It's the difference between cheap generic c**p that's pushed onto out of towners versus buying a momento that captures the essence of the memory.

You can be a traveler and do both of these things. Taking a cab in a foreign place is an adventure too!

This is dumb. So to be a traveler I have to sleep in a tent and only wear 1 shirt and never see any major symbols of the place I'm seeing? I love to travel to experiance the local flair but I don't sleep in a tent and I don't miss out on seeing what I want to see and I bring more then one shirt. I'm not going to sleep outside in Iceland in November .

So because I have physical limitations that preclude me from camping I'm not a real traveler?

Yes, as all comments point out, this is just stupid generalizations signifying nothing. I like to say "I'm a great tourist" because I explore where I live. I also lived in Asia for three years, during my forties with my wife (so not because of that not-uncommon "Asian women" fetish some Americans demonstrate. So, visiting 20 countries, I'm a traveler, but no cartoon shows how one's zeal to learn about unfamiliar peoples & customs, and smiling at every person one meets on the globe makes traveling more fulfilling!

Oh hells no... if it doesn't have a solid roof, I'm not in it.

This is pretty much the same generalization as predicated above; urban vs rural. This makes no sense.

So you're going to sleep in a tent in NYC or London or Buenos Aires.... go it.
