Women Scientists Tweet “Sexy” Work Pics In Response To Male Nobel Laureate’s Sexist Comments
On June 9th, Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Sir Tim Hunt shocked the world by making sexist statements about women scientists at a women scientists' conference in South Korea. "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls … three things happen when they are in the lab … You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry," the Nobel laureate said, advocating single-sex labs as well.
In response to his anachronistic and chauvinistic comments, women scientists around the world took to Twitter to show how wrong he really was, using hashtags like #distractinglysexy and #TimHunt. Women in science are encouraged to add their own pics below!

The #distractinglysexy hashtag was born in response:

thanks god for feminism&social networks. Women can defend themselves from sexist idiots who ruled the science for centuries with their silly and hateful opinions about women just because women could not be heard. Thums up, girls

Yea, getting offended and posting passive-aggressive responses is really sticking it to him. No, wait...they're actually kinda proving his point.
Although I find these pictures funny, I do feel really sorry for the guy. He made a very ill judged tongue in cheek comment and now he's quit his job and faces constant ridicule and beratement. It's scary the fact that everything now can be reported on social media and used for someone's amusement, anger, agenda, etc.
Earlier it was "you reap what you you sow" but now it's "you reap not only what you sow and keep digging till you lie down in that hole". He should have been more careful with his choice of words, given that what he represents, an elite order of intellectuals.
The response shown here is as light hearted as can be given that women are denied careers and opportunities because of the mindset behind his 'ill judged tongue-in-cheek' comments. Words mean things and for someone of such high esteem, such an ill thought and ignorant statement should not be tolerated.
He didn't quit his job. He stepped down from an honorary position that had no salary or responsibilities. His remarks were made to a conference full of journalists and scientists. He had no illusion that his statements were private, and when he issued his non-apology he again reiterated that he meant what he said. The ridicule and beratement are well deserved, and we have a moral obligation to denounce his statements. How else will women and girls entering the profession know that they will be welcome in spite of this creep?
He didn't quit his job. He resigned an Honorary Professorship at UCL, a nominal post with no responsibilities or salary. He still has numerous other positions such as committee memberships for things, and he's still an emeritus professor at his final institution, which has become the Crick institute. He is in no way a victim in this.
@dihedrealprime, why are girls blanked out? Are you scared that they will out-science you?
If you read the BBC article here you will see that he told the BBC that he did mean the remarks but was really sorry. One wonders what exactly he was sorry for. (And someone buy that man a pair of nose clippers)
usually it's more 'sorry i got caught' than 'sorry i caused harm'

What, did you really expect him to take his opinion back just because some of you sensitive little g*rls went crying to your mommy (or in this case, made a fuss about it on twitter) over alleged sexism or whatever? Let me break it down to you: it - was - a - joke. It's a shame that he even apologised for it, there was NOTHING insulting in that comment. It's not his fault that the Tumblr-generation is full of oversensitive little babies.
Oh, you mean it's scary that people are held accountable for things they say or do?
I dont agree with you! Yes, Social Media gives a lot of voice to a lot of idiots, but when it comes to a case when another male is stereotyping us women AGAIN, he should be silenced & put in his place! This is a great response & great visibility for other men to see that women are very much capable of doing complex jobs, and not only cooking and cleaning.
"silenced & put in his place"? LOL! Is that how you deal with people expressing their thoughts? Everybody is entitled to their own opinions. You respond to them but you don't "silence" them. Btw, where is this "place" he should be, and where is yours?
Suggesting women and men should never work in the same environment together ( law of attraction applies everywhere ) or BE in the same environment due to their MUTUAL weaknesses is beyond backwards. He's not alone though I am sure and no reason e should CRY about the public response and REACT SO EMOTIONALLY by quitting his job. Boo hoo mate get over it!
LOL Nosehair knew that he wasn't having a private conversation in front of a roomful of journalists and still made an ass of himself. He was called out and now you feel bad for him?
Easy for him to now say he was "just joking" when it's hit the fan.
Obviously no one owns him....or they wouldn't let him out of the house with that nose hair. Seriously, you could plait it........
I noticed that also. Good thing he didn't have a cold.
hahaha so true
does this man really believe that any woman could fall in love with him with such nose hair and such mentality? not even a nobel prize gets over that, you poor thing...
What's not to fall in love with? This dude's sporting nose-spiders! Nose-spide...ad502d.png
What a Dickweed ...you go girls !
There's nothing more distracting and attractive than a woman duct taped in a Tyvek suit, full face mask, rubber gloves, and rubber boots. Oh how my heart aches from unrequited love as my warm salty tears run down to fill my own rubber boots.

