Cold truths are hard to swallow for a reason. They strip us of the illusion that everything’s in our control and that we know things best. But in reality, that’s not how things work, and who likes to be told that?!
“What’s a truth no one wants to hear?” wondered Redditor u/grubbseuph11 on r/AskReddit and people shared some illuminating and brutally honest responses, like the hard-to-digest fact that “friends will come and go,” and that “no matter how likeable you may be, there are always going to be certain people who don't like you, sometimes for no particular reason.”
So let’s get ready to be hit by a cold shower that should make you rethink this whole perspective on our lives, and be sure to check out our previous post with more hard truths right here.

You aren’t a hero or even a good person just because you’re in the military
American brain washing... "thank you for your service"... I mean, yes, thank you! But war needs to be feared not celebrated!
Especially when you are in military who goes to a war in foreign country which doesn't attack your country in the same way. "Possible threat to world peace" is not the reason to send your armed military troops to some country or drop bombs on said country.
Load More Replies...I think this is the swing back from the Vietnam era, where the public blamed the soldiers and not the politicians who sent them over there. The soldiers were treated horrendously. Since then, I think there's been a realization that maybe we need to treat our troops a bit better. And the pendulum just kept swinging...
And I want it to swing to treating them better and preventing suicides
Load More Replies...Had a guy harassing me on the street and when I told him to go f himself he started screaming like a nut case about how he was a vet from Iraq and fought for my rights. Dude, my family has fought in every single American War and that does not give them the right to verbally assault other. Dude was a complete asshole.
If he really fought for your rights then he should know you have the right to deny him.
Load More Replies...I really don't understand this "thank you for your service" cult. I understand that their lives are on the line every day, but it is a paid job and it has its fair share of bastards on all sides.
I would understand if they were fighting in their own country to defend it from an attack. But why should anybody thank people that get paid to kill humans in other countries?
Load More Replies...There's a lot of fetishizing there, not actual respect. For instance, a guy interrupted me to thank me for my service after I mentioned I was in the Air Force, then cussed me when I said that inequality I saw there really brought me to my anti-racist, democratic-socialist views.
Making US military service members into "Heroes" was a massive marketing undertaking by the US military (and their consultants) as a result of the lessons learned from the Vietnam war. The military realized that a lot of people saw their own military as villains - baby killers who dropped napalm on children, raped and burned villages, etc. This marketing campaign has been vey successful. The US military has had examples horrific misdeeds in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. but these were quickly suppressed by the public since their "Heroes" can do no wrong.
maybe it is just an American thing we definitely don't have that in the UK I saw someone write once that they are not a hero its just a job they do
Yeah, it's an American thing. It's all part of the weird patriotism that also makes (a certain group of them) obsessed with flags, guns, meat, God and boring sports nobody else plays. Thankfully they're not all like that.
Load More Replies...I have met some of the most noble, badass, sweethearted people in the military and I have met some who should never be allowed within fifty feet of a weapon. Soldiers are people just like everybody else.
Same thing goes for people who go to church/temple/mosque/misc place of worship. On TV news you sometimes see stories where someone does something terrible and they interview a neighbor who says something like, "but he was a good boy, he always went to church". Being religious does not make you a good person.
Agreed! There are heroes in all fields and jerks in all fields. True, I think it takes a certain type of person to enter into a certain job (please no one jump on me about not appreciating people) but, that doesn't necessarily make you a saint. I've known nurses who are spiteful and I've known people in looked-down-upon jobs who are just the best people you will ever meet.
i wish more people would know that, one definitely not hero for attending war one's country initiated
While this may be true, attacking them does not make you a decent person, or smart, or anything but a waste of oxygen.
I respect all branches of the military and every single one of you who are American should do the same. These men and women fight for YOU our country and our freedom. They should be honored weather they're jerks or not. There's something wrong with this country! Unbelievably ass backwards events happening continually! Veterans need to be taken care of. They gave everything for our freedom they deserve everything back. And all of you saying Anything different should be ashamed of yourselves!
Load More Replies...And when you're a veteran, you're a civilian. Just like the rest of the people and that's why you aren't entitled to the privileges you think you're entitled to.
