I read a study that found the most solid and long lasting relationships had hardly any trace on social media, and couples who tend to be the most insecure and damaged, are the ones who's pages are riddle with "best boyfriend/girlfriend ever," couple selfies, and declarative statements of love. Interesting stuff...
That's rather correlation than causation, but yes, it makes sense. Posting a lot of lovey-dovey stuff on social media about your relationship is usually a big sign of being insecure (and/or shallow) and craving for approval and attention from others on an unhealthy level, which is bound to put stress on the relationship sooner or later.

Sadly I don't remember such a time. I might be too young, but I do recall that even before social media, it was important who you date to keep your image, or as you said - "acception of others".

But unfortunately, if you don't let EVERYONE know that you are at least dating someone, there will be a Zillion Friend Requests, useless flirtations from colleagues, friends and what-not, and not to mention his/her b***h-ex & other hoes need to know the territory is taken. Paradox is that Social Media became 2 things- stop people from cheating (through stalking) and accommodate cheating (chatting with exes, flirting with people, stalking someone's photos)