This is awesome! And dude! Before you "claim" that someone may fall in love with you in the lab, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pluck that hair out of ur NOSE! It's too #distractinglysexy !
This is what makes intelligent women and men laugh out loud. So so funny
The god of wisdom in Greek mithology is actually a woman Athena. (Goddess of wisdom, knowledge in other mithology: Seshat in Egypt, Menvra in Etruscan, Sága, Vör, Snotra, Gefjon in Northern, Minerva in Roman. That means something.) So anyone who thinks women and science just can't be mentioned together, just wach over the list above. The old ones knew. - By the way, Mr. Hunt was right in one thing: I've found a LOT of sexy women up there.
this is pathetic. People just need to get over themselves. To make such a big deal out of what was quite a funny comment is stupid. Move on losers.
Laughing over sexist, racist, hateful jokes helps to keep those attitudes alive, and makes them look less serious or problematic. Just saying.
With those nose hairs I kind of doubt it!
One would think such a intelligent man would be able to realize he need to trim his ridiculously long nose hairs.
why cant u all be intellectuals and ignore what he says because it doesnt matter? why make a big deal out of 1 mans opinion, why does what he said have any effect on you?
Just remember...often the advancement of science and society requires the old guys to die off. Too bad that it's true, but it is.
He's narcissitic enough to think every woman would fall in love with him, frightened enough that tears scare him and out of control enough that he would fall "in love" with a co-worker based on her well-hidden genitals? Whoa....glad he's really smart or he'd be one hot mess.
I can promise you, his nose hairs are anything but sexy...
A Nobel prize winner, but someone that apparently doesn't have common sense.. Don't feel sorry for him, I think he gets a cool $1 million for the prize, but please someone cut the nose hairs, OMG...
Tim Hunt dedicated all his life for teaching and researching, but his importance for the world is less relevant than his poor joke on the point of view of the stupid leftist feminists (feminazis). And his joke was inside a context, that feminazis are not smart enough to understand. Meanwhile, muslins are stoning women, and the idiot leftists omit this fact.
That guy should trim his nose hair before suggesting that women in his lab would go anywhere near him.
It's about time sexist comments get called out. How dare he diminish these women.
Why keep this story up when it turns out that the journalist who "outed" him is a fraud and has been contradicted by attendees at the conference and one of the recordings made. And when it turns out that he has actually been working hard to promote and mentor women into the highest echelons of the scientific establishment for decades. it makes sense to be outraged at sexism, but shouldn't facts matter?
THIS IS GREAT!!!!!!!
Dear Tim Hunt, If you are reading this, I'm sorry. I should not have shared this page before I read the entirety of what you said. http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/after-sexist-scientist-complained-about-girls-in-labs-he-said-now-seriously-science-needs-women-report
Dear Tim Hunt, If you read this I'm sorry. After reading what I thought you said, I shared this page. What I should have done is waited until all the infrormation had come it before I responded. http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/after-sexist-scientist-complained-about-girls-in-labs-he-said-now-seriously-science-needs-women-report
I loved these photos and thought this was funny until I read that he has been fired. He was being tongue-in-cheek and doesn't deserve this.
yeah, they're hot... -Dr M (whom they also would not allow to return to the lab...)
This comment is not sexist. He shares his own experience with the woman. And I don't see exactly what is the problem. Something more, I'll add one more thing to his words - "...and all the time think that they are victim or are discriminated." After all, WOULD WE HAVE READ THIS ARTICLE IF A WOMAN HAD TOLD IT ? A piece of advice to the women, If you don't want to be discriminated, you should stop interpret someones words in such a way.
Well played, ladies, well played.
Still waiting for the sexy pics. in the meantime... as smart as he thinks he is, why cant he trim his nose hairs? Egads!
Still waiting for the sexy pics. WHERE are they???
That's pretty much the point. A woman in the lab, in their usual gear, is NOT striving to be 'distractingly sexy', they're trying to WORK.
I just master-bated 10 times, too sexy no wonder they havent cured cancer yet.
The only admissable reason for a scientist to be ejected from a labratory, is when they have sated their curiosity.
yeah, they're hot... -Dr. M (whom they also didn't let back into the lab)
I believe this man is either (a) delusional, or (b) bitter that none of the women ever actually fell for him. But now, I must leave, cry my woman's tears...
I think that man was delusional to think women fell in love with him, or bitter that they did not. But, I must go now, to cry my woman's tears...
I think Tim Hunt really showed his a**. I can't believe the lady below feels sorry for him. He obviously believes what he said on some level or it wouldn't have been uttered without a filter. How man of the scientists that helped him win that Nobel prize were female, the scientists beneath them, and lab suppliers and all the other support personnel. Give me a break. He deserved the ridicule. And to resign. And guess what? My largely female workplace is making YOUR cancer drugs. You're welcome. The men who work with us neither cry nor distract us. We WORK together for a cure. Yes, your oncology chemistry in our feminine, fragile female (kick a**) hands. It's amazing we can all tie our shoes in the morning.
He sure showed his ass.
I think we need to accept that this Nobel prize winner is our TYPICAL male scientist and as such clueless about women . Oops am I being sexist??
To be honest a reasoning in which #DistractinglySexy is the logical following to "You fall in love with them" is not so completely free from sexism.

