They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But we can also invert this popular phrase. As the subreddit r/trashy has shown time and time again, a few words can be worth a thousand pictures as well.
Collecting evidence that suggests the human race might be degrading, the members of this online community have spotted plenty of evocative signs. Like the one saying, "Sunbathing and barbeques are not allowed in the cemetery. Please show respect." Or another, stating that "We don't spit on your floors. Don't spit on ours."

We managed to get in touch with Ashley, a moderator of the subreddit, and they agreed to have a little chat with us. "It seems like people just like to piss other people off when they know they have an unpopular opinion," the Redditor told Bored Panda. "And others just don't have the mental capacity to realize when they're gross or out of line. Which leads to posting signs, bumper stickers, t-shirts and etc that just put their trashy thought process on display."
But even though the content on r/trashy can be quite off-putting, it still captivates and intrigues a large audience. "It's kind of like driving past a bad car accident. You know you probably shouldn't look, but you do anyway ... There's something about watching shi*** people being shi*** that's both infuriating and comical all at the same time."

As you might imagine, the moderators have to do plenty of 'policing' in a sub like this. "From racist, sexist, and homophobic comments to posts that are so trashy we would get our sub banned if we didn't remove it (think CP and other awful things that don't belong anywhere)," Ashley explained.
"Those kinds of things don't happen often, luckily, but I've seen a lot of unfortunate examples on this sub because, well, people are trashy. There's a difference between posting something for amusement's sake and posting something just to be horrible. It's a fine line, but it's still a line we don't cross here. We champion trashy content but don't tolerate trashy behavior from our subscribers. So most of what gets removed are just comments where people are just being assholes to each other. And occasionally, on the more controversial posts, we will have to lock the comment thread because there's just too much shit to sift through."
The moderators try their best to keep their sub a place where everyone can participate without feeling threatened. "It's a sh**show over here, but it's an inclusive sh**show. Which I think is part of the appeal."

From a biological perspective, there's no question that the human race is still moving forward. Michael J. Dougherty, assistant director, and senior staff biologist at Biological Sciences Curriculum Study in Colorado Springs, for example, said that all changes in the gene frequencies of populations—and quite often in the traits those genes influence—are by definition evolutionary changes.
"The notion that humans might regress or 'devolve' presumes that there is a preferred hierarchy of structure and function—say, that legs with feet are better than legs with hooves or that breathing with lungs is better than breathing with gills. But for the organisms possessing those structures, each is a useful adaptation," Dougherty explained.

But social degeneration is something different. "The great summit of declinism," according to writer Adam Gopnick, "was established in 1918, in the book that gave decline its good name in publishing: the German historian Oswald Spengler's best-selling, thousand-page work The Decline of the West."
Now, the belief that society going backward is especially popular in the UK. In a 2015 survey, 70% of Britons agreed with the statement that "things are worse than they used to be," even though at the time they were in fact "richer, healthier and longer-living than ever before".

How Many People Died Before This Sign Got Put Up?
Just Why
I'm so glad, for them and me, that the final judgement on this one isn't mine. This just hits a chord so deep.
Interestingly, people are also trying to calculate it. There's this thing called the Social Progress Index (SPI), which measures the extent to which countries provide for the social and environmental needs of their citizens. It uses 54 indicators in the areas of basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunity to progress, showing the relative performance of nations.
In 2020, the United States continued to backslide, declining both in absolute terms and relative to its wealthy, world-power peers, ranking just 28th in social progress and is only one of three countries declining in social progress over the past decade.
So as much as we'd like to think these signs are just flukes, there might be some truth to them.

