Woman On TikTok Calls Out Airbnb Tenant’s Entitlement When She Realizes That She Has To Do Chores Despite $125 Cleaning Fee
Airbnb was started by a couple of people who wanted to earn some money from letting people sleep in their living room on an air mattress. It slowly turned into a successful business of how easy it was to book a bed, a room or even an apartment, but first of all, because it was cheaper than staying at a hotel.
However, people started to notice that the prices of Airbnb properties have increased a lot through the years and now there is no difference in price between a hotel and an Airbnb. This was very evident for them when they saw a video on TikTok in which a woman pointed out a listing that charged $229 a night, had an additional cleaning fee of $125, but despite that, the guests were asked to do some chores before leaving.
More info: TikTok
It seems that Airbnb hosts aren’t afraid to ask guests to clean up before leaving while asking to pay a cleaning fee as well

The video was posted by TikTok user melworeit or Melissa from Canada and more than 400k people watched it. The woman wanted to rant about Airbnb hosts becoming too greedy and wanting too much from their guests. She thought this one particular owner’s request was too audacious.
The TikTok user was searching for a place to stay for a mini vacation with her husband at the end of February. While browsing, the woman stumbled upon a place that looked good enough for her and was priced at an amount she was willing to spend.
A woman was searching for a place to stay for a vacation and found something in her price range that she liked

It was a place that would cost $229 a night and it had a $125 cleaning fee. As mentioned, the price was fine and the cleaning fee wasn’t anything surprising as most places have it. But when looking through the description and additional information, the woman noticed that the host was asking “that guests complete a few checkout duties before departing to allow time to prepare the house safely and on time. Removing garbage, removing bed linens, starting the dishwasher and one load of laundry.”
It also had a $125 cleaning fee, which is standard practice and it didn’t bother her
The TikToker said she would have been fine with taking out the garbage and removing bed linens. But she thought that starting the dishwasher and a load of laundry was asking too much, especially when the guest would be paying a cleaning fee.
Melissa understands that it’s not that hard to start the washing machine and it wouldn’t take that much time but it’s the principle that is important here. If she pays for cleaning services, she won’t agree to clean up.

At the end, Melissa wrote a comment with an update that she booked a hotel and the video was there for raising a discussion. In a follow-up video, she explained why she would choose a hotel over an Airbnb.
She said she completely agreed with the comment by Orange Girl saying “Please just stop patroning Airbnb ppl… It just contributes to gentrification. Stay at hotels, support ppl in the area, eat local.” This time she was looking at Airbnbs because the place they were planning to go to didn’t have many hotels.
What bothered her was that the host was asking guests to do a few chores
Even though it wouldn’t have required a lot of effort or time, the woman wouldn’t have done it for the principle of it
The TikToker expressed her surprise to see the comments section so unified as the majority agreed that Airbnb prices and various fees have drastically gone up. Many people also shared the same opinion with Melissa that the host shouldn’t ask guests to do any chores and that it’s not her who is entitled but the owners of the Airbnb.
However, there were people who saw nothing wrong in that request and they believed that it helps out the cleaner and saves time as by the time they come, the dishwasher or the washing machine’s cycle is over. The woman guesses that the people who are on the other side are the hosts, so that’s why they disagree.
You can watch Melissa’s rant in the video below
@melworeit$700 for two nights ≠ no chores lol♬ original sound – Melissa
Do you think the host’s request was too ridiculous? Would you be willing to do some chores before checking out to help out the host even though you would pay them a cleaning fee? Let us know if you would be as outraged as Melissa or this wouldn’t have seemed like a big deal to you!
While the majority of the comments section agreed with the TikToker, there were people who tried to explain why the host would do this

Share on FacebookI think the take away point here is there is a cleaning fee... If you are paying for a cleaning fee then everything should be covered. If your not paying for one by all means asking for that stuff to be done is well with in reason.
I agree but tbh there's always a cleaning fee....lol and I could see prices going up to hide a cleaning fee if they offered none with chores. My husband and I don't do dirty stuff on their linens/towels or we would clean it up. We tie off the trash and we try to leave stuff as it was even with a special needs kid. But it's because it's nice. It should not be required. I definitely don't need to be expected to be a maid when I'm on vacation ffs. I think if they offered an actual good deal with an option for cleaning or you clean but then you're dealing with a mess of legalities if someone thinks not enough was done. I can't imagine staying at a hotel and being told to clean the linens etc 🤣🤣🤣 If the host/owner can't bother to put the work in (or pay a company to do so) I don't want to use their property. I want to trust they have a standard and they are concise...let alone the entitled lazy attitude. If you can afford to rent out a property you can afford the time/money cleaning it.
Load More Replies...I totally agree with her, fair enough to wash the dishes you've used and wipe down mess from surfaces, but asking me to do laundry etc is ridiculous when you're paying a large cleaning fee on top of a high nightly cost.
Amen. Can you imagine being at a hotel and being asked to do the laundr y and etc? 😂
Load More Replies...A reduction of cleaning fee should have been offered IF the renters did the requested chores! Hotels don't charge extra for maid service, right?
I've seen cleaning fees in hotels but many include it in the cost.. regardless it's expected when you're on vacation you don't do that. Respect the property but why should you have to be a maid on vacation? Also most hotels have turned down service which means that they actually clean your room for you every single day.... I think it does sound like an interesting idea to be able to negate a cleaning fee if you're the one who cleans but then there can be problems of if the owner thinks you didn't do a good enough job.
Load More Replies...Nah f**k that, don't charge a whole fee of cleaning and ask for half the s**t to be done. I know you are not spending 125 dollars worth of time and when I'm on vacation ALL my time is invaluable.
I (unfortunately) live next door to a short term rental, and can guarantee they don’t spend $125 worth of time cleaning. I’ve seen the owners in and out in less than ten minutes between renters, it’s gross.
Load More Replies...It's just like one person said: AirBnB had it's moment but has changed into a scheme where greedy people ruin neighborhoods, drive up rent and make housing in places that are often visited by tourists, unaffordable for people who actually have to live there because of their work. Dutch municipalities have the power to restrict the number of AirBnB locations and even to limit the days that a location can be rented out via Airbnb. In Amsterdam the limit is 30 days.
Unaffordable or simply unbearable. Tourists don’t understand that even vacation destinations have year round residents (who tf do they think work at all the business in the area?). People who have children, people who to get up early and go to work all day, and would just like to relax when they get home—-in their formerly residential neighborhood which is now full of loud, obnoxious, rude, entitled tourists—-the same people who would b***h a blue streak if the same happened in their own neighborhoods, btw. Yeah, can you tell I used to be a year round resident in a beach resort? For ten years. Man, did I look forward to the off-season. Moving away from all that to a non-tourist area has been like getting out of jail (I know it sounds like a dream to live at the beach, but believe me when I say its allure disappears very quickly when the first tourist season rolls around). I don’t have to dread summer or holidays anymore. It’s just as quiet on the 4th of July as it is on the 30th of July or the 30th of November, and I don’t have to fight tourist traffic either. Heaven.
Load More Replies...If they're actually paying the cleaner $125, that should cover enough hours to launder the linens for a two-bedroom property while doing the other cleaning. Sounds more like that cleaning fee is a revenue generator for them.
Exactly. Or they're getting ripped off by a cleaning company that throws bodies at each unit. Inefficient way of doing it. 1 person for longer to allow for laundry, dishes cycles. Rather than 2-3 or more people too fast. They miss more and waste time. If you have 2 people do a job you get about 1 and 1/2 people worth of work most times.
Load More Replies...I usually shop around and lately, I find that for a weekend, it's generally cheaper to stay in a modest hotel.
I've found this too. When air bnb was just starting out it was pretty good, fairly cheap etc. Now, hotels are much cheaper.
Load More Replies...I am a B&B operator and also have my place listed on Airbnb. First, I don’t charge a cleaning fee (because I AM the cleaner), but if I DID, I would NEVER ask guests to do any cleaning whatsoever! You are there on a holiday: the last thing you want is to clean up after yourselves! I want my guests feeling pampered and relaxed. If a cleaning fee is implemented, no one should have to clean up. Period! If they need sheets and towels to prep the room for another guest, have TWO sets of everything: BOOM! Problem solved.
Excellent response. Thank you for explaining what a real business person, "innkeeper", hotelier, or many other titles would do to run their business. It is a customer service business and a large portion of the service is the experience.
Load More Replies...I don't take the lines off the bed in a hotel and air B&B is selling itself as that so no. I pay you for the cleaning fee, I don't trash the place. You can get the laundry started while you clean the rest of the place. Not sure why people support you doing cleaning when they are charging huge cleaning fees. Honestly, just be happy I do pick up and don't trash places or smoke in the house or anything.
I strip the bed just so cleaning staff can't be lazy fvcks and pretend they changed it when they did nothing. I consider it a service to the next person who sleeps in that room.
Load More Replies...Agreeing with some of the comments, Airbnb used to be a cheap alternative to a hotel, now it's just as expensive and has created major issues for the long-term rental market. I'd rather go to a hotel anytime now.
dishes should be done and Dishwasher should be run IF the host provides the product. It can get smelly! Hotels don't usually have that option. I am a host and a guest. I don't want my guest to do the laundry. I want to be sure it is done correctly and sanitized. I have 2 sets of linens so I don't have to wait for laundry to complete. Common sense,. If they strip the bed great it's not a problem either way
Common sense amd good business sense. Thank you.
Load More Replies...Either / or but not both! What exactly do they do if a guest is disabled and unable to do things like drag the garbage out or strip bedding? That's why I am happy to pay the extra for the cleaning fee so it's not my responsibility. But the fees for cleaning are getting silly!
Exactly this! Part of the reason I have never used AirBnB. That and it's as difficult to find an accessible host there as it is to find an accessible place to live in general.