Well when you start applying this to politicians, and every other sector of society then maybe I'll take your comment seriously
Load More Replies...IT'S a SACRIFICE of your time for something besides your self. It is NOT brainwashing. War is Not caused by the military, IT'S YOUR POLITICIANS!
Exactly the point, politicians send their militaries into war, so if you're a solder you're not defending your country, you are fighting for a politician. No one in Iraq was thinking of invading the west, our solders went over there because Bush thought it was a good idea.
Load More Replies...Every vet being called a hero is as bad as every white person being called a racist both get tossed around way too much
I feel this. I have nothing against those who choose to serve but their decision to do so doesn't automatically deserve my respect. The "military worship" in my country is off the charts crazy. People walk up to complete strangers and thank them for their service. Always seems so strange to me.
As a Canadian I find this view refreshing. Yes their service is appreciated as is those of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and many others.
This is a very USA thing; here in Europe, being in the military is just a job
Here in India we keep the army and politicians on a pedestal. They are equal to God's and worshipped. They are above any blame even if the country is in crisis. And God save anybody who says a word against them.
Every military person being a hero is as bad as every white person being a racist both get tossed around way too much
I'm a Army veteran and this is 100% true! It's a voluntary enlistment.
Hero has been tossed around so much and for so little it has really lost its meaning. Nowadays if a cop doesn't shoot you then he's a hero.. My ass!
Well it depends. When you protect your country AT HOME against intrusion, you are a hero in my eyes. When you go to fight to another country, which you btw totally destroy, you are an aggressor.
Do you not understand fully WHY American soldiers fight off U.S. soil??
Load More Replies...Gotta agree with that. I was raised in the military and did 4 years active service in the Marines with a year in Vietnam. Some of the worst people ever are in the military ...and some of the very best. Many are fine at doing their jobs in the military but are people you would not want to deal with in civilian life.
Yeah, some of the worst people I ever knew were in the military. I grew up as a Navy brat and spent 4 years active duty with the Marines which included a year in Vietnam.
After 9/11, there seemed to be a misplaced glorification of first responders along this same line. At one point, when the mayor of New York ordered the fire fighters working to clear the rubble of the towers, they went all batshit crazy saying how that was insulting their work, and how there were dead heroes in the carnage. That was allowed to get out of hand. They were not the qualified people to be removing debris and rubble in the search of victims. Their job was back in the fire house.
yes....this one is so true. I know a few people who say "you need to respect them." No. I don't. I respect those deserving of respect, not because they're military. I know a few military people that are absolute trash human beings. The other issue of "having to respect them" is when people say "they fought so you can be free." That's not really true. Short of the Revolution, Civil War and War of 1812, we commit troops for empire and corporate interests. A tough pill to swallow for many in the US.
The dilution of the word 'hero' by applying it to entire categories of employment, like the military. and not based on specific actions is an equivalent to the painfully-lame 'everyone gets a participation trophy' trend in schools
Agreed, legal murderers. Lets not forget when six of our marines raped a 14 year old Iraqi girl till her hips broke and burned her home down with her and her family locked in.
Nobody is brain washed for thanking someone for their service. The adults that speak up and say these things are likely children of Vietnam vets who grew up with stories about how they were spit upon and called names. So they simply wanted to change the culture. Everybody calm the f&#k down.
war need to be refused ! those who do that are the real heros , if you ask me
Your missing the point. Physical scars can hurt for ever, I know what I'm talking about. Some operation don't make things better. As for mental scars they are not physical, do you get it? Our brain never forgets unless you have dementia or Amnesia. An odor, a sound, a picture, a conversation, touching something, anything can bring back awful souvenirs.
