Thousands of President Donald Trump's supporters shocked the world when they violently stormed the U.S. Capitol building, leading to evacuations, injuries, arrests, and deaths.
The crowd initially gathered at the National Mall earlier in the day to protest the November election results as Congress started counting the Electoral College votes. However, the rally turned to rioting as people with "Make America Great Again" hats and Trump flags breached Capitol barricades, smashed windows, and scaled the building's balconies, prompting Vice President Mike Pence to be swept to a secure location and the Senate chamber to be evacuated.
At least five people died, including a woman shot by police.
A joint session of Congress reconvened Wednesday night to count the Electoral College votes, confirming President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
World leaders have condemned these violent acts and so did the people on the Internet. Here are some of their reactions.
Earlier in the day, Trump encouraged his supporters to protest at the US Capitol.
"We're going to walk down to the Capitol. And we're gonna cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. And we're probably not going to be cheering, so much for some of them, because you'll never take back our country with weakness, you have to show strength and you have to be strong," he said at his rally.
The President promised he would join them too, but Trump retreated to the White House in his SUV and watched on television as the violence unfolded on Capitol Hill.
Trump eventually addressed his supporters, telling them to "go home" hours after the riot started, but spent a large amount of time in the one-minute video lying about his election loss.
"I know your pain, I know you're hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election and everyone knows it. Especially the other side. But you have to go home now. We have to have peace," he said.
Later on in the evening, Trump justified the mob's actions and praised them.
"These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!" he said, in a tweet that was later deleted by Twitter.
