This Diner Has ‘Stupid Question’ On Their Menu And Charges 38 Cents For It

Anyone who has ever worked in customer service, or at least is familiar with the Karen meme, knows how annoying clients can be. In fact, some of them are borderline ridiculous. And while employees probably vent their frustrations in private, some places try to make their customers aware of how silly some of them can get. One of those places is a restaurant called Tom’s Diner which recently went viral for billing its customer a ‘stupid question’ charge. Yes, you’ve read that right.

Apparently, there’s a diner in Denver which jokingly charges its customers for asking stupid questions

The diner charges 38 cents to those customers who cannot get their heads wrapped around the simplest things.

They even have that written on their menu as a side option.

Of course, Tom’s Diner isn’t trying to offend anyone, in fact, their goal is to add some humor on the menu and it seems that it’s working well. After a Redditor shared a bill with a ‘stupid question’ charge, it quickly went viral.

The general manager of the diner, Hunter Landry, told TODAY Food that they are just trying to have some fun with their menu. “It’s meant to be playful. It’s good to keep things light in today’s world,” he explained. “When we have a good fun table that engages with us or when they ask about the charge, it’s always fun to add it on,” Landry added.

Turns out, the customers love this idea. Some even ask stupid questions on purpose. One customer wondered, “Are there any dues for the turkey club sandwich?” Another one asked, “Does the ice have any water in it?”

A few years ago, the diner’s menu included a few more funny options. For those who aimed for a healthy meal, the menu offered: ‘Skip your next meal’ for $Money well saved and ‘Walk home’ for $ Priceless.

That 38 cent charge may be a coincidence, but in Chinese (in Taiwan, at least), 38 means silly, brainless.

It would be interesting to have a follow up with the types of "stupid questions" they get asked. "Are there nuts in the peanut butter?"

Over the course of my life, I have heard many people say, "There is no such thing as a stupid question". After nearly 30 years of adulting I can definitely say, "Yes, there is."

"Turns out, the customers love this idea. Some even ask stupid questions on purpose. One customer wondered “Are there any dues for the turkey club sandwich?” another one asked, “Does the ice have any water in it?”" I bet the costumers are having fun and trying to one up each other in thinking of new stupid questions to ask and trying to make the staff and each other laugh. I know I'd love to visit or even work there. And I love the menus (the former and the current one) too

okay then if they're going to do this s**t, then I get charge THEM for coming around to my table every f*****g 5 minutes asking "is everything okay?" while I've got a mouthful of s**t. Come here to eat, not to constantly validate you.

Being autistic, I ask a lot of stupid questions about simple things. I can figure out big, complicated things, but simples things a lot of times confound me. At a distance, I can appreciate the humor, but it would be a sore spot for me if I asked something seriously (not being a Karen) and got a good-natured charge. I wouldn't complain. I'd just go home and kick myself for it for about a year. Not saying they shouldn't do it. I'm an abherration, so the world need not cater to me.

All of ask stupid questions in life, and all of us have to answer stupid questions. So get over the precious self-pity, and be kind and patient. Also, what one person thinks is a stupid question can make perfect sense to the person asking it.

Btw, in the article title, Stupid Question should be in quotation marks like these: "Stupid Question" Not 'Stupid Question' .... If you asked me which was correct, I'd think that was a very stupid question coming from a writer. (I'm a writer and an editor.) :-)

I was having breakfast one morning in a diner. The place was packed with a line of customers still waiting to be seated. A woman tells the waitress that she is allergic to eggs and if it’s possible to tell the cook to clean the grill and make her something. Sure, honey, we’ll clean the grill right up for you and ignore the rest of the 99 percent customers who are having eggs, and make your order instead. Sometimes people amaze me. I wish that diner charged for stupid requests.

I don't think that makes things more fun. Regardless of how little the amount is, you are charging people for asking your servers questions. If it showed up on my bill, I would take it out of the tip. I don't need to be scolded because my question was deemed stupid.

No, it's about them asking stupid questions. When I waited tables, I constantly got questions like "How many patties are in the double cheeseburger?" "What's in the bacon-lettuce-tomato sandwich?" "Is the chicken noodle soup vegetarian?" Honestly, they should charge far for stupid questions.