The Afghanistan women don't say you were great USA leaving us in the hands of illiterate blood thirsty bastards who will not let intelligent women and girls live their lives as they wish. Thanks Uncle Sam for having left Vietnam and now Afghanistan on a limb, I won't say bravo to these colonist bastards of not so great america. Making wars all over this planet and leaving a living hell behind. Why doesn't this government invest in education, better housing for all, Medicare for all, not only the wealthy and stop selling weapons like they're candy? I remembered at schools that I intended in California, ever morning we saluted the USA flag and finished with God bless America. This government through out its history it never was God fearing, because what this government did to the lawful first nation people stealing their land, never honoring the treated, having wiped out the population of American Indians, still treating Afro-Americans like dirt, keeping them always down the social ladde
After so many hailed Caitlyn Jenner a hero, I knew then and there, the term no longer has meaning. Can't think of one rich, insulated person as a hero.
I cringe every time someone thanks me for my service. If I hadn't joined I would have been drafted. Then I reenlisted so I would have a paycheck and "3 hots and a cot".
Yeah, a friend rents a house near a base, often to the military. They trash the place, cut holes in the floor, steal the applcances.
The person who said this is a complete as$hole! These men and women put down their lives so you can be free and act like an entitled jerk.
There are bad people in service but they all stand ready to fight for my freedom so I thank them all for that
Thank you for being brave enough to say this out loud because it's so true.
You go to Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. We did because we HAD to. These people are suffering from seeing and doing things they had to, to survive. They lived in Terror. Volunteer for that. Whoever you are. I did 25 years Active Duty in the U.S. Air Force. I didn't go to those places. But those that did, I have the Utmost respect for!!!!
Screw anyone that has zero appreciation for a vet. They defend till the ( possible death) your freakin ungrateful lazy entitled asses. You guy suck soooo bad if you can't even appreciate a vet. Cowards. Bet that's that why you hate them. Because it convicts your souls that a bigger better person is fighting for your sorry loser ass
Agreed... my brother is in the military and this is true for him on both counts.
Well, without those icky soldiers, you wouldn’t be allowed to write or say that or anything out loud. It’s too bad the military and these soldiers didn’t hear this and the comments here before they went over and got ptsd and had their lives ruined because they believed in something. Just so a bunch of pissants can tell them it wasn’t appreciated and they could give a s**t. What a time to be alive.
The important difference between *being thankful for each soldiers service* and *fetishizing the military*
I'm grateful always for their service. But as a server in a restaurant I get aggravated!! I pay taxes that pay for their services. So how is it okay for them to ask me for their discount & to not tip me one cent?!? And it's about 90% of veterans that do this to me! I have to pay a tip out at the end of my shift. So if your bill was $100 & you leave me nothing, I pay $2 plus waiting on your every need. I know their job is extreme!! But you chose it. Treat everyone appropriately!!! It's something I thought people who served in the military did or was supposed to do. I know my WWII veteran grandfather who raised me did. Just be nice humans. Everyone. Please
Anyone who can't understand - that a person in the military does not equal war - doesn't have the reading comprehension to discuss this.
YOU CAN GO f YOURSELF. I COME FROM A MILITARY FAMILY. YOUR WORDS ARE THOSE OF A COWARD AND A LOSER. YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT WITH NO WORRIES BECAUSE OF THE ARMED SERVICES PROTECTING YOUR LOUSY BUTT!
Agreed Also you aren’t a hero because you are a teacher. I was a teacher for years so I’m not hating.
Thank you! If you weren't drafted, you chose to go. I just assume you wanted booty bc of the uniform.
I worked for the federal govt. Had a lot of employees and volunteers who were veterans. In my experience, the men and women who go about their business, not bragging or boastful, no expectation of entitlement are usually those who have seen combat and just want to return to a respectful civilian life. The ones who you see coming from a mile away wearing military T-shirts, blaring flags and spouting about what all they deserve tend to have sat stateside or worked in the cafeteria (not that there's anything wrong with that). Had one older gentleman who volunteered for 13 years. It was not until he died that we learned he had been a medic in the battlefields of WWII.
having spent 24 yrs in the military I'll attest that this is 100% true.
And just because you were in the military, it doesn't mean you were a "Green Ranger Seal Raider". Lots more people work in the supply chain and fire their weapons once a year if they are lucky. Those potatoes aren't going to peel themselves.
Also, when a soldier is killed in battle, it is said "He gave his life for (insert cause here). " No, not unless he threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers, or something like that. In the vast majority of cases when a soldier is killed in battle, he didn't *give* his life, it was forcibly *taken* from him. (This applies to police officers as well.)