You can't even make a stupid little joke these days, because some sensitive little f*ggot will SURELY get offended by it. I blame the estrogenic compounds in the water.
I wish i could hear the quote myself. However, it seems he really meant that labs should be unisex: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-33077107 The problem i have isn't with the fact that yeah, there can be sexual attraction in mixed-gender places, but that really the 'joke' could have been the exact same if he had said "and then they cry and when THEY criticize you, you cry as well". But his joke was really inducing that women were the problem.

We need to accept that this Nobel Prize winner is like ALL male scientists and as such CLUELESS about women. OOOOppps am I being sexist? ;)

I hate it when women scientists cite Marie Curie as an example of how brilliant and capable women are. The thing is, Marie Curie was probably the only woman in history who has ever contributed anything significant and worthy of a nobel prize! Tell me of any woman who did the same and I'll change my mind. Women, don't hitch-hike on Curie's bus- y'all look like sore losers.

Funny photos but I don't think it's a particularly good idea to post a picture of yourself handling animal tissue, for safety reasons. Also, no open shoes in the lab.
Did anyone ask if you thought it was a good idea? I don't see anything posted that is dangerous. And I'm sure those professionals thank you for your safety lesson.

Yea, I think it is quite stupid, to be honest. I don't think that he meant that those girls can't do their job, the point is that in mixed labs there is a higher chance of some kind of sexual tension between people, which can be a distraction. Of course, there may be gay men or women, but majority of people are straight, so keeping the labs one sexed could bring more concentration. They could be all female if you want, it doesn't matter! I just hate how people go over the top with sexism and so on.
okay, next time i should read the article first. still, I think he had in mind (and quite clearly stated) a tension between women and men which could occur, not dissing the abilities of women in science in any kind of way. overreacting at its best.
Not really. He's basically calling all women less professional, as well as implying that male scientists like myself cannot control themselves. That's generally misanthropic. And besides, I don't think there's been much of an overreaction. People have made some funny twitter photos and one institution that had him as an Honorary Professor have dropped him, like a company dropping a celebrity spokesperson.
You know, he may have been able to pull off that interpretation, if he hadn't included the 'bursts into tears at criticism' section.
Haha, I am happy you mentioned gay people. So what is left for them, the poor ones? They would either be in a mixed-sex environment where they would be distractingly sexy for the other sex so someone from the opposite sex would probably fall in love with them or the other scenario: being in a same-sex laboratory, they would be something as a hidden rat, finding collegues distractingly sexy. Conclusion: why just not forbid gay people to be scientists? For God's sake, is there another logical solution in this line of thoughts? Hopefully, you see how rotten this logic is.
No....just no!