Load More Replies...125 dollars, thats 92 UK Pounds, thats taking the fecking piss so bad. look man, just because yhou all get robbed blind in Murica, doesnt mean its normal. used AirBnB plenty, never seen a cleaning fee above 20 to 40 Euros. ppl are also getting way too greedy. many places arent much cheaper than hotels
Actually, air bmbs in America are now only for the wealthy where I live. My parents looked into booking a weekend near me, but it was over 800 for two nights after they tacked on over $400 in extra fees.
Load More Replies...I agree with her. Removing garbage, doing the dishes and removing bed liners is something that could be done without even asking, i was taught to always do that (unless idk where to throw the garbage) even in hotels, but laundry? It's just weird... If it's time issue for the cleaner, just have two more sets of liners - you have a fresh ones to use and dirty ones can get cleaned later
Being polite is very different than being forced to subsidize their housekeeping budget
Load More Replies...The airbnb's I've used only ever ask that you strip the beds and put all "dirty" linens and towels in the tub. Load the dishwasher with all dirty dishes and just turn it on before you leave.
Which would be fine, if they didn't ask a cleaning fee that's half the cost for a single night on top of expecting that!
Load More Replies...I think the price plus a cleaning fee is way too high. I booked hotels every night of a two week road trip and didn't pay HALF that much. Ridiculous.
Our cleaning person takes about 4 hours to clean. We pay her well for a rural area @ $30/hr. It takes 4-5 hours to clean our 3 bedroom place that sleeps 6. We charge $100 cleaning fee regardless of how long it takes... it costs the same to clean regardless of whether they stay two nights or ten nights. Our house is priced below market and we pay about 3 times the typical wage in Northern VT. We provide our clients with everything including a fully stocked kitchen, high end coffee, all basic condiments and spices. It is cheaper to stay at our house than at a hotel. We've worked hard for our nice little home and we are not wealthy. There are some jerky Airbnb owners to be sure but some are quite decent.
Load More Replies..."Our cleaners are fast and don't want to sit there for multiple cycles" - Okay, but you're paying them to do the cleaning. You're not paying me to do the cleaning.
It is up to the cleaner to get the result with the resources available. As the customer of the cleaner I do not care how long it takes. I paid for a result. Exspecially at that price point. A vacation rental cleaning is much different than a regular residential cleaning in regards to time spent for the same space.
Load More Replies...If the worry was really about laundry speed the cleaners would bring clean linens and take the dirty ones away to be laundered elsewhere. I don't even like the idea that they're only using a standard household quick wash between guests either...
The cleaning fee is way too high, but I would want guests to do the dishes. Any adult can load and turn on a dishwasher & at the very least, the guests can collect all the towels, linens, whatever they dirtied & put them by the washer. I wouldn't want them to actually do them though.
I rented holiday homes. You had to do the dishes and put em back, clean it 'broom clean', wipe tables, put the bed linen away in one place and throw away your garbage and pay 65 if you didn't clean it all yourself, which is way too less.
Load More Replies...The rich ruin everything. They've ruined Airbnb. My husband and I built a tiny home for our daughter behind our home. We live in a state park on 7 acres which is heavily wooded she doesn't like to stay in it by herself. We thought about joining Airbnb but decided against it bc of how they now operate.
The rich couldn't ruin it if there weren't suckers ponying up the money. Consumers are as responsible for wrecking it as the property owners.
Load More Replies...Yes Airbnb fees have gone up significantly and now the prices are in line with many hotels. If the hotel and airbnb are the same prices, I would choose to stay at the hotel any day over the Airbnb. I WOULD NOT START NO DISHWASHER NOR LOAD ANY MACHINE UNLESS IT IS TO WASH MY OWN PERSONAL CLOTHING AND I AM DEFINITELY NOT REMOVING THE LINEN. I MIGHT TAKE OUT THE TRASH THOUGH DEPENDING ON HOW I FEEL ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY AND IF I DID IT WOULD BE A COURTESY SINCE I HAVE ALREADY PAID CLEANING FEES..THAT AIRBNB HOST IS ABSOLUTELY RUDEEEE. It is true, I have heard that Airbnb tend to take the side of the host instead of the guest (this should teach us that it is better and wiser and simple common sense to go with the traditional hotel since in their world, the guest is normally always right).
If they ask me to do this before I leave then they should discount some of the cleaning fee and send a refund. As Airbnb's started out being cheaper than a motel but now you can get a great room with the money you save by not having to pay a cleaning fee as cleaning is part of the nightly room fee.
This does seem silly to ask people to clean up if your charging an extra cleaning fee. Maybe they should just provide the cleaners with extra linens and towels for a trade out. No one wants to go on vacation and do chores. But, hey charge me less and I don't mind cleaning up after myself. Or just charge me a full amount and don't tell me you add extra for cleaning it. Ha save the problem all together. Hotels don't tell me how much they are adding to the room charge for cleaning.
We own a little place in VT, have all 5 star reviews and charge very fair and very reasonable (below market) rates as well as a lower than market cleaning fee. By asking the guests to strip the beds and just start the dishwasher (we don't ask them to start the laundry), we reduce the cleaning fee by about $25 and keep it under market. What we can't tell from the post is if the room rate is above or below market, which provides some context.
I was going to suggest this. Perfectly reasonably to ask that they start a load of laundry and dishes, just so the cleaner only has to finish up when they arrive. But take a little off the normal cleaning fee if the guest has to do some of it.
Load More Replies...Just bring “fresh linen” to the premises and replace it with the old….. do the laundry at home when it is convenient. Fast, Easy solution!!! Air BnB operators need a class in business lololo
$125 cleaning fee and you're expected to do your own cleaning? That host is out of their goddamn mind. You could get an amazing hotel room for $300 a night and you wouldn't have to clean it at all
I would like my linens to be properly washed by a person who knows what products to use and how to set a program and not by a random person who will never return there and doesn't give a damn if they do it properly.
Will never use Airbnb. Personally I think it should be banned. If building is zoned residential can't be used for a business. Want a business then pay for application to change dining and pay the rates accordingly.
Like we need more laws and regulations. I have a right to rent out my own property, thanks!
Load More Replies...How can they be sure that the previous guest does the laundry properly? I wouldn't want to use sheets and towels that weren't washed by a professional.
Recurring response is it makes it easier for the cleaners like what?, it’s their job! That’s like saying I should just ring myself up at the grocery store when the lines too long for the one cashier they have on hand. You do not inconvenience a paying guest to make someone’s job easier like she said it’s principal. Obviously you pick up after yourself or your just a pig but all that extra, just no!
You dont have self service checkouts at the grocery stores, fast food stores, libraries, etc where you are? Unfortunately, all sorts of companies will try to off load as much of the work to the customer as possible in order to reduce staffing costs.
Load More Replies...I never booked Airbnb becuase of this stupid cleaning fees. Hotels and motels way cheaper without any fees.
If I were asked to do that you'd better believe I will be EXTREMELY liberal with the amount of soap used. I'm talking nickelodeon levels of suds.
I clean my friend's air bnb when she is too busy, I think doing laundry is too much. You can take the trash out as you walk out the door, strip the bed as you leave, but laundry takes time. Starting a load wouldn't even be a big deal, but expecting them to hang out while running the laundry while also charging a cleaning fee seems a bit demanding.
Umm yeah, NO! I don't do that in a hotel and the hotel does NOT charge a separate cleaning fee. As the host, they should get off their lazy duff and deal with that themselves. Also, the realization that the previous "guests" had anything to do with washing the linens I'd be sleeping on or the towels I'd be using is a NON STARTER...
In Sweden, For that price I can get a suite with breakfast. No cleaning fee either.
Imagine your favorite food delivery app charging you for delivery fees. Then asking you to come to the restaurant to take away your food while still charging for the delivery. And then, some comments will be like: ''Yeah ofc, it's done so that they can deliver other customers faster. Duh!''
I told have stopped using AirBnb because of all this. While on vacation, I want to relax, not pay to do chores.
My neighbor is a middle class immigrant who works as a chef/cook in a budget hotel restaurant, where he’s been for 3 decades. In the 45 years he’s been here, he bought 14 rental properties along with his own home & his older parents’. Like many of us “natives” our families bought homes in the 60s/70s for under $100k and paid them off by the 80s. These homes now start at $1.5m and many have sold off due to property tax assessments. Not this guy. He ended up converting all 14 homes to AirBnB/VSCO rentals and given our location, fully books half a year out. With rent control, he’s now making 10-20 times more per property as vacation rentals and not move-in monthly rentals. Meanwhile, this contributes to pricing out all the genuine locals and creatives, creating a cesspool of tech bro hyper-indulgence. The tech industry killed our community; AirBnB definitely drove the nails into the coffin.
I actually agree with the patron. But here's the thing. If people are willing to pay it, then that's how it's going to be done.
I dont see how it is the guests problem that they didn't provide enough time between guest for a proper cleaning.
There should be zero cleaning fee if you're required to be their maid. That's what they are asking. If you stay at a hotel that's how it is and the cleaning fee is never as much as an Air B&B . I can't believe how many people think that's ok. I don't have endless time on vacation to do chores....I'd rather stay at a hotel at that point. It's already sketch staying at an AirB&B because it could be a much less safe environment, less accountability if the host doesn't clean the place, or if there's some weirdo (unless the place has good security in a decent area). I think it would be cool to have the option to negate the cleaning fee if you do their job by cleaning.********** I actually annoy my husband because as a nicety I will try to help out in little ways. We try to leave it exactly as we found it minus laundry and we the off the trash for them but unless it's extremely convinient the trash stays. We also don't use their linens/towels for "nasty" stuff so I don't feel bad not washing them ****** Honestly I think it's decent to pick up after yourself, put everything back exactly where it was etc but it shouldn't be required. It's nice. You're paying for a place to stay but that comes with service in the form of them cleaning up. Seeing people say you're saving the host time like it's a requirement or mean to not do it is what peeves me the most! They make BANK on these properties and are privledged enough to afford them in the first place. If they are too lazy/incapable of cleaning the property themselves or don't have a company hired to then they shouldn't be renting out an AirB&B PERIOD
I would not do any cleaning. That's why I pay a CLEANING FEE. That's like eating at Denny's leaving a tip and they tell you to wash your own dishes to make it easier for the person getting paid to work there. They want to charge 125.00 cleaning FEE ask you to do chores and pay someone 20.00 to actually do the actual work.