The USA military-industrial complex as a whole is largest polluter on the planet. That alone disqualifies it from being good.
This is hilarious since the military is probably the only reason people can say things like this lol...
The military doesn’t protect us from our own government, ugly.

Fu-ck off, fascist! Everybody spot the racist as-shole, it’s Wayne Basso. I doubt you have any friends.

Everyone who serves in the USA? Why would a god just bless and keep the USA? Or bless and keep everybody who serves in all countries? That doesn’t make sense either because many countries directly oppose each other. Do you have any scientific evidence that any gods even exist?
Load More Replies...Except that US military men and women haven't had to fight for your freedom and protection since WW2. In the last 30 years they fought for the protections and benefits of oil companies, construction companies (especially Haliburton) , and the US Defense contractors (General Dynamics, Lockhead Martin, etc.)

In order to find out why exactly it's so hard to swallow a hard truth, and how we should react to it, Bored Panda spoke with Susan Petang, a certified divorce coach and the creator of “The Quiet Zone Coaching,” who teaches women how to stop feeling overwhelmed and start waking up happy in the morning again.
“When we develop close relationships, we expect those people to be gentle with us, not hurt us,” said Susan explaining why hard truths are not pleasant to hear. “When they offer up a hard truth, it violates the expectation that the person isn't going to cause us pain. We want them to love and encourage us—but we don't always realize that a hard truth is being given to us with love and encouragement, with our best interests in mind.”
“I don't know” is a perfectly valid answer to many questions.
I have a professional qualification where you have to have said "sorry, I can't answer that question" to qualify. My boss primed the customer to ask something silly.
“Often, what someone else calls a ‘hard truth’ we call ‘criticism,’” she said. “If a criticism is true, we can agree and apologize, then work to make it right—or we can ignore and deflect it if it isn't true.”
Moreover, Susan said that when someone we care about delivers a hard truth, we should take that opinion more seriously, because this is a person whose opinion we trust. “I advise my clients to think about the intention behind the message. If the intention is to help us, prevent us from making a mistake, or intervene before we get hurt, it's worthwhile to consider.”
It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.
Mistakes are unavoidable. Failure is unavoidable. We cannot run from it and need to stop being so afraid, because it's ok to not get everything right all the time, and like this says, sometimes it's out if your control
Some people are bad parents.
Being funny or smart doesn’t mean you’re ready to take care if a human being (maybe even multiple) for a good chunk of your life.
Please don’t get kids to fix a relationship either, I’ve seen this too much and it doesn’t work.
Most people genuinely do not care about you or your opinions, which is just fine
Susan advises asking yourself if the "hard truth" is really true. “Be brutally honest with yourself—remember why your loved one brought it up to you in the first place!”
“It's beneficial to hear a hard truth when we're hurting someone else, hurting ourselves, or not being true to our values,” she explained and added: “So situations that look like that would be drug/alcohol abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, bad financial or career decisions, or dating someone married if you're religious.”
No matter how likeable you may be, there are always going to be certain people who don't like you, sometimes for no particular reason.
Most people shouldn’t have kids.
When you look at the impact of 7 billion humans at a time on the surface of the planet, yeah. This is probably true.
Life will never be exactly like it was before the pandemic started.
After the 1918 influenza epidemic came the roaring 20's which was revolutionary for both the arts and society, a similar thing happened with the renaissance, so who knows, maybe it will never be the same again for the better ( for those who have lost jobs/loved ones to Covid i am not minimising ur suffering)

Friends will come and go. You will have many friends who one day you will never see again.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Niceness, kindness, small random acts, these are one of the things I love about life. Even if they are few and far between. And doing them always feels good so it's a win win ^-^
Climate change is an exponential curve and we are entering the shoulder. Natural disasters are expected to increase 8x in the next couple decades. It gets worse after that.

The world is 100% being run by corruption.
I read this as "corporation," doubted it, then realized that was probably true too.
War can come to your doorstep, everything can change. No country is immune. History clearly demonstrates this.
