively impacts your life and then never tell anyone about it.
One philosophy is that human acts of kindness are for self-preservation. We do nice things for others because we want people to do the same for us. So, emotions that motivate us, like empathy or sympathy, to do nice things for others are selfish emotions.