If Airbnb hosts want people to do laundry and dishes then they shouldn't charge a cleaning fee. Then people wouldn't feel so ripped of by paying a cleaning fee. If Airbnb hosts should charge a lesser fee of $50-$75 for a cleaning fee instead of $125. That way there people might be willing to do the chores more willingly to help the hosts out.
I am totally with her on this, and with the fact that Airbnb are getting too complacent. They only side with the hosts whenever there's a problem. We had a horrific experience at the end of last year with cockroaches in an Airbnb in the US. We ended up having to leave early because of the pests and didn't get anything back, losing over £2000. The review option was also mysteriously taken from us. I had photos and everything but Airbnb took the hosts side.
It's cheaper to get a hotel with full breakfast included and you don't have to do any chores. F**k that
Airbnb is not recognized by the BBB, and they have an F rating! My sister slipped in a tub with cleaning solution left behind in the tub, and there was no visible bath mat. It was tucked away in the closet outside the bathroom. She had to have her car towed back to FL. from St. Simon's Ga. She had two E.R. visits, pain and suffering, and a pile of medical bills. Airbnb refuses to compensate me for the rental, and the host denied my request.
I have never understood the cleaning fee. If I’m paying to stay somewhere, I expect the amount I am charged to include everything. One doesn’t check out and get billed for the towels needing to be washed, it’s part of the rate you pay to stay in the room. A cleaning fee is a way to pretend that the rate per night is cheaper than it really is, and then they slap you with another fee which should be part of the rate. It infuriates me and I refuse to stay anywhere that wants to charge me extra under the guise of ‘cleaning’.
If the cleaning fee is a flat amount regardless of the length of stay I would MUCH rather pay a lower per night rate and a cleaning fee particularly for a longer vacation. When I stay at a hotel I always request no daily cleaning (put out the little sign) but they dont take it off the room rate so I pay for something I dont use. For vacation rentals they already dont clean daily, just between guests so it is a much better deal to have a separate cleaning fee independent of the daily rate.
Load More Replies...129 for a cleaning fee. I am willing to pay the cause I know you have to clean. I won't leave the place a mess but what's the point of cleaning if your charging me to have to clean..... idc what alot of you say. Principal is right. I'm a single mom of 2 babies lol I clean enough as it is. If I'm getting away and paying you for that detail then do it. Take my money but let me relax.
Yeah I'm with her on this one and I do wash the dishes. Either they charge for cleaning or they don't. Since they did, I don't see how guests need to do anything.
One load of laundry with bleach "accidently" poured in it would stop that nonsense. Maybe the AirB&B should have doubles of all the towels and linens so the turn around isn't so hard. That said, I have started dishwashers per check-out instructions at rentals. But never with that high of a cleaning fee and never the washer.
While I agree that they are very minor chores, I also agree with the poster from tik tok. When I'm paying for a service I don't want to have to do extra stuff I wouldn't have to at a hotel. I think the smarter approach would be ask for a higher cleaning fee, but say that they could redeem a ln amount back if the CHOOSE to put the towels in the washer, and load the dishwasher. That way if i wanted to spend the whole evening enjoying myself but leave early for the airport it's my perogative and I've paid for the extra time needed for bedding, towels and dishes to be washed.
Yeah, sorry but no. I've never stayed in any air bnb where ive had to start the laundry before I left. Thats ridiculous, especially as that cleaning fee is so high! The cleaner, who gets paid, can put the dishwasher and the washing machine on as soon as they get done and then by the time they have cleaned the whole place , it will either be ready or they can relax until it is. Tidying up after yourself and actually cleaning are two different things.
My sister and I took my mom to a nice place for a few nights for her 70th birthday. And not until we arrived, was it mentioned (on a printout on the refrigerator) that they required us to do some housework on our vacation LOL! Now that I'm aware that many places ask this, I look for a cheaper cleaning fee (if any at all) or just get a hotel. It's definitely not right that (in our case) they sprung it on us and made it seem like there'd be a fee for leaving it "messy". I'm not staying anywhere that costs that much a night AND has that high of a cleaning fee but requires me to do any type of housework! Nope nope nope, lol. Plus, I'm not a messy person in general. All the cleaning staff have to do is start the load of laundry when they first get there. I promise, timing and prioritization are not difficult concepts LOL. Airbnb hosts are just taking advantage in my opinion, smh.
I agree. In my case i did the chores. But upon arrivail, my place wasnt ready she was still cleaning. Once she left i waa thinking...what did she really do.there was hair all ovee the whole house. Floor dusty as not being sweep in forever. Had to put a sheet on the furniture because so much hair. At that point, i didnt want to make waves. My first time booking myself. I wasnt aure if beinf honest would get me flagged.
Cleaning fees exist because $299 + a hidden $125 cleaning fee is more palatable than just paying $424 up front. Just like most of you think a 1.99 cheeseburger is better than a $2 one.
I am an airbnb cleaner, and I appreciate when the guest takes a little bit of time to start the dishwasher and a load of laundry, you know how much time I'd take when beds aren't stripped, dishwasher not started, a load of laundry not started.. and as an airbnb cleaner I have to finish cleaning the unit BEFORE the next guest arrives. There's been a few late check ins because some guests just don't care about what kind of pigsty they leave behind. I stand behind the cleaning fee. Doesn't take a guest much to take like 5 minutes to help the cleaner out.
Prospective from a vacation rental cleaning company. For a small place with 1 bathroom and 2 or 3 beds, the $125 would cover 2 cleaners for an hour and a half or so. This is time enough to wash and dry 1 load of laundry. Towels take a long time to dry and would take at least another hour after this. The extra time would cost roughly another $100. This is not only a waste of time for 2 cleaners to wait for things to dry, it would up your cleaning fee by $100. Is your lack of a couple minutes effort on your part worth paying another $100? Seems like a reasonable trade off to me. In my experience the full cleaning fee goes directly to cleaners. As a company paying staff and obsorbing overhead, the extra hour our cleaners could spend cleaning another property in invaluable!
If you have 2 sets of sheets per bed, there's no need for the cleaners to sit & wait for laundry cycles to finish. It is perfectly reasonable to charge a cleaning fee AND expect the renter to clean their own dishes & take out the trash. But not laundry. I would want to make sure sheets & towels are laundered to MY standard of clean, not that of random guests. & Cleaning services are only for normal cleaning duties. If they walk into a huge disgusting mess, dirty dishes, or worse, they will charge a lot more.
We ask for just £35 cleaning fee. Guests are asked to leave it as they found it, not strip beds but wash dishes only. We've had amazing guests and some serious slobs. It used to be free for dogs but now we charge £25 per dog per stay as the hair gets everywhere and We've had bedding ruined. It takes 2 people an extra hour plus to clean after dogs. We also provide a dog welcome box. People have to remember that Air take nearly 20% commission on everything including the cleaning fee. Costs are rising, heating, electric etc. So I'm afraid prices will go up to cover this. It's not because the owners are greedy.
From the "cleaning staff" side. 2 reasons for removing linens: #1 if you've left or lost anything, removing the bedding insures your odds of finding it rather than the cleaning staff. Ie unmentionables, jewelry, "action figures" . #2 Laundry is the first thing we start, so you do assist with time saving. Remember, Covid cleaning is more detailed and adds extra time disinfecting the entire living areas. Loading the dishwasher, your in a home away from home, so common courtesy but also time saving. This cleaners fee covers things like restocking supplies, detailing refrigerators, cleaning out the fire pit and cleaning the gas grill, sanitizing the hot tub. Not to mention, if a pet was there, dog hair and missed poop patrol. Just some 411 from this side of the fence!
The cost of the service is the prime factor in pricing. Since these "hosts" cannot effectively price their offering where does it end? Do we add a utility fee? How about a property tax fee? A furniture fee? For wear and tear on the furniture. The correct answer here is no. You price the offering correctly based on basic accounting concepts. You advertise the real rate instead of adding fees to lure people in with a lower rate initially. It is dishonest even if it is a common practice. It shows lack of ethics and lack of business mangement skills. Maybe a business fee to pay for a manager? They are expensive too. It is straight up entitlement on the part of the "host". And I use that term very loosely. They are a service provider or business. Someone giving them money is a customer, not a guest. The terms are a marketing.ploy. People prefer clean facades instead of messy reality. Apparently it is too confusing for everyone all around.
But a lot of people would rather have a separate cleaning fee and a lower daily rate especially with rentals that are only cleaned between groups. It costs me far less to book a place for a week and thrn pay the cleaning fee than it would to have that fee included in the daily rate becauae it would either need to be added to EVERY day to account for shorter rentals or have a different daily rate depending on the amount of time you are there which would be crazy confusing.
Load More Replies...They should be called out. Horrible customer service. Charge a rate that should include cleaning then add a cleaning fee. Some, few circustances I can see as reasonable. Not a standard Airbnb. Then, ask you to do a portion of the cleaning crews job that you paid for ( technically twice)? Yes, logistics are difficult. This is why not everyone can run a business much less a hotel. If you cannot figure.it out you should not be listing your property. Sounds like a bit of entitlement on the part of the "host". Call me a guest but in reality I am a customer no matter how you slice it. Guest soumds better in marketing because people like a fancy, clean facade rather than messy reality. I clean up after myself as a courtesy always regardless. Then, this "host" gets to claim you violated the requirements because you did not do the job you paid them to do. Affecting your ability to give others your business because of their unrealistic expectations. Screw that.
We have a Vrbo/Airbnb lake cottage, we ask guests to strip the bed linens on the beds that they use and place dirty towels in the tub. Our cleaning fee set at about half of a night's rental, our average rental is about 5 nights, but varies between 2 and 30 nights. We have found many guests do cleaning before they leave. I guess we just have great guests.