Not everything happens "for a reason" or because of something you have (or have not) done.
Sometimes, things in life and the Universe go sideways and it's just your time to be caught in the crossfire.

If you don’t take care of your teeth when you’re young, you’ll regret it when you’re old. Brush twice a day, goddamnit.
If you’re chasing a romance or friendship… the other person doesn’t want to be with you.
You’re not special… but that’s okay because everyone is not special together.
I wish we‘d teach that more. So many peope think they’re special and thus believe they’re entitled to something. You and your wishes/opinions/needs definitely matter, but so do those of everyone else.
The odds that you die tomorrow is wayyy higher than winning on that lottery ticket.
There's no "health in every size". If you're over/under certain weight limit, you have a higher risk in getting sick. There's no "but-".
I wish more people understood the concept of "risk". You can totally be 20lb over weight and still be healthy RIGHT NOW. All it means is that you are gambling that you will be healthy tomorrow or next week or next year. It is also not a guarantee. If there is a risk factor that one in ten overweight men will have a heart attack, and you gather nine of your overweight friends you cannot say with complete accuracy which one of you it will be. It is a gamble - some people are happy to gamble, and accept the fact they may lose. But there's a difference between knowing it's a possibility and being scared into thinking it's a certainty.
You can't make someone love you if they don't
This is a terrible movie trope. Keep pestering and chasing and eventually the other person will fall madly in love with you. Sorry, but it doesn't work like that. You will go to prison for stalking and may find yourself on the receiving end of somebody else's love. You don't want that. You really don't want that.
That you need to stop procrastinating and get that thing you've been needing to do done already.
Your boyfriend/husband is always going to find other women attractive.
Ur partner will always find other people attractive ( weather they're bf/gf doesn't matter )
We’ll eventually be alone, so it’s either being comfortable with ourselves or being tormented by loneliness later in life
Staying with someone who cheated on you is never a good idea
Who hurt you, OP, that made you believe this was 100% true for 100% of people 100% of the time? People are complicated. Relationships are complicated. Absolutes about either rarely apply.
There are some people who just are NOT going to like you. And you will have done nothing to deserve, cause or warrant it. Its not your fault.
There will also be people who dislike you because your actions harmed them. You can apologize, but they are not obligated to forgive you.

It’s not gonna be okay unless you make it okay. I often hear people say: it’s gonna be okay. Well, it’s probably gonna be okay, if you actually put the effort to make it okay. And sometimes, you have to let go, even the big things.

It is true that we are each and all going to die. Many immediately--and irrationality--conclude that this makes everything preceding death meaningless. But this just simply doesn't follow. In fact, for countless people who have not even been religious the fact of death has made life more meaningful and precious. Yes we are small, finite, mortal. Load More Replies...The supernatural jesus almost certainly never existed. There may have been a person(s) that the fictional jesus was based on, but no one has superpowers. Even if jesus was real, he was a real c-u-nt! Why did jesus supposedly heal some lepers, but not cure the disease leprosy itself? Was he playing favorites? Is he an as-shole? Incompetent? Doesn't have the power? Doesn't have the will? Science has largely cured the disease leprosy. Thank scientists. Jesus said that, I come not to bring peace, but a sword. He came to separate families and turn mothers against sons, brothers against each other, etc.
here's one that nobody wants to hear: The Covid virus will run its course. If you study every epidemic there has ever been, the susceptible always die off. Then the plague ends. The people with sturdy genes and bloodlines survive. Sorry folks, but even with vaccines and the latest antiviral drugs, this will be the case with Covid also. Yes, take the vaccines, always a good thing. Yes, wear masks, socially distance, isolate, wash hands, and do all the other things the experts recommend. But the virus will mutate 100 times over before they develop the next version of vaccine or drug. Eventually, those with a susceptible weakness in the genes somewhere will die. That's how viruses work. The virus finds an exploitable weakness, and then it makes the most of it. The flu virus can be caught, exchanged, and transmitted by pigs, ducks, and humans. Whenever these are in close proximity like on a pig farm, mutations happen. It becomes much more complicated with bats thrown in the mix. Count yourself lucky & blessed if you have survived this long. Before it is all over, the number of deaths and crippling cases may be several times the current count. So stay safe & well!
here's another one nobody wants to hear: Your government is spying on you. They monitor every single email, social media post, or blog rant (including this one). Be careful what you say or put up. If you're an adult who needs to be told that not everyone will agree with you or life won't necessarily work out the way you imagine or even brushing your teeth is important then.......really?
