Anyone who has worked in customer service and interacted with a fair share of strangers on a daily basis knows how tiring it can be. Waiters and bartenders are no exception; they are fully aware of how much resilience it takes to smile at someone while they curse at you, complaining about (trivial) things that are out of your control. The job demands character and deserves proper recognition. Yet their salary is often so low, they have to rely on tips just to get by.

Sadly, some sleazy customers use tipping just as another way of disrespecting the staff serving them. For example, people leave fake money with a picture of their preferred presidential candidate. Or put a few bills inside a full glass and place it upside down, so the only way to clean the table is to make a mess. In fact, people have developed so many of these dirty tactics, Bored Panda decided to make a list, showing what not to do when you get your check. Continue scrolling and take a look.

Interestingly, a relatively new study has found that demanding jobs offering employees little control are among the most detrimental people's mental and physical health.

Scientists at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, analyzed the data of over 138,700 participants from six previous studies on job-related health. Using this information, they classified jobs into four groups based on control and how psychologically demanding the role: low demand and low control jobs such as manual labour were labelled "Passive," while jobs with high control like architects and scientists were "Low Stress," and jobs with both high demand and high control (teachers or doctors) were "Active."

I think the biggest problem is the service industry in the USA does not pay their employees a proper wage in the first instance. This results in the workers heavily relying on tips to subsidise their income. In European countries employees are paid a minimum wage (ok, this isn’t always as much as it could be) and are less affected by what tips they receive. As well as shitty customers, employers should also take more responsibility for the income their staff receives.

The category labelled "High Stress" had jobs that were demanding offered low levels of control. Enter waiters and bartenders

Scientists found that waiters and waitresses have a 22% higher risk of stroke on average than those with low stress jobs. The figure jumps to 33% for women when you differentiate data by gender.

The research explained that while those holding down jobs we often consider demanding jobs like architects and scientists may seem like prime candidates for boiling blood pressure, work-related stress is largely dependent on whether or not you have a job where you feel in control and respected.

A neurosurgeon may be drained after a long, difficult day at work but they probably know society understand's the value of their labor. But imagine running in and out of the kitchen for 12 hours, bringing people food and ensuring they have a good time, only to have someone say "fu*k you" instead of leaving you a tip.

That is just a d**k thing to do. If everyone in the service industry got a different job then there would be no one to serve your sorry ass and food service would be non existent. PLUS it is not like people can pull jobs out of their arses.

Let's be honest, this is not the customer's problem. I don't know why americans(and some other countries) change the laws so that servers actually have a salary.

If you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip. If you can't afford to tip, either stay home or go somewhere like McDonald's where workers are paid a living wage and don't live off tips. It's pretty simple.

It seems pretty obvious few of you have been both poor and a parent. It's a bill for $11; it was clearly not a 5-star restaurant. It's more than a little possible this parent scraped together just enough to feed their kids a cheap meal and the $1.75 tip was just more than they could do. 'Can't tip, don't eat out' is peak privilege.

I worked in the food and beverage industry in Australia. Here, we do not expect tips normally. However, you do get tipped generously if you provide good service. That is what 'Tips' mean in our country. It's mean as a bonus and recognition of a job well done. In Japan, I tried to tip some hotel staff or restaurant after a meal, and they declined. To them, it's an insult to their honour (or something along those lines.) They think it is their duty to provide excellent service and they already get paid for it when they sign up for the job, regardless of how much they got paid. I understand that in the US, tips are large part of the waiting staff's income. But still, I don't think it's right if your waiter/waitress did not treat you well and still get a tip. It's meant to be a way to improve their service, like a bonus or something in a corporate environment.

There is a minimum amount: 10% of the bill is 'normal'. (Actually, it's insulting, but that's neither here nor there.) Most people tip 15% for lunch or casual dinners; 20% is good dining, and then there's up. We ended up inconveniencing one poor waitress--and there were 17 of us!--and I gave her a 50% tip because she'd been run ragged, even though it wasn't our fault. So it depends. I know what you mean about Japan: they took the job, so they have to do it right. Period. But on the other hand, even if they do a lousy job--it could be that the establishment takes a large cut of their tips. It's not right, but it happens--and they *still* don't get a living wage!

This one I am not going to judge on because maybe them going out to dinner is a rare treat because they usually can’t afford it. You never know, they could have saved for months to have a night out. Plus it isn’t their fault the minimum wage is pathetic.

is this 'american' way of thinking? I'm living in europe, If I would like to eat out, I'm going out and I don't have to pay tips. Don't blame people who just want to eat something, blame your 'great american' system that it's not paying properly to the staff.

This one is the only one that makes me feel sympathetic. I'm a single mom with a special needs child. I might not have enough money to pay my rent and still take my kid to a fast food place because that's the only food she'd take after literally not eating for days. I did find myself scraping for dimes and cents and even using a 50 cent coin from my coin collection because I needed to feed my kid the food that she'd accept. (and please no comments like she would have eaten if she was hungry enough - mental disorders do not work that way.) The amount above does not say "fancy restaurant" like many examples above. I can feel this mom who possibly had to spend the last $$ on her card for her kid and did not have anything left for a tip.