I personally clean quite a bit in a hotel or Airbnb. But it is something I do as a courtesy. I was in the hotel business and know how hard housekeeping is. I respect others property and care for something I rent, borrow, etc. I'm also hyper aware of the issues involved in leaving a "mess" in a rental. I do not leave a mess out of respect there is a difference between cleaning and housekeeping. But just like getting my date flowers, when you start expecting it, that takes the fun out of it and will stop. I'll take out the trash. Consolidate the linens and wash. Take out my own garbage. Etc... I'm an adult. But try demanding and requiring, we'll have a different conversation with a very different tone. I give or do for others because I choose to. If it is a contractual obligation, I committed and gave my word. It will be done. Try to force me and it is no longer an exchange. All I can say is you do not have enough luck to make it happen.
Load More Replies...Er, I've been airbnbing our place from pretty much the beginning, and these check-out procedures are not uncommon. But wait, before I'm attacked, know that "chores" have been standard in vacation rentals since, like, the 1950s. Rent a house at the beach and you'll be asked to do this stuff. The big difference is now that Airbnb has been taken over by Realtors and big tech they usually have the money to pay housekeeping for 4-6 hours versus 2-3. But, you know, if you don't want to clean up after yourself? Stay in a hotel!
You may be missing the reason people are upset. Why pay an inflated fee for a service amd then do part of the work yourself? Example, why pay $100 for $75 dollars of work then be required to do a third ($25) of the work? You paid $100 for $50 of service. Yes I roumded numbera to make the math simple but the concept applies. Traditional vacation rentals often had deposits that were refundable if you did the work. But they also were not normally as steep in comparison to the rental rate. There was a give a take as well as the owner or management company performing due diligence to ensure thw cleaning charge was fair rather than just passing an exorbitant cost straight through to the consumer.
Load More Replies...I stayed at an Air bnb on the Gold Coast in Queensland. I actually put the sheets and towels in for a wash n dry ( just had to be taken out as I was heading back to airport before the dryer finished ) so they would be clean and ready to use for next guest. I was on my own, so place was left super nice and tidy when I left. The irony is that my wonderful Air bnb people were really surprised that I did it and they actually send their linen out to be washed. I guess I saved them a job. I would've vacuumed and mopped floor but no vacuum or mop available. Used the brush n pan for carpet and floors and wiped floors with a wet cloth and cleaning product. Also wiped down kitchen area, bathroom, toilet, dusted and made sure 1 bd apartment looked as close to what it did when I came in.
If you book an apartment, house or room for your stay, it is common for the owner to ask the guests to collect all rubish, empty the waste bin, and wash the used dishes when they leave. For me and for many other people it is no problem at all. Of course without cleaning fee. But start a load wash laundry and ask for cleaning fee? They could even ask for it to be ironed😀 The question is. Don't they have spare towels and bed linen? For a cleaning fee of $125 they should have a cupboard full of towels and bed linens. If the minimum wage in the US is $14 an hour (due to google search - sorry if I'm wrong), the owner or cleaner would have to clean the room for almost 9 hours. For the cleaning fee of $125 they should not even ask to take out the garbage. Only if they say thank you and wish the guests a nice day.
Why I will never ever ever understand using airbnb over a hotel. The cost alone is outrageous. Hotels cost less and can even come with free breakfasts. No cleaning involved AND CHEAPER
Many dishwashers take over 2 hours to run the load. Washing 2 or 3 bed linens and towels can take several hours. Asking Guests to do these simple "chores' actually saves them money as it saves time and cleaners charge by the hour.
I've been a superhost for 4 years. I discourage guests from doing any washing. linens And if they do, I re-wash, as I don't know if they've done a good job. I can't take the chance with the next guest. Most guests wash the dishes by hand or machine, I don't encourage or discourage them. All I ask that they leave my place as they found it - neat and tidy. I charge a modest cleaning fee of $50.
Um so are we just going to ignore the fact that most AirBNBs have a hard 3:00pm check in time and a hard 11:00 am checkout time? When asked about a late checkout, they always say that it's so the cleaners can get the place ready for the next person. Well, you don't have to be a mathematician to know that means 4 hours to clean. More than enough time to run a dishwasher and do two loads of laundry..WHILE doing the other cleaning. Basically, of that $125 you pay for cleaning, I'm guessing $80 ($20/hr) goes to the cleaner and they're expected to do it in 3 hours or less. You doing dishes and laundry allows owners to make an additional profit from the niceness of the renters and the lack of better options for the cleaners. In short, I dont trash places I rent and I pick up after myself. Any additional cleaning is up to them.
I used AirBnB before there were added cleaning fees. I cleaned up after myself. Even vacuumed. It was a small place so it was easy, but I figured it was just common courtesy for getting an affordable, comfortable & private place to stay for a few months. Sad to hear it’s gotten so greedy.
My first thought is that most "cleaners" get paid $20-$25/hr so that would be 5-6 hours worth of cleaning at those rates. More than enough time to sit through the wash cycle of the dishwasher and washer as well as the dryer cycle. Even with a staff of 2, that is still 2 1/2-3 hours.... more than enough time to wait. My second thought is that knowing how some people are, I would like to be assured, as the next person checking in, that the dishes and laundry were done properly ie; the correct amounts of laundry detergent and dish washer detergent were used, if at all. Sadly, there are people out there that would run both machines without detergent just because they were forced to run the machines AND pay a cleaning fee. I feel that in order to secure the safety and cleaning standards, especially in times of Covid, the owners should either preform those tasks themselves or leave them to the paid professionals that they bring in.... not the previous occupants.
Definitely would rather stay in a hotel. I'm not washing linens on vacation. I'm just not. I'm taking a vacation to get AWAY from my laundry and housekeeping duties.
The cleaning fee is the cleaning BEFORE they arrive. Having that said, 125 certainly does seem high and it's not a huge ask to leave it to the cleaner. Also, crazy that someone make the argument of gentrification etc in that hotels would be better for locals rather than supporting local hosts. If you stay in New York Marriott it is not like your rent goes to a local. No doubt Airbnb have a much more positive influence on local economy than hotels.
Hotels are more costly usually or equal. The trade off is with Airbnb you're getting anb entire kitchen, privacy..so much more! I've tried stayed in cabins, homes over 10 years and they always ask to have your dishes done and laundry started, nothing new here. A hotel you get one small room and you're going to have to go spend more eating out each meal, or save at a home rental. Vegas hotels don't even give coffee pots anymore, or have microwaves etc. They have gotten more cheap, in my opinion. And, they dont do your dishes lol. Laundry is all sent to a huge laundry area with so many more staff members to get the job done. A home rental is a ton more work to clean and usually only a few people to do it. I love the privacy and space I get in a home rental. I'll clean up after myself.
Support a company that is ruining real estate affordability and win stupid prizes…
And jeez how much is it for a host to splash out on a 2nd set of linens that can be cleaned off-site instead of having to immediately turn around the same set? If they're charging an crazy huge cleaning fee that's exactly what the host should do - the cleaning. It's like if you we're charged for "breakfast" but you have to bring your own eggs and bread and juice - the host will provide the frying pan and the toaster.
From the minute I open my eyes in the morning until I fall asleep at night, I'm busy doing a million and one "little" things in my home like starting a load of laundry. None of these things, by themselves, require much effort but when you do so many, all day long, it's the last thing you want to do when you go stay somewhere.
The tiktoker is the entitled one here. She should be happy to help around the house as she isn't stuck sleeping in her car.
This host is f*****g a*****e and better to stay in a nice hotel and support them if it is the same price. I stayed one week in Oslo Norway where the international ski happens and the guy charge us for the nights plus took 600kr depositum for cleaning. He said if we clean his house then he will be transfering 600kr back to our account which he did bec we cleaned it. He told us to take out the bed sheet and he will wash them bec he wants to make sure the bed sheets and all are compeletely clean even i told him that i can start laundry etc but he said no. We only washed our dishes and cleaned surface after cooking and messing everyday, hahha. Amazing guy. Why should someone clean or start laundry or anythung when she has been paid ridiculouse price. Lolzz. I would rather stay in a nice large room in hotel if they will charge me same as airbnb. Welldone lady! for saying no to do anything when u have been paid. Stand up for whats wrong and unjustice.
I rented an apt, and it had a cleaning deposit...I cleaned it the day I c/o from top to bottom only leaving a load of laundry in the washer and clean dishes in the dishwasher bc we ran a load of dirty dishes...and the person that rent the apt refunded the deposit back to me.... I thought that was set up perfectly...but if their keeping it and having you do extra before checking out, thats a heck no for me you not getting free labor for something im paying you for.
If your charged that much for a cleaning fee then it should cover any cleaning needed. Unless your a extreme mess maker and should not be rented to. What’s so hard about starting the wash and then doing the cleaning, put the wash in the dryer and the next guest can take out of dryer or dishwasher and rest assured it got freshly clean before they arrived.
I agree 💯!! The whole point of Airbnb was to have an Home environment at a reasonable price. That's obviously changed. Also Fyi Why in The Hell do I need to pay a cleaning Fee if I'm Cleaning? Hotels you Pack up and Leave. Period. Miss me with the Bs!!
I'm managing air bnbs in New Orleans. I prefer guest leave the laundry for the cleaners to do. No mistake if it's clean or dirty then. Yes please ! Load the dishwasher...but start it too! And finally...yeah take out your trash. Nothing wrong with common courtesy and helping out where you obviously can. It's the little things. You are a guest of the owner. They are only suggestions. Never required duties. Be the best guest for the next guest
If you're asked to be part of the cleaning, then the fee should be less than comparable properties where you're not.
In the country where I live it is quite rare for hotels to have washing machines available for guests, so renting an apartment where you have free use of a clothes washing machine is a plus in itself and very useful for travelers. I have never stayed in an Airbnb in the United States, but have stayed in Airbnbs in several other countries, and generally the accommodation has offered more than a hotel would. The cleaning charge of $125 does seem excessive, but of course it would depend how many nights you stayed so that it would be rated on a per night basis.
