Everyone’s longing for traveling these days. I don’t know how much I’d give for that sweet moment of being seated on a plane, cramming my legs by the window, hoping there won’t be a screaming baby sitting right next to me. Oh, the joys of open borders from the pre-pandemic world!

And as we wait for the covid chaos to stop savaging the globe, and our beloved air, sea, and land transport to resume to normal, let’s take a look at some precious pics of pets traveling instead of us. From dogs bamboozling the plane cabin to pony-turned flight attendants, these are the support animals who make the joys of commuting even more pawsome.

Hand-picked by Bored Panda, the compilation combines two of our favorite things, animals and travel, so make sure to hit the upvote button on your favorite animals on board sightings!

Even though most pet owners would never part with their furry friends, in reality, traveling with animals is not as easy as it sounds. But the hassle starts even before traveling. For example, if you’re about to board an international flight, you should make sure that your pet meets the requirements for your destination country and is healthy enough to travel.

On top of that, every airline has different pet travel requirements, so you want to make sure you know them before boarding. Also, it depends on what kind of animal you're traveling with. For example, if you want to take a pet bird or other exotic animal with you out of the US, you may have to contact additional agencies, like USDA APHIS Veterinary Services (VS) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

For further information, check out this official list from Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for the current pet travel health rules.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on airlines that allow pets to travel, only small dogs and cats that can fit in special carriers under the seat are allowed in the cabin. It’s critical that their owners take care of them during layovers.

Other airlines may not allow pets in the cabin and will transport them as cargo in specially constructed holds with ventilation and heating. And since for animals, it’s usually better to travel this way since it's darker and quieter, for their owners, it usually means higher transportation charges.

As you can imagine, loading and unloading your pet as cargo can be incredibly stressful to your pet. The CDC encourages pet owners to get their pets used to their carrier before the flight so they feel less anxious.

Other tips from the CDC include purchasing flights with fewer connections and layovers, picking departure and arrival times to avoid extreme heat or cold, and making sure your pet feels safe and calm before and after the flight.

Some pet owners may find sedatives and tranquilizers alleviate their pets’ stress during flight, but the International Air Transport Association discourages using such medication since it “could harm animals while in flight.” Whatever you decide, make sure to consult a veterinarian to make sure both you and your pet are ready to have a flight.

I'll probably get downvoted for this. Support dog or cat I can understand but support horse? Support pig? Sorry, I just think that's an attention-seeking affectation.

It's not just emotional support. This is a task trained service animal and assists their disabled handler. Some people require bigger animals because they need mobility tasks and dogs can't do it

I agree. I'm really happy to see some of the major airlines taking a stand about "emotional support" animals. I grew up on a farm, and you do NOT want some of these animals relieving themselves in an enclosed space like a plane or a train!

If you can train them to guide, which they can, you can train them to poo at the right times too.

Actually Mrs. Hurst ,In the US miniature horses and dogs are the only animals allowed to be service animals. As for the stricter guidelines ;it's made things more difficult for people with PTSD service animals and the guidelines are a result of falsified service animals which injure people or genuine service animals but of course it's because of this mini horse(not pony) that has undergone a long period of training and is actually helping someone improve their quality of life so that they may have a reasonably independent life. Good day.

To be honest your comment just reeks of some self-righteous bigoted nitwit thinking, yes, I have limited experience with this issue, but I'm going to rant and spout out my uninformed opinion without doing any research because I'm a lazy angry reactionary. Also, they are miniature horses, not ponies. There is a reason they are one of the just two types of service animals recognized under Title III.
