Cold truths are hard to swallow for a reason. They strip us of the illusion that everything’s in our control and that we know things best. But in reality, that’s not how things work, and who likes to be told that?!

What’s a truth no one wants to hear?” wondered Redditor u/grubbseuph11 on r/AskReddit and people shared some illuminating and brutally honest responses, like the hard-to-digest fact that “friends will come and go,” and that “no matter how likeable you may be, there are always going to be certain people who don't like you, sometimes for no particular reason.”

So let’s get ready to be hit by a cold shower that should make you rethink this whole perspective on our lives, and be sure to check out our previous post with more hard truths right here.

American brain washing... "thank you for your service"... I mean, yes, thank you! But war needs to be feared not celebrated!

Especially when you are in military who goes to a war in foreign country which doesn't attack your country in the same way. "Possible threat to world peace" is not the reason to send your armed military troops to some country or drop bombs on said country.

I think this is the swing back from the Vietnam era, where the public blamed the soldiers and not the politicians who sent them over there. The soldiers were treated horrendously. Since then, I think there's been a realization that maybe we need to treat our troops a bit better. And the pendulum just kept swinging...

Had a guy harassing me on the street and when I told him to go f himself he started screaming like a nut case about how he was a vet from Iraq and fought for my rights. Dude, my family has fought in every single American War and that does not give them the right to verbally assault other. Dude was a complete asshole.

There's a lot of fetishizing there, not actual respect. For instance, a guy interrupted me to thank me for my service after I mentioned I was in the Air Force, then cussed me when I said that inequality I saw there really brought me to my anti-racist, democratic-socialist views.

Making US military service members into "Heroes" was a massive marketing undertaking by the US military (and their consultants) as a result of the lessons learned from the Vietnam war. The military realized that a lot of people saw their own military as villains - baby killers who dropped napalm on children, raped and burned villages, etc. This marketing campaign has been vey successful. The US military has had examples horrific misdeeds in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. but these were quickly suppressed by the public since their "Heroes" can do no wrong.

Yeah, it's an American thing. It's all part of the weird patriotism that also makes (a certain group of them) obsessed with flags, guns, meat, God and boring sports nobody else plays. Thankfully they're not all like that.

Same thing goes for people who go to church/temple/mosque/misc place of worship. On TV news you sometimes see stories where someone does something terrible and they interview a neighbor who says something like, "but he was a good boy, he always went to church". Being religious does not make you a good person.

Agreed! There are heroes in all fields and jerks in all fields. True, I think it takes a certain type of person to enter into a certain job (please no one jump on me about not appreciating people) but, that doesn't necessarily make you a saint. I've known nurses who are spiteful and I've known people in looked-down-upon jobs who are just the best people you will ever meet.

True, assholes exist on both sides, but no other job or profession makes the new worker sign over a blank check on day 1 that reads "up to and including my life if needed" in the amount column. I don't know about you but that makes them heroes enough for me. Wanna talk about a hero cult ? What about teachers or doctors or nurses ? Send little Johnny home with a stack of homework and you're a hero. Give me a break. No other job has a 3 month summer vacation with prorated pay over the 12 months. There's a cult for you.

Exactly the point, politicians send their militaries into war, so if you're a solder you're not defending your country, you are fighting for a politician. No one in Iraq was thinking of invading the west, our solders went over there because Bush thought it was a good idea.

After 9/11, there seemed to be a misplaced glorification of first responders along this same line. At one point, when the mayor of New York ordered the fire fighters working to clear the rubble of the towers, they went all batshit crazy saying how that was insulting their work, and how there were dead heroes in the carnage. That was allowed to get out of hand. They were not the qualified people to be removing debris and rubble in the search of victims. Their job was back in the fire house.

yes....this one is so true. I know a few people who say "you need to respect them." No. I don't. I respect those deserving of respect, not because they're military. I know a few military people that are absolute trash human beings. The other issue of "having to respect them" is when people say "they fought so you can be free." That's not really true. Short of the Revolution, Civil War and War of 1812, we commit troops for empire and corporate interests. A tough pill to swallow for many in the US.

