Interestingly, a relatively new study has found that demanding jobs offering employees little control are among the most detrimental people's mental and physical health.
Scientists at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, analyzed the data of over 138,700 participants from six previous studies on job-related health. Using this information, they classified jobs into four groups based on control and how psychologically demanding the role: low demand and low control jobs such as manual labour were labelled "Passive," while jobs with high control like architects and scientists were "Low Stress," and jobs with both high demand and high control (teachers or doctors) were "Active."

When I waited tables in college, there was a woman who would come into our upscale restaurant at lunch with her two kids (we didn't require reservations at lunch). She would order special requests that weren't on the menu (and took a ton of time to make), leave a huge mess, and then not tip. I used to dread it when I'd see her walk in and get seated in my section.

A lot of these situations could be remedied by closing the minimum wage loophole. Tipping for great service vs tipping for their basic income.
Exactly! The minimum wage for tipped service people is 2.13 an hour, and it hasn't been raised in years. But call for the minimum wage to be a living wage, and right -wingers knee-jerk blab rubbish about $20 tacos and robots working in restaurants.
Although a lot of them go overboard they aren't entirely wrong about prices. Take a look at what things like apartment rent has done Every time minimum wage increases. Unless you cap businesses who's costs Aren't majorly impacted by minimum wage. All raising it does is make them decide "Oh I can have more money from people." Funny thing is it's usually the right wing nuts who raise those prices then wonder why the complaints continue.
I am a knee-jerk nut job who thinks minimum wage solves nothing, but taking away the special category service staff find themselves in seems the only way to fairly solve this.

Mandating a minimum wage only makes the numbers higher, it doesn't actually do what we'd want it to ( benefit the workers). Minimum wage is the level of water, and the cost of food, clothes, housing, etc are buoys on that water. The higher the water, the higher the buoys. Where minimum wage becomes particularly harmful is when businesses start importing (many times illegally) immigrants who can be exploited to take the place of American workers because they don't want to pay the cost of an American workers.

It doesn’t, no, but Americans have complained about this for decades, yet when Hillary Clinton promised to get rid of the $2/hour tipped minimum wage, I saw hardly any Americans talking about it, even in primarily Democrat areas of the internet. Another problem is that in most states, if a business pays a full wage, it is illegal to allow servers to accept tips. Supposedly it would make it harder to tax tips. As if everyone reports what they actually make anyway. BTW, as quite a few learned this year, it is always best to report everything you earn in a tipped position. You will be grateful for that little bit extra you had to pay in taxes when your unemployment is based on the actual wage you made and not the bare minimum many report. What you report also affects your credit rating, workman's comp pay, social security pension......

I think you're going the wrong way on that. You don't REWARD horrible decisions with more money. What we need to do is replace them with iPads and some sort of "cable-car plate delivery system", and let their useless asses starve. To be honest, the like $3 an hour they "earn" now is far too high. For God's sake, their literal job is to carry plates from one side of the room to the other. They don't make the menu, they don't make the food, they don't even wash the dishes. They carry other people's work. That's it. They are remarkably overpaid already.
Please, just wait tables for 2 months and come back and say that. We do way more than you think, often in crap conditions, while dealing with crap customers. What is truly sad, even at $2.13 + tips, I still made more than a lot of people paying off loans for a BA degree. Please remember, we are the ones who insure that you get what you order, in a timely manner, proper temp, etc. we are the caretakers of your food, from the moment we describe or answer your questions regarding the menu items, to correctly putting it into the POS, to communicating with the often drunk or high cooks, to inspecting and approving your food before bringing it out. And, while I've never stooped to this, before showing your attitude to the next server, you would be amazed at the disgusting things I have seen hateful customers unknowingly chow down on.
Because you can't carry a plate yourself, obviously.

My rule: Do not eat out if I cannot also afford to tip 15-20%. It's a shame that it's even legal to pay waitstaff less than minimum wage and force them to rely on tips as well. Another great job, USA (sarcasm).
As a Brit tipping is something I rarely do, I would just not think of tipping because you pay your staff a living wage in civilised countries...

Having to tip is fine.. (well not really).. I plan to do it in US since outsiders have to accept local customs. But isn't it atrocious that on average we should give more amount than standard tax percentage (10%)?

I am genuinely questioning the portion, I thought it makes sense that if we must tip, then at most-- The percentage doesn't exceed 10% regular tax and therefore, of course the wage per hour given from business owners to servers need to be adjusted accordingly. If you read my other comment, I stated that the system is wrong not the people. Unless "jr." in your name indicates that you're not even an adult yet, maybe try smarter instead of harder next time.

Actually, if a server does not make minimum wage after their regular wage and tips, the employer must supplement their pay to ensure they get the state minimum wage. However, this is hard to track and I don't think a lot of servers or employers actually do that.

It's a silly system you guys are running in the US. On my first restaurant visit there I forgot to tip and the waitress followed me outside and demanded what was wrong with the service. I told her nothing was wrong and I just forgot because we don’t tip in my country. Judging by her look she didn't believe me. Anyway, I tipped her and felt pretty s***ty about the whole experience.
Reverse here. I started to leave a tip to someone in the EU and she got super-offended, and I had to stammer "Es tut mir leid! Ich komme aus den USA! Es ist unsere Gewohnheit!" (which is my A-1 German for I'm sorry! I'm from the US. It's our custom/habit").... She calmed and said something I understood to be "Oh, no problem, thank you for apologizing." (Or she cursed me to a life of doom. My German does suck.)

I gave my usual 20% tip and the person was really upset. I learned later that 10% is okay, whereas in the US, that's "cheap"... And in Germany, that particular place took it to mean they aren't good to their workers, I guess. (Like I said, A-level German.)