Umm... Ok, I'd love to know if this person was able to find a "full service hotel" for the same price as the AirBnB because I SUPER doubt it. This practice is pretty common even BEFORE AirBnB. People keep comparing this to a hotel, but hotels have full staff where AirBnB folks USUALLY don't and the cleaning fee is often for a service to come by. My friend owns a rental cabin. There is a cleaning fee. There is also a request to start the laundry and to take out the trash on certain days if you are there. Being asking to wash all of the linens and towels we soiled and rubbed our bodies all over so the cleaning folks that come can dry them, put them up, and then clean the house... Yeah that actually IS a reasonable request, guys. The AirBnB was in the $200/night. I think the cleaning fee is reasonable considering comparison on price for full service.
We just stay at hotels. People get greedy with the misc fees. I get the time thing, but to charge the cleaning fee AND to expect the guest to clean is double dipping.
That is ridiculous. Imagine in these times of COVID-19 a guest who was unaware that he/she is positive agrees to these demands. Does their level best to leave the space in a great condition and does so. The host or cleaning company comes in and see everything looks good, do a few odds and ends and turns space over to a new guest. Both host and new guests are oblivious of the trail of virus' actually lying around the apartment. I have been doing AirBnB since 2019, and increased my stays with them since COVID-19 because I believe that the hotel staff were too taxed to clean properly. I don't want the previous guest cleaning my space. Why am I paying then.
Guest should not have to clean the dwelling, especially when they have paid a cleaning fee. One host tried to double dip on me with the cleaning fee. My cleaning fee if $95 was paid when I booked. The host tried to make me pay another $95 after my 1st week (long term stay). They entered my apt. On a daily basis, not to clean or do any such thing, but only God knows why. I refused to pay and told her we needed to talk, or perhaps I would have AirBnB intervene. I never saw her again. It became very cold in Odessa TX after that.
I have the same situation on my upcoming trip. they should disclose all of these before you booked not a week before the trip when is too late to cancel. Now I am stock with 150 cleaning fee and supposed to clean the house, do laundry and dishes before i check out.
If the cleaning crew has to stay to do laundry and dishes, the cleaning fee would be a lot more than $125. By doing a couple of easy, menial tasks, you keep the cleaning fees low. Take your pick. Also, just a side note why is it that all the whiny TikTokers have that stupid entitled look on their face in the video thumbnails?
I am on vacation I don’t care how small of a task it is you are charging me $125 cleaning fee so clean that’s what I paid you for whether it’s a big mess or a small mess you have been paid for the services and that’s the way it should be yes you can have somewhat of a courtesy if that’s what you want to do but you’re not obligated because you’re paying for the services so my conscience is clean now how about you charge me $125 if I didn’t clean the place correctly and if I did I shouldn’t be charge 125 it goes both ways you can’t have your cake and eat it too things are expensive and people work hard for the money to just give it away to someone who just wants to walk inside of a house and do a walk-through for $125 I don’t think so
Honestly, its just the principle of it. If your paying a cleaning fee, but are still required to assist with cleaning, then what is the point??! I mean, I clean up after myself when staying in an airbnb or a hotel. I put everything back the best I can, and the most is pile all the used linens in one place. The cleaning crew should be able to take it from there. If it only takes me a short amount of time to do the laundry, then it should only take the cleaners who are being paid to clean, the same amount of time.
As a host, I am most burdened by Airbbs treatment of its users. They have tacked on so many fees, I don't feel right charging that much and have accepted less percentage because a place is worth what it's worth and airbb is taking too big of a cut. I plan to stop hosting for airbb. I am looking for alternatives and considering implementing my I own booking to save my guests money.
I owned and Rented out a beautiful house in Costa Rica. It's nice to have back to back rentals, however one can not expect others to prepare the resident for the next renter. The renter should be willing to pay their caretakers to be able to accommodate the next client and to allow appropriate time for the necessary chores to be completed. I would not expect a client to prepare the resident for incoming clients. The cleaning fees as far as im concern is a rip off. It goes with our saying that most people will respectfully keep the resident clean but doing laundry and charging a cleaning fee on top is just a money grab. People are just getting more greedy. As for booking a hotel would you accept paying a cleaning fee and do the bedding and towels during your stay, hell no!!
The cleaning fees have gotten ridiculous and this is why...it used to be private owners renting their property or on their property and they would clean it when you departed. Now it is large companies who have bought properties to exclusively rent as a bnb. They removed the element that made it bnb and it has gone corporate and now it sucks. There is nothing personal about it you are now a customer not a guest. You can still find a reasonable bnb with low or no cleaning fee if you book ahead and search deep because the private owners still exist they are just drowned out by the corporations. And guess what people it is only going to get worse. Somebody needs to create a new site exclusive private owners.
I mean a whole house rental vrs a 1 bed king room hotel? One you pay a cleaning fee and "start" a cycle for a full house the other yiu have shitty water pressure, couples arguing or screwing down the halls, the wonderful fun parking of hotels! Lmao, do we all forget that airbnb stays are waaaay more than just a suite or a queen bed?! The cleaning of a whole home has to come in to account here?! I'm not a host but I'll totally keep booking my airbnbs over a hotel start the laundry and do my dishes (which I think I've done at every stay which is typically over $150 a night.) Versus staying in a typical hotel with basic TV amenities and the wonderful ice makers lol. Thank you airbnb hosts I'm at least on person who appreciates you & will still pay the cleaning fees because I understand an entire HOME is not a hotel ROOM. 😂
I do housecleaning at an Airbnb and the checkout list is purely there to make things a little quicker for the cleaner. I usually end up doing three or four loads of laundry which takes forever to wait for and I only have a small window of time that I can be there before the next guest comes. Starting a load of laundry and dishes just takes a few minutes but makes a huge difference for the cleaner, I don't think it's entitled at all. However some people make barely any mess, so I think it would be good to make a system on Airbnb where people get evaluated on their cleanliness and don't have to pay as much for cleaning costs... just my opinion
I feel that is the most fair post yet. Sadly though, you know as well as I do that many of the the more greedy owners will justify charging the full amount even when the previous renters did all the work.
Load More Replies...Full Stop. Are these the only freaking towels and sheets in the world? The host should have at least one or two extras in rotation. You shouldn't have to sleep on the same sheets as the guest the day before, without a chance for them to be cleaned off-site and aired out.
The cleaners job is to clean..PERIOD! There is a cleaning fee.. This is for cleaning. No one should be cleaning anything. Air b n b hosts should be embarrassed and ashamed to even think someone should do this! Even garbage ...sorry (not sorry) but the price paid for the room itself should include the removal of garbage. Air b n b site should be monitoring these hosts and when they put ridiculous things like this they should be removed. It's sad people actually think they should have a person pay them then do half the work upon leaving. Entitlement for sure. Bad hosts like this make a bad name for air b n b. I'd stay in a hotel or Inn over air b n b anyway. Most people don't leave a mess. I wash my dishes but no way I'd ever take my garbage out or do laundry.
I understand this ladys point, but being a cleaning lady myself... the problem is you can't compare these individual homes to big hotels. The reason these few small things are of asked of the tenants staying is because the amount of time. There's not multiple washer and dryers and sometimes there's as little as 4 hours to flip these air bnbs. There are very inconsiderate people out there and if you leave 7 loads of laundry and piles of dirty dishes. Sometimes this all cant get done before the next people check in. Everyone on here keeps comparing this to hotels? Hotels offer room service during the middle of your stay most the time and sheet changes. There's no one offering that when you stay at a house. Also we're living in a time especially in Florids where rentals are on the rise and finding a good cleaning lady let alone a clenaing lady at all is tough. So my take on this would he change your perspective and understand, or don't and find another Rental.
If you can get a hotel room for a similar total price and not have to do chores.... What exactly is the advantage of Air BnB?
I used to clean homes that people lived in regularly, rarely was I paid 125$ for cleaning the entire home. It would be more like close to 100$ if their house was really bad, to 60-755$ if their house was pretty clean to begin with. If they're charging me 125$ for cleaning fee because they have cleaners come, I'm not cleaning. If you wanna decrease the cleaning fee I'll gladly do those things. I can pay the same price at a hotel and receive amenities and also not clean at all.. I mean come on. People are spending their hard earned money, if you want to help the cleaners you hired, then you can help them, I'm not gonna pay you to have me clean something I wouldn't have to elsewhere for the same price. I can't justify paying for cleaning and then cleaning as well, when I know cleaning companies aren't charging 125$ to clean an already clean home. If you are hiring a company that charges that much then you haven't done enough research on cleaning companies and are paying way more than you
Having been a cleaner of vacation homes, I would like to point out that what the guest is being asked to do, while seemingly chorelike, have little to do with the scrubbing, mopping, dusting, especially decorative items and light fixtures, vacuum cleaning, glass, window and mirror cleaning, closet airing and cleaning that are hard work a Cleaning fee covers. Asking the guest to do tose small short time "chores" probably brings the number of hours down, and a more lower cost. The cleaners fee also covers the equipment and cleaning products, and liability insurance for the owners to hire cleaners. The cleaning cost seems to allow enough time for the cleaner to make sure the unit is ready for new guests. I do think if these tasks are too much for you, by all means, stay in a hotel or motel. The host of the bnb is giving you a simulation of being "at home" in a lovely place. You might appreciate that first. It is not so difficult to do these things, and you would do them at home anyway.
my bf owns and rents out a vacation home on a rental site. He doesn't charge a cleaning fee unless the renters are absolute pigs. But he does ask people to remember there is a cleaner and to leave her a little something. She does all the cleaning including the laundry. Except when I stay there. Then I clean that place top to bottom to save my bf some cash.
I rented a place at a fair price. Was asked to pile up used sheets and towels, and wash dishes used. No cleaning fee. I was perfectly OK with all that. I wouldn't want to pay a fee AND do part of the cleaning. One or the other, not both.
I have stayed at numerous airbnb's and yeah they usually want you to leave the place pretty clean. I don't mind tidying but you pay a cleaning fee. They can strip the beds and take the trash out. I won't leave the place a mess. My dishes are in the dishwasher and sinks and counters and wiped down but that cleaning fee makes airbnb pricey. Someone has a job they get paid for and I have a vacation to enjoy.
