Industry insiders say that the negotiations for the role are still in an early stage. However, the word on the street goes that after reading the script for Pinocchio, Tom Hanks himself has reached out to the director Robert Zemeckis to tell him that he wants to do the film. In fact, Disney has always wanted Tom Hanks as Geppetto. Deadline writes that the studio giant approached Tom years ago, but the deal was never made.

Robert Zemeckis—the director behind Forrest Gump and Cast Away, both of which featured Tom Hanks—will direct the film together with producers Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz. Disney will retell the animated classic Pinocchio from 1940. The tale tells the story of a living puppet who wants to prove himself worthy to become a real boy.