Actually, most of these are very rude, selfish, or outright stupid. The problem, however, is that serice workers in the US rely on tips. If tips would come as a small bonus for over-average service (or a bit more for outstanding service) while salaries would be in alignment with the job's duties, these kind of problems would not even exist. TL/DR: tips are not meant as a salary replacement but as a bonus to a decent salary.

As a server, I made $20-$100 per hour on tips. Minimum wage is $7.25 (back then, it was $4.50. Who is going to wait tables for $7.25/hour? It is long, hard, dirty work. Your clothing begins to smell like food, even when washed. Your feet ache. The hours are terrible. Tips make it worth doing.
The various establishments want their meal prices to look like a bargain. Sigh! If they paid a decent wage to begin with thees poor people wouldn't get stiffed, and people like 'I'm a single mother' wouldn't have excuses to fall back on; they'd have to pay the bill.
I have never understood why servers in America have to rely on tips to live, why can't they just be paid a normal wage? Minimum wage at the absolute least. It's repulsive.
It actually goes back to the 'gentry' who had live-in servants. They weren't paid jack because they received room, board and clothing. When Restaurants first cropped up, the people doing the waiting were all family. When they ha to start hiring, most customers looked down on *all* 'hired help', and said help was usually just there to find a husband, so it was felt they didn't have to pay very much. And it became custom, and eventually was grandfathered into the wage system 'because we can't afford anything more. We'd have to close.' (We still hear that, BTW.) Now it looks as if this will finally be addressed. I hope so.
This is true of the majority of restaurants in the US, but I doubt the servers at higher-end restaurants want to ditch the tipping system. They make six-figure salaries from tips alone.

Honestly tipping culture itself is sh*tty. It triggers "pettiness" image from customers and some kind of beggar mentality from service workers. I'm not saying the people are wrong, the system is.
It's just the same as the US healthcare system. Everyone is talking about how outrageous it is, but no one is making any effort to change it.
It's not that there's no effort to change it; it's that we need a more coordinated effort rather than the sporadic, usually localized efforts we've been getting. And it needs to have a louder, more focused voice to it. Most people don't realize there's a problem. Truth is, the living wage doesn't keep up with inflation. For every 1% increase in wages that the majority of John Q. Public receives, inflation will have gone up 5-8% at least three times, sometimes 4.

Do you know, exactly, any pointers on how to start changing the entire healthcare system of one of the largest countries in the world without harming anybody or making the system worse? Because if you think it's so easy I would love to know how you think we can do it right.
Actually it is, send people to Europe to learn how government is done, because the root problem in the US is not just the very rudimentary health system it is the underlying political and social structures that allows such a health system to exist.

In my country there is no thing as tipping system. Tipping is something someone does if they want to be polite and are thankful for the service they got. The majority doesn't tip and that's acceptable. But what i ve just read in this post is just rude and insulting.
All the fake money ones can be classed as criminal acts by using counterfeit money to pay for goods and services and these people should be reported and charged. Not only would the staff get the last laugh but when it gets known what happens with these scams, they will most likely stop.

1st of all - why should I tip every time. This is an option and a customer goodwill. In Europe/ Spain we tip only if we are really satisfied with the service. 2nd - we do not know how the service was. May be the waiter was rude, we see only the bill posted from the waiter.
I'm not American and tipping isn't part of our norm here (new zealand), but I'm pretty sure in America they rely on tips to make ends meet, their employer essentially underpay them because they will "get tips to make up the shortfall". It's a silly system I agree, but if I was in America (or any other country where tipping is customary) then I would tip, even if its just for that reason alone (that the system means they need the tip)
In the USA wait staff are paid next to nothing and rely on tips for their wages, which is a totally messed up system but what isn't totally messed up in that country? In Canada wait staff are paid the provincial servers minimum wage (around $12-$15/hr) but tipping is also customary typically 10-20%, I've only ever not tipped a hand full of times and it was due to really bad service or bad food etc.

I never put my tip on my receipt; I always give cash so I write "Given in Cash".

While it is not mandatory as such, it's mandatory morally because we know the servers aren't getting anything close to a real wage. This is only in the food service realm. In hotels and such, tipping is--not expected, but appreciated. People generally leave $1 a night, so the cleaning staff night get $2 for your weekend. This says you appreciate the work they did to keep your room clean. Some people don't tip the hotel service staff anything; others think their work should be at least noticed. People do enjoy their hard work being noticed, and money talks. In every industry but food service, tipping is a way of saying 'you did a great job.' But in restaurants, for some reason, the people working the hardest are screwed sideways.

Having lived in the US (my boyfriend is American) and being from Australia (where tipping is not a thing) its not like the meals are that cheap (sans tip) anyway in the US so wtf. It's more expensive for me to eat out in America than it is in Australia. US-ians say say giving restaurant workers minimum wage means its going to be 20 dollar tacos and blah blah blah but food doesn't cost that much here in Australia and we give them a min wage. I feel bad about seeing these receipts with no tip because it makes me think of all of the times that I don't leave a tip on my card, but leave one in cash instead. I write "0" in the tip line and leave the cash behind the bill. I know when I was a server, I appreciated cash tips. I would hate to see my receipt on here with someone claiming I didn't tip when I left 20 -30% in cash.
Just write the word cash in the tip section when you do that. That way there's no confusion
It also eliminates the possibility that the server tells the rest of the staff that they got stiffed and then pockets the tip because they’re supposed to tip out the staff that supported them. So, I worked as a waitress for a short time when I was attending university. Nothing even remotely close to these things ever happened to me. People are usually respectful. Also, i didnt receive tips because in italy waiters are paid a full salary and dont have to rely on customers for that.