People told me a lot of good or bad things when growing up. In fact, as we grew older, we lost that childhood innocence' or vision and growing up to see a bigger picture and different perspective. It can be hard to accept the wall in font of us had crumbled down that used to shield us from the big world. As we reach that age, we had to take it because there is no reset button in real life.

That is the season we are in right now. Bible prophecy is working itself out like slow gear works turning that will not be slowed or stopped, whether you acknowledge it or not. God sends remedial judgments to warn the nations to repent. If they do not repent, the judgments will become much more severe. The next thing on the prophetic calendar is the pre-tribulation rapture. Then follows the 7-year Tribulation period. God will send multiple horrific judgments like never before seen on earth. The next thing is the Second Coming, where King Jesus literally returns to earth at the head of a great army to intervene decisively in the battle of Armageddon.
There are key catchwords and phrases they look for that will get you flagged and monitored. https://www.zdnet.com/article/top-374-keywords-the-u-s-government-monitors/... George Orwell was right. Big Brother is definitely watching. Never make any threats online against anyone.
I'll likely get downvoted for this comment but here goes.... Aren't a lot of these just common sense? And who are these "truths" aimed at? Adults? If you're an adult who needs to be told that not everyone will agree with you or life won't necessarily work out the way you imagine or even brushing your teeth is important then.......really?
People told me a lot of good or bad things when growing up. In fact, as we grew older, we lost that childhood innocence' or vision and growing up to see a bigger picture and different perspective. It can be hard to accept the wall in font of us had crumbled down that used to shield us from the big world. As we reach that age, we had to take it because there is no reset button in real life.
Let me ask you one question: If there's a real reset button in front of you and it will tell you at a specific date, Would you want to press that button?
Load More Replies...there will never be a world free of racism, sexism, or homophobia. People have already laid the groundwork for these twisted ideologies and there will always be those people who will look at these ideas at the wrong time and run with them.
Heres another one: if we all die at the same time, no one will miss or mourn anyone.
I would like to add: U dont get to experience something untill it happens to u, or presents itself in your personal universe. Basically, “s**t doesnt happen until it happens”
To quote my Dad: "Life's a s#*t sandwich... Either eat it, or starve."
Having a kid doesn't magically make you a good person, your problems any more important than anyone else's, or your struggles any more valid than the next person. And no, I'm NOT going to regret my choice to not have children. I'm sorry you regret your decision to, but don't deflect your issues onto me.
Everything comes to a conclusion. It may not be the one that makes you happy, or the one that you wanted, or expected, it's just the end.
Some of these are not TRUTH, but rather opinion. They should read "I don't know" section.
Impossible to return to a normal state of health , mind, strength and spirit.
Load More Replies...here's another one nobody wants to hear: God is judging the nations with warning or harbinger judgments. The bible predicts the end-times apostasy. Then he will set up the Millennial Kingdom, a time of unprecedented peace, harmony, and happiness. Get ready, the Lord is coming soon. Learn about the many different terms I have used here at: https://www.gotquestions.org/... Learn about the End Times here: https://christinprophecy.org/sermons/50-reasons-we-are-in-the-end-times/... learn about harbinger judgments at: https://www.raptureready.com/... https://harbingersdaily.com/... I know this is not the narrative you are used to out there, that this is not the future you are expecting, and this will provoke discussion. Be nice, okay? No insults. Intelligent discussion invited. Downvote all you want, but just be nice about it. Rabbi Jonathan Cahn put up a great video here: http://www.thebigwobble.org/p/front-page.html
This is a post to remind people that they are miserable and that they always will be… BP is becoming more and more about negativity. Such a shame because I used to like it.
As compared to Trump; a pedophile, xenophobic, racist, sexist, incestuous, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, trash excuse for a person?