I am an Airbnb host. I currently charge a small cleaning fee of $50. no matter how long the stay and I do not provide a check out chores list… However, each host sets their own standards and rules, which are provided in the listing, and guests are required to read and agree to before booking. There is no reason or cause for ranting about this. If you’re not comfortable with the rules and checkout instructions in one listing, you’re welcome to continue shopping until you find a listing with house rules and checkout instructions you’d be comfortable with. To your benefit, the host cannot require guest obligations above what you agreed to upon booking. It’s up to you to read the house rules and checkout instructions before booking and move on if you’re not happy with what you see.
The difference is you’re staying at their personal property. When my grown children come and stay with us they clean the trash, help with dishes , wash towels And pull the linens off the bed. It’s a very respectful thing to do.
I used to have an Airbnb listing. It was a very cute apartment with a full kitchen, $1,500 mattress, office, access to a pool and tennis courts, etc.). I offered it for about the price of a Super 8 motel room. Instead of being grateful, my first guest trashed it. I spent the full 3 hours between guests cleaning but did not clean under couch cushions or in the deeper layers of the stove. The next guest dismantled my couch and stove and found a few crumbs in there. She also planted a hair. She contacted Airbnb and they refunded her the entire stay. Keep in mind that deep cleaning between each guest would cost well over $500 if I hired cleaners to do it. People wonder why they can't find affordable housing. Ungrateful guests like these are why. After those two guests I removed the listing from Airbnb and will never host again.
As a former Airbnb host I can say I had to raise my cleaning fees because people were leaving the place filthy and if I didn't deep clean after every guest (clean under cushions, in the stove, the entire interior of the refrigerator, etc.) some guests would complain and get a full refund. Keep in mind that if I hired a cleaning company to deep clean like that they would charge over $500. Also, with hotels you usually don't get kitchens, nice furniture and tasteful decor, etc. I mean have you seen a Hilton lately? Yuck. I ultimately removed my listing from Airbnb (which was very nice with a full kitchen and access to pool and tennis courts and priced at about the cost of a Super 8) because of ungrateful guests like her. And people then wonder why they can't find affordable housing. Ugh.
As an airbnb property manager, I can assure you that this has nothing to do with entitlement. The cleaning fee is used to prepare the house for guests arrival. The cleaning service WILL NOT wash sinks full of dishes, take out bags and bags of trash, pick up garbage stewn all over the house, not once but twice (before and after) guests arrivals, all for the $125 fee that you think is excessive. . This is something that the hosts have to do prior to the cleaning crew show up. You are working on the assumption that guests keep these houses generally clean. I can assure you that this is incorrect.
Doing the dishes and laundry aren't much of a problem. Don't charge the cleaning fee then if the guest is required to clean for the host. If wanting everything to be ready timely for the next guest? Do better time management on check in check out time as a host instead of charging guest on a service that is paid yet not served. Have back up set of dishes, towels, and such between guests.
I cleaned these rentals. It's 40 an hr per person that cleans. If you pay 120..you get 3 cleaners for an hr...I understand what you are saying , I also know they ask you do it. Many don't. I get hrs eating on laundry...makes zero difference. If you don't pay it. Someone else will. Just a fact. I clean on Anna Maria Island Florida. So folks do need a dad give a s**t though 😁
We started the dishwasher, and took out trash, clean up and left it just as we found it. Never thought about stripping bed. Anyway my biggest complaint is the price increase. Bottom line is I chose a hotel first, The AirB&B is a last option.
Stayed in an AirBnB in Detroit area rated 5 stars. After getting in, turning on lights, opening blinds, saw an eighth to a quarter inch of dust on everything. The walls hadn't been painted in 20 yes or more. The ductwork wasn't connected to the furnace plenum. And, the owner tried to sell us not just life insurance, but financial advice!🤣😂
I am a housekeeper for AirBnB and VRBO hosts. It's difficult to explain in one comment what I've seen and experienced. The cleaners never know what condition the homeswill be left in. Let your imagination run wild and you may come close. Granted most people are respectful and responsible but MANY OTHERS leave the places trashed just because the paid a "cleaning fee"! I have had a cabin charred buy a grill fire, many times hot tubs will be left green or yellow and/or oily, filters will have a film of who knows what on them, sadly I'm not joking!! Trash is sometimes left all over the house, I could go on and on.. But the point is yes you pay a cleaning fee but that should be reasonable normal cleaning for the housekeeper. And the reason that they ask you to start the dishwasher and a load of laundry is because the homeowners are wanting to rent the cabin as much as possible so they have new people coming in the very same day. So with all those above things mentioned, I appreciate good guests
Cleaning fee is to clean the apartment, not do YOUR dishes. Lazy ass people.
This explains the dirty dishes that welcomed me at my last Airbnb stay and I had to wash them before before I could eat after driving 4 hours to get there. With that steep of a cleaning fee I shouldn't have to do more than tidy up.
A cleaning fee of $125 should not require anything. That is 4 hours at the going rate where I live of cleaning. I think the cleaning fee is bs. Should be allowed to see the receipts for it.
People who use AirBB are not GUESTS - they are PAYING CUSTOMERS. Expecting customers to both pay a cleaning fee AND clean = expecting customers to pay to clean. Ef that. I could see posting a notice that the cleaning crew would really appreciate it if customers would pop the towels in the wash before leaving but state that it is not mandatory since mgt. acknowledges that customers are already being bilked a huge cleaning fee.
We stay at a very small place - it's NOT an Air bnb. There's just one person on the cleaning staff, and she does all 15 units. So we're asked to please start the dishwasher and strip the beds, and pile it and towels near the door. Not asked to wash. If we don't do this, THEN there's a cleaning fee. Otherwise they just want to give the cleaner a head start . Only fair. But we're never charged Happy to help her - she's very nice. We run the dishwasher and put everything away. Great place.
I ask that as a courtesy not a requirement. My cleaners don't report back to me whether it's done or not. It's not a big deal. They have alot to do in a full house and so it just saves time if it's a same day turnaround. People have no problem about wanting to check in early but then complain about taking a couple minutes to load laundry or start a dishwasher. They think a magic fairy does it and think they can check in at 11. There is give and take. Don't do it, it's not a problem but don't ask for courtesies the other way. Wow.
CONTINUED... And each of these requests are for good reason and to actually keep cleaning costs Owners incur lower so they do not have to raise the price for the cleaning fee. We as Hosts offer these additional cleaning services as an add-on if particular guests desire that kind of experience but it is an extra cost. Overall... a properties rules are listed and acknowledged before every confirmed booking. If a short-term rental is not for you then don't Book it... Book a hotel. But some people actually appreciate the "option" to be able to rent out a 4 Bed/3 Bath home where their entire group can be together and have their privacy vs renting a hotel or resort location. The like the fact that they can have their own pool and firepit to enjoy and create memories. If it's not for you then it's not for you. But let's not get into saying boycot Short-term vacation rentals because what's not for you may be just what someone else is needing. Stay positive and kind🤍
As a Super Host Property Manager/Realtor, I truly believe a lot of individuals would be more understanding to simple tasks asked of them if they knew everything that went into the process of a property Turnover for short-term rentals and the cost of cleanings Owners incur to provide their homes to individuals interested. Just like not everyone is always kind/understanding to the waiters/waitresses/service staff but may have a different perspective if they have ever been one. Guests do not tend to think of... Mortgage, Utilities, Insurance, Repairs, and overall time and employment of staff it takes to run a successful Short-term Rental. First understand... not every property is created equal or has the same rules/Responsibilities. And there may be some who are taking advantage vs truly valuing guests and providing them the best experience. Our properties do ask that dishes be washed and put back, trash is bagged and linens are stripped off the beds used.
I agree. If you are charged a cleaning fee, you shouldn't have to clean. That's like going out to eat and paying for your meal but having to clean your table and load your dirty dishes into the dishwasher. I leave a generous tip so I don't have to worry about doing any of it... I think it would be reasonable if guests were able to choose. The rate is this much, but if you do these things the following charge will be deducted (obviously a fair duscounted price would be provided, and the guest could make the decision, the host would make up for the cleaning by charging the fee. Having a cleaning fee and making a guest do chores is redundant.
Really! When I stay in a hotel I always clean up behind myself but I'm not stripping the bed down or collecting up the dirty linen and I don't pay a Cleaning fee. Airbnb's cost more and charge a cleaning fee so why would I go out of my way to do more? The whole point of a vacation is to get away from everyday chores to relax and be lazy..
If the cleaning fee was discounted I would be ok with this option or to do none of it and continue to pay the full cleaning fee
Interesting. I know fees are high and many air b and bs is no longer reasonable.I stay at hotels now specifically because tbe cleaning fees etc haven't gotten to high. I always leave a place clean, but what if you turned on a washer wrong and flooded the place?. I'm not operating their appliance's then leave them running.
If guests don’t want to do a few things then check out and check in times will have to change to accommodate the dishwasher/ laundry times. Many hotels don’t have kitchenettes so the dishwasher is not an issue. But usually costs more money to eat out especially if you have a family to feed. Most AirB&B hosts are not asking one to do major chores, just commence things that take time for the cycle to complete. On a personal note, we have had excellent experiences staying at many AirB&B and find it more private, cheaper and more enjoyable than hotels.
With Enhanced cleaning performed because of Covid it is understandable why guest should do everything in their power to return the place as they found it
Speaking as a host, our cleaning fee does not cover what we are charged by the cleaning company. And we still have to swap out quilts and blankets to wash those at home because there just isn't time for the Airbnb's washer/dryer to run everything. I'm not saying every Airbnb host operates with the same high cleanliness standards, but be careful not to attribute a request to start laundry as ridiculous or greedy. It's an attempt to minimize the cleaner's time waiting on the dryer at the end of the day. (Time they continue charging for, often beyond the cleaning fee you give the host) To those that think it should be baked into the nightly rate, that's good in theory, but here's one reason it doesn't work well. If you raise your nightly rates by (20% for example) and remove the cleaning fee, then guests may not even look at your listing. They think you are 20% more expensive than other Airbnbs in the vicinity even though you'd have less fees at checkout.