I'm grateful always for their service. But as a server in a restaurant I get aggravated!! I pay taxes that pay for their services. So how is it okay for them to ask me for their discount & to not tip me one cent?!? And it's about 90% of veterans that do this to me! I have to pay a tip out at the end of my shift. So if your bill was $100 & you leave me nothing, I pay $2 plus waiting on your every need. I know their job is extreme!! But you chose it. Treat everyone appropriately!!! It's something I thought people who served in the military did or was supposed to do. I know my WWII veteran grandfather who raised me did. Just be nice humans. Everyone. Please

I worked for the federal govt. Had a lot of employees and volunteers who were veterans. In my experience, the men and women who go about their business, not bragging or boastful, no expectation of entitlement are usually those who have seen combat and just want to return to a respectful civilian life. The ones who you see coming from a mile away wearing military T-shirts, blaring flags and spouting about what all they deserve tend to have sat stateside or worked in the cafeteria (not that there's anything wrong with that). Had one older gentleman who volunteered for 13 years. It was not until he died that we learned he had been a medic in the battlefields of WWII.

Also, when a soldier is killed in battle, it is said "He gave his life for (insert cause here). " No, not unless he threw himself on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers, or something like that. In the vast majority of cases when a soldier is killed in battle, he didn't *give* his life, it was forcibly *taken* from him. (This applies to police officers as well.)

Everyone who serves in the USA? Why would a god just bless and keep the USA? Or bless and keep everybody who serves in all countries? That doesn’t make sense either because many countries directly oppose each other. Do you have any scientific evidence that any gods even exist?

Except that US military men and women haven't had to fight for your freedom and protection since WW2. In the last 30 years they fought for the protections and benefits of oil companies, construction companies (especially Haliburton) , and the US Defense contractors (General Dynamics, Lockhead Martin, etc.)

In order to find out why exactly it's so hard to swallow a hard truth, and how we should react to it, Bored Panda spoke with Susan Petang, a certified divorce coach and the creator of “The Quiet Zone Coaching,” who teaches women how to stop feeling overwhelmed and start waking up happy in the morning again.

“When we develop close relationships, we expect those people to be gentle with us, not hurt us,” said Susan explaining why hard truths are not pleasant to hear. “When they offer up a hard truth, it violates the expectation that the person isn't going to cause us pain. We want them to love and encourage us—but we don't always realize that a hard truth is being given to us with love and encouragement, with our best interests in mind.”

I have a professional qualification where you have to have said "sorry, I can't answer that question" to qualify. My boss primed the customer to ask something silly.

“Often, what someone else calls a ‘hard truth’ we call ‘criticism,’” she said. “If a criticism is true, we can agree and apologize, then work to make it right—or we can ignore and deflect it if it isn't true.”

Moreover, Susan said that when someone we care about delivers a hard truth, we should take that opinion more seriously, because this is a person whose opinion we trust. “I advise my clients to think about the intention behind the message. If the intention is to help us, prevent us from making a mistake, or intervene before we get hurt, it's worthwhile to consider.”

Susan advises asking yourself if the "hard truth" is really true. “Be brutally honest with yourself—remember why your loved one brought it up to you in the first place!”

“It's beneficial to hear a hard truth when we're hurting someone else, hurting ourselves, or not being true to our values,” she explained and added: “So situations that look like that would be drug/alcohol abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, bad financial or career decisions, or dating someone married if you're religious.”

I wish more people understood the concept of "risk". You can totally be 20lb over weight and still be healthy RIGHT NOW. All it means is that you are gambling that you will be healthy tomorrow or next week or next year. It is also not a guarantee. If there is a risk factor that one in ten overweight men will have a heart attack, and you gather nine of your overweight friends you cannot say with complete accuracy which one of you it will be. It is a gamble - some people are happy to gamble, and accept the fact they may lose. But there's a difference between knowing it's a possibility and being scared into thinking it's a certainty.

This is a terrible movie trope. Keep pestering and chasing and eventually the other person will fall madly in love with you. Sorry, but it doesn't work like that. You will go to prison for stalking and may find yourself on the receiving end of somebody else's love. You don't want that. You really don't want that.
