This City Granted The Right For This Tree To Own Itself And It’s Brilliant
It may be hard to believe, but there’s a tree in the city of Athens, Georgia that not only owns itself, this white oak tree also owns the land within eight feet of its base.
The legend has it that this tree, which is commonly known as ‘The tree that owns itself’, was deeded ownership by William H. Jackson in the early 1800s. Jackson decided to do this out of the love he felt for it. The marker next to the tree reads as follows: “For and in consideration of the great love I bear this tree and the great desire I have for its protection, for all time, I convey entire possession of itself and all land within eight feet of the tree on all sides.” Despite the fact that the deed remains missing, citizens of Athens recognize and respect the tree’s ownership of itself and the land.
Unfortunately, the oak became diseased and was blown down by a windstorm in 1942. But someone planted one of its acorns and the new tree that grew out of it was named ‘The son of the tree that owns itself’.
According to today’s law, it’s impossible for a tree to hold property, so it’s up to the city and it’s citizens to protect the oak.

Share on FacebookPeople can be so ridiculous sometimes. At the time this all went down it seemed "cute" to give ownership of a tree that may have been used to hang or whip people you refused to give ownership of themselves to. And then in 2018, in this post, all turn a blind eye to that except this a*s clown Joe Clark and he abd PyroarRanger thinks its funny. Loving people and acknowledging the pain of others isnt hard. I get it. No one here had anything to do with that. So said all the non slaveowning people of America and the neighbors of the crematia in Poland and German who knew and did and said nothing. The silent and uneffected majority are always to blame when the evil minority are left unchecked.
Would like to welcome you into my local forest - completely dead- all the trees fell down and nobody heard them you will get lost forever even though it barely more than 2 acres - and you are likely to get shot -- have to ask permission at the local farm even to dare go in- to see if they are shooting that day and work out if you are going to mistook for a fox or a deer
Imagine if you could so this with cars, animals, haha that’d mess up a lot for goverment and their utter greedy ness
This is really cool, one day tho the trees will take over and conquer the land calling it the UNITED LANDS OF WOOD PLANTS!!!!!!
The line "It may be hard to believe, but there’s a tree in the city of Athens, Georgia that holds ownership of itself and eight feet of land around it" is directly underneath the part where it says that obviously laws don't allow as tree to own itself, and that this is observed just as a gesture. BP would be much better if it wasn't written with so much (phoney) sensationalism, like so much of media nowadays.