I used to do customer service for AirBNB... Which is why I refuse to stay at an AirBNB. The customers are hit with all kinds of fees at the request of owners... And the customer is never ever right. I also never understood why there was a cleaning fee and you were required to clean yourself. This is the case with most hosts. One woman left an apple and the host not only collected the cleaning fee but also fined them for leaving the apple. Crazy
Taking out the trash or such yes. Laundry no. Not everyone does it the same and I could see where the host would then try to charge for damages or such. If the cleaners are that fast they can either come back or a professional laundry service could be used.
I think writing the request is fine. It was a request not an order. The guest is not obligated to do any of the chores. There would be a huge problem if they charged a penalty for not performing the request.
I always clean up no matter what but the fact that they actually ask you for this is what is very annoying because of the fact that there is a fee and sometimes it’s a $400 cleaning fee. I have no problem with cleaning before leaving because that’s just what I do but when it’s asked of me that’s when it’s annoying. Idk.
How about when staying at an Airbnb in Big Bear they ask you to physically take your trash with you. Haha
I'm going to take an unpopular opinion here. Stop comparing STRs with hotels, that's like comparing beer and wine. Yes, they both have alcohol, but they cater to different tastes. Secondly, Airbnb is a site to advertise a room or home of yours to complete strangers. The costs, check-in and checkout instructions are transparent. If a host wants to charge a cleaning fee with extra checkout duties, you pay and do it. When you book a place, you basically sign a contract to abide by the hosts rules. If you dislike it, you can leave a review or respectfuly give the host constructive feedback. I'm not saying having guests do chores is right or wrong, what I'm saying is that you have to respect the hosts rules. Although complaining about doing a few things before checkout that takes 10/20 minutes, is the definition of entitlement and 1st world problems. If you don't like the short term rental model, then don't stay in one.
This is so ridiculous... they should offer the guest the choice of 125 fee if they choose not to clean. But if they want to save 125 tell them they need to take out trash , use the dishwasher and load the washer with the towels and remove your linen. People are so ridiculous... JUST STAY AT A HOTEL MOTEL AND EAT LOCAL.
I am an Airbnb cleaner, I've done only bnb turnovers for a little more than a year for a wide variety of hosts. First things I want to clarify is- we don't receive all of that cleaning fee. Part of it is used for cleaning supplies, replacing damaged linens, and/or the toiletries provided to the guests. So if you're paying $125 for cleaning fees, we are paid $85-100 of that, depending on the hosts. Second, personally, I prefer you not to strip the beds- i especially don't like having to get the linens out of the bathtubs. I need to make sure all the linens are washed (occasionally spot treated) and sanitized correctly, so feel free to leave them hanging up, I got it. I do, however, greatly appreciate a guest that will load up the dishwasher and start it before they leave- most hotels don't have full service kitchens, and believe me when I say, there is a lot of work to be done to clean and sanitize a space between guests without having to do a bunch of dirty dishes or wait on the machin
My stepmom has an airbnb that I clean. Guests check out by 11am and check in at 4pm the same day. That's 5 hrs to do a deep clean of the entire house, change all the towels and bedsheets, and do about 3 or 4 loads of laundry. It's not like we change sheets and call it a day; I'd argue that we clean MORE than hotels do since they typically only have like 30 min per room. I'm one person but I deep clean everything in the house, especially with covid going on. Laundry alone takes HOURS to do, so asking someone to throw in a load before they leave would be such a massive help, and honestly doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me (I'd do it, no problem), especially since everytime I've cleaned, the guests have put all the dirty stuff in a pile somewhere anyway. Sometimes it's in the bathroom, its fairly often right in front of the washer. At that point, why not just throw it in and start it up? As for the dishes just put them in the dishwasher instead of the sink as you're done with them
I think it's ridiculous to add a 125$ cleaning fee, and expect the guest to do any cleaning ( Not saying that is grounds to be a slob). The cleaning fee is variable. I have paid anywhere from 35 to 100 for a cleaning fee. And I spent 4 years in airbnb traveling for work. A hotel doesn't charge a cleaning fee and they will smile and ask you to come again even if the room is a disaster. If your going to charge a max cleaning fee, then don't expect your guests to clean up after themselves. Charge a minimum cleaning fee, state it in the description . Then tell your guests what are expected of them
You are paying for a cleaning fee hence the description. I am a neat and clean person so I do t leave a mess for anyone anyway. It is not my responsibility to save the owner or cleaning person time for the next guest. You have a business and this is your problem. Besides the outrageous cleaning fees , some of the other fees such as administration fees or whatever they want to call them are astronomical. They advertise a place for example at $150 a night then after cleaning and fees you are paying over 300 or $400 a night. I have literally seen the price double or triple. For this I can stay at a really nice hotel with maid service,
I can see why guest would feel put off by paying for cleaning and then be asked to do some simple things like trash removal. . However even with these task request there is still so much to do when guest leave. We walk into the cabin and it looks fairly clean. There is still around a two hour process to make beds, wipe down EVERYTHING in kitchen, clean bathroom, sweep, mop, etc. The trash taken out just keeps the smell fresher, sometimes there can be hours or longer till the cleaning is done. We personally spend 30 to 45 minutes just getting the hot tub ready when it has lost alot of water.Change the filters, run the cleaning cycle multiple times. We remove all used laundry bedding, blankets., Remove all the trash from rental. Then the cleaning crew comes and spends up to two hours ... That's after the helpful task are done by guest. I have had guest start laundry and I appreciate it but I prefer to just remove it and take home, I have up to 6 to 8 loads which takes a day or all night
Also, knowing that most of you that have left comments about the airbnb owners asking you to pick up after yourself, by putting your dirty dishes 8n the dishwasher and turning it on, taking out the trash that was from your stay, and removing the bedding that you slept and starting laundry, THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK IS CLEANING??!!?? THAT'S NOT WHAT I CONSIDER CLEANING IS, you are only picking up your mess!! (As you should! do anyway!) And to the person who thought that staying in a hotel means things are washed correctly... WOW, you are seriously nieve and sadly mistaken, but, thanks for the laugh!! I can guarantee you, that I WOULD NEVER STAY AT ANY OF YOUR HOUSES, BECAUSE, WE HAVE A DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION ON WHAT THE WORD ""CLEAN! "" IS/MEANS AND IT'S MORE THAN PICKING UP AFTER YOURSELF! YIKES, I guess none of you change your sheets/bedding except once in a great while or after you've spilled something on it??
Just wondering if you possibly thought about why they ask you to pay a cleaning fee and expect you to CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES??!! Personally, I'm having a problem with the "lack of RESPECT" and how rude you are, by NOT CLEANING UP AFTER YOURSELVES!! My sister's and I were brought up to pick up after ourselves no matter where we were at, and to make sure that we didn't leave dirty dishes, dirty clothes or leave trash behind, because, THAT would be extremely disrespectful and very rude since someone allowed us to stay in their home. The fee is because they outsource the deep cleaning (toilets, showers, tubs, refrigerator... etc). and that's really a cheaper hourly rate than what I charge for deep cleaning!! It really bothers me, when a person leaves their empty cup, or trash laying around my house or in my car, you brought it with you, then it should leave with you or you should throw it away!!
Has anyone here actually ever hired a cleaning service? You literally have to clean up your home to prepare for the cleaners to come. They're doing sanitization - vacuuming, wiping counters, mopping, dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, etc.. THAT is what the cleaning fee covers. Cleaning up after yourself is so basic, the "principle" is to do the bare minimum so the actual cleaners can do their job so the house is actually clean for the next guest! I'm not even a host but I have seen what it takes to clean/pickup/organize a house before the professional cleaners arrive to do their job!
I actually do work at a hotel and I couldn't ever imagine a situation where we would ask a guest to clean their own linens or even strip the beds - that service is INCLUDED in the price for renting the room so there's not even a separate fee for it. There are times when a guest does leave behind an extraordinary mess and we're forced to add on an extra cleaning fee but those instances are exceedingly rare. Charging $125 for a cleaning fee then asking the guest to do half of the housekeeping themselves is outrageous. For the record, the average nightly rate at my hotel is $125 (plus tax) and that includes full housekeeping service and breakfast... and we're one of the cheaper options in the area.
I own a cleaning business and yes I sure do have a check list for the renters to do before they leave.. I'm not a maid service I'm a cleaning service. We ask this because most check outs days there are same days check ins also and some ppl like to use every towel, every piece of silverware/dishes and cups. This helps us cleaners VERY much and we are very grateful for the renters to do so. Some ppl trash the place and leave the place a mess which is not fair to the cleaners. Again we are not maids to pick up after you we are cleaners. Putting in 1 load of laundry for us is the biggest help. It might not seem that big to you but it is to use especially when you have sometimes up to 6 loads of laundry and have to clean the whole house and make all the beds. So yes every little thing that a renter can do to help us out is very much appreciated.
I own more than1 vacation rental and use airbnb platform. I agree with the poster. If you're requiring a cleaning fee you shouldn't be asking for you guests to do your laundry. We ask our guest the night before that if they have dirty wet linen to please place them I a provided laundry basket. This is to prevent moisture damage. We ask them to just leave everything else and we'll take care of it. But we do ask folks if they have time if they could start the dishwasher before leaving. Some folks don't clean their dishes and NO consequence. Our cleaning fee is $65. The actual cost to clean the units. If you are going to ask for guests to do the cleaning crews job then reduce the rate or don't ask.
Either/or is fine. Both is the issue. What am I paying $125 for if I'm doing the chores? What am I doing the chores for if I'm paying $125? Also, lol no at the cleaners not wanting to just sit there while multiple loads of laundry run. The person PAYING the cleaners doesn't want them sitting there while the loads are running. Very different.