My Local Vets Office...
Even worse when they will be abandoned elsewhere, who knows where?
Load More Replies...At least they are abandoning them at a safe place... I've seen videos of people just dropping off their pets at the side of a road
I once rescued a kitten in an underground road intersection. Luckily it was very late night and there was not much traffic.
Load More Replies...These people are awful, but if you put a sign like this, at least put an address of a shelter or something so that people who won't leave them at your place at least know where they can actually go. The alternative is that they will dump the poor animal in the streets or worse.
Every vet office has about a 2 page list of animal shelters if you ask instead of just leaving an animal in front of a closed business.
Load More Replies...Now that covid is dragging on all the people who rushed out ot get pets at the start are now dumping them. A local shelter has 90 so far. Pets are not 'fashion statements' or 'accessories'.
I was afraid this would happen when people starting hoarding pets that didn't really think it through when getting them
Load More Replies...That's how I adopted one of my cats, he just recently passed away of old age. I had a beautiful Maine-C**n, but he was old and sick. The night we went to put him to sleep, a little girl came into the office with a newborn kitten. The lady at the counter shoed her away "Put it back where you found it". I was already devastated by the prospect of losing my beautiful Leo, but I couldn't let that tiny thing die overnight in a parking lot. We took him right there and then and he was with us for 18 years, fat, content and a giant pain in the ass, but he had a good life with lots of love.
Wish all people had your kind heart and acted in your loving, respectful and exemplary way
Load More Replies...Geez.. the cold hard truth is, they will just abandon them elsewhere. People are scum.
The shadow of the guy that took the picture looks like a slim shady😂😂
OK something is not adding up. I had to fill out six pages to rescue I said to rescue a f*****g MUT. But you mean to tell me people are giving away dogs at the vet and didn’t nobody say s**t about that until now? They want me to have a yard for a rescue but my $2500 golden doodle oh it’s cool for him to stay in a townhouse. Make it make sense
Would the vets office rather have them dumped at the side of a busy road or thrown into the river?
A lot of vets can't/won't take on the responsibility or cost of an abandoned pet that isn't microchipped...what usually happens is animal control gets called to pick up the pet and if the animal looks sick, injured or just old they will be put down. If the pet is young and healthy they will try to find it a home but otherwise if you're abandoning a sick pet in front of the vets office you are most likely signing their death cert.
Load More Replies...Some idiots might abandon them a block up or down instead, sadly enough.
Really sad, though it’s better than dumping them in the middle of nowhere
That pisses me off. My dog was abandoned at an animal shelter as a tiny puppy and my other dog's vet thought she'd make a great friend for my other dog so he got her for me. Poor doggo still has nightmares every single night for the last three years. She has severe separation anxiety and abandonment issues and cries loudly even if I step outside to retrieve my mail.
I understand this but then again, wouldn't it be better to abandon a pet here than on the side of a road or something? There seriously needs to be a Safe Haven for animals.
Well, when it costs that much to "abandon" it while you are there, some of us have no other choice. If I need to surrender an animal or if I found an abandoned animal, I should not have to pay to do so.
We have a vet at the end of our block. Over the last twenty years, we have adopted 6 felines that wandered from there to our little home. We have loved each and every one of them. But we have rebuilt our fence so that the three cats we have now can't escape and others can't enter. My wife wants to adopt a dog when our cats are gone.
remove that sign! people will be dumping their animals somewhere else now. Better to have animals there and video of the pieces of s**t who ditched them.
Do NOT dump your animals "in the country". They eat the food for farmers' working dogs and cats, and kill them as well. Feral dogs often form packs, and not only kill small livestock such as chickens (every one they can get to - just for sport, not only for hunger), but will kill sheep and even calves. If you abandon your pet in rural areas, farmers will not take them in - they will shoot them. Your pet has a better chance at life if you take them to the pound.
Most people who dump their pets give zero f***s about their own animals, let alone other people's animals. They are s**t human beings and deserve a healthy dose of karma, preferably instantly.

There Has To Be A Story Behind This
My Neighbors Who Took A Delivery That Didn’t Belong To Them
Might not have been their fault. I once took a delivery they didn’t belong to me. The package of food from a restaurant had no address on it. I called the restaurant who wouldn’t tell me who ordered it nor would they send the delivery people back to deliver it properly. There are tons of townhouses here and I wasn’t going to go door to door knocking. I was alone with 3 small kids. So I let them eat it. Was good sushi. Eventually it seems the person who ordered it got my address from somebody because she came by asking for her food. I felt bad the kids already ate it and was pissed the restaurant or delivery company gave out my address. She was annoyed but I really did what I could to get the food to the right place. I just had no way of knowing who it belonged to. The restaurant actually told me in no uncertain terms not to take it anywhere as it’s a liability to them when this happens to have strangers take a delivery of food then redeliver it.

One of my properties is a condo in a really nice building, in the stairwell they had to put up a sign saying "no peeing" I guess someone was urinating in the stairwell. I can't imagine anyone in that building doing that.

The one with the barbecue and sunbathing in the cemetery was written by Hammersmith and Fulham council in London. I used to work in retail in the UK - getting money from socks and "other" places was a semi regular occurrence. I also saw a sign outside a massage parlor that tells people to stop asking for happy endings. Yes, some of the pics are obviously from the US but there's barely a single one that I couldn't imagine in the UK.