We got our cleaning fee back after the home owners inspected after we left. We were not charged a cleaning fee. They asked us to wash and fold all linens putting the clean linen folded on the end of the bed so the cleaner knew it had been washed. Run dishes and put away and sweep. We didn't mind doing that in order that we got our cleaning deposit back. All cleaning supplies were provided. I would never leave dirty dishes but I would not change beds etc if I wasn't getting my money back.
Wahhhhh, she checked in knowing the rules, cry’s about it later. Typical.
i find it weird, in that there is a cleaning fee to begin with. If AirBnB is supposed to compete with hotels, for your money, why are they even allowing this fee? Not to mention, starting to do laundry, cleaning plates, etc.. Is tip expected?
Waaaaaah, person booked it knowing what they were getting into. Cries anyway.
I am an airbnb host for only a little while and has been learning the trade as I go along. Previously I would probably also be unhappy about this big cleaning fee, but seeing and experiencing it from the other side allows me to have a it different perspective. I asked a very small cleaning fee and asked guests to do a few chores like removing the bedding and putting it in the bath, where to put the trash, not to leave food in the fridge and to just pack the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and switch it on. To me this is just tyding up and not cleaning. The fee for hiring profesional cleaners and using laundry services is almost a full nights fee for me. Even if guests tidy up, there is still a lot of cleaning that needs to happen. I have grown up that it is just respectful to leave a place tidy, even if I know that someone will be coming to clean it. I have recently removed the cleaning fee, just so that I won't feel guilty about asking guests to do these things before leaving.
I think AirBnB should make the property owners include the cleaning fees in the room rate. The separate cleaning charge is more appropriate for weekly rentals (like VRBO) than places renting for a night or two. If the guest makes a total mess of the place, a cleaning surcharge would be appropriate. Loading the dishwasher and throwing towels in the washer seems reasonable.
Have to say, long before Airbnb, we have stayed in villas in the Orlando area, on occasion 6 bedroom villas with a pool, games room and bbq grill provided for our comfort. It always worked out much cheaper than hotel rooms with 3 couples and their relevant kids, plenty of room and if we didn’t want too go out, we cooked there and able too have a drink and not worry about a designated driver missing out on the fun, also plenty of things to keep the kids amused. There was always the request too strip the beds and put a load of washing in, don’t remember the dish washer being mentioned, but we always put the trash out. I think check in would have to be later if a load of washing wasn’t completed for when the cleaner got there, normal checkout is 12:00 & Check in at 3:00 doesn’t leave a lot of time for a thorough cleaning with the larger homes. I wouldn’t be opposed too doing the load of laundry for the next guest’s too start their stay at 3:00.
1 load of laundry and dishes shouldn't take more than 3 hours to cycle through and be put away, with plenty of time to clean bathrooms, surfaces and vacuum. So if these places are booked less than 3 hours apart, are they really paying the cleaning lady more than $20/hr? I have worked housekeeping before at a hotel and we worked very quickly. And for peanuts. Guests who left huge messes did happen occasionally, but luckily it was not the norm. And these services were provided daily to guests and included in the nightly cost of the resort. Also, I have to say that it IS much nicer when these rentals bake the fees into their nightly charge. Nothing more annoying than thinking you are paying $200/ night for a rental place and then, when you go to checkout you realize that the weekend is going to cost $800 by the time all of the hidden fees are added on. Looks like airb'n'b's days of success are numbered.
The cleaners are getting the $125. They are so fast that they are in and out in less than 2 hours? So they are making $60+ an hour. If they had to stay an extra hour to wait for cycles that they loaded themselves and it knocks them down to $40 an hour that is still a really good pay day.
This wreaks of privilege. If she doesn’t like it she should stay in a hotel.
I'm not ok with some random previous guest doing the laundry of linens I will be sleeping or bathing with/on 🤮 shouldn't the owners be making absolutely certain these items have been clean and hopefully sanitized?!
As an airbnb host I actually pay the cleaners more than what I charge guests. Also does this person realize that an airbnb host IS making money, yes, but STILL has all of the expenses associated with that property? Thirdly for my market the price per night is comparable to a hotel room and it's a WHOLE home. A private residence that a guest has the entire run of. I don't ask anything extra of my guests but many have taken five minutes to start the dishwasher and a load of laundry. If this person wants that feeling of entitlement she accuses the hosts of having, by not even being able to pick up after herself, then by all means support the Hilton...we all know they need the money.
It's all ridiculous! Cleaning between guests is part of the deal- why pay extra for it? The costs of running an ARB include providing a clean space for all guests. Hotels have done it for decades! I don't like Air B&B's at all! It's driven up the costs of rentals by creating a shortage of places to least long term. It's put a commercial enterprise in a residential area. Because owners make so much money, the overnight guests have a huge impact on the neighborhood environment & are rarely brought to heel as a result of their actions - noise & trash. I won't use an ARB & encourage others to avoid them as well.
Forget about it. My time is precious specially on vacation. I have rented a cabin and hotels a lot, when I leave I make sure there is no garbage, I cleaned after myself. However, leaving any electrical appliance on without my supervision is NO. Especially, when somebody else has a hold of my credit card. You can if you to I understand, but if it happens to you, is your decision alone, it was not mine.
I don't see the problem. For us with big families, it is still cheaper than paying for 2 hotel rooms that have bad ac and seems to be covered in pubic hair... I am good with airbnbs
The things they're asking for are really minor and allow a much faster turnaround time, meaning earlier check-in and later check-out times. Seems fair to me. I'm willing to clean up after myself, seems others feel differently.
I'm an Airbnb host. I just want to point out the flip side of this conversation. Guests regularly mark and dent walls, break furniture, leave sticky spills all over floors and walls, and make all kinds of 'adjustments' to TV's, stereo equipment and other electronics. Unless it's a very major problem, I let it slide.
Airbnb used to be affordable until entitled guests left them completely trashed causing the need for these cleaning fees. Trashing someone's rental property causes the owner to raise their rates so they can recoup those costs.
The title is very confusing. The tenant calls out the host. The title makes it seem like the host is calling out the tenant.
%50 of the price added for cleaning fees is insane and I'm pretty sure they pay the made the minimum wage. They don't want to pay more hours by asking the guest to put the laundry on, so if you don't put it you give more hour to the maid and more money
It's not 50% of the price unless you're staying a single night. You're paying the cleaning fee once, not per night. And you're welcome to stay in a hotel instead where the cleaning fee is built into the nightly rate. Cleaners don't have 3 hours to wait around for laundry -- they have to turn the place over and move on to their next cleaning!
Load More Replies...I have a cleaning person come into my house every other week. She does not wash my dishes or do my laundry. The cleaning fee would be much higher for these added charges.
There is a significant difference between a vacation rental cleaning and a residential cleaning.
Load More Replies...Honestly if you don't pick up behind yourself some the cleaning fees would be $250-300. The "cleaning fee" is to hire a professional company to sanitize and clean surfaces and beds. That is it. It's not to sweep up chips you dropped all over the floor, it's not to take the trash out to the curb, not to make sure you don't leave random weird things all over. So if you want to be a lazy, useless slob with no accountability for your dirt and destruction then just go to a hotel. They have a huge cleaning staff and will also have your deposit in case of destruction of their property. AirbNb is someone's home a singular individual they don't have cleaning staff on site. If you like having that type of unique experience that is not cookie cutter like a hotel and has those amenities you can only find in a home instead of a hotel then it comes with the responsibility of making sure the property comes back in decent condition.
If you don't like it, don't pay for it. It's really simple. "Can you believe Ferrari wants me to pay them over $100,000 for a car?!?!?! I can get a used Camry for way less!!!"
Don’t stay at an Airbnb if you don’t like what comes with it. It’s different from a hotel because you are getting a full home, which for quick turnaround may require more. Or, book an Airbnb without the requirements. But complaining about someone’s house rules is ridiculous. It’s their business and if you don’t like the rules, don’t stay.
It's ridiculous especially because she didn't even book it, she's complaining about the listing itself!
Load More Replies...Everyone is for a living wage until they realize that their AirBnB cleaners get that wage, too and that those little things they've been asked to do help reduce the cleaning fee. $125 to clean a house (ours is a 2,000 sf house in rural LA) is a bargain for just sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and restocking.
I have owned an AirBnB. The cleaning fee is usually what it costs to have a cleaning service come in and sweep, dust, mop, and restock. If you want the cleaning service to do those other things (laundry, dishes, et cetera), it usually costs $50/hour. If this lady wants to pay a $175 or $225 cleaning fee, she can drop the minor things she's been asked to do and we'll gladly charge her for them.
Not sure why you're getting down-voted when you're correct.
Load More Replies...For those who think the cleaning fee covers everything, think again! For me, my cleaner charges 155+ per clean, but my guests pay 145. We need the place turned around in 5 hours or less, so the cleaner does not have time to wait for an extra load of laundry, etc. That's why we ask our guests to start the towels. We also ask them to start the dishwasher, again so the cleaner doesn't have to wait around. We have the guests strip the sheets from the beds they used -- this is also a good indicator to the cleaner which beds were NOT used. And finally, I don't think it's too much to ask someone to clean up their own trash! If you're looking for a hotel experience, then book a hotel. If you want a unique stay with more space than a hotel room, then book a short term rental. The guest in this story just doesn't understand how it works.
I think a lot of guests are very slovenly, dirty, untidy and this is why Air BNB has developed its parameters. Motel's who pay cleaners often leave their rooms in an unacceptable dirty state. You only get a good standard with 5 star. Unfortunately a high percentage of people choose to live like pigs and carry their low standards with them. Air BNB providers got sick of the filth and mess left by tenants.
There is a reporting process on Air BnB. It the customer is a pig, it should be reported or they should be blocked from using Air BnB. The cost shouldn't be passed unto other customers.
Load More Replies...Then don't charge over $100 for someone else to do it
Load More Replies...It's not my job to do those things especially if you are charging me to do them. Pay the cleaning crew more. Get over yourself
Load More Replies...I think the take away point here is there is a cleaning fee...
